We recently visited Hotel Coral & Marina (HCM) for a wine tasting getaway. Saturday morning we met Alejandro Moreno, the Coral Express Driver, in Chula Vista. He arrived with a warm smile and assisted us with our luggage into the shuttle. He crossed the Otay border with absolute ease- he really knows his way around the US and Baja. When we inquired about a landmark or a statistic regarding Ensenada, Valle de Guadalupe or Tijuana, he had the answers and even elaborated with great information. His driving was swift and safe. We enjoyed his company and invited him to have lunch with us. We stopped at Puerto Nuevo and asked Alejandro for a recommendation for lobster- it was excellent! The lobster, the price and the view were much better than the restaurant that we normally visit. Upon arrival at HCM, we were greeted by the always-friendly bellman and Adalberto Villa, who is welcoming and very professional. We changed into our bathing suits to enjoy the warm afternoon sun, poolside until our rooms we available to check into. Each suite had modern decor, a sitting area with couch and coffee table, a safe, a very comfortable bed, an incredible view, a mini fridge, coffee maker, 2 bottles of water and soap, shampoo, etc.. We later went into town (only an $8 taxi for 5 adults) for a casual dinner, then back to HCM for some much needed rest. One note: my husband accidentally left his phone in the taxi coming back to the hotel. The next morning we called reception and the driver had returned the phone to the HCM front desk. This was such a relief and we were thankful to both the driver and HCM. In the morning we all had intentions of visiting the gym, but opted to sleep in and take a walk around the marina and the walking path towards Ensenada. Sunday HCM brunch is brilliant! The selections of food are too many to count and the servers are helpful to bring you any beverage you like. The only thing that we did not enjoy were the oysters. The rest of the food was very good and the view of the marina from your table is amazing! The wine tour operator picked us up at 11am and drove us safely to Valley de Guadalupe, first stop El Corcho Rosa. I requested this small, intimate winery. Female owned and operated and created from the ground up by Sitara, the owner and her daughter Ava. The wine is lovely, the story is incredible and Lilly, the winery dog, stole our hearts. Next stop was Cava el Laurel. This is a beautiful wine/beer/food location, tucked way back into the valley, we would have never found this one on our own. Some of us did wine, some did beer, we all agreed that the beer was their strong suit. We would have eaten but our next stop was a late lunch so we wanted to save our appetites. We arrived Primitivo Restaurant around 2:30pm, the outdoor dining is settled under a very old, large oak tree - gorgeous! Our server, a young female, was patient and kind. She answered all our questions and made suggestions. Many dishes appeared to be cooked over the outdoor wood fire, the smell will spark your appetite. We ordered the tuna, the octopus, and the steak as entrees - each is enough for 2 people as it comes family-style in 3-5 serving for everyone at the table to try, utilizing most of the animal. We also had the clams. We enjoyed the flavors that we could taste- but some of the dishes were over salted. The restrooms were clean and modern. The wine selection was good and we all agreed that it was one of the best meals we’ve had in the valley. Back to the hotel, we went to the hot tub to soak in our last night at HCM and Ensenada. There is an indoor and outdoor pool and jacuzzi. The gym is terrific, complete with an ocean view yoga room and water aerobics. Monday morning we had brunch (smaller during the week, but still very good), then we were pleased to find out that Alejandro was taking us back to the US. We arrived at the Otay border, got out of the shuttle with our luggage and waited in line for an hour and 45 minutes (we used to just walk through- no wait). This is no reflection on HCM, only the current state of our border. Once through customs, we walked about a block and met Alejandro for our final leg of the journey to Chula Vista. A big thank you to Veronica Ochoa, Director of Transportation at HCM. She not only made our transportation arrangements to/from HCM, but also for the wine tour AND the reservations at the wineries and restaurant. Done to perfection and her recommendations are terrific! HCM is taking many precautions to ensure everyone’s health and safety with several wash stations, both hand and shoes at the entrance to the different facilities. It is also very busy this time of year, so I suggest making your reservations at least 30 days in advance. Next time we go, we will likely stay longer and return to the US the middle of the week, to reduce our time at the border. Many thank you to Mr. Villa, Ms. Ochoa and the rest of the team at HCM for a much needed relaxing and fun getaway with friends!

I cannot say enough good things about this beautiful hotel. The rooms are spacious and have wonderful balconies overlooking the Pacific. Enjoyed to restaurants in sure. The day we arrived our room was delayed in being ready and the manager gave us breakfast. Unexpected but appreciated.

I’m going to leave the review I feel is honest. I’m leaving 3 stars only because the manager upgraded us after staff failed to provide wash cloths for bathing. We called 3 times and even went downstairs but never received any until the next day and then they only brought up 2. Are we all supposed to share wash cloths? My daughter had to use a sock to bathe herself the first night. In our first room the carpet was absolutely filthy, I didn’t even want to walk barefooted on it. There was no decor in the room, no bath mats when getting out of the shower so if you slip you’ll be in a world of hurt. We were also told that rooms stay empty for 24 hours after a guest checks out for covid precautions but this is a lie. We tried to check in about an hour early and we were told no because the room was being turned over. I thought the room was empty for 24 hours? There’s an iron but no ironing board. The mini fridge is barely cold. The furniture was dirty and stained. The TVs were non functional. If you pay a less amount for your room be prepared for less and uncleanliness. The manager upgraded us to a master suite and the room was 100% better. But the beds. SO unbelievably uncomfortable, I felt like I was sleeping on the floor. Perhaps because I have a memory foam mattress at home and it’s not a spring mattress, I woke up in a good deal of pain. Finally, this is supposed to be a family friendly place, and while I was sitting on my balcony with my family a female guest came out on to her balcony completely naked. Absolutely naked, we saw everything. Her breasts and her other private parts. We were so uncomfortable and shocked that we all went back inside. There is still clearly a social class hierarchy in Ensenada if you pay elite money you get elite service, if you pay discounted rates, you’ll get barely basic service. I enjoyed my visit, but I won’t be coming to Ensenada to sleep again.

Our stay was fantastic. We were celebrating our anniversary and reserved the "honeymoon package" and the room was set up very beautifully with roses and petals. Every staff member we interacted with was very kind and professional. The massage at the spa was great and extremely relaxing as well. Balcony had a great view of the Marina and pool area. Also super convenient. There is a Marina convenience store right next to the hotel to buy water and random necessities. The uber to downtown Ensenada is only about 10 minutes and between 100-140 pesos each way.
