The Fred hotel boasts a prime location with beachfront access that is perfect for sunset watching and sports enthusiasts. However, guests have called out concerns with room cleanliness, maintenance, and booking accuracy, which, along with high prices and service inconsistencies, has led to dissatisfaction about overall value. While the hotel's daily music and bar scene contribute to a lively atmosphere, this may not be ideal for those seeking tranquility.
Amenities like the pool are a hit, though service issues persist. Cleanliness receives mixed reviews, with specific praise for the bar area.

We bought a day pass online while visiting St. Croix after our shore excursion was cancelled last minute. It turned out to be way more fun than the shore excursion we originally planned. Very reasonable price. Clean and close to the pier. Good beach. Good restaurant and bar. Lively pool scene. Highly recommend.

We stayed at the Fred for a long Valentine’s Weekend. We were in the Douglas House, and had an amazing view of the ocean from our balcony area. Our room was small but clean and cozy, with a spacious, modern bathroom. We had read about the Fred for quite some time, and it definitely met our expectations!
The property itself has a contemporary and charming vibe. The pool (props to the carved-out crown), hot tub, and bar are all very new and a great addition. The Fred it located directly on the beach, and you can easily take a dip in the gorgeous water or layout on the loungers to admire the beautiful sunsets.
It is an intimate property and we got to know the staff, who were all super helpful. While there is not currently a restaurant on site, within 2-10 minutes we were able to walk to multiple restaurants and try the local fare. We found the location to be super convenient for walking into town, and it is only 20-25 minutes to the airport.
The Fred is a small boutique hotel that exudes a modern, Caribbean vibe the moment you walk onto its grounds. If you are looking to explore Frederiksted, we absolutely recommend a stop or #sleepwithFred.

Good Afternoon wimi7985: HOORAY!! You just made our day! What a lovely review, we really appreciate it. We're working super hard on opening our new restaurant and once that happens the bar will be open 7 days/week as well. We should have some significant headway to announce in the coming weeks so please stay tuned and once the restaurant is open we'd love to invite you back so you can check out the final touches. -Topher

It was a nice room with friendly and attentive staff. Complimentary champagne when entered with a cool rag while waiting on room to be prepared. Be prepared though to luge your own luggage up and down a few sets of stairs. Luckily we are local and only had 2 carry on bags. Very clean and great pool and lounge area. Attentitive and friendly bar staff as well. Housekeeping was amazing
My wife went to the spa and had a facial and the vagacial. The service was fantastic and friendly
The issues
Parking, cars park on sidewalk walking up to resort. Have to walk in oncoming traffic to get in.
While the room we booked had an ocean view you can't enjoy it privately. People have access and have to walk by your windows to get to their rooms or enjoy lounge area. No live TV channels, have to use own Netflix and Hulu accounts. No way to call front desk. No coffee maker in rooms, stand up shower only. At 8 am we are woken up each day by the kitchen directly below us (would ask for a different section if booking and want to sleep in). The showers have full bottles of body wash, shampoo, and conditioner locked on wall but pump don't work.
The restaurant was so so. Would rate that a low 3. Disapointed our drink order took close to a half hour because of a supposedly big bar order took priority over restaurant tables. Fantastic mussels. Supposedly the Brussel sprouts are famous but mine was charcoaled burnt. I ordered the duck and i did not care for it my wife had a local fish that was below average from what she has had at other local restaurant's. Mac and cheese was average as well. The service however was fantastic. The waitress let us know about the bar issue twice making sure we knew she was attentive and acknowledge the delay. Very friendly and attentive (I say that a lot because the staff really is) .

From the first moment I arrived at The Fred I felt like I was being pampered. The check-in process was a treat after almost 25 hours of travel when they gave me an ice cold washcloth, which I loved, as well as not having to carry my luggage up to my room. Two free drink coupons even came with my stay!
The room was air conditioned and very clean, well decorated with modern and trendy design elements, and the housekeeping staff did an excellent job during my 6 day stay. The room had a gorgeous tiled walk-in shower, and the most comfortable mattress I’ve ever slept on. I’m going to ask for the brand and model so I can buy one when I get home!
My morning routine was to head down to the restaurant for good food and complimentary coffee, then either go snorkeling or relax in the pool. I cannot stress how amazing the amenities are at this property. Imagine the most gorgeous, pristine pool and hot tub, tons of comfortable seating for lounging/sunbathing, super clean restrooms (why do so many other places skimp on the restrooms?), great music, great food, hip neon lighting at night, and super friendly staff like Shawn, Shenell, Todd, and Sam.
Shawn was always the first to greet me and ask how yesterday’s adventures were. You can tell he takes pride in his home and genuinely want to make sure visitors see the magic of the Caribbean too. Shenell was always there at the front desk wishing me good night with her kind and caring smile when I returned from an evening out on the town. As a solo traveler, it is sometimes the simple things like this that make you feel special. Todd is a polite and professional gentleman with a great sense of humor and Sam shared with me a little bit of island history when I showed him some cool old sea glass and pottery I found out in the ocean. There was also a very happy and friendly young man cleaning the floors who I later found out was hired through a job training program for autistic adults. Knowing that I’m supporting a business that gives back to the community makes me love The Fred even more!
I’ve been looking forward to this trip for about 8 months and mostly it was the image of relaxing in the sun, eating good food and drinking SO MANY drinks that got me through the winter months until it was finally time to go on vacation. The food and beverage service team were attentive, fast, and friendly. Every meal I had was wonderful and I’m really going to miss Karen and Brittney bringing me all the delicious cocktails.
Everything about my stay here at The Fred was about relaxation and quality. Thanks for the memories and I miss you already Fred!

My wife and I had a dinner reservation at The Fred on Mother’s Day. The manager called us that day around 5 to let us know that unfortunately our reservation would need to be cancelled. There was an issue in the kitchen so we were still welcome to come for drinks but no food could be served. We understood, things happen, and he said that he would make sure he could seat us another night if we wanted. We took him up on that and went there for dinner the next night. The ambiance of the place is very nice, having a wonderful view and great sounds of the water washing up on shore. Our table was close to the open kitchen which is fine if you want to showcase the chefs making meals but our view was just a bunch of trash cans. Our waitress was very friendly and although she had no idea of the beer and wine options did offer us margaritas before getting the bartender to let us know the choices as only mixed drinks were on the menu. After we received our drinks, we ordered our meals. Perhaps our waitress was new but she really didn’t have a very good grasp of the menu and couldn’t answer basic questions about the preparation of the meals. We ordered a ceviche sampler for an appetizer but they were out of all but the snapper choice so we went with that. I ordered blackened yellowfin tuna with brussels sprouts and asparagus as my sides. My wife had the blackened mahi-mahi over coconut risotto. Then we didn’t see our waitress for 45 minutes until she came over to let us know that our food would be out soon. There were only three other tables occupied so I’m not sure what took so long. About 15 minutes later we received our entrees but no ceviche appetizer. Then I realized that my fish was salmon and not tuna. I started eating it because I was really hungry and it tasted great! My wife liked her fish but the risotto leaked a pool of butter on her plate and was so-so tasting. My sides were also good. Upon hearing of the mistake the waitress apologized saying I forgot which fish but knew it was the $30 one. The salmon was $34🤦♂️. The manager offered to remake the dish but I declined due to the good taste of the salmon and not wanting to wait another hour for a new dish. After finishing our meals we were debating on dessert but it took so long for our waitress to come back and she didn’t ask so we just got the check. We promptly gave a credit card but then it took another 10-15 minutes for her to run it so we could leave. We were very disappointed with the overall experience!

My husband and I stayed at The Fred for six days over Christmas 2021. It was our first time on St. Croix, but had visited the other two VIs. While we loved the size and feel of the hotel, the service and food was pretty much terrible. Beware if you are interested in a good hotel with good service. You won't get that here.
We arrived the evening of the 22nd and had dinner at the restaurant. The food was good initially and service at our table was just ok. The bar staff was rude, however, and most of the workers looked miserable and acted similarly. Just a downer of a vibe. The subsequent days did not get much better. Staff mostly stood around, did minimal cleaning of the grounds, let you stand there waiting to ask for service (while they knew you were standing there waiting), and pretty much acted annoyed or just plain rude that you needed anything.
The meals during the day were horrible and they got worse at dinner every evening. We waited 2 hours for a salad one night at dinner that ended up being gross. Eventually we stopped eating at The Fred and went elsewhere for food. And don't plan on eating breakfast there; their grab and go counter consisted of multi-days old fruit and wrapped breads that were never changed out the entire time we were there, and nobody was at the counter in the morning ever anyway to help you even if you did want something.
As for the hotel itself and others, the front desk staff was much better than at the restaurant (which was basically run by non-existent management and people who sat around until they had to assist a customer). Our rooms were cleaned nicely each day, although the coffee items were never restocked. Also the hot tub didn't work for two of the days, and I had to inquire about five times over two days because they kept saying it would be fixed but then it wasn't until the third day.
The hotel grounds were really only cleaned by one maintenance guy each morning but never attended to throughout the day. By the end of the night, there were cups and sticky spilled drinks everywhere, the tile around the pool and walkways was dirty and gross, and there was never any poolside or ocean side service (you had to walk to the bar and talk to the miserable bartenders who ignored you until you yelled over to them that you wanted a beverage). Additionally, one day as we were laying by the pool, a kid was taking out the trash from the restaurant and one of the garbage bags was leaking lots of liquid filth that trailed all the way from the bar to the front and the staff just left it on the tile even after I mentioned that it had leaked everywhere. They didn't care in the least that patrons were walking barefoot in the nasty liquid. It never cleaned up btw.
It is such a shame that this hotel is so poorly staffed. It is beautiful and could be so much better. We were talking to some locals who mentioned that the hotel is under new ownership and that's why it is so terrible (I was told it used to be amazing to stay there).

Don’t expect any acknowledgement of honeymoons or other special occasions. The water in our room wasn’t potable even though the staff didn’t note it at check-in (it was yellow/smelled), we didn’t have hot water for several days of the stay, there were significant issues with food service and a recently changed menu of substantially lower quality, at one point we had to climb out of our balcony because the doorknob didn’t function correctly, and the TV also didn’t function properly. All of this and other ongoing construction and renovation issues would have been fine if we had been warned of ongoing work being completed with some sort of price adjustment, but we were not. The view and beach access are beautiful as well as the pool and jacuzzi space, but significant portions of the hotel were not set up for normal operations. We made the best of it and had a nice time, but our stay was a real disappointment given the fact that it was a special occasion and given the price. Hopefully things improve post-COVID because the location has a lot of potential to be a nice place to stay and it’s clear the tourism industry there has been hit hard, but we were not satisfied this time around.

Thank you for visiting the Fred and for your view! We are glad you liked the location, cleanliness, and sleep quality! We are sorry for the problems you encountered regarding the renovation issues. Many resorts and restaurants use the off-season as the time to make improvements and we are doing more than normal! We have invested heavily in more staff, new equipment, enhanced menu, new furniture, etc. Those improvements should be complete this week. We are sorry for any problems you encountered. We are confident that the changes we are making will lead to an even better experience for our guests.

Very nice guest room with comfy bed (The Rachel in the Love Shack). Service at the restaurant and around the pool was sometimes good and sometimes very very slow. My biggest compliant was how dirty the main pool and the upstairs pool with the lounge chairs. We asked several times when it was going to be cleaned and finally on Thursday (arrived prior Saturday) someone did scrub the sides and seat areas and pushed all the dirt to the center of the pool (sand, algae, etc.) but never vacuumed it out of the pool so it just ended up getting all dispursed around the pool again as soon as someone got it in. VACUUM the pool to clean it! That would actually work. And the restaurant didn't open until 8am and closed at 8pm. We were diving so we didn't have a place to get breakfast or coffee in the morning. It would have been nice to be able to order food after 8pm too - twice we had to find another place to eat and that was frustrating. Other than that, the grounds were nice and our stay was pleasant. I would return - but please clean your pools!!

We stayed M-F in mid March for our mini-moon. COVID precautions are great, no worries there. The property is really nice, and our room was great. Great to be on the water, even though the beach and shore is very rocky. The sunsets are awesome. Very nice to have a restaurant on-site. Overall the food is good. Breakfast is pretty heavy with no lighter options. Lunch and dinner were usually good, a few items weren't very good but no major complaints. All the drinks are great.
The main issue we had was with some of the staff, particular the bartender Karen. Two separate occasions my wife and I stood at the bar waiting to order a drink and she blatantly ignored us even though no one else was there and the restaurant was mostly empty. We waited 10 minutes or more each time to say anything...we're not in a rush on vacation, trying to be patient but come on. One time it took another waitress saying "you have a customer" for her to actually take our order. Two other wait staff at meals seemed to act like we were a burden. Considering how expensive everything is, how much the nightly room rate is...it shouldn't be too much to ask to get even average service. I'll say the breakfast bartender was great and another bartender was very helpful, but the few bad apples brings the overall service to below average.
Our shower would occasionally stop flow completely for 5 seconds or so. Not a huge deal so we didn't notify the hotel, but not something that should happen when you're paying over $400 per night.
The rooms are somewhat open air, so when people don't follow quiet hours, they don't block the noise well. One night a large group was wasted, partying, yelling & jumping in the pools well after midnight but there was no one at the hotel that did anything to enforce quiet hours.
Overall, the Fred is a decent place to stay with some definite benefits but some glaring issues that don't support paying over $400 a night. The value is not there. I would recommend looking elsewhere first, but hopefully the Fred can improve the issues as they're mostly easy to fix.

I usually only write reviews when I'm absolutely thrilled with a place. Let me start by saying that the room was nice and the bed was extremely comfortable. Besides that, not a place I'd ever recommend.
Pretty disappointed after spending over $450 per night. We expected great service now that people are finally starting to travel again but this doesn't seem to be a priority at The Fred. We had better service when we went to dinner at the Sand Castle Hotel.
1. The pool is absolutely disgusting (a deep shade of green algae on the entire pool). We were there two days before anyone came to clean it (and not very well) and then it was full of algae again within a day. Not once was it inviting.
2. They make a big deal about wearing your wristband but on more that one occasion there were more non-guests. There is a group of men who are apparently long time guests who are working for AT&T (or something like that we were told) and they sat at the bar for hours along with what seemed like "working girls" (the groping going on was very strange) while and after one of the men ran down to the beach to throw up. Mind you, this was in the middle of the day and was pretty much the same every day.
3. If you like to get up early (and by early I mean before 8am) forget about being able to get coffee (or anything else). The lobby puts out a Keurig only on weekends which is really strange, then they finally put coffee out by the pool area after that. Why not put a coffee maker in the rooms or at least make one available to guests who request it?
For the price of the room, I would never recommend this place to anyone.
