This was definitely the most disappointing experience I have ever had at an IC, and I stay at their properties a fair amount. The good: the location is great, in Polanco, which is a lovely and safe neighbourhood with loads of great restaurants and close to various museums. The passable: the building looks very much like an Intourist hotel from the outside, very much a brutalist aesthetic. The not-so-good: we had one night booked through the IC Ambassador free-night offer, followed by 3 nights booked via a luxury travel agent. The agent asked them to link the bookings, which they didn’t do. When we went to check-in we had to query this and they managed to link the bookings. The benefits that we were entitled to via the agent’s IHG Luxury Collection programme didn’t come through on the booking at all, so we had an argument about getting breakfast included. When I forwarded them the confirmation email, they eventually agreed we could have breakfast. We got told we got upgraded to a club room. But at this hotel the club room doesn’t come with club lounge access. You could add that for $30pn (which I guess makes sense if you haven’t got breakfast), but still feels rather odd. Once we got to the room there was mildew and dry rot around the shower and toilet and the bathroom vanity unit was peeling – just like you’d expect in a 2* hotel, not an IC. We got changed into another room where the shower was broken and the bathroom tile skirting was coming off. I gave up asking for another room. The club rooms are identically small to standard rooms, except they have a Nespresso machine and electric blinds and are on higher floors. None of the other amenities that come with booking via the IHG Luxury Collection programme materialised, so I went to ask about the $100 F&B credit. Apparently at this hotel it isn’t a $100 F&B credit, but a bottle of wine and cheese. Room service called to ask if we wanted prosecco or house wine. At this point I blew up and the duty manager eventually came up. I’d asked to speak to him several times before, but the various reception staff kept refusing to get him. We had a frank chat about our poor experience and about how every member of his staff seemed intent on fobbing me off. We got a bottle of Argentinian sparkling wine and cheese as the $100 amenity in the end – although they kept calling it an Ambassador amenity, so not sure if they ever actually worked out the terms of our rate. The DM agreed to refund us a night in points – 35k of which they eventually credited to me after chasing by email. The DM made a big deal about how they were closed for a long time and are struggling for staff, but I think what annoyed me the most was not them saying “I don’t know”, but wanting to argue and prove me wrong at every turn without actually knowing what they’re talking about… Overall, way way more stress than one should experience at a 5* hotel paying $200+ per night and being their highest-tier customer…

Prior to my arrival I called the concierge to arrange transportation from the airport as our arrival time was midnight. The transportation was there to pick us up and drive us to the hotel. We arrived at the hotel at one in the morning. I asked for a wake up call at 5:30 AM. We didn’t sleep much due to a noise that I wasn’t sure what it was, but it was so late, and we were exhausted from a Long trip I figured I just deal with it. The next morning I ask for transportation to drop off my daughter at her camp. The driver did not know where I was going although I had already provided that information to the concierge, this was poor communication between the concierge and the transportation company. As I return to my room at 8:30 in the morning I was hoping to go back to sleep for a few hours. But the noise continued, so I called the front desk to ask what was that noise?! I was informed that the elevators were right behind my room. My question is why would you assigned a room that you know is not quiet to a guest if you have more than 700 rooms and have PLENTY of availability. I do not understand why you would put an exhausted guest through this unpleasant situation. I was going to stay longer, but change my mind after this experience. Very disappointing for a nice hotel!

Went with my wife for our anniversary and used points. (We are platinum elite members). They downgraded us at checkin and the only thing we ate at the hotel gave us horrible food poisoning for over a week. Hands down the worst Intercontinental I’ve been too. *Built in 1977
