Travelers' Choice
Boana Torre Malibu is the largest gay condo-hotel in Puerto Vallarta. The hotel is also open to heterosexuals. Torre Malibu is near the famous Playa Los Muertos, a gay beach known worldwide for its famous ``blue chairs`` and green chairs. A great selection of restaurants and a lively nightlife await you just a few steps from the hotel. At Boana Torre Malibu, we offer a wide selection of rooms, which are condos actually! You will have the feeling of staying in a true suite rather than in a simple hotel room.

I had a chance to stay in penthouse unit 902 for a week followed by several nights in unit 001. Unit 902 is not managed by Boana Torre themselves but by a different rental company, so you deal with that company for all check-in and any issues, but unit 001 is handled by Boana Torre so their own reception can help with everything. I'll split my review to discuss the units separately. For Unit 902: This is a unique penthouse condo unit with breathtaking views. With the sliding balcony doors open, you get a constant sea breeze and hear the sound of the waves continuously. The ACs in the living room and bedroom are really strong, but I barely ever needed to turn on the AC even when it was 90 degrees every day. The 3 ceiling fans and the ocean breeze kept it very pleasant. Anyone staying should be aware that there is significant noise from the nearby Almar Resort's rooftop bar every evening and some afternoons when they do weekend brunch events. The emcee and drag performers' mics and music are unobstructed by anything till it hits the condo, so you essentially hear every song and performance as if you were next door. The club lights even hit your windows so you feel like you are next to a club. It was actually fun to watch since you have an unobstructed view, but if you don't care for the noise, this might bother you. Some quirks to point out to anyone thinking of this unit: 1) the bedroom's en suite bathroom has strange really low ceilings in the shower, and the "ventilation" consists of an exposed opening in the wall that's about the size of one removed vertical brick, and the opening looks out into the entryway of the next door unit. The big issue is that the opening is right at typical head height, and it meant that when the people in the next unit are coming in or out of their unit, they can see you perfectly in the bathroom, especially at night. You are literally on the other side of a brick wall with a brick removed. It means your neighbors can see you sitting on the toilet or naked at the bathroom counter. We're not taking just seeing a bit of your head, but depending on their height, they can see right in completely, even all the way through your bedroom if you leave the bathroom door open. I'm no prude and don't mind being a bit of an exhibitionist but this was a bit too much, and it meant that I had to use the living room's bathroom the whole time I was there to avoid embarrassment of them seeing me while I was pooing or drying myself after a shower. 2) The other side of the wall in your bedroom is the living room of the other unit, and I think from the way the wood ceiling beams don't offer much sound dampening, I could hear the neighbors every time they were in their living room. I don't mean the muffled sounds you might expect from having thin walls, but rather you can hear them perfectly as if they were on the other side of an office cubicle and understand every word being said. Fortunately, I believe I had no neighbor staying in the next door unit for most of my stay, but for the final few nights when someone checked in there, I was unable to sleep in the bedroom since I could hear them talking, and hear the the sound of the TV. I could tell they were not being loud and were just talking at normal volume, and this is a flaw in the design of the units, so I did not complain to the management company about it since the other unit's occupants were not being unreasonable in the level of noise they were making. I was forced to sleep on the sofas in the living room for the final few nights of my stay since it was impossible to sleep at midnight as they were still awake till late night every night. 3) The bedroom has no nightstand or table, only the bed and nothing else, so there is nowhere to put your phone or other devices except the floor. 4) The unit gets a fair number of beetles and the big outdoor cockroaches if you leave the balcony doors open, especially at dusk. I had to kill and sweep out big bugs multiple times every day, including ones that ended up on my bed and on the bathroom towels. Can't be helped in a tropical climate but kinda nasty. 5) The wood beam ceiling at the kitchen area had a leak during rain so that there was steady drops down onto the kitchen floor. A towel on the floor solved it, but I think this should have been a known issue since the wood ceiling area where the leak was coming had white mold or fungus spots clustered together from the moisture exposure, and it is easy to spot on the black ceiling. 6) The light bulbs on the wall lights below the living room A/C and in the bedroom near the glass wall were broken and this should be part of standard maintenance checks between guests. 7) The safe's pins were left in the locked position (with the safe door open) by a previous guest but I didn't want to bother the management company to reset it but again, this could have been discovered during preparation between guests. Despite these flaws or quirks, I still would stay here again. I understand many properties at older buildings will have unique quirks and I don't expect perfection. None of the flaws were enough that I felt the need to involve the management company during my stay. For the price paid and the unbelievable view, I enjoyed my stay. The biggest hesitancy I would have is that if you have neighbors in the penthouse unit next to you (which is also managed by the same management company), and they are in their living room talking, you can expect to hear them quite loudly in your bedroom. For unit 001: This is a front unit that is not part of the main tower of the building. Units 001 and 002 are below the pool deck, with balconies overlooking Amapas Street. You are basically one block above street level and your balcony view is of the building across the street, rather than a view over the pool deck as is the case with all other Boana Torre units except 001 and 002. The unit has the advantage of lots of windows along the side that face the building steps and the V Azul condo next door, so you get lots of light. The front door to the units is halfway up the steps that lead from the building to the street. I actually liked this layout as I found it convenient to come and go from the building, and since I had just come from a week in unit 902, this was a nice change of view to be able to sit on the balcony watching the cars and people pass by outside. It was very pleasant and home-like. The unit itself is in good shape, and furniture was comfortable. The bed was a bit on the soft side but was huge, as I believe it was actually 2 twin beds pushed together. Note that the bedroom only has a thin unusable high window so can feel a bit claustrophobic, but the AC and ceiling fan definitely keep things very cool. I didn't have the bug issues I had in 902, so that was very nice. Unlike unit 902 that gets lots of noise from Almar's Top Bar, in this unit, you get music and mic noise from the nearby Blue Chairs when they have events at their deck, but this only happened one time during the days I stayed and felt rather like being next to a daytime tea dance so it wasn't anything that bothered me. The wifi router that serves the 2 front units was out the first day I checked in, but the staff was super responsive and got it fixed by early the next morning. Speaking of staff, this is where Boana Torre really shines. Their reception staff is super friendly and helpful and go out of their way to greet you and help you. They are a big reason that I would definitely return to this building for future stays. I think if it's your first time at the building, you might want to choose any of the units in the main tower rather than floor 0 as you miss out on seeing other guests using the pool and being able to look out at the water if in one of the upper units.

What more can you ask for. A pool, big space and even a bottled water dispenser to make it easier. Great place with a private rooftop pool! Location is great ( a lot of stairs but not horrible). Just perfect! Make sure to try and get a reservation at Le Kliff while in town!

Boana Torre Malibu is in a good location, the people at the reception are great, very helpful and welcoming. Loved the pool area. The unit I was staying needs a major renovation, but it was right for the price I wanted to pay. Would recommend and stay again.

We came out of a 10-day trip in the jungle SW of PV and stayed in rm 201 for a night. Everything was ideal - entry through the secure access, greeting, checkin, amenities, room quality/size/cleanliness. We had a great view from our room or balcony even though we were only on floor 2. The pool is great. The shower was large and luxurious. The kitchen was beyond our expectations as was the furniture. Can’t ask for more in terms of comfort and value. We’ll be back. Thank you!
