This hotel could be nice except it has not been kept up with. The bathroom had a bad case of mold and our room needed an upgrade. The area was fairly noisy the night we stayed with someone screaming on the street out front and some loud traffic sounds. Maybe the back side of the hotel would have been quieter. The staff was very friendly and helpful but because we didn't get much sleep we decided to cut our time in Mexico City and head out to our next destination early.

Gran Hotel Texas is a basic, low.cost, centric hotel. It is situated near Monumento a la Revolución, in calle Ignacio Mariscal. It is important. Due to its location, Gran Hotel Texas is less noisy than other centric hotels. However, it is just a few blocks from Metro Revolucion, what makes it very accesible, too.

This hotel isn't charming or anything. But it's a safe, clean, inexpensive option near Metro Revolucion. I stayed there with a large group, half of whom were staying at La Casa de los Amigos across the street. In a similar situation, I would be willing to stay there again. (Otherwise I would prefer La Casa or some other hotel with more charm.) Cons: I was chilly in my room at night and there were no extra blankets in the whole hotel (!), so I slept in my winter coat I had brought from Philadelphia with me. The bathroom was pretty dark. Pros: Free wifi usually worked in my room. There was a safe in the room (key required $200 pesos returnable deposit). The staff was friendly and helpful. t I felt safe and it was clean. And it's not expensive. If you stay there, don't miss El Tigre's taco and sandwich stand on the corner. Good, inexpensive, delicious food there.

Convenient location between Revolucion Metro station and Plaza de la Republica on a quiet side street. An inexpensive alternative to the Casa de los Amigos, across the street. Clean rooms, private baths, comfortable bed, perhaps smaller than usual in Mexico. All-Spanish cable TV, Wifi in the lobby. Our room was in the back of the hotel, little city noise at night, especially considering it has three very busy streets within a block or two. Room with one double bed and private bath was about 300 pesos in July 2011. Did not take credit cards.

My spouse and I have stayed at the Gran Hotel Texas from the recommendation of the Casa de los Amigos, just across the street. It's a no-frills, clean business hotel, with quiet but friendly staff, and a cleaning staff that thoroughly cleans the place every day. We stayed in a double room, which was just the right size, and kept very clean (sometimes with strong-smelling chemicals, but ah well.) We had a safe in the room, which you could use in exchange for a 200 Pesos deposit on the key. This was very convenient. The staff didn't speak English, but were nice, if quiet. What the place doesn't have is atmosphere; it's just not a place to hang out. It's not dead in the center of the Centro, but it's close to Metro Revolucion, and within walking distance of the metrobus, and Alameda Park. There's a lot of street food and small restaurant options around. All in all, it was a good place to stay for a few days of alone time. When we needed atmosphere and people, we just hopped across the street to the Casa.
