Hotel's Favorite
Absolutely fantastic all inclusive adults only hotel.
My partner and I spent 12 days here in May 2023 and can't rate it highly enough. We were told the rainy season was about to start but we only had one night when there was any rain, and there was plenty within the hotel to keep you busy when it did rain.
General hotel
The hotel was absolutely spotless, it was constantly being cleaned and was well maintained. The staff are fantastic, really attentive and you can tell they take pride in what they do. The Lobby is beautiful, and all the different areas are superb. We were all inclusive and I was amazed at what was included as there's usually hidden extra charges - everything I mention below was included.
Food/ drinks
There are 5 restaurants to choose from, and they're all brilliant. You don't need to reserve at the a la cart restaurants, and if it's busy you get a buzzer and can wait in the art deco bar in the lobby. In order of my preference I'd recommend 1) the Japanese restaurant - amazing sushi and ramen, 2) the buffet - so much choice and always delicious 3) the Italian - the dinner menu was great and you can also get lunch in here too 4) the fusion restaurant - some interesting combos and finally 5) the steak restaurant - surf and turf option but there's better places to eat in my opinion.
There's also a 25 hour snack bar which always had fresh guac and salsa for nachos, as well as quesadillas, burrito, hot dogs and pizza. There were fridges of bottled water, optics and a coffee machine in there too. There was only one day we were there that they seemed to run out of water in the snack bar but the rest of the time it was always being restocked with fresh food and water.
Coffee bar
There's a hot drink and cake bar in the lobby and which was open until late. You can get various hot and hold drinks as well as a lovely selection of cakes and ice cream. I had earl grey tea and my partner had the lattes - always great!
Bars
There were several bars to choose from, but generally you'd get table (sun lounger) service, even on the beach! There were premium drinks like Bacardi and lovely cocktails. I highly recommend margarita on the rocks. The staff were lovely and really looked after you, anticipating when you needed a top up.
I can't fault the service we received, always friendly and welcoming in the restaurants and the bars. They even helped the folks who couldn't handle their drinks by piling them into wheelchairs and taking them back to their rooms (something I've never seen before, and found quite shocking). Thankfully that wasn't a regular occurrence that I saw, and not the sort of behaviour I'd expect from people choosing to stay in this lovely hotel.
Pools
There were three pools which were all well maintained. The first pool which you come across as you exit the lobby is stunning, particularly at night when it's lit up and you look across it to the ocean. This one got the sun in the morning/ early afternoon and the sun loungers always seemed to be reserved.
The quiet pool to the left and behind the theatre was great, quite small but plenty of cabanas and loungers to choose from, with beautiful views out to the sea.
The party pool to the right, which had music and the animation team. It isn't my cup of tea but looked like a lot of fun if you were up for getting involved, or joining the foam party. There were two bars at that pool, one of them a swimup. The music, although loud, wasn't disruptive and I quite enjoyed sitting a little further away but getting to hear the tunes.
Beach access
There's also a private stretch of beach with plenty of loungers and parasols, we never struggled to find a lounger. The sea is gorgeous and the staff again work hard to keep it clean and make sure your drink is topped up. There's life guards if you're swimming and you're still close enough to the hotel if you need to nip in for anything.
You're given cards when you check in which you can exchange for pool towels, and I'd recommend taking a thermos cup/ chili bottle to keep your drinks cold!
Rooms
The room we had (555) was exactly as pictured on trip advisor. We had a great view out the side of th hotel so we could see the ocean and the bay, and got the most stunning sunsets. I'd recommend that floor and I think it was rooms 550-560 that had that view. The rooms were kept immaculate, cleaned daily and you got to choose of they changed the sheets/ towels. There were a couple of days when the bottled water wasn't replenished but as I mentioned the snack bar always had plenty. The fridge always had pepsi, pepsi light, 7up and tonic water and the optics were refilled with Jose cuervo, Smirnoff, Bacardi and Gordon's gin! Perfect for chilling with a drink on the balcony as the sun set before dinner. Housekeeping left us cute towel arrangements on the bed which I loved, a really nice touch.
Entertainment
There was always something happening, from morning yoga stretching to volleyball, to quizzes to live music at night. We'd heard everything stopped quite early but didn't find that to be the case. Things were going on until about 11pm and then you could head to the sister hotel next door to use their nightclub if you wanted to keep going!
Tips
I found a good article on Skyscanner about how much to tip in Cancun (if this isn't something you're used to). We took pesos with us and tipped the bar and wait staff regularly. Usually 20 or 50 pesos depending on whether it was sun lounger service or going up to the bar ourselves. At dinner it was usually 50. It definitely wasn't expected as no one hung about waiting for a tip, but it felt like the right thing to do seen as we were so well taken care of. We tipped housekeeping 50 a day again as they always left our room looking lovely.

This will be a lengthy review; for anyone looking for a quick recommendation: this resort was the BEST! For those craving more details: read on!
We were met at check in with a glass of champagne. I don’t really drink champagne, so the waitress went back and brought me a jack and coke. We were vacationing with another couple, the gentleman at check in heard us talking about how we hoped our rooms were close, so he put us side by side (even though I’m not sure we initially were).
The maid service for the room was excellent, and our fridge initially had several drinks we didn’t care for, but leaving an empty with $5 under it changed all that, and the next day the fridge was all drinks we would drink!
The food was great! There were many options: for breakfast, there is an omelet bar, countless types of eggs available, and the breakfast buffet is large! For lunch: another great variety! On Wednesdays and Saturdays, the resort does bbq on the beach! For supper: a sushi restaurant, a Mexican restaurant, a steakhouse, the buffet, and Krystal (we didn’t try this one). Honestly, this was my first resort, so I can’t compare the food to other resorts, but compared to home, the food was fantastic!
The entertainment staff was awesome! there were things to do on the resort each night, from bingo and blackjack to karaoke! Some nights there were shows, and live music. They were very engaging, and we participated in almost every event! Adrian, Janela, and Daniella were all especially great! The bartenders were also great! There is a bar in the theater area (one of many) and these guys never let a drink go empty (we tipped generously). Thank you Santi, Ernesto, and Ulises!
The area around the resort was very safe, we walked around several days. Pro tip: visit Chedraui (a three story grocery store two blocks down from the resort) day one for souvenirs, alcohol, and toiletries at half the price of anywhere else!
We had an absolute blast in Cancun, and Riu Palace las Americas was the main reason why!! My wife and I highly recommend!!

I’m still reminiscing about the fresh scent of clean air and powder that I felt as soon as I walked into the doors at the Riu Palace. I was so happy with my stay and will make this my regular place when I visit Cancun. So here are all the pros: 1. This hotel is very organized going through all of the steps to get your covid test scheduled before going back to the USA. They take away all the added stress and even print your results after they are emailed. 2. This resort goes above and beyond to follow covid guidelines. You have to get your temperature check enter the restaurants, they are constantly making you use sanitizer to enter areas and masks are worn in common areas. I really felt safe. 3. The resort constantly had entertainment and activities all through the day and that made it fun 4. Every staff member was extremely friendly professional and always greeted me with a smile 5. The facilities were impeccable and always common areas were being wiped down and Disinfected 6. The location was perfect and walking distance to the club night strip and shopping was right across the street. Now for the cons: my air conditioner in my room was not the coldest and for some reason I couldn’t control the temperature and it still didn’t work even after I had maintenance come and look at it. I could get by but this would have made me miserable in the summer heat. 2. The beds were hard and the pillows were completely flat and lumpy I had to put like 5 on top of each other to get comfortable. 3. Food in restaurants was subpar. The buffet is the best shot for the freshest and best tasting food. Other than these small cons I would still give this resort 5 stars and come back every time. You will not be dissappointed with Riu Palace.

Upon arrival your temperature is taken, you’re given hand sanitizer and you must wear a mask at all times in the hotel, when you enter a restaurant a mask must be worn too. I’m ok with wearing a mask, however, I notice the last few days MANY guests NOT wearing masks in the hotel lobby and the security isn’t enforcing it!
We saw three people walk right by security not wearing a mask, others sitting in the lobby chatting no mask. The hotel needs to enforce mask wearing otherwise they will see what’s going on in the USA spreading to here! Our room smelled musty similar to the other reviews, the television channels were not clear, very fuzzy. The room floor is filthy and needs to be mopped. I had on white socks and they are black now. There needs to be a blanket on the bed. We saw one in the closet but we didn’t trust it to be clean since it was packed away. The bathrobes didn’t smell fresh and clean. The bed was comfortable, the shower pressure is good. The room overall serves the purpose. The front reception desk is very stern and not overly helpful. The cocktail servers on the beach and restaurants are all very nice and they truly work hard to please the guests. William and Juan work on the beach serving drinks and they are great! I don’t remember all the names of the guys for lunch/dinner in the restaurants but everyone was great! The lobster though is NOT fresh in the Italian restaurant. The lobster smelled so fishy it wasn’t edible! You could smell it through the mask! No clue why they still served this! And the shrimp in the buffet restaurant is the same... fishy! I would conclude they are NOT rinsing the seafood off with water before they cook it! So the water the seafood is packaged in is not being rinsed off. There are waits for dinner usually an hour or more. The hotel does not take reservations, so it’s first come first serve. I would say this is a solid 3 star hotel. Not great, but not bad. If you like holiday inn, comfort inn the RIU is along those lines. If you like The Four Seasons, Ritz, One & Only
this hotel will fall short. However, for a affordable beach vacation this works. Notes: you don’t have to wear a mask on the beach, around the pool, or while eating of course.

Response from Riu Hotels and Resorts, Dueño at Hotel Riu Palace Las Americas
Responded Jul 8, 2020
Dear guest, Thank you so much for taking the time to let us know about your recent stay with us. We want all of our visitors to have an unforgettable time here at our hotel, and as you can imagine, it makes us sad to read that we could not fulfil your expectations in all areas. While we are glad to read that you highlight our strict antic covid–19 protocols, it is very disappointing to learn that although our staff go above and beyond to make sure that our guests follow our new rules, not everyone does so. Please accept our apology if this made your stay less enjoyable. Your valuable feedback is imperative for us to improve where necessary and will be reviewed by our management team. We do hope we get a second chance to redeem your faith in us. Kind regards, Hotel Riu Palace Las Americas Online Reputation Manager

I’m an experienced traveler throughout Mexico, but this time was my first to an riu property. Also I should say I prefer a smaller resort, and this is of course not The fault of RIU.
Pros: Amazing staff, Beautiful beach, view from our room was a Seaview, and was gorgeous, the service on the beach and at the pool was excellent, except for the first day we were there. That day was particularly busy so I’m sure that had something to do with it. The elevators were quick.
Cons: being that we were at a top level “RIU property” I expected much more. I am no princess, but I was more then surprised at what they didn’t have. The only toiletries they offered were two small bars of soap which they only replaced one time during our eight day stay. There’s a weird little shampoo dispenser in the shower, and that was it. No lotion, conditioner, face wipes, or any other basic essential I have found at every other resort I’ve ever been at. After about five days I requested new robes and never got them. They didn’t replace them the next day when room service came through either. They have the thermostat set at a certain temperature and you can’t make it any cooler. Many times our room was very very hot. Due to Covid, they’ve taken out the coffee makers, alarm clocks, and liquor dispensers in the rooms, and there is no room service. So if you want coffee in the morning you have to drag yourself down to the coffee bar. Spoke with many other people staying other places in Cancun and they still offer room service, and didn’t remove things like coffee makers and alarm clocks. Entertainment Was disappointing at best. They did have some kind of show or event every night and we only enjoyed two of the shows the rest was not good. If you want to stay up past 10:30 you have to figure out how to entertain yourself.
The food was good everywhere we went, but I am no foodie so I’m probably not the best person to review that.
Overall, I will not be returning to this resort.

I spend at least a few months every year traveling for business and pleasure, and this is by far the worst hotel I've been to. I understand that companies need to cut costs during Covid however, the Riu Las Americas takes it to a new and uncomfortable level.
From the moment you arrive the front desk staff is not only rude, but sarcastic in a way that makes you feel that all they want from you is your money. Geoffrey at the front desk went as far as to tell me I didn't belong in Mexico because I couldn't speak the language. It was racist and insulting and made me feel horrible.
They have also cheapened the quality of the food and drinks top to bottom to compensate for the 50% occupancy which they try to make you feel bad about every chance they get.
The liquor bottles have been removed from all rooms and the mini fridges are understocked. They also removed the normal hotel phones and replaced them with phones that don't connect to room service or to the front desk.
Cancun is one of the most beautiful places in the world and is full of top notch five star accommodations. Please take advice from a seasoned world traveler and stay as far away from here as possible.

Just finished a wonderful vacation at the R.P.L.A.!
We were celebrating my birthday and my wife's recent retirement. Check in was quick and efficient. We received an upgrade to an ocean facing suite and received awesome customer service for our entire vacation.
Management exceeded our expectations with respect to our whole stay. Staff from house keeping to dining to bar service were excellent.
We really love the groomed and sheltered beach in front of this hotel. Beach is kept so clean. The beach was free of sea weed so it made for a more pleasant swimming experience. Pools were immaculate as was all of the property.
Our favorite restaurants were the steak house and the Italian restaurant for lunch. We went to Krystal's but the food that was served was forgettable. Although service at Krystal's was good the food, the service and the atmosphere was top notch at the Steak House restaurant. My wife and I loved the beach barbeque lunch and we were fortunate enough to get two barbeque lunches in during our stay. Food was excellent for both lunches.
The entertainment crew had excellent energy and made an effort to engage with everyone.
Thank you Riu Palace Las Americas for an unforgettable experience!

I just returned from my third stay at this resort. The staff are spectacular and the hotel is spotless! Before entering a restaurant, guests are required to put on a mask and sanitize hands. Masks must be worn when you go to the buffet. All staff always wear masks.
Vivianna at the Japanese restaurant deserves a shout out! The last time I was at the Palace las Americanas! I drank a little bit too much. Vivianna went out of her way to tend to me and make sure I was ok. On my most recent trip, Vivianna recognized me and went out of her way to welcome me back, ask how I was doing, ask how my holidays were, etc. it was like meeting an old friend!
Although I love lots of things about this resort, I will go back just to see Vivianna again! I always meet so many people here and feel very much at home. The front desk staff honors my room request to the best of their ability, so I know I’ll have a beautiful ocean view from my upper floor balcony.

Had an excellent vacation here. I'd like to actually give 4.5 stars, but that's not an option. The only reason I'd take half star off is because the rooms (or, at least the one I stayed in) really need to be updated and the food was just mediocre at best. The hospitality of the staff and the layout of the hotel, beach, pool area were all great. They don't have very many servers working the pool area, so if you are in a hurry to get a drink, the best bet would be to get it from the bar. Check-in and check out procedures were organized and went smoothly. Covid testing is scheduled upon arrival. If you are traveling with others but arriving separately, you will probably have different testing times. The others I traveled with had appointments in the morning and mine was at 4:00pm. I went with my friends at their time in the morning and they were accommodating in taking me early because we wanted to schedule an activity. Common areas were constantly being cleaned and there was several places to get hand sanitizer if you needed it. Masks were required inside the hotel.
I had an oceanfront room, which had a great view. The bed was comfortable, but could have used some more substantial bed linens. The room & bathroom were substantial in size. The only complaint I have about the bathroom is that my shower door would not close all the way and by the time I was done with my shower I would have a huge puddle of water outside the shower door. I tried rolling up some wash cloths and put them in the crack and it helped a little bit. The battery in the safe needed replacing during my stay. The maintenance people were very prompt in coming to the room.
The food in the restaurants is mediocre at best. One of my friends who has stayed at the RIU several times in the past said this was not the norm. Perhaps since Covid the food has changed. If I went back I'd probably skip the restaurants and just eat at the buffet. I didn't really find much on the restaurant menus appealing (except lamb on the last night), but could always find something I liked on the buffet.
I'd definitely stay at the RIU again because of the awesome hospitality of their workers (Pablo at the front desk was great), the common areas such as the pool were very nice, and the fact that it's an adult's only resort. The location is also great. It's outside of the typical "party zone" , so for me it's ideal but if you're looking for the party scene, you'll probably want to go further south.

I just returned from a 5 day solo stay and had an enjoyable experience overall. I wanted a trip that would allow me to relax and recharge and just enjoy the beautiful weather while also taking COVID safety seriously.
The positives: 1. The resort itself is lovely. There are 3 pools each with a different vibe so there is something for everyone. They also have great protected beach access which allows you to enjoy the gentle waves in the vibrant blue water. Their grounds inside and out were kept immaculately clean and the resort took COVID precautions with hand sanitizer everywhere, temp checks and constant sanitation. 2. The staff were all absolutely wonderful. I did not come across a single staff member that wasn't beyond friendly. The drinks staff by the pool and on the beach were attentive and made sure you had what you needed.
The not as positives: 1. The room I had was very spacious and had balcony access. The resort is not brand new but it did not feel like the rooms were seriously outdated. What was frustrating was that no matter what I did the room was always humid/damp. I am not sure why this was the case but it left all clothes/linens with mildewy smell. 2. The food was not great overall. I loved that there were many restaurant options but the quality was not great. I know it's hard to turn out meals for so many people but I was just hoping for better. I felt like the buffet restaurant was ultimately the best quality because of constant refreshing of items. I also wish there were better snack options mid day if you didn't want to leave the beach or pool mid day.
As a whole I had a lovely vacation that allowed me to relax and soak in the sun. As a solo traveler I felt very safe and I am already missing the calmness of the pool and beach.

Response from RIU Hotels and Resorts, Owner at Hotel Riu Palace Las Americas
Responded Apr 9, 2021
Dear MissaG286, Thank you very much for choosing Riu! We are happy to read that you overall had a lovely time at our hotel and that you especially enjoyed the swimming pools and the dedicated service of our staff members! We are sorry however that the food did not reach your taste this time as we know the importance of a great gastronomic experience in an all inclusive hotel. Also, please note, humidity is something very typical of a tropical climate, and our internal system is created to mitigate this, therefore it is a shame we failed to live up to your expectations. We would have liked to have been informed about all your inconveniences during your stay so we could have helped you to enjoy a pleasant holiday. We would be delighted if you would honor us with another opportunity to convince you of our RIU service and quality. Warm regards, Hotel Riu Palace Las Americas Online Reputation Manager
