Having just fallen in love with koh Lanta and our previous resort, we wondered how we would now find our new place to stay at Phu Petra.
However from the minute we arrived we were checked in with ease , left our bags in luggage store , to then dash off on their courtesy shuttle ‘truck’ ( cute and authentic - driven by the lovely ‘ Lip’ also bellboy of hotel ) to get to meet friends on Railey beach.
I thought our ‘family hillside villa’ ( as big as it was and a beautiful bathroom ) had 2 separate bedrooms, but it was my error, so I approached reception to see if there was anything we could do. They promptly sorted the situation with a small charge to move to the pool side ‘family suite ‘ this was an amazing area of space, and as the next day was my sons Birthday they lavishly decorated it with Balloons , banners and a birthday cake towel with flashing fairy lights !! Along With a real cake too !
But what I rate this place for the most is not just being a ‘number’ and the staff being so personable in every way .
This place is out of the main strip which I was so glad of, the view of mountains , palm trees and sounds of nature made this peaceful yet so accessible to everything else. The staff would sort anything and everything from trips we had found , to checking on our 15 and 11 year old when we decided to climb tiger temple, and they stayed at resort.
I read about firm beds ... you are in Thailand!! they are so much better for you , but the offer to put toppers on is there if you want softer !
The key here is kindly mention anything and they will do their best to help , no point moaning after the event !
Thank you so much phu Petra , Mr Nat , Doy and the team, you were fabulous .
Please do not miss going to ‘The Beer Garden’ over the road , we went by default and returned so Many times , seeing the lovely ‘Nani’ and
‘Nit Noy ‘ who served us . Fab food , and so reasonable In price.
We also used the lady at the end of the Road for laundry !
This is our first experience of Thailand and moving around - normally it’s Tui , one button and one booking .... but this was so easy and loved every minute.

We checked in thinking the hotel being closed. Minimum staff but maximum effort. Our room 129, end of block of three, looked upto the pool. We had nobody in the adjoining room, so cant say how noisy it would be if there was. First night there was a massive spider when we got back from town. We phoned reception who sent 2 staff over who managed was being to squash it, thankfully. I commented on hotels.com after our check in about the lack of towels and no mosquito net. We returned later in the day to find a full set of towels and mozzie net over the huge bed. We didnt have any 'insect' incidents after that. Breakfast eggs were cooked to order so were fresh and hot, but the thai food looked like it was from the previous nights dinner. Coffee was warm and bread dry. I toasted the croissants to make them edible, but lush homemade jam. Numerous staff but disorganised. The cocktail bar was random, ordered at the bar but it was for show, all drinks made away from view in the hotel. The shuttle to town was not often enough in the day and finished way too early, 21.20. Paying for a tuktuk from 'longtail boat' corner or midway up the street was 150Bt.
This has the making of a fab small resident hotel. It just needs tweaked and some money invested in the staff.

Wow. What a stay!
Aonang Phu Resort is perhaps the best stay in town for the price per night.
Firstly the rooms are absolutely huge. Not only do you get a massive bedroom, but there’s a private study area, a huge bathroom with bath and shower & a front porch to relax during the evening.
Secondly the pool. The views of the surrounding hills and jungle are stunning. There could be a couple more sun beds but we never had issues. The pool is well maintained and modern.
In terms of location you are about a 10 minute walk from the top of town. It’s about another 20 minutes to the beach, but we loved the walk through the jungle and passing all the restaurants. Those with a scooter will be absolutely fine. There’s also a free shuttle service to the beach on the hour throughout the day.
Plenty of cheaper restaurants closer too. Highly recommend Rainbow which is about a 7 minute walk away. Tee restaurant in the jungle is an absolute must and can be reached by walking 20 minutes deeper into the jungle or a quick taxi journey to the nearby 5 star hotel ‘Anana’.
There’s a Macro superstore close by should you need to stock up on supplies & you’re close to the Mountain Buddha Temple too.
Unfortunately the on site restaurant is closed but we experienced this in a lot of hotels across Thailand. We presume it’s a result of COVID.
However unlike other places where you just have to get on with it, Aonang Phu provides a buffet of toast, cookies, teas, coffees, hot chocolate & jams every morning by the pool. Completely free!
The staff are wonderful. So friendly and helpful. Room was cleaned every day & easy to book taxi from front desk.
We had a power cut one morning and lost all water and electricity. The staff had the issue fixed within the hour.
If you’re looking for your own private piece of paradise away from the noise of the main strip, but somewhere you can use as a base to easily get to day tours and other islands. This is the place!
We payed around £30 a night and honestly it felt like we should have been paying three times that!
We will be back!

This our 5th visit to this hotel so it must be good. I have been in the customer service business for 40 years and have been lucky enough to stay at nice hotels around the world. From the moment we checked in and were welcomed by the staff and given a lovely cake everything is great. All staff without exception are friendly and go out of there way to please. The hotel is about a 40 minute walk to the beach but the hotel does provide a regular shuttle. Ao Nang beach is nothing special but there are lots of small islands you can get a long tail boat to, Railey beach is also very nice. There are plenty of nice restaurants near to the hotel and in Ao Nang. The rooms in the hotel are very large, all ground level and spotlessly clean, with a king sized bed which in our opinion is very comfortable. The view from the lovely pool over the mountain is the best view from a pool that I’ve very seen. The breakfast is good for a small hotel and has everything we need. We book direct with the hotel by email, Nat the manager always replies within a day. I would recommend this hotel and hopefully will be back next year.

Absolutely love this hotel. I stayed here 5 years ago with my children and it is still as amazing as I remembered. In the jungle. A lovely walk from the hotel to the town where you get to see a bit of real Thailand. The rooms are beautiful. We were very lucky that there were only 4 other couples on site (covid has been hard on Thailand) because of that it felt like we had our own private hotel. The restaurant and bar were not operating which was great as we were able to bring in own drink. The staff have been so helpful. Free shuttle to town. Will definitely stay again and recommend to anyone who wants to enjoy the nature of Thailand.

After reading some reviews AFTER booking I was a little concerned !
No need . We had a lovely stay.
We have stayed in Ao Nang on and off for 28 years and watched it grow from beautiful tranquility to tourist hell.
Phu Petra was like stepping back in time . Lovely location , attentive helpful staff , big clean rooms.
It's not a 5 star luxury resort. It is a 5 star typical southern Thai charm accomadation and HUGE value for money $600 australian dollars for 8 nights .
Light free breakfast . Shuttle.bus to main Aonang . 5 min walk to some great quiet Thai family restaurants .
Great pool area .
Little.peace of Heaven in AoNang.
Thankyou Phu Petra

Beautiful place, far from the madding crowd of Aonang but close enough to walk to the main stretch. Villa is huge and has a bath, drop shower, mini fridge and deck area. The view is stunning and you feel quite remote even though you are close to town. The pool was fab and the kids lived swimming up to 9pm. The room was great and had everything we needed. Stop at 7/11 for sodas and drinks if you like to have something in your room. There is only coke and soda at the hotel. There is no food but the lay on a simple breakfast which is enough to get you on your way. The staff were delightful and nothing was too much trouble. They sorted laundry, bowls and extra glasses for us when required. You can book yoga at the hotel up the road and there is a nice pizza place two minutes walk away. Also Rainbow restaurant 5 min walk from villas is a nice cheap meal. The villas could use a spruce up but honestly we loved it and it felt like great value for money. We walked down to the beach and were relieved to get back to our peaceful accommodation.

What a fantastic hotel. It is an oasis of green and incredibly beautiful nature. It is beautifully and peacefully located a little way from the main road, so you only hear birds and peace. The rooms are good, big and maybe a little worn, but were perfect for us. The reception was always smiling and incredibly helpful whenever we had a problem. I would recommend Phu Petra to anyone who appreciates a quiet and beautiful holiday.

We stayed at this resort 7 years ago and loved it. The pics you see on the website are old ones and now are very misleading. If we could have rates <1 we would have. Extremely run down. No restaurant, not even a pop cooler. A total of 6 broken lounge chairs for pool. Exposed wiring all around pool. No hand rails on main steps. Uneven concrete surfaces everywhere. Landscaping has been abandoned, long grass and neglected. Rooms are horrible. Old, tired old towels thin, ripped. Bed is frightful. Bath smells of sewer gas. Lobby looks abandoned and not welcoming. This is the absolute worse hotel we have stayed in in all our world travels....even worse than 3rd world nation standards. We paid 155 cad per night and this should have been 50 or less per night. Last night in am we had no water for showering and washroom. We reported and all they said is sorry.Don't ignore this review, and yes we are picky, but being honest. Book elsewhere...not here.
