We are thoroughly enjoying our 2 weeks here at Occidental Cozumel. We upgraded from First Club to Royal and it has been fantastic! Thanks to Kinga, the First Club manager & Cristal, the Royal level manager, We were 2 of 6 guests for a “Chef’s table” dinner at the Playa Restaurant at sunset Thursday evening. The assistant food & beverage manager- Cesar Vega created an excellent passion fruit & hibiscus welcome cocktail & then paired each course with a perfectly matched wine. The grilled tuna appetizer melted in your mouth. The cream spinach soup was smooth & decadent. The main course was filet which was plated SO beautifully, I didn’t want to cut it. But I’m so glad I did because it was also divine. Dessert was also a beautiful culinary creation. Thank you to everyone involved in this fantastic experience. And to David Tovar, GM, I hope you will continue these experiences for other guests in the future. I certainly hope I can do it again. All 6 of us that attended agreed that this was certainly an over & above perk that made us feel valued by Occidental. I’m adding a few pictures that I took but I apologize for my poor camera skills. …
Our most recent trip was in November as the hotel was just getting reopened from the Covid 19 shutdowns and recent hurricane. The hotel had covid safety measures in place. Unfortunately not all amenities were up and running during our stay but staff were working on it (Adult pool and Royal Jacuzzi was not open). The very best part of this trip (besides being able to get away and vacation during the pandemic) was our dinners at La Carreta. Staff were very accommodating to our group - going above and beyond to meet our requests and making us feel welcome. A very special shout out to Rogelio Caamel! He was so very gracious and his skills were spectacular for presenting flambe. Master of the fire show!
Royal Level worth it. Service is outstanding. Rosalia at La Caretta, upon hearing I was vegan, surprised me with a new creation every meal, all delicious. Alejandro and Tomas couldn't do enough to meet any request, including having a lunch made for me to take with me on an day I was diving all day. Cristal at the Royal reception saved me a wasted afternoon of having to cab into town to get a prescription by simply making a call and having the item delivered to the hotel..saving me both time and money. And Luis from the beach restaurant also made a point of meeting my dietary requests even though my choices weren't at the buffet. If you want something not on the menu or the buffet, just ask! They're happy to accommodate! Our room was huge; having the suite was worth it when there for 2 weeks. There were some electrical outlets that didn't work, one light in the bathroom didn't function, and the lamps need replacing, but other than that, it was good. The main buffet was pretty lame, limited choices and not very tasty. I believe it may have been reduced due to COVID and the hotel's reduced capacity. But the other 2 specialty restaurants (Mexican and Mediterranean) had excellent food and wonderful staff. Regarding the beach, there is some significant erosion due to the storms. Quite a step down from the beach to the ocean. As for COVID care, the staff were all masked, hand sanitizers at every doorway as well as "walk through the disinfectant" mats. Only saw one situation where guests didn't wear masks at the buffet.…
I have to say we wanted to get away from all this Covid Crap, This hotel went above and beyond to make you fell Safe. People safety, food safety, everything safe. They served you in the Buffet lines so people stayed safe, They check temps before you entered. We have been to many of the All Inclusive resorts (at least once a year) this by far was the best food of all. The Beach is awesome and relaxing.
Good things first: * Beautiful Beach * Large Rooms - Cleaned very well * Well Maintained Grounds * On-site Dive shop run well Things to work on: * Food variety is very limited. * Food generally not hot * Not enough bartenders - often have to stand in line. * Noise carries in the rooms - not for light sleepers. We did not experience any real advantage to the Royal Level - so unless the price difference is VERY minimal- save the $$ Will try a new place next time. Would not recommend.
