The resort is on a beautiful location. Staff was very friendly. Food was good as far as buffet food goes. Never got boring. We didnt try try the fancy restaurant as you had to dress up for that. Swimming pool was ok. The swim up pool bar sucked. Was kind of smelly. Now for the room. We stayed on the older side of the resort. Room was adequate but the bathroom was horrible. Hadnt been updated in a long time if ever. The resort as a whole is very dated, in desperate need of an upgrade. I dont know what the rooms looked like on the "newer side" but on the older side it wasnt great. Im sure in its prime it was a beautiful resort. But for 700 dollars for food and drink for a family of 4 for 3 days, cant expect to much. Would I stay here again??? Probably not!

Hotel's Favorite
We've been here almost every December for about 10 years, for 7-12 days each year. Workers are very friendly. Food is great and an exceptional value, especially if you sign up for the more formal Veranda restaurant each day (free). Drinks are fine but we are just casual drinkers. I teach snorkeling in Mexico: we have snorkeled and SCUBA-ed all around Cozumel and our favorite snorkeling is the drift dive from S of El Coz back to the resort. We bring a Snorkel BC and clip our shoes to it for the swim back. If you are looking for a wild party atmosphere, look elsewhere. But if you want a friendly relaxing atmosphere that is an exceptional value, El Cozumeleno is a wonderful deal.

In the last year I have been to this resort 3x. We have been coming to Cozumel for over 25 years and really love the people and the place. The El Cozumeleno is really a mixed bag but one thing I can say is most of the staff are exceptional & the reason we keep coming back. If you can get this place for $700 - $800 /pp/wk all in, might be worth it. Plus you don't feel bad about taking a taxi to town for some amazing meals & experiences. We were here for New Year's Eve once and it was great! Management and the tour companies should NOT book families with small children on the upper floor rooms on the "old" side. There are only 2 cables strung approximately 16" apart on the balcony. A child could easily fall through. This was the 1st time I brought my grandchildren and luckily my daughter in law noticed the lack of railings on our 5th floor room. The patio door would not lock so we were very concerned about the children's safety. The hotel staff refused to move us that night. It was after 1am when we finally got in to our room and got the kids to bed. The next day we complained to the Manager, the best he offered us was a 2nd floor room, which also had no railings. We refused, requested a refund and began looking for alternate accommodations for the family. He then found us a room on the ground floor. During our short stay on the 5th floor, we were trapped in the tiny elevator 4x, once between floors. Thankfully twice there was staff on it with us. The things we love about the hotel is the staff (most), it's small, quiet, clean, safe, close to the beach & has a dive shop on site. The things we don't love are, it is very dated, the beds are either like boards or broken down and saggy, the check in and check out is a nightmare and the buffet is terrible, unless you have something made fresh (a few in our group actually got sick) . The dining room is much better but you have to line up every day at 7am to make reservations. When we arrived late, there was no where to get the kids a snack, get sheets for the one bed or any services. Everything closes early including house keeping, the buffet and the 1 bar. There is no snack bar and room service never answered their extension the entire week. At the airport it took forever to leave. Our family filled one shuttle but we had to wait & wait. Luckily the hotel is only a short drive from the airport. The hotel is 5km + from town, so a long walk with little kids so we usually took a taxi. While our Air Transat reservation indicated we had to pay a small resort fee in CAD, the hotel charged us 3x the amount in USF. It added about $100 USF to the cost of the trip. After about 2 hours of dealing with the manager, we couldn't connect with the Air Transat Rep, I finally just paid the fee to get checked out. It appeared if you paid the manager, the service level at the front desk improved. The playroom was dated, had a few hazards but was spotless. The rec staff was great!! I was so excited to bring my family to this place I love, but after this last trip, I was so disappointed, I'm not sure we will go back. I do want to give a huge shout out to Gabriel, Karen, Roger, Manny, Angelina and the many others who really make this place special. They were so helpful with the little kids and really looked after my family. THANK YOU!

Certainly a beautiful property with all the amenities you'd expect from a Resort Hotel but a few things it just really bothered me. First off, the hotel uses a laundry service that uses unreasonable amounts of perfumed laundry detergent and fabric softener good I couldn't even stay in the room 3 minutes without my skin starting to crawl. I had all the blankets and sheath removed and slept all and comforters. I did this because I know comforters are really washed but two or three times a year. So yeah, yuck. But it was better than wasting thousands of dollars on non-refundable Hotel packages The food wasn't bad but it what really bothered me was have they lied about what kind of fish they were using. One waiter would say that it was sea bass, one waiter would say that it was grouper and so on. When the truth of the matter is it was all that farm-raised Vietnamese swai basa junk. You know, the stuff that tastes like eggs scrambled in mud. Yeah it was attractive on the plate but, that ain't everything. The Mexican Fair wasn't particularly good considering what usually available. Most popular buffet was the American breakfast buffet paid it had your typical American Bread's fruits oh, cold pancakes and waffles. For the pricey places are charging the food on to be spectacular or at least decent. There were lots of water sports available front of the hotel. I chose snorkeling which wasn't good at all but had the token overabundance of surgeonfish and occasional barracuda. Completely uninteresting Sandy Bottom. If I would go back to this area I would probably stay at Playa Del Carmen. At least it has more of an authentic local feel and better choices in restaurants. The beach is far prettier as well albeit rougher surf not appropriate for snorkeling

Been coming to this hotel for 15 years. Love the snorkling! Needs some upgrading but a great place to relax and enjoy vacation. Price is very reasonable. Close to downtown and airport. Staff is so friendly and helpful! From manager Grabiel to bellhop Fransisco! When you leave you will leave with friends!
