I stayed here for one night with my family. The staff was immaculately sweet and hospitable, they started the fireplace for both of our rooms, our dinner and breakfast was fresh and delicious. This place is super unique and contains a lot of history. Although I did not mind this at all, wifi is provided in certain areas of the property. It gets chilly at night around the area but like I said we had a fireplace started for us, we were given heaters in each of our rooms, and we were also given these heating pads that are filled with water and those kept us super warm and cozy; my sister and I enjoyed it! The gardens on the property are gorgeous and it’s a nice, quiet environment.

Thank you for your stay and warmth toward the staff - who you inspired - and appreciation of Cusin's historical ambience. Establishing and maintaining ever-improving wi-fi in such historic and dispersed buildings has been a task; thank you for your patience. Please return soon to this special place, andits hot-water bottles!

Off a side road in the scruffy town center of San Pablo del Lago, enter the gates and surrender yourself to the experience of a genuine Spanish hacienda. Museum-quality tapestries abound, including actual monastic vestments, ornate candlestick holders wait to be lit, and gorgeous religious paintings are showcased in elaborate frames of gold. You’ve arrived at Hacienda Cusin, a place of unparalleled comfort and grandeur that nestles well within a largely indigenous community.

The local staff, including Hector, Enrique, Valeria, Daniela, and Ramiro, are quietly attentive and will ensure breakfast and dinner are to your liking, always with edibles fresh from the garden. If you play your cards right, Ramiro will serenade you with his guitar by the fireside with heartfelt Ecuadorian songs. Wander about the hacienda grounds and you'll discover new treasures each day, such as the lovely “tree cross” iconography that adorn the property. It’s all the creation of Señor Nick, the monastic maestro whose unstoppable vision has resulted in an escape to the Andean highlands like no other.

I stayed in Room No. 1 (the “Matisse” room), with beautiful artwork on the window shutters, a lit fireplace in the evening, and a bed of comfort with a hot water bottle to warm me. A door at the back of the room and large windows in the bathroom open onto a splendid garden with lemon trees that beckon you to explore the extensive property. (This review is in contrast to that of @Maryam S).

Place yourself in the hands of an expert guide recommended by the Hacienda (such as Christian), who will share the secrets of the Mohanda lake with its impressive grandeur. There’s Cubilche to climb as the clouds swallow you up in a shroud of mist, and visits to neighboring craft villages, where you might have the great fortune to meet Farinango, who weaves textiles on hand-made looms. I also took a cooking class with Claudia at her home and can now make traditional Andean soup, quinoa fritters, and more.

This is the perfect time to visit Hacienda Cusin, when you will have the grounds and attention of the staff mostly to yourself. A stay of at least five nights is recommended. Never will you have such a taste of hacienda greatness for such a modest price. Forget Galapagos and make your reservation today.

We spent three lovely days at Hacienda Cusin last week. We estimated it is our 15th visit over the last 30 years. Hacienda Cusin is one of our favorite places in Ecuador and it was looking as beautiful as ever. The garden room we stayed in was spotless, newly painted and cozy - with Cusin's special touch of hot water bottles and a wood fire every evening in each room/bed. The gardens were as well kept as ever and we were given a wonderful impromptu tour of the expanded vegetable garden from the head gardener. The staff were attentive and friendly and the food (breakfasts and dinners) were delicious. It was wonderful to be back after a long absence and our stay only left us determined to return soon! Thank you to everyone there for a delightful few days.

This is a RUSTIC, historic, old hacienda in need of renovation. While I agree with other reviewers that the place is beautiful, it is not for travelers used to luxury or comfort, and it is also not for business travelers. The wifi connection is patchy at best and you need to be in specific areas of the property to even get a signal, so if you have to work or stay connected to business or family, o not stay here.
Also, the rooms are comfortable, but if you have any disability or travel with an elderly person who needs safety features in the room, this is also not for you. The cobblestone roads make it very difficult for people to walk on and accessibility features are not available in room or bathrooms or common areas. The reception is located in a separate area at a distance from the main house and the cabins. They have bells available to ring if you need anything, but nobody ever came the 3 times we rang a bell, once because the movie they set up for us in the video room wasn’t working, another time because the library and video room were full of smoke because of a fireplace malfunction, and another time to tell them our room were not clean and it was 3 pm. They tell you to reach them via WhatsApp but their account (if you can connect from a common area) doesn’t seem to be active ever.
They are clearly understaffed. The ladies who clean rooms are exhausted and complain about the work load.
Most of the staff members are friendly, but not of them do not speak any English, so we saw people who were either lost or asking for simple things like a Glass of milk or water and struggling to be understood.
The “game room” is extremely dated, musty, and the ping pong rackets are so old you may not be able to play at all, even if you can tolerate the smell in the room.
Finally, this I also not a place for you if you are a foodie. The food is mediocre and the menu extremely limited. You would also expect traditional Ecuadorian food but instead, you’ll find chicken nuggets and sandwiches in the menu, which are not even good quality. The soups from the daily menu were tasteless and our entrees and desserts poor quality. If you’re used to great food or have traveled extensively, this food will not impress you.
In summary, this place is beautiful and it could be a true gem if it was managed properly, but since apparently even the owner himself lives in NY and it doesn’t seem like the manager has traveled enough to understand the needs of international well-traveled people, this is only good for those looking for a rustic, isolated place to stay while doing other activities and tours.
We met a few retirees looking for a Turk retreat who seemed to love the history and rustic style and didn’t mind the deficiencies. We are in our 40’s and have traveled around the world, so this was a beautiful setting but we wouldn’t come back or recommend it to our friends

We stayed at this Hacienda for one night in January. It is a very nice place to stay with gorgeous grounds. Comfortable room, where a log fire was lit in the evening. Nice reception rooms. It is not close enough to town to eat in the evening so we were looking forward to eating in the beautiful dining room. It is unfortunate that the set meal for $25 was anything but beautiful. The salad was pitiful - almost devoid of ingredients besides lettuce which had not been properly drained. So the salad sat in an oily puddle where the dressing had been added. My companion had soup which he sent back half eaten as tasteless. My main meal was sent back almost uneaten. Fillet steak ordered medium rare was too tough to eat. It was placed on top of a boiled potato cut into four. No attempt had been made to add butter, so it was dry and unappetizing. A few pieces of salad accompanied it. For a facility which grows its own vegetables and advertises that these are used, it was not good enough. My meal was sent back almost untouched. The staff were completely disinterested and did not ask why I hadn't eaten my food or offer an alternative. The dessert was ice cream, which is difficult to get wrong. Stay here, it's lovely. But find somewhere else to eat dinner.

Response from haciendacusin, Guest Relations Manager at Hacienda Cusin
Responded Feb 12, 2020
Thank you for spending such time reviewing your brief stay at Hacienda Cusin. Of 65 other dinner guests in Cusin's two diningrooms (Mainhouse - 27 diners, including you, and Monasterio's refectory - 40 diners), your observations are, fortunately, unique. The cost of your dinner, 'set meal', in an elaborate ambience of logfires, antiques, art (and extensive landscaped gardens) was expensive to create and to maintain. Ongoing staff-meetings have been analyzing every aspect of your disappointing dinner experience for which I apologize.

I stayed here in March 2021. These are the pros and cons.
Pros:
A very beautiful unique Hacienda, beautiful gardens, gorgeous dining room, The gardens are maintained very well
Cons:
The room was too small, very outdated, room required major renovation, the bathroom was like a one star motel’s bathroom,Do not book any activities with them they rip off the customer, they charge way too high for the activities. For example the same hike that you can take a taxi ask a taxi driver to wait for you for three hours to do your hike and bring you back costs $30 the Hacienda charges $110 to arrange it for you. The food is way too expensive, dinner was $30 and it was OK definitely not worth it to pay $30.

I recommend only stay one night because the garden area of the Hacienda is really unique and beautiful but more than that you will be disappointed because the room was not nice at all.
By the way this Hacienda is 25 minutes drive from Ottawa downtown.

Thank you for your appreciation of Cusin's 'Pros', its uniqueness, its gardens and 'gorgeous' diningroom. Did you visit Cusin's Monasterio, or its stables? Thank you, also, for taking such time to list your Cusin 'Cons'. It is always good to read of every perspective and interpretation. 'Cons': Sierra 1, a single guestroom, nik-named 'the Matisse room', recently had a new, wooden floor and window-seats with private garden access door installed; its wardrobe interior redesigned. Staff have repainted Sierra 1's bathroom. I apologize for your not having hot-water. Had you informed staff, or Reception, your room would have been changed. Your dinner in a 'gorgeous diningroom', includes 10% Service and 12% IVA obligatory government taxes. Ambience, is expensive to maintain. Regresa pronto and have a complimentary room upgrade (attn. Abbott Basil).

It truly feels like you are staying in an old hacienda and monastery. Around every corner is a little sculpture, fountain or llama. The rooms feel old fashioned- they come in and make you a fire every evening and leave hot water bottles in your bed! The dining room feels quite magical and the food is traditional Ecuadorian. Service is excellent. My kids loved the horse back ride and riding around the grounds. We also wandered into a game room and there is a beautiful library with fire place to curl up by and read when the evening gets chilly. One of our favorite spots in Ecuador!

We came here without any expectations and were pleased beyond belief. The grounds, rooms, gardens, murals, food and staff were wonderful. The large rooms have fireplaces that the staff light at night, along with delivery of hot water bottles to warm your bed. The included breakfast offered many choices, as did the lunch and dinner menus. Every room had books and there was also a well supplied library. Our stay was peaceful, refreshing and we will happily return.

It's also very close by cab to the famous Otavalo market and Peguche, another nearby town with many local artists and crafts.

And if you have the good fortune to run into the owner and his wife, you will enjoy the interesting and witty conversation!

I can't recommend it highly enough!!!

The staff at Hacienda Cusin will make sure that your trip to the Andean highlands is magical. Before we arrived, we were in contact with Daniela, Melisa and Valeria who responded quickly to any questions or requests. Cusin has lots of options for day trips in the surrounding towns. They organized a dream trip to the hot springs of Chachimbiro with a great guide named Christian who took us to an hacienda owned by Camilo Andrade-a respected Ecuadoran artist- for lunch and a tour of his paintings, sculptures and architecture. They organized a beautiful horseback journey with a wonderful guide, Ulbaldo, who has worked with the horses there for 30 years. He took us through Eucalyptus groves and jaw-dropping mountain views. Every morning we were greeted with fresh cut flowers, tropical fruit, eggs any way and homemade pastries. Hector, Ramiro, Javier, Enrique and Pamela always made eating at Cusin a five star experience. You can choose Lunch and dinner on their fixed menu (that includes three courses) or eat from an extensive selection of other choices. We chose the fixed menu each day with vegetarian options because the three course meals are as beautiful as they are delicious. Most of the meals comes from their organic garden so I never got sick eating their fresh fruits or vegetables. There is plenty to do at Cusin with children and adults. We played ping pong, chess and fuss ball. The gardens are extraordinary and the gardeners love telling you about what they are growing. I set up a scavenger hunt in gardens of the monastery and the gardeners had so much fun setting it up with me, My teenage daughter and her cousins thoroughly enjoyed finding the secret door there. After a wonderful day of hiking and visiting rural villages, we would come back to our room where a fire had been started in the fireplace and hot water bottles had been put beneath the sheets. I even came in one evening when dozens of white roses decorated our Duenita Suite. We stayed at Cusin in 2003 and now wondered why we took so long to come back. We can’t wait to return. This place offers so much for the price you pay which is much lower than most 5 star hotels. Thank you Cusin for all you did to make our trip to Ecuador so magical and meaningful,

Let me start by saying we did not stay the night, so I can’t comment on the status of the rooms which I’ve read in other reviews most of them need a renovation.

However I can absolutely say the food is mediocre at best, not even talking about the regular menu which is limited to a couple of sandwiches and 2 or 3 more options, we were offered the “special” menu they had for New Year’s eve, it was not better either.

We went for lunch (6 adults-3 children) children order nuggets and spaghetti, however one of the spaghettis had a very strong flavor so we asked to have it changed, we were told if we wanted to do that we have to pay for the other plate.

On top of that there was a couple having lunch in the table next to us. My baby was a little upset (he’s teething) so at the end of the lunch when we were having dessert he was a little upset and starting crying, this lady turns around a yells at him SHUT UP!

At the time this happened little did we know this lady was having lunch with one of the owners, which didn’t even apologize for this behavior, but started making excuses for it and justifying it.

If you can’t stand kinds and don’t want to have lunch around them, I can understand. But make your establishment adults only, don’t yell at little babies.

I wouldn’t be too surprised this is how they treat employees too, which I have to say the service was ok.

Thank you for your question. First, please explore haciendacusin, ACTIVITIES link If Backroads has not scheduled a visit to mountaintop Condor Park, about 20 mins. from Cusin - do not miss it. Check times with Cusin's Reception. A drive to Mojanda and hike up to FuyaFuya is hard and worth it. Take a Cusin picnic, or reserve lunch at excellent Casa Mojanda. Don't mss an exploration of El Monasterio de Cusin. Cusin Reception will manage anything you wish. Dress at Cusin is casual. Backroads recommendation for trip clothing will be sufficient.
