I used to stay at Hotel Belmar. Sure the doors to the rooms are literally so worn that you can see through them. The AC barely kept the room from being hot. The tv had a $5 antenna dangling from it. (You could get about 3 Spanish channels) A chair in the room was so worn and old that I didn't want to touch it. Everything was in bad condition. There is of course the view and location which made the above forgivable and sometimes fun. That was until they raised their price to $73 per night. If they charged a fair price, which would be about $35 at the most per night, the place would still have its charm. You are better off going to Hotel La Siesta for $50 which is in the same great location, has a great view of the ocean, and everything is much newer and works.
The common areas are pretty well worn and the elevator is scary, but my room was fine. The hot water is turned off in the afternoon, which is odd. The rooms with an ocean view are best, but can be loud at night as it is on the Malecon.
A friend and I stayed here in March 2000, before any renovations had been done. Stayed on the 5th floor. Elevator button said "S" (sótano) because the "5" was missing. Room big and two queen beds. Bathroom was open to the room next door at the top of the shower wall. No problem, no one could see over. The pool was cool and relatively clean, and we enjoyed it a lot. Bar fun. Copa de Leche restaurant down the street good for breakfast. Walking distance to Plaza Machado and Centro Historico. Bus less than 10 centavos to Zona Dorada. Planning to stay here again in January!
Ive stayed at the hotel belmar numerous times over the last 22 years. Its Hit and miss on beds in the rooms and don't try and stay there during bike week and Semana santos unless you are booked months in advance, but very accommodating and easy on the pocket book! Its also very close to a beach and within walking distance of a lot of local shopping! I love staying there!
A loyal customer since the 1990"s, I am happy to see the Belmar getting some room upgrades. My 5th floor room was updated, now with modern air conditioning. The property also seems to have an increasing number of long-term renters. If you enjoy the Belmar, you get it. You just can't beat staying in the Olas Altas section of Mazatlan. In addition, several places to have a drink and a bite to eat have recently popped up. A fun part of town! As of March 2016, room rates were 500 pesos for interior rooms, 600 pesos for ocean view rooms, and 800 pesos for remodeled rooms with central air.
