We should have heeded some of the more negative reviews, but chose to chalk those up to negative Nellies. Perhaps if we had listened our expectations would have been more realistic. Extremely overpriced. We booked a deluxe beachfront room and assumed the room would have ocean views as represented in the website pictures & video. For $527/nt + $74 daily tax + 65.50 daily energy surcharge it was not worth it. Room: spacious, clean but in disrepair for what you’re paying. See pics. Rusted tub, weeds growing, scuffed up walls, cracked tiles. I understand covid has hit everyone extremely hard, but prices should be adjusted until resort meets standards that match prices. Cleaning staff very personable Food: we love seafood & assumed on an island we would be eating it daily. Wrong. Ceviché- out. Shrimp- out. Daily fish selection consisted of salmon & mahi only. Daily breakfast buffet did turn out to be unexpectedly included, though none of our servers mentioned we had the option to order off a separate breakfast menu until the morning of our departure. Food unremarkable overall. Amenities/beaches: beaches clean and pretty. Loungers, towels, snorkel gear, noodles, kayaks included. Pool relatively small overall, no hot tub. No spa services onsite at present, must arrange via front desk. Golf course 5/10. Resort: staff generally pleasant & helpful. Service can be slow at times, but that is not unusual for the islands. Resort spread out so must be able to walk up steep hills to lobby or Terrace dining for breakfast. Roads and landscaping in obvious decline. I know I sound like a whining prima-donna but when a resort is promoted to be 5 star, I expect something close to 5 star. Disappointed overall.

My partner and I stayed at The Buccaneer in Christiansted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, from July 5 to July 12, 2021. For our first pandemic escape from New York City, we were looking for a tropical destination within the United States. The Buccaneer and St. Croix provided the perfect solution. The Buccaneer is located on 314 acres of prime oceanfront property. The resort was a former sugar plantation; much of the grounds are now a golf course. There are also three beaches on the property. One beach, the Grotto, has the best onsite snorkeling (apart from Club Med Cancun) that we have found. The reef on the Grotto beach runs parallel to the shoreline; you can snorkel to your heart’s content on this beach without ever leaving the property. The main building complex, painted pink, sits high atop a hill that has a sweeping 360 degree view of the island. St. Croix is a beautiful tropical paradise, as you can see from this vantage point. Successive rolling hills, sparkling blue Caribbean water, and palm trees beckon. We had reserved a Luxury Ocean View room in the main building. Our travel agent, Amy McHugh of Dream Makers Vacation Services, got us an upgrade to a Deluxe Ocean Front Room closer to the Grotto beach. (Thanks, Amy. You are the best!) The Ocean Front Room was spacious, with sloping wood-beamed ceilings in the main room and in the large bathroom. The comfortable king bed was a welcome perk, as was the private patio outside the room overlooking the beach and golf course. The Buccaneer is not an all-inclusive resort. Your room cost includes a complimentary breakfast buffet, which is very good. Due to Covid, food servers prepare your plate at the buffet. As a result, there is usually a slow-moving line to get food. Be sure to ask your tableside waiter/waitress for a made-to-order omelet; they are delicious, as is the freshly ground coffee. For lunch and dinner, you are on your own, that is, you can eat in the two resort restaurants at your own expense. And expensive it will be. The Mermaid and Beauregard’s on the Beach offer tasty food, cocktails, and draft beer (try the local Leatherback IPA—amazing!), but the fare is New York City pricy. The service is uniformly slow. Snail’s pace slow. Watching paint dry slow. As a vegetarian, I had several delicious salads for lunch. The one night we ate dinner at the resort, the chef at the Mermaid made me a wonderful grilled vegetable dish. My complaint is not with the food. My complaint is with the price tag and the slow service. At this price point, the service should be faster. Isn’t this a relatively simple fix? My partner and I love to snorkel. The Buccaneer allowed us to snorkel as often as we liked because of the Grotto beach reef. This was a huge plus for us. We’d read about taking a snorkeling excursion to Buck Island. We researched the trip on our own; there was no excursion information available at the resort, which is an odd oversight. In fact, the resort offered no orientation about the services available onsite or off. (This omission could be easily addressed.) On the day of our excursion, the box lunch we ordered was delayed. The concierge (sorry, I don’t remember her name) was helpful in rectifying the situation. She was cordial whenever we asked for assistance, and she offered us rum punch, always a good idea. Thanks and kudos. In any event, we booked a sailing expedition to snorkel off of Buck Island and then swim on the island’s beach ($85.00 per person). The boat captain, Heinz, was an amusing guide. The snorkel tour along an underwater trail is spectacular. (Note that you must be a strong ocean swimmer to enjoy this tour.) The time we spent on Buck Island’s beach was magical. Powdery white sand and crystal-clear aquamarine water made for a fantasy beach experience. We wanted more time snorkeling and on the beach. I guess we’ll have to return… The Buccaneer is located a few miles outside of Christiansted. It’s a ten-minute taxi ride ($15.00 each way—New York City prices). The hotel will arrange for a taxi to pick you up at your room. The island is sleepy; stores in town are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Restaurants serve their last meals around 8:30 p.m. If you don’t arrange a taxi back to the resort by 9:30 p.m., you could get stranded. Christiansted is a beautiful town, full of covered portico sidewalks and yellow Danish municipal buildings, including an imposing fort at the water’s edge. It’s worth pulling yourself away from the beach to stroll around when the shops are open. (Check out Baci Duty Free for good prices on Cruzan rum.) We also found some excellent restaurants in town: Luncheria, a funky, reasonably priced Mexican place; Too Chez, an elegant bistro with wonderful food and drinks; and The Bombay Club, which has, hands down, the best food in town. Reservations at the last two places are strongly recommended. The best Happy Hour we found was at Nate’s Boathouse on the wharf. Try the Ginger Beerita (gold tequila and ginger beer) and the Pina Colada with Blue Curacao. You won’t regret it. So the question is—would we return to The Buccaneer? If we do, we would consider renting a car (they drive on the left on St. Croix) in order to shop at a grocery store for room essentials (beer, water, sunblock, etc.) The resort has two gift shops with limited supplies (but cool Hawaiian shirts). A car would also give us the freedom to visit Christiansted whenever we wanted, even past the 9:30 p.m. “curfew.” The answer is—absolutely! We loved the resort, the accommodations, the food and drinks, and the beaches. It’s always the beaches that get you. We hope to be checking in again in 2022. Who wants to join us?

Our room had an incredible view. Also, there is an entryway with a couch and TV that leads to the bedroom. There is a door in case others are watching TV in the bedroom. The floors were solid wood and the mattresses were extremely comfortable. Air Conditioning was a must and worked very well. The bathroom was well laid out. Sometimes the hot water got too hot but nothing to worry about. Also, it was close to needing to be caulked again. Room service is something you have to use if you want to eat between 3 and 5. No restaurants are open during those hours. Also, be prepared to have cash handy for rides into town. super nice drivers but they don't take credit cards. Breakfast was fabulous and well thought out considering the pandemic. Also, the dinners were well prepared. There is also staff to help plan out your days if you're looking for adventure. They were fabulous.

The 3 beaches were amazing, some of the best on the island. We loved walking to Whistle Beach, we had the whole beach to ourselves. The snorkeling at Grotto Beach and Mermaid Beach was better than some of the other beaches we went to in Fredrickstead. I really enjoyed the view of Grotto Beach from our room and the convenience of our room's location. The breakfast buffet was great, we enjoyed it everyday, Delma and Pat were great servers. The service at Beauregards Bar was great from Ken the bartender. And we enjoyed going to get drinks from Patrice at the Terrace Bar at night. The overall vibe of the resort was peaceful and quiet, perfect for what we were looking for. The pillows on the bed were very thin and uncomfortable and our toilet leaked onto the floor the first few days. The food at the restaurants (Beauregards and Mermaid) was very overpriced and took forever, I recommend eating elsewhere on the island. Everything at the hotel closes too early, the restaurants stop serving at 8 and the live music on the Terrace was over by 9pm every night.

Bought my family to the buccaneers for a much needed staycation! From the time we got there our services were expectation! The adjourning rooms was cleaned and spacious, Ms Diana went above and beyond to make us feel welcome! Most importantly the Bell Man Kenrick services personally smile and Willingness to help top the cake! My family really enjoyed their stay! This property is a most stay at again on my list!
