Booked to attend a training course. One of our party needed to change rooms as it was so awful. Ceiling in my own room was falling down! Food on the first brightness awful. Curry tasted like vinegar, salmon under cooked, waffle smelt like fish and custard was runny and lumpy! To be fair the food on the second night wax... More

I found this place great value for money. Yes it's a bit retro and yes it's in the middle of some rowdy local pubs but it's clean, friendly and inexpensive. The town is certainly lively but if you want quiet then Merthyr is not the place. Food was exactly what we expected and breakfast was £5...all in all I'd say... More

Great location, staff were really helpful and friendly. The place probably had a fortune spent on it about 25 years ago, and not much since, but it's been well looked after and the room was spotless. Niggles were that the quarterlights were too high up to reach to close, half the blinds were missing - there wee curtains though (why... More

Heating on boiling so was sweating all day there and no power in the shower amd was scolding hot or freezing and useless staff when I had car trouble and none of them could even use or hand over the local yellow pages, no parking either so you have to pay and walk to the hotel

Went to stay here while hiking, odd place, no car park which is the first thing that may put you off and you have to park in the multi storey opposite, rooms clean and functional, nothing like the pictures but adequate, the food is ok, but just ok it's a lot of pre packed pre cooked fast served, the staff... Please see below the email we have sent to the Manager 28/5/16:- FAO The Manager We have just returned from a two night stay (27 and 28 May) at your hotel, under the name of Sheppard. As you know, my husband complained about the level of noise on Friday night, which as you explained, you can do little about. However,... More

The Castle Hotel is incredibly dated. Everything about it is a throwback to the 1970s but it's comfortable and importantly, the staff are friendly. The wifi is hit and miss but unlike a lot of places it's actually free! There was a bit of shouting and fighting outside but hey, it's Merthyr Tydfil on a weekend!

Stayed here with two others for one night stopover. Basic accommodation but understaffed, only one person doing everything. This continued to the next morning with night porter cooking breakfast and check it etc... No parking so you have to use the local multi-storey. Sorry but would it stay again. The staff were very friendly but needed help.

Things we did like: - breakfast - location - Sunday carvery - comfy bed - friendly staff Things we didn't like: - decor (old and tired) - mould (especially bathroom) - stains on the walls - broken furnitures - kinda vintage hair dryer - filthy windows
