Travelers' Choice
Only the Caribbean’s most famous reef system could match the beauty and splendor of the Occidental Grand Cozumel, which is exactly why the two exist side-by-side. Located on Cozumel’s gorgeous San Francisco beach, just above the bottomless blue paradise of the Palancar Reef system, you’ll find an authentic-style state that delivers all the luxuries of a private oceanside hacienda. Gourmet dining, bright and airy rooms, nightly music and entertainment, daily sports and beach activities and an on-site spa and salon make the Occidental grand Cozumel the jewel of any Caribbean experience.

I love Cozumel and have traveled there at least five times. This is the worst hotel I have stayed. The rooms are one room. It had one bed, one chair, a small chair and a dresser. No place to really sit unless it was your bed. The boards on my deck or entrance had nails sticking up. Holes in the deck. The bathroom had a smell. We were only allowed two reservations to the gourmet restaurants. Even after I mentioned that is not on their website. The last couple days it could not have been from being crowded. The main restaurant never opened on time and had the same food each day. The food was not that good. The only restaurant I recommend is the Steak house. Drinks were rarely what you ordered. Everyone put towels on the pool chairs and then left for the day on dive trips so there were rarely chairs available The beach sucks! There is always a boat there so it is hard to swim from the dock. The workers were so hard working they had to wear masks in the heat. They were kind and always helped when they could. The gym is very small but the gym staff was very kind. The grounds need attention and most of the rooms need updates. The beds were terrible and the pillows need sent out to sea. The front desk was not the easiest to work with. Not the typical trip to Cozumel. Please pick a different hotel. If you are an Iberostar member you do get better service. I paid more for my trip than the members paid.

Hotel's Favorite
This was our first vacation at an all-inclusive resort in several years. We're not big fans of the all-inclusive concept, but it does make for a relaxing vacation with much less running around in rental cars, taxis etc. since everything you need to enjoy a fun vacation is within the grounds of the resort. The Occidental has 4 or 5 on-site restaurants serving different types of cuisine - Mexican, Italian, steaks, buffet etc. The food is standard all-inclusive fare - not great, not bad, just good and convenient. But the servers in all of these places were top-notch - very nice and eager to help us have a good experience. Our room was nice, clean and comfortable. Everything worked just fine. The front desk and housekeeping staff were pleasant and kind. The grounds are very pretty, with the jungle vegetation well-preserved rather than clear cut as at many of the other resorts of this type. The beach was nice, fun for swimming and snorkeling with a lifeguard on duty. The pools were clean and well-maintained - great for relaxing with a book or participating in any of several organized activities that went on every day. The management and staff here clearly take the threat of the current pandemic very seriously. We never saw an unmasked staff member the entire week and we observed that they were doing a very good job of sanitizing the rooms, restaurants and common areas. However, we were there for the scuba diving. Pro Dive International is the on-site operator at the Occidental and they did an excellent job in all respects. The dive masters were top-notch. The dive briefings were clear and complete and the DMs were very attentive to the safety of their divers at all times. It had been some time since we had been diving, so we did a pool checkout the first day with DM Chris - he did an excellent job, is very knowledgeable and a fine communicator, making sure we still had the skills we need for the kind of diving you'll find in Cozumel which is purely drift dives. All of the DMs we dove with were excellent, but we thought Chris and Agata were particularly outstanding. If you're going to Cozumel for scuba diving, I strongly recommend this resort and its dive operation. Another reason is the location. It's near the southern end of the island, which is where all the best diving is to be found. If you stay much north of this place, you'll be in for some long boat rides. 5 big stars for a great experience.

The grounds and rooms were very nice. The employees work very hard to provide excellent and friendly service. The quality and availability of food and drinks was the area that could have been better. To be fair I think many all-inclusive are in an adjustment period adapting to covid safety protocols. Shout-outs to a couple of employees who went above and beyond: Simon at concierge was awesome! He was our go-to guy for all excursions and fun activities in Cozumel. Thanks Simon! And Rosalia in the kitchen at the beach buffet. We brought our fresh catch of the day from the fishing excursion Simon arranged. Her grilled mahi-mahi, tuna and Mexican risotto was the best meal of our trip!

Mayorico Gonzolez made our stay extra nice. He even knew our favorite dessert and brought it to another restaurant. The pool was fun and the diving was great - fun to leave right from the dock out in front. And there was a sailboat to use!

That’s right! I’m writing this review currently with Diarrhea. I thought it was a one off thing the first night until I woke up and discovered 5 of the 8 of us on our trip all had starting the same night. I should have listened to the reviews on how bad the food was but lesson learned. I am finally home and missing work dealing with this stomach issue. Additionally my wife and I were covered in bug bites but barely noticed any bugs biting us during the day. I was concerned about bed bugs but didn’t see any signs. My best guess is little bugs barely detectable that bite during the day. The rest of the trip went good. The limited dinner reservations where very annoying and not as originally advertised by Barcelo however Brandon and Hector worked well to resolve the issue for us. (Although I wish I would have just ate the fruit in the buffet the entire trip.) The entertainment staff did great and I enjoyed playing volleyball with the both of them. I was also impressed by the DJ at the pool he played dance mix versions of top 40 songs that’s attention to detail. I wish the food lived up to the music. Another shout out to the concierge Simon for being a great support with phenomenal recommendations on activities and things to do in Cozumel. Simon went over and above he was probably our favorite part of Cozumel. Thank you Simon! Concerning the food I’m aware that many companies are trying to bounce back after Covid. I’ve stayed in other Barcelo resorts and I don’t think this represents the overall quality of the company. However I’d recommend Barcelo invest in making sure this resort is at the level my wife, friends, family and l have come to expect from Barcelo. To those reading this I reccomend the Barcelo in Riveria Maya and if there 5 resorts would not disappoint. I won’t be returning to Occidental Cozumel.
