#3 of 12 hotels in Andros
No so long ago, the Bahamas were a destination for privateers, pirates and freebooters. The name Bahamas come from the Spanish expression, Baja Mar, which means low sea and if you have ever flown in a plane over Andros, where our lovely resort is located, you will understand why the name was given. Apart from the beautiful beaches, the ocean and the nature Bahamas still surprise each visitor, did you know that Alexander Selkirki, the real Robinson Crusoe, actually was in the Bahamas and survived on of our 700 islands till he was rescued 5 years later? Came On the island of South Andros Island, a small corner of paradise in the middle of the Caribbean, in the heart of lush tropical vegetation Imagine you are Robinson Crusoe...............a Luxury Adventure at Tiamo Resort Tiamo resort consists of ten exclusives houses. This is a beautiful place. The restaurant is outstanding as is the staff. Bugs are a MAJOR detraction. As a fishing destination wearing protective clothing at all times, there would be no problem. Bathing suits for the beach - not so much.

Tiamo greatly exceeded my very high expectations. Before we booked our trip, I read every TripAdvisor review before the trip, and I thought I knew what to expect. But it was even better for us, although Tiamo is not for everyone. If you’re looking for rest and ultimate relaxation, in a natural, slow-paced setting, you’ve found it. If you’re looking to make new friends at the bar, you’re scared or uneasy in the outdoors, keep looking. I will go through each aspect of the resort for easy reference. Bathroom- our cottage, #2, had an “Italian” style bathroom. You had to leave the bedroom and walk on the private, covered, screened porch to the open air bathroom. It was surrounded by a plethora of vegetation and it was very private, but the top of the shower was screen. We loved it. I never saw a bug in our bedroom or bathroom. The water pressure was STRONG, significantly exceeded my expectations. Hot water was plentiful. They do use well water and they have a filtration system, there is occasionally a sulfur smell based on the tide. It didn’t bother me at all. Bedroom- we stayed in cottage #2 and it was a quick walk, maybe 30-50 yards on the sand to the main area of the resort. It was SO much closer to the beach than I imagined. We walked out of our room, past our private pool, down the steps and we were 15-20 feet from the beach. It was amazing. Our bed was positioned so we could see the water. The king size bed was comfortable and a walk-in closet was provided. It is important to note that the rooms do not have locks on the doors. The entire resort remains unlocked at all times. It wasn’t an issue at all for us since there was only 1 other couple there for part of our stay then we were alone. And, it would be really hard to steal anything because there is only access to the island by boat. The staff mentioned that the entire island remains unlocked and they all said that crime was non-existent on the island. The rooms smell so fresh and everything is kept VERY clean. Housekeeping was provided each day and again with the turndown service. Connectivity- There is no TV at the resort but there was cell service that varied in strength and a good WiFi signal most of the time. The only people at the resort were the staff and another couple for part of the time. We were the ONLY ones there for our last 2 days. A number of guests were arriving on the day we left. Bugs- I was SO scared if our trip being ruined by sand flys and/or mosquitos. Bugs are always more attracted to me than others. I’m happy to report that on a scale of 1-100, I would give the bugs a distraction level of 6. We felt them the first morning we arrived, and the afternoon we left. They are worst at dawn and sunset. However, they supply Off (7% deet) and mineral oil. We used the oil and it seemed to work. We are from Arkansas, so we know mosquitos. In preparation, we packed a small bottle of 90% deet just in case, but we never used it. They have a number of measures in place to reduce their impact- garlic spray around the main area, mosquito repellent candle-like things, and fans mounted outdoors to repel the bugs. Of note- it was windy and mild during our trip which helped with the sand flys and mosquitos. They say they are worst when it is hot and the air is still. Food- wow...just wow on the food. Considering that the only way to get to the resort is by boat or plane, I could not get over how fresh, beautiful and delicious the food was. In fact, one night we asked if we could meet the chef. The kitchen was immaculate, and he was so friendly. Each morning we had amazing meals- 3 courses at lunch and dinner and breakfast was made to order. The fruit was plentiful and so fresh. The meals were all perfectly portioned and light, yet satisfying. I started taking photos of each meal because I could not get over how pretty they sat on the plate. They said they use as much local seafood as possible- conch, grouper, mahi mahi, lobster they call “crawfish”...it was all amazing. The chef is Bahamian but there are strong French influences in the cuisine. My husband and I are sensible eaters and the food could not have been more perfect. Dessert was always delicious but light. Many were fruit based. Good wine selection, plenty of good rum drinks available. Things to note- breakfast is served each day from 7-9am; lunch 12-1pm; dinner 7-9:30pm. If you miss it, I think you can order a snack but you don’t get the full meal. I’m usually a snacker, but I never even wanted a snack. At 9:30-10pm, the place shuts down- no late nights at the bar here. The Beach- beautiful, like breathtakingly beautiful, uncrowded, each cottage has their own lounger with a service button, and the water is exceptionally shallow all around. See photo to see how close each cottage is to the water. They own 4 miles of beach. We walked as far and we could most days and the only footprints were ours. The pool- we jumped in our private pool once just to say we did, but the water was cold and we aren’t big pool people. I used the resort pool on the last day and it looks exactly like the photos online. Photo of our private pool in this review. The Spa- they have a small spa on the grounds and they offer massages, facials, and nail services, maybe other services too. My husband and I each had a massage and I also had a facial. The spa is in a separate small building and it has everything necessary for a spa, but it’s nothing fancy. The therapist did a good job and she’s very accommodating to your schedule. The Service- over the top in every way. They all knew us by name and we knew them by name and schedule. They remembered our drink orders from day to day, asked about our fishing and tended to our every need without being fussy. Friendly and accommodating- I highly recommend! Bonefishing- we fished 3 half days with a guide, Marvin. He was great and the water we fished in was so beautiful. I’d recommend fishing while days instead of half days based on the tide. Getting there- we flew into Nassau and took a Western Air flight to Congo Town. Tiamo arranged for Ms. Shirley to pick us up from the airport. The taxi was unmarked but since it’s such a small flight coming into a small town she knew exactly who we were and had the information to confirm. Shirley took us to the harbor to be picked up by a boat to Tiamo. The boat ride was about 5-7 minutes in a nice, covered boat. You do have to go down a ladder to get into the boat, but it was very nice. Wilfred met us on the dock when we arrived and we started our stay with a wonderful breakfast. Getting home was the same way- we had a 7:45am Western Air flight; we left Tiamo at 5:45am by boat, taxi to the airport and arrived in Nassau. It sounds much harder than it actually was. Misc tips: Ladies, leave your heels at home. You have to walk in the sand to get anywhere on the property and I don’t think you could do that in heels. We took headlamps and enjoyed using them in the beach at night to walk to dinner (although the path is lit) and to watch the fish in the water around the deck. There is a ton of fish around the dock, including small sharks and large starfish. We took cash for tips, but we didn’t have enough small bills. Since there wasn’t change available, they also let us write in tip amounts on the checkout paperwork. We’re looking for a time to return! It was an amazing anniversary trip!

The sand flies are enough to not ever return. They only bit my wife and daughters and appear to strictly bother women and leave the men alone. The resort for 4 people cost me over $20k and is not worth it. Watercraft and marine equipment does not get serviced or taken care of. The owner ignores basic items - great example - a water taxi picks up at 5:30am to shuttle residents back to the mainland for the 7am flight to Nassau. There is no light at the dock. the general manager doesn't have a flashlight. it was very unsafe when we left. 30mph winds and a wet dock in the dark - stupid. 5 days after we left Andros island, my wife still has bug bites and needs to see a dermatologist today. I went to Andros for fishing and could have stayed in similar accommodations on the island for 1/5 the price.

Dear Mc260nyd, Unfortunately, nothing Kill the Sandflies, this insect love sun rise and sun set during warm weather, love humidity without wind-breeze. On property, we try this season new system with CO2, Completely naturel, CO2, is the attractive element for these insects, which the human body releases naturally, but for add this sytème everywhere we test for 6 months.we are the only establishment in the Bahamas to try this system Is you travel in Pacific, French Polynesia, Fidji, and other islands you have same trouble and each person is different regarding reactions. You talk about our Price, you paid not only night stay but all included -Full Board (meal plan) -all soft drinks, -airport transfer, - WIFI, -Taxes and Fees About marine Equipment, we have 2 brand new glass kayaks, 4 Sea Kayaks, 4 stand up paddle boards , love off snorkel equipment. Concerning Departure: You choice to fly with Western Air, you need to read all information especially C/IN policies on your flight confirmation, you need to be at the Airport TWO hours before, we organize everything to be sure no one miss flight with Western Air. I , Wilfried, General Manager, I'm not stupid, I Escorte your family to our dock, I have light, dock, and our dock are safe and no one complain last ten years up-today. as said and written by many customers : Tiamo Resort is not for everyone, need to understand and realize where we are .

In June 2018 we as a family (2 adults, 3 children) spent 10 days holiday at the Tiamo resort. The cost was of around $3,700 / night. We had booked a villa with a pool and 3 bedrooms. The resort was a big disappointment. In retrospect I have to say that all negative comments on Tripadvisor are unfortunately more than true. There is basically nothing positive to say about the resort. The high price suggested an eco-luxury holiday stay. We all see this as fraud. Here, shortly summarized our personal impressions: 1. The 3 bedroom villa was in very poor conditions. Everything smells rotten. There is mold everywhere. The doors are warped and leaky. Every evening we had lots of mosquitoes in the bedroom. 2. The water for shower and toilets are not purified. It stinks a lot of sulfur. 3. The diving school was closed for the first 5 days of our 10 days holiday, because there was no instructor available (we were told he is on holidays). 4. The resort is very remote. You can only go swimming, dive or go to the gym. All equipment in the gym was extremely rusty and mostly not functional. 5. The diving center equipment was in catastrophic condition. We went diving only once. 6. The food is not tasty at all. Not worthy of the hotel price. I would say there is no chef in the kitchen, just a helper. The breakfast offer was very limited. After 3 days the dishes from dinner were repeated. The hotel was not offering ice cream because the deep freezer was not working. 7. At the beach / pier lives 7 lemon sharks. Not very small once. My kids didn't want to go swimming again after they saw the sharks circling around them just a few feet far away. According to the hotel manager they are not dangerous. 8. And yes, the sand flies are a serious problem. Not only on the beach, but especially in the evenings during dinner. All of us were completely full of red dots by the sand flies on the end of our vacation. Why am I writing the report now and not earlier? In fact we were so disappointed that we thought it is not worth the effort. I have never written such a critical report before. Not even about hotels that deserved a little criticism. But in this case it is probably necessary to warn potential future guest. I'm sorry, but this is what we have experienced.

Dear Frvnky, I m Surprised you send Comment more than One year after your stay, but All Comments are positive. Just before your Comment on this site, One Family and Friend Buy-out(Rent Entire resort) just before Christmas 2019( sorry it's in French but TripAdv translate all for you), and they enjoyed the entire stay and accommodation-food and services but I write answer in all point, true it's important to know where you go in vacations during our yearly closing season 2018 during two months, all September and October, we have renovated the entire Villa BIRD'S NEST and this year 2019, we are Lucky, for Andros Island, the Hurricane Dorian do not touch our Area in The Archipelagos of The Bahamas, we have renovated all other accommodations : COOL villas - POOL villas- STAR LIGHT Villa and FULL MOON Villa - my team still work on it Up to End Of April 2020.... we finish paint outside floor(patios) change all shower( all Chrome be destroy with humidity and salt atmosphere ) Concerning the Water, we find a Eco System to Reduce Small of our Natural Water, but yes still smell especially hight Tide , don't forget if you travel in Island was same problem .... About dive Center, I'm sorry, yes dive instructor take 4 days Off and for Personel reason he be back on days late, I have no excuse but it's normal when one of my team have medical reason or personal reason, he travel out of island, I'm a human person, on property, our Dive Instructor work for 4 months without days off, and Second dive instructor work for the second part of season also 4 months without days Off. I'm so sorry again your have no diver during your stay, again was not under my control and very exceptional. About Food, That 's a big surprise for me and Head Chef, our Chef Organize Menu for Lunch and Diner a he organize all for make sure you never eat the same for your entire stay, WHY YOU TEL ME NOTHING ON SITE, I'm 7/7-24/24 on property ? Shark.... what you need ?? you came in The Bahamas, very famous around the for the Sharks, you are scuba diver ??? you just complain no instructor on property... that's mind no dive with sharks ??? so no dive in The Bahamas ..not clear for me but ,Yes, it's True we have lot of sharks and More that 7 you don't see all from, but NO FEEDING, NO HUMAN ACTION, never play with Lion It's the same with the Shark, Also Andros Island, The WEST SIDE, are the Biggest Natural Park for All The Caribbean' Islands, the biggest nursery for Turtle, shark, dauphin, pink flamingo, famous world capital for Bone-Fishing(fly fishing in salt water) one time one guest would like I KEEL our Shark ... I say :" sorry Dog in City are more dangerous to compare to our local underwater live. About Sandflies - yes we have in All The Bahamas, this animal hate pollution, and nothing kill this animal ... but this year from November 1 2019, we ry on property, new system, with CO2, this is what your body releases and attracts the animal, it's also completely natural, and catch those animals ... couple repeat guests realize difference and more confortable... and completely ECO... so if end of this season I realize and have positive guest' feed-backs, we add this system In all guest' Accommodation in Mai 2020. but when you have No Breeze - it's Hot Humide, the population of the sandflies are so big to compare size of the reason on the island that's the reason we suggest long pan and shirt during the sunset time because Sandflies came during the sunset for "diner"and lay eggs in the sand I'm sorry you say nothing during your stay, on site I always find solution but after more than one year, I invite you to came back and see the difference . Kindest regards
