Short and sweet. The place is not awful. I was just there for the past four days. It is not a hotel, and there is no food offered. The best way to describe this place is that it is an apartment (with a kitchen and utensils to make food.) I personally made no food there and just choose to eat out everyday. For those of you who do not have a car. It is a 15 minute walk to the nearest bus stop, which is really not that bad at all. It is a beautiful walk, through palm trees, and you can see the lagoon. There is only one staff member that speaks and understand English, and that staff member does not work everyday. I had to get by using google translate with the person at the "reception desk", (a window at the side of the main apartment complex). No harm no foul. There was a mutual understanding, and everything worked out really well. One complaint that my roommate had, was that there were ants crawling all around our apartment. Sometimes ever during the evening he found them on himself. Personally I had none on me, and I did not have this issue in my room, however, there is a small super market store about 5 minutes walk from the apartment complex, where we bought anti bug spray, and we solved the problem very quickly. This place does have room service, they basically provide new towels, soap, and shampoo. Other than that they don't do that much. As for the towels. Someone earlier on here wrote that they were second hand used towels. That's true, my towels had spots on them from who knows where. Most of my towels where white, probably because I tipped the room service 100 pesos a day, however, the first day we came, our towels had spots. Those were obviously used for the beach and the floor post shower. A lot of reviews on here were negative, and really scared me from coming here, but because I was on a budget, and booked through Hotwire, I had no choice. The reviews, are not all true. This place is not awful, for the price we paid, and the time we stayed, which was really only just for sleep. This is a good place, and you shouldn't have any fears staying here. Enjoy…
Las Gaviotas has so much potential but......I have to call it as I see it: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My wife and I have been to Mexican resorts about 15 times when we were both working. Now that we are retired we were thinking about spending 3 months in Cancun, to get away from our Canadian winter. Of course we new that living in Mexico and vacationing in Mexico are 2 different things. So we decided to try it for one month. We came across Las Gaviotas Hotel on Airbnd. We were there from Feb 1 to Mar 3,2017. During this period 1 canadian dollar was worth 15 pesos and 1 USD was worth about 20 pesos. There are about 35 apartments of which I can only comment on the 4 that I actually saw. The 1st apartment was very outdated and not very clean. The second one was on the 3rd or 4th floor and was not very convenient for retirees like us, since there are no elevators. The apartment we saw 3 weeks later for another family member was much better than the room that we eventually ended up with. Our apartment was very big but dated, with a kitchen, TV room, 2 bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms. The kitchen had 2 small pots, a frying pan, some kitchen utensils, and enough dishes for 6. The gas stove, fridge, coffee maker and microwave were all functional. We had to wash down the kitchen and shower. The window vertical blinds were dirty and some did not function properly. Room service was every 2 days (not every day like it says on Trip Advisor), but this was more than acceptable. The towels were very old and used, with rust spots and some were even delivered with holes in them. The King size bed mattress was very old, but we slept very well on it. There are air conditioners in both rooms and the TV room/kitchen, but we never used it. The property is pet friendly and for the most part the dogs were well behaved. However there were dogs barking from a property across the street till 2am. The pool is small but cleaned everyday. The pergoda is a great place to be away from the sun and look out to the golf course. There are beautiful trees which attracts a variety of birds and all their beautiful sounds. Though there was a facilty for self laundry, however most people went to a laundry service which was about 5 minutes away and very affordable (125 pesos for 5KG). About 7 minutes away was also a small sandwich place and a corner store. To get to Selecto a great grocery store, one could walk to the main boulevard, which is about a 15 minute walk and a short bus ride from there. The bus costs 10 pesos. If walking and taking the bus is not your thing, you can get there by Cab for about 120 pesos. The owner Gerardo and the people working there (Myriam, Delfino and Victor) were all pleasant to deal with.…
12/2/2016 (RPC). I wish I had read these reviews before deciding to rent. In addition to these reviews Las Gaviotas does not provide a coffee maker, microwave oven, fully equipped kitchen LOL, no security, no daily maid service as advertised and the list goes on and on. If you decide to stay here, hopefully you like barking dogs!
Avoid this place, there is plenty of proper budget hotels around Cancun area if you are looking for low prices. Staff not friendly at all. Very disorganized management. Avoid Annie and Johnny at reception useless customer service. The owner never faces the real problems. Rooms are so dirty. The towels are so old and they seem to be second hand from other hotels. Sheets and beds I rather not comment. There is not proper breakfast area. The breakfast was horrible. This place it's a shame as it puts mexican hospitality in risk. Don't ruin your holiday/vacation in this place. Honestly after coming to Cancun in the last 10 years there is plenty of choice and good brands around to pick from right by the beach. Shop around!
It's not because I'm picky, I stayed many hostel in Mexico at fraction of the price that were way better. I stayed there on June 23 2016. They were dirt everywhere in the room, dirty sheets and towels, mildew and mushrooms in the shower and the air climatiser was not working because they were too many dirt inside the unit. I don't recommend you that hotel at any price. It look way better on the pictures than in real. Maybe it was good in 1990, but it look like if they don't do maintenance since that time. The manager told me that I will get a credit of 200 pesos on my credit card for the problem with the air conditionner and they never gave me my money back. Any other hotel in Cancun will be better than that...
