Detailed Reviews
From our first enquiry, right through to the last day of our holiday, Mark and Debbie were excellent! Their organisation, attention to detail, knowledge of the area and kindness ensured that we had a wonderful cycling holiday.
The accommodation which they arranged for us was perfect, in a quiet street not far from the centre of Bourgueil. We could easily nip out for early morning croissants or to pick up supplies for our picnic lunches.
Every day Mark and Debbie provided us with a cycling route which was easy to follow and not too arduous. As a family of 6 (adults and teenagers), we were able to cycle 35-40km each day, as well as visit a chateau or stop for wine-tasting en route. Sometimes the routes were circular and on other days Mark dropped us off at a town and we cycled home. When we got back, Mark checked our bikes and pumped up tyres as necessary.
Totally recommended!

We are a pair of couples in our 60s. We wanted to see some of the chateaux and taste some of the good wines of the Loire. Mark and Debbie were very good at accommodating our wishes for both with extensive communication before the trip.
There was a bottle of wine waiting for us when we arrived, Mark and Debbie met us and stayed for a chat, explaining how flexible the arrangements could be. We agreed a start time for the next day.
Mark took us around in a hired van. He is a great talker (really, this is an understatement), so we always felt very well consulted; Mark was very keen to ensure that we were doing what we wanted. We tended to visit chateaux in the morning and tasted wines in the afternoons. Mark had recommendations for both, and also accommodated our suggestions.
Marks knows a great deal about the area, as he lives here. He also knows the wines well. We were left to our own devices and timescales in the chateaux, while Mark was on hand to guide us through the tastings.
Mark generally joined us for lunch, and made reservations for us for dinner.
We were booked into a Chambre d'hote for the first half of the week and a hotel for the second, both were pretty good.
Overall, we were very happy with our experiences over the week. I can heartily recommend Loire Valley Breaks for this kind of trip.

Lovely part of the world but we felt Mark and Debbie's sole reason was making money from the tourists they had staying ie referrals to local restaurants (who turned out to be their friends) were awful meals at quite high prices. Even a "home cooked" meal with the hosts was expensive at 20 euros a head for a pork stew and chocolate tart. Accommodation faces main home so no privacy and bathrooms have no window so very small and claustrophobic. We had thought that the high price of the guided tours for three days would include the chateaux entry but this was not so. There is no garden to sit in as we were led to believe, just a plastic table and chairs on a slab of concrete.
There was no fridge in the rooms which should be standard these days and you have to go to the communal kitchen to make an early morning cuppa - breakfast very ordinary.

We are disappointed to read this review - especially as you gave no indication of any issues during your stay which would have given us the opportunity to put them right. I won't comment on the opinions in the review but will correct the factual errors: The meal we served you was home cooked - the inverted commas are superfluous and incorrect. In addition to the main course and dessert you mention, your meal included pre-dinner aperitifs, a starter, cheese course, tea/coffee and unlimited wine during your meal. Our guest accommodation is in former stables behind our own house; at the one window which faces the guest rooms we have installed translucent film - to ensure privacy for both guests and ourselves. And of course all the guest bedrooms have curtains. Our website makes it clear what is and isn't included in our tours - the price of entry to chateaux is marked as not included. We do have a garden at the side of the property adjacent to our vineyard. In addition to the (admittedly plastic) tables and chairs on a block paved patio, under a shady pergola, there are also sun loungers on the grass, a splash pool and boules pitch in the garden. Guests don't need to leave their room to make a cuppa as each bedroom has tea and coffee making facilities. Finally we do have fans for guest rooms when these are needed; the thick walls in the 200 year old building plus the high levels of insulation we have installed make this thankfully rare.

Our family, including 2 girls aged 6 &8 & grandma stayed here in may 2011. It was absolutely idyllic for everyone. A beautiful, quiet & peaceful location in the middle of lush vineyards with ancient chateaux, gorgeous countryside, lovely restaurants & incredible wine everywhere. Mark was able to provide the perfect bike set-ups for aÂ
complete gamut of cycling expectations from a former ironman triathlete to a tiny 6 yr old princess (who graduated from a "carriage" to a tagalong) during the week. Â The kids loved Debbie & Mark's place with trampoline, swing, cats, dog & Debbie's cooking. Â We loved drinking the local wine on the terrace on sunlit evenings after a full days exploring. Â The mornings followed with breakfasts of fresh croissants & coffee while Debbie ran us through us through our customized itinerary for the day.

A friend and I spent several days in September at this glorious spot in the Loire Valley. It was my first visit, and I was amazed at the efforts and kindness shown by our hosts in making sure we had all the special experiences of this region, which included (in our case) several visits to chateaus, a number of walks through vineyards and along river banks, taking in a local farmers' market and being introduced to delectable cuisine of the near-by villages. I particularly valued the way they managed to offer choices neutrally, yet with pertinent information, even noting where better value on meals was to be found.
The couple are English but have vast local knowledge and a most contagious enthusiasm for the region. Certainly they went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we experienced everything we had hoped to find, and then some. They are really a model for this type of holiday.

You need to have a hire car when staying here so you are not obliged to go to local restaurants recommended by owners, as these are dreadful. The owners also strongly disapprove of you buying local food yourself to have as a picnic back at the accomm, which we thought was a bit severe! No fridge in rooms, which in temps of over 30C is not very good so you have to keep trotting over the noisy deep gravel to get to their kitchen. Bathrooms very small and no window - better accommodation in area we found out later. Not much privacy in rooms, ie no blinds, and it faces hosts' house.

As we stated in our reply to your sister’s review (below) we are disappointed that you didn’t feel able to raise these issues during your stay – which would have given us the opportunity to attempt to address them to improve your enjoyment. In particular it is frustrating to only learn now that you found the local restaurants dreadful; if you had let us know when we collected you after your first evening meal that you had not enjoyed it, we could have worked with you to try and find something you would enjoy for the following evenings. Incidentally the restaurants you visited are listed on Tripadvisor – both have an ‘excellent’ rating. It is entirely wrong to say that we disapprove of guests buying local food – we are strong supporters of the local economy which is why we usually visit local markets, vineyards and other producers on our Discovery tours. We also support local tourism by collecting – on behalf of the tourist office – a local tourist tax; you are the only guests who have ever declined to pay this. Regarding bringing food back to eat here, we do ask – on nights that we provide an evening meal – that out of courtesy to dining guests, others don’t bring food back then which could disturb the enjoyment of those dining in. It is interesting, bearing in mind your sister’s disappointment regarding our outside space, that you chose to have your picnic here in our garden, despite our offer to drive you to and from a choice of local picnic spots. Whist it is correct that we don’t have fridges in the guest bedrooms, they do have tea and coffee making facilities and bottled water. There is also a fridge exclusively for guests’ use in the communal sitting room (not our own kitchen) and guests are welcome to enjoy cold (or hot) drinks and snacks in this room or indeed in the garden where – particularly in hot temperatures – the pergola provides welcome shade. I have covered the privacy question in my previous reply; the choice to install curtains and not blinds at guest bedroom windows is an esthetical one. We make it clear on our website that guest accommodation is part of our home and we try to create a friendly, integrated environment where guests can relax together.

I feel I have to balance some of the rave reviews, as these are what spurred me to book this accommodation and we were hugely disappointed. We stayed in Printemps and there was no explanation on the website that the 2 rooms in this accommodation were above the communal dining/meeting area. We had no privacy as other guests could come in to the communal area whenever they wished (only one fridge was provided for all the guests and it was in this area) and it felt like we were staying in an extortionately priced youth hostel. Luckily we were only staying for 2 nights, any longer and we would have sought different accommodation. The whole stay was really poor value for money and I agree with another guest's comments that it felt to us that Mark and Debbie were looking to make as much money out of us as possible. We paid €600 (a discounted rate! And compare to €290 per night for us all to stay in a 5-star hotel in Tours) for 2 nights and 1 day's cycling; this included the hire of 3 bikes (a good standard) and some very basic info from Debbie - it was from other guests that we found out (too late!) about such options as the nearby lake swimming area. It left all of us wondering what exactly we had paid such a HUGE premium for. And the icing on the cake was the extortionate amount for the meal provided by our hosts. €90 for a family of five (only €1 less than what we paid for a hugely enjoyable family meal on the Champs Elysees!) and the meal was totally unsuitable for children (charcuterie but with cuts of meat for a refined palate), so our 3 kids and those of the family dining with us ate predominantly crisps (the so-called crudités!), bread, finished off with a cheap and nasty Super U choc-ice. Debbie seemed defensive rather than accommodating when I approached her to ask what my 8-year-old could eat (ham and Babybel, I was told). I would say that Mark and Debbie are, in our experience, punching above their weight - charging very high prices for basic amenities (with LOTS of rules!). I would never have booked this youth-hostel like accommodation if it had been made clear on the website. Don't be put off coming to the area for cycling, as it is beautiful (nearby Chinon, a medieval city, is lovely - recommended by friends, not Debbie and Mark!), but I would recommend finding other accommodation.

It is interesting to receive this review, as you took time to give me feedback when you left, because you ‘preferred to do that than write an anonymous review on Tripadvisor’. So I will follow your lead and respond to your comments above in this public forum . It would take too much server space to address all of your specific points, but in summary: It is true that we don’t mention on our website that the access to Printemps suite is via a private staircase from the communal guest sitting/dining room; the rooms in the suite all have doors and a metre thick wall - hence privacy has never been an issue for any previous guests. All returning guests who have stayed in this suite ask for that same suite for their next visit. Regarding the price you paid for your stay, we made sure that you were aware that the price included arrival from 4.00pm the first day – giving you time for a ride that afternoon/evening – two nights’ accommodation and breakfasts, bike hire and routes for the first afternoon and the following day and use of our on-site facilities . If you felt that was too expensive then you had a free choice not to stay with us. In terms of information we provided: in addition to the 13 e-mails I sent you before your stay, once you were here I discussed with you a choice of 3 routes for your days cycling, based on your stated wishes. I also gave you a local map with way-marked routes and local attractions (including the swimming lake) marked on it. In addition, before your arrival, I offered and then sent you details of places to stop off en route to us that first day. Regarding the evening meal you booked: I sent you details of the menu by e-mail in advance. We can’t know how refined our guests’ palates are and if you felt your sons would not enjoy this meal then of course you could have chosen to go out to dinner. The cost of evening meal was also advised in advance, a price which has not been increased since we started 7 years ago. The families who stayed with us the previous week to you – with similar-aged children – enjoyed the first evening meal so much, they all chose to eat in again the next time we served it. The family who shared the Sunday evening meal with you, made the specific comment that ‘the food was great’. It is true that we have safety rules in place for our guests and we make no apology for this. These relate mainly to splash pool and trampoline use as we want all guests to have a safe stay with us. For most guests this isn’t an issue as they realise that as well as being their holiday location, they are staying in our private home and they respect this. In fact most guests comment that the ‘rules’ are in fact just ‘common sense’ and find it hard to believe that any parents would have an issue with them. Since we started our business 7 years ago we have aimed to provide a welcoming place to stay in a family-friendly atmosphere where guests can enjoy each other’s company in comfortable, safe surroundings; in short the type of place we like to stay. We understand that, despite our efforts to convey this ambiance in both our website and detailed pre-stay e-mails and information, unfortunately occasionally guests won’t like what we offer. I am sorry that you were one such family.

We spent 6 nights in this lovely part of France in June 2011. We combined 3 days of guided touring with 3 days of cycling. Our guided touring took in chateaux, wine tasting and many beautiful little villages & towns around the area. Mark was a passionate & thoughtful guide and a good driver! For the cycling part of our trip we were provided with good bikes, maps, repair kits, etc - all very well organised & tailored to your needs. Our accommodation was in the Ete upstairs suite - very spacious, nicely decorated & very comfortable. Good breakfast - choice of juices, yoghurt, cereal, fresh fruit, bread, croissants, pastries & tea/coffee. Breakfast & the wonderul home cooked dinners are served in the communal dining room with the other guests. The dinners cooked by Debbie are excellent value at E20 pp for 3 - 4 courses & wine, very welcome after a long day's activities. Overall, the hosts, accommodation & facilites at Loire Valley Breaks are great - this is a must see region of France.

Loire Valley Breaks allows guests to enjoy the splendid sites, food and wine in perfect ease. Mark, our knowledgeable guide, inspired complete confidence in his planning for each day's activities. He has a gift for identifying and respecting the preferences of individuals and the group as a whole. The entire experience was a joy.

I agree with the above answer to contact Debbie and Mark. We biked for 5 days near the end of Sept. and we had great fall weather. We are in our 60s and rode about 40-50 km per day but that was our choice as you fill out a questionnaire before you arrive to let them know what you would like to see and how far you are comfortable riding each day. Area is mostly flat there. While we were there it was grape harvest season so that was most interesting!
