This legenderay hotel was initially built as private estate in 1918. Through the ensuing decades, the property changed hands a number of times, until a Dutch caretaker turned it into Pensioner Hotel. The Phoenix name was deliberately chosen by the last proprietor who hoped that it would remain intact forever, believing in the ancient myth of The Phoenix, the sacred fire bird symbolizing regeneration throughout eternity. The Phoenix Hotel is elegantly situated in down town Yogyakarta, the cradle of Javanese civilization. The legendary Malioboro Street is just nearby, while the world herigate Borobudur and Prambanan temples are only an hour drive. Yogyakarta's cultural heritage and picturesque settings emit a distinctive charm that seldom fails its visitors. The 144 beautifully appointed rooms are reflecting the ambiance of bygone era wrapped in modern comfort facilities, enabling its occupant to celebrate a glorious past without losing the beauty of contemporary living.

The restaurant in the hotel lacks knowledge of it's own dishes and is a real issue. As vegetarians, we asked the manager in charge of dining the contents of each of the dishes in the buffet and then asked again by repeating what we had been told. Three time confirmed that there was no meat. When eating, we discovered meat in 2 of the "vegetarian" dishes. Totally shocked, small pieces almost indiscernible. I pointed out that if repeated with people with allergies, such as nut or lactose, it could cause real health issues. Complaining to the duty manager was pointless, he put the blame on us. We would advise caution about food information received at this restaurant.

We've stayed here for 2 nights and feel disappointed with the service. The lack of staff behavior, and the food was not good. The hotel need to upgrade their staff skills to treat the guest equally. The room is old and nothing special, the big shower didn't work.

I brought 11 family members in my trip. We booked 6 rooms for 2-3 Nights. We arrived at the hotel quite late after a tiring long haul and Prambanan trip. The Mr Manager and the reaceptiin group gave us our key in no time and suggested us to rest first before the administration work. I got my room on the ground floor with direct access to the pool, simply amazing. However, doesn’t matter your rooms are, you will see all traditional touches ensuring you feel in Yogyakarta already. Staffs are all accomodating and we can see that the hotel are well maintained. We had our family dinner at the restaurant almost at the last order time, but all served and tasted great. The spa was amazing, would definitely recommend you to try, the best city to get your body pampered. My family came from Scotland, India, Netherlands and Indonesia and all of them had great experiences staying in Phoenix. Definitely will come again.

Lovely hotel in the centre of Yogyakarta. The pool area was very pleasant but the tables were not well cleaned The rooms were well appointed but the bathroom was not clean. Bed clothes were not well cleaned… The staff were very pleasant and very helpful The bar area was very pleasant but a bit tired and in need of a good cleaning Overall a lovely hotel which would warrant a higher rating if there was a little more attention to cleaning throughout.

Our tour guides insist this is the best hotel which is close to the airport, that’s unfortunate. Room 301 is terrible. It was very loud, even with earplugs in and the air condtioner was barely better than just having a fan running. Breakfast had a huge variety of choices but average flavor. Maybe concentrate on less items but more flavorful. Requiring some ice for a bum foot I offered to wait while they brought some to me in the lobby but they kindly insisted that I go to my room and they would bring it up.

My husband and I stayed at the Phoenix for a few days, where we had a wonderful time. The Phoenix is a hotel of which we appreciated everything: the facility is very beautiful and elegant; the room very clean and large with a beautiful shower; breakfast is organized in a beautiful area of the facility, where you can find a lot of very good sweet and savory dishes (the pancakes are the best I have ever tasted); the staff is helpful and very courteous; I had the pleasure to dine in the facility and the quality of the food is excellent. Also we very much appreciated the cake we found in our room for our honeymoon!!! Super recommended hotel!!!

The hotel looks very impressive upon arrival, however, in our experience, this does not carry through to the bedrooms. We were expecting our room to be up to the standard of the public areas but upon entering the room we saw a very tired facility that was in desperate need of refurbishing of both the hard and soft furnishings. How disappointing! We were further disappointed upon looking out of the bedroom window. Our view was obstructed by rows of barbed wire stretching along the top of a wall. Looking beyond the barbed wire all that we could see was what looked like staff quarters, with a wide variety of laundry fluttering across all of the balconies. I would hazard a guess that we were not provided with the best room in the house! The bath towels were of a poor quality: thin, greying and threadbare. The quality of the towels was similar to those of the Accor hotel where we stayed in Jakarta. Is it the policy of Accor Indonesia to use towels until they fall apart? My experience would suggest that this is company policy. The food was good, with a wide variety of good quality items offered in the breakfast buffet, and was served by friendly and enthusiastic staff. This hotel is just crying out for refurbishment and further investment. At the moment it just screams faded grandeur, but not in a good way.

We are checking out tomorrow after staying 4 nights in the Phoenix suite on an Accor Gold upgrade, so I thought I would drop a line about our stay. This is a tremendous historic hotel, which I understand was designated a national historical landmark in 1996. What I loved about this hotel was that it brought the history, culture and even the cuisine of Jogja into the hotel. Our 46m2 suite, which was spacious and luxurious, was adorned with traditional wood carvings and artworks. The hallways were decorated with batik stamps and Borobudur-style rock carvings. Unless we are exhausted, we rarely eat at hotels. But I was so impressed by Phoenix's breakfast. And once we had visited the traditional markets and tried Jogja's specialties, I then understood what the hotel breakfast was all about. Alongside the western options, the hotel breakfast brought some the street food and home-cooking culture of Jogja to hotel guests. There was a fritter stall (reminiscent of the one we saw in Kota Gedes), stewed jackfruit, mie ayam, various sambal... there were actually too many to name and some of the options changed daily. When I was there, there was even a chicken liver sambal - they certainly weren't afraid to challenge the western pallet - which was delicious. Also, there were 4 types of Jogja herbal drinks (Jamu), which I had already tried at the markets. While some of the spice levels were dialled down a tiny bit, it was still spicy enough and I did work up a sweat. Service was lovely and attentive. This was our 1st time in Indonesia and we had just landed, so I don't have a reference point of what to expect of 5-star hotels and service levels. We are staying at the Mandarin Oriental in Jakarta next, so I guess we will found out. But if this is what a good 5-star hotel looks like in Indonesia, we have a good trip in front of us.
