We stayed at the Mariposa room. It is roomy and nice for the price. The staff are friendly. Breakfasts are good. Location is good; walkable to many restaurants, attractions in romantic zone and Malecon. We will very likely to stay here again when we came back to Puerto Vallarta.

This hotel is something my husband and I just happened to find while in the PVR area and what a find it was, we were within walking distance to everything , the early morning mountain views are spectacular ! we were walking distance to downtown with night clubs restaurants art galleries everything this hotel has to be one of my favorite hotels in the world ( I've been all over Europe and Asia) the staff was wonderful and so accommodating. the pool was sparkling and clean and the hot tub (which has an even better view of mountains) was so relaxing we spent most of our time there. all in all this hotel was spectacular and I cannot wait to come back and stay longer.

This is our home away in PV. We've been three times now, love the funkiness and quirkiness of this property, the friendliness and professionalism of the staff. We enjoy the location buried in the Zona Romantica with an easy fifteen minute walk to the beach. It is not a cookie cutter property, and those looking for an all-inclusive beach front property should keep looking. But if you want to feel a little bit like a local, this is a great spot. Most of Puerto Vallarta's great dining is within easy walking distance. The only times we got in a car was to go the Marina for a whale watching excursion, and again to visit the Botanical Gardens. Everything else is easily available by foot.

When we first checked into the hotel we were really wowed by the decor and the style of the place unfortunately cracks soon started to show.

The pluses of this property are the property itself (though quite noisy due to construction work nearby), very quick and strong Wi-Fi and the friendliness of some staff.

Unfortunately the minuses far outweigh the positives,

We were shown to our room and other areas of the hotel but we were not informed that no one manned the desk in the evening, Wi-Fi password or that the front door was locked in the evening and that we had to use the side door.
We were both concerned that there was no one manning the desk in the evening and just had WhatsApp no to contact.

More alarming was the fact then when we came back to the room after a days sightseeing our door was open, not just unlocked but left ajar where we presume the maid had forgot to close-this is a major security risk and one we were very alarmed about. Obviously we alerted reception who advised that they would check with housekeeping to make sure the door was closed and locked.

To our dismay the same thing happened two days later when the door was once again left unlocked and open. Understandably we were very upset that this happened again.

My partner asked to see the owner who came the next day. Later the next day my partner got a WhatsApp message from him showing the maid locking the door and us arriving to an opened door. There was no explanation other than he would get the lock changed which never materialised. Locked doors do not just open, ( reception made a joke that it was a ghost! ) we presume someone else entered the room and left it open but obviously the hotel would not admit to this or show cctv to this effect.

We really felt that the hotel did not take our security seriously and this was just brushed under the carpet with nothing else mentioned from the owner.

One day no soap was left and the next no soap or shampoo. All very inconsistent.

There are no coffee/tea making facilities in the room and no sealed water supplied ( though there is an unsealed glass bottle of water that we didn’t drink )

It’s a real shame as the actual property is one of the nicest we have stayed in and we wanted to love it but is badly let down by the inconsistency of service and security issues.

Came here with some of my friends for a buddy's birthday, and Grant, Jerry, and the whole team at Rivera del Rio made out trip so special.

It is a beautiful, incredibly tastefully decorated home with compartmentalized spaces so that everyone can party together but retreat to their own space for downtime. The views from the top floor were incredible. I could have come just for my room and the hot tub and had a fabulous time.

But the staff also did their utmost to make sure we took full advantage of everything that PV has to offer. Grant, in particular, was an essential guide to our magical moment. And it is not something he had to do. In all, this place goes above and beyond expectation for a very reasonable price, and if you have the opportunity to stay here you cannot turn it down.

This hotel is so beautiful and magical. The owner has lovingly restored his grandmother’s home into a charming and breathtaking boutique hotel. We have been returning guests for many years. The staff is so friendly and the breakfasts are delicious. The location is great: along an enchanting mountain river that leads you right to the ocean. In the heart of the Zona Romantica, a delightful and very safe neighborhood full of great restaurants, shops and galleries. The beds are so comfortable, the linens are luxurious, and the entire hotel has a filtered water system. We cannot say enough good things about this place.

We booked this property though HotelTonight, and boy did they not do their homework before offering this property on their platform. Warning: this hotel is an active construction site, and we were put in a room with a balcony underneath construction that had no scaffolding. We were separated from construction with plastic tarps. I don't believe the building site was up to code by any countries standards. The noise made it impossible to rest or relax. The power, and therefore the WiFi, cut out several times in the two short hours we were there before deciding to leave for another hotel. Upon informing the property that we would be leaving and expected to be refunded for our experience, they wouldn't even consider returning our money despite the false advertising and clearly unsafe conditions of the room we were offered. I spent 5 hours (no exaggeration) on the phone with the property and HotelTonight to arrive at a resolution and still have no refund. Strongly suggest you book elsewhere...plenty of good hotel and Airbnb options in Zona Romantica. See pictures for reference.

I just want to preface this by saying that we came back to Puerto Vallarta because we loved Rivera del Rio so much and this is where we came to celebrate my birthday (again). This trip however was filled with disappointment rather than joy and charm.

Check in was done in a demolition zone. Construction was going on and we didn’t realize this until I received a text 30 minutes before check in (I did email days prior to verify with no reply).

Our room was just OK, the new river rooms were lacking the ‘charm’ that the rest of the building has. The river view was obstructed by all the construction that was going on (photo).

We did try to have breakfast one day but had nowhere to actually enjoy breakfast because a large party was occupying the majority of the functioning living/pool space- this was probably our main issue. We were not informed about the large party prior to our arrival. Once we checked in, we were told about a very disruptive (their words) large party that assumed the entire hotel was theirs. My concern is WHY BOOK US?!? We were no longer allowed to use the amenities that we had appreciated in the past - no pool, no breakfast area, no patio access. The staff at the hotel had texted me to inform me that we were NOT allowed to use these amenities during certain hours but yet, we still had to pay full price. I wish we had been compensated our money rather than pay full price to stay at a place that you are considered ‘beneath’ someone else.

Super huge disappointment all around. We actually tried to avoid the hotel at all hours so we didn’t interfere with the large party.

We did express our issues to Grant and Carolina and neither of them seemed too concerned with our neglected stay. Wish something would have been done to resolve some of our concerns but literally nothing…

Dear Brooke, So sorry for your disappointment. When you had asked for a reservation you knew that we were full. You wanted to stay with us even asking to be put on a waiting list. We opened a room on the new side of the hotel to accommodate you. As i recall you were actually excited to see the hotel come together as you had visited previously when we were still in the middle stage of construction. We did have the historic party of the hotel rented as a villa. A temporary lobby and breakfast area was set up in the Cortez Suite. I believe that you were served breakfast by the pool one day. The pool, bar area, and jacuzzi were open to all guests of the hotel other than 3 hours from 4 to 6 for a private function. I certainly do not believe that Carolina or Grant would have made you feel any less important than anyone else staying at the hotel, as we value all our guests, especially return visitors.

This is a unique property in a residential neighborhood of Zona Romantica that we found on a whim and booked 6 weeks out from our stay. If you are looking for an experience where you actually get to experience PV on foot, by meeting people, this is the place for you. The hotel itself is kitschy, with every room uniquely decorated (we're from California, and it reminds us of the Madonna Inn). It has 2 pools, with the rooftop pool being the most popular (it's the pool with the bar :) ). The location is directly next to Rio Cuale , and depending on what room you get (we were in Rasputin), you will have a great view of the river, life passing by and all of the interesting houses on the other side of the river. We were here for 6 nights/7 days, and met interesting folks at the pool every afternoon. The hotel is clean, well maintained and has an elevator. Our room was well appointed, with a comfortable bed, a safe and a large shower. Pretty much all of the Zona Romantica is within 15 mins or less from this hotel, with an infinite amount of great food, entertainment, the beach , etc. close by. Casa Kimberley, aka "Elizabeth Taylor's House" is about a 5 min walk. Be advised that it is in a residential neighborhood, with real people, dogs, motorcycles, etc. passing on the street below the hotel (which we prefer), so if you are looking for a quiet cloistered resort experience, probably looks somewhere else. The staff of this property are what really make it special though, EVERYONE is welcoming, genuine and warm, with (as many other reviewers have pointed out), special mention going to Grant and Jerry (and Elizabeth the cat!). The breakfast is also standout, and great value for the money, with local favorites and a vegan option, deliciously prepared. It is also worth mentioning that this hotel is genuinely LGBTQ+ friendly (but everyone is of course warmly welcomed). We are looking forward to our next stay. Thanks for the great stay Rivera Del Rio!
