Sugar Reef's French House is a fantastic 5-bedroom villa with its origins dating back to the 18th Century. Accessed by a private driveway, this villa can be found nestled on the hillside of a 65 acre coconut plantation estate that stretches all along Industry Bay, Crescent Beach.. With no direct neighbors and a great panoramic view out to the ocean and the Grenadine Islands of Balliceaux, Battowia and Mustique, guests can enjoy total seclusion and undisturbed privacy. The French House's eco-friendly design has made use of local materials, including lots of stone and mahogany. Its massive stone walls, large French doors and windows, and pitched roof were designed so as to ensure that the interiors are kept cool at all times, whilst also allowing cooling trade winds to enter from the east. The property features a saline plunge pool, a deep wraparound veranda facing the ocean with spectacular views, an honor bar, a fully equipped spacious kitchen and a great room with books and games, all for the exclusive use of French House guests.

Detailed Reviews
We recently spend several nights at Sugar Reef and enjoyed the unique experience. The rooms in the French House are quite spacious with great views of the surrounding country side. The beach front restaurant had wonderful food, but a limited menu. You must take their quiz to see if this is the place for you as the amenities are limited. Perhaps the best asset here are the people. Dexter was wonderful and could not do enough for you, we loved him. Judit the manager was extremely helpful and easy to work with. Everyone we met was very helpful and friendly. Thank you all!

We stayed at gracious Emmett’s fabulous airBnB above (Norway House)- glorious views, and there is a B&B still above that (French house), but Sugar Reef Hotel and cafe are both closed until further notice.
Been plaqued intermittently by Sargassum seaweed. All in Industry Bay.

Absolute no frills luxury. Unbridled paradise.
We booked for one week and ended up staying for nearly three weeks. Stunning views, wonderful plunge pool, dream kitchen, lovely breeze (very pleasant on hot days), comfortable beds, books, local info, snorkels, games, good wi-fi, friendly service by on-site Dexter, ... a dream location.

I recently spent two weeks by myself at the Sugar Reef Hotel after a year of working non stop, and was in need of peace and quiet... It was paradise.
I always check the bad reviews on TripAdvisor to get a real feel of the place because I have high expectations and have been burned before... I found just a couple - and they were about the noise environment; the sound of waves at the Beach House suites etc... As a sound engineer, I am very sensitive to sound and have to admit that it was a transition to get used to the lovely cacophony of the night there, frogs, birds and the sound of the surf... I am used to traffic and sirens...
First of all, I would like acknowledge the wonderful staff who made me feel like part of their family; Joanne - what would I have done without you!? Awesome Dawson who makes fresh juice every morning and the best Dark and Stormy drinks! The lovely Miss Rosie who takes care of the French House and Mahalia and her superb aesthetic skills, Jefferson who is always willing to drive you around if you wish, Javal and his lovely wife who always have a nice smile for you, The ground crew -Cornelius and et al., the kind Judith who oversees everything with European efficiency, Mr Ehmmit who is the most discreet proprietor and lastly the charming and wise Mr. Alexander who is always keeping a watchful eye on the land he has been part off his whole life.
Lastly I would like to commend the Kitchen!!! I love food and was constantly delighted with "Chef"! His love of local ingredients and world fusion inspirations were a dellectible delight each and every meal. Fabulous! Thank-you!
I Highly recommmend a boat trip with the "African" to the Tobago Cays. Next time I will do a four day trip. He is a true seaman, bon vivant and a great cook to boot!
As for transportation Mr. Ollivierre and his two sons are always available and very helpful - I would recommend that you stay loyal to their service- Shout out to Country Man Garvin! Thanks man!
I ventured off of the estate a few times but kept coming back to spend the day because it was just perfect.
Thank-you all so very much.
See you as soon as possible

My wife and I stayed at Sugar Reef in February 2013, and we're sure it will always be a vacation getaway we will never forget. The primary aspect that drew us to Sugar Reef was its location abutting a nature preserve on the northeastern of the island. Nestled in a cluster of green hills with a panoramic view of the turquoise ocean (Industry Beach) and rolling green hills, the closest neighboring property to the French House was barely in earshot. In fact, the only thing you could hear was the steady murmur of breaking waves and tropical birds. And this is exactly what we wanted - nature, peace and privacy.
Granted, we happened to be the only guest staying at French House at the time (other than Sugar Reef's super talented interior designer, Jonathan Berger, who happened to be doing some finishing touches on the nearby restaurant). Nonetheless, considering the layout of the house and open terrace, there is plenty of shared space to accommodate several guests....not to mention our super accommodating house attendant, Rosie - who served us breakfast every morning, made our bed and answered all of our "tourist" questions with a warm smile.
Having stayed at both the beach house and French House (Baliceaux), we really got to experience Sugar Reef inside and out. On arrival, we were greeted by Christine and Devon, who were brought in to run Sugar Reef during it's initial launch. On a side note, if you run a hotel and need someone to run it better, Christine and Devon know what they are doing! I wish I remembered their last names, but I'm sure Sugar Reef owners (Heather and Emmet) could get you that info.
Our first night there we stayed in one of the beach rooms - the perfect transition from Brooklyn, NY!!! The sound of the waves rocked us both to sleep like babies. Getting to walk out the back door, just steps from the beach, is an amazing experience and feeling.
First day, we laid out, did some snorkeling (there is snorkeling gear available to use....and a kayak) and had a wonder lunch at the restaurant. Keep in mind, Industry Beach is on the windward side. By no means is it like the north shore of Maui, but it can be a little rough. The day we were there, it was a little too windy to kayak...and a little too stirred up for snorkeling.
We settled for laying under the palm trees with a rum punch from the bar and a good book to read at Industry Beach.....an excellent first day in paradise.
For nights 2-7, we stayed at the French House, which as mentioned, provides stellar views and nature-induced peace and quiet. Yoga on the terrace, dip in the pool, nap in the hammock, star gazing at night....it's the ideal life for lounging...or as they say in the Caribbean...liming.
Now, with all this praise, keep in mind that Bequia is not for everyone.
We really appreciated Sugar Reef website's "Go or No" section, as it's easy to see that Bequia is not for everybody. In other words, if you can't live without A.C. (not that you need it anyway) and television (there is wifi) or don't like mosquito netting over your bed, then Bequia is not for you. But, as mentioned, this is exactly the kind of getaway my wife and I were looking for.
General Tips:
You will want to get out and explore the island (something which we will do more of for our next visit). You may want to consider renting a car. You will definitely need to take a cab if you want to go into town ($30EC one way) or Princess Margaret Beach ($50EC or about $20US one way). I'm not sure what the daily rental for a car is, but I imagine you will save in costs for an extended stay. We wanted to explore Moon Hole, and probably would have if we had rented a car. Not that it wasn't suggested, it was simply our choice to be more homebodies this time around.
Also, keep in mind that the walk down from French House to the restaurant/Industry Beach is a 10 minute walk (roughly half a mile). While it's no problem going down, it's a workout going up. No problem for my wife and I (we're pretty fit), but you should keep this in mind. Lucky for us, our hosts were super kind and offered to drive us back to the French House. If you stay in one of the beach rooms, you need not worry as much about transportation, unless you're going into town....
If you are staying in the French House, buy some food in town. The Sugar Reef restaurant is amazing, but since the French House has a kitchen, you might as well buy some odds and ends (i.e. rum and punch). The continental breakfast is definitely better than your typical "continental" breakfast (fresh fruit, banana bread, yogurt/granola), but after 7 days straight, you're probably going to want some variety. I personally recommend mixing your passion fruit with the yogurt and granola :) The honor bar (beer and soda) was very appreciated. $5EC Hairoun beers isn't bad at all!
Snorkeling:
I did hear that you can enter the water by the turtle sanctuary (not really worth visiting on its own, imho) and drift snorkel around the north tip leading into Industry Bay. This is not for sissies, though. While it always looks scarier standing from the shore, you don't want to do this if it's your first time snorkeling.
My advice is to definitely spend a day out at Princess Margaret Beach and adjacent South Bay. The waves are super calm and the snorkeling (southern end of Princess Margaret) is fantastic. Had a great dinner at a restaurant on the Lower Bay (forget the name!) right on the beach, but I heard that several of these "Locals" restaurants on Lower Bay are good. Jacks (on Princess Margaret) just seemed like an overpriced trap for the sailboat traffic.
I also hear the Friendship Rose boat to Tobago Kays offers the best snorkeling (something we will do next time). Be sure to book well in advance (they only sail a couple times each week). You can do so at their office on Port Elizabeth. On that note, I recommend taking a walk around Port Elizabeth (on the seawalk) by the water. Nice setting to grab a drink and do some liming.

We spent 3 days relaxing in a Beach Cottage room at Sugar Reef on Bequia.
The hotel is remote with a Robinson Crusoe feel to it. The beach cottages adjoin the restaurant and have a whitewashed rustic aesthetic. They contain drift wood furniture which is comfortable and functional. The bed was very comfortable and was draped with mosquito netting. There is no television but the wifi is good.
The hotel is eco friendly with spring water and solar heating. The green focus permeates the hotel right down to the bamboo straws used in the restaurant.
The cottages step straight onto the beach. There is a small patio which is not particularly functional. However, you don't really need it as there are plenty of beach lounges shaded under the trees. The beach is ok. There are certainly better on the island. There is a pool at the French House but it is not for use by Beach Cottage guests.
The staff were without exception extremely helpful and accommodating. We were leaving early in the morning and they prepared a picnic breakfast for us to have on the ferry.
Overall our stay was very pleasant and relaxing.

I booked a room at Sugar Reef for 5 nights as part of a wedding that I was attending. It's a lovely hotel that has 2 properties. 'The Beach House' which has rooms that have direct access to the beach and 'The French House', in the mountains overlooking the sea.
The staff are friendly and attentive, the rooms simple and clean and the property itself has a great design that is sympathetic to the local environment. The food is fantastic with fresh, local ingredients served with a Caribbean twist. This is a great place to pause, relax, rest and rejuvenate.
When I arrived, I was informed that I would be accommodated in the French House. I was very surprised to find that this property was a 5 minute drive (or about 15 minute walk) into the mountains and even more surprised to learn that I would be the only guest staying in the property. It is very isolated, with no staff present and, frankly, I felt unsafe to be there. The hotel will drive you from the main property to the French House, but this service ends after dinner (around 21.00) so on my first evening, I had to leave my friends at 21.00 to return to the house and was left their alone until 9:00am the following morning. Spending 12 hours alone in a dark house in the mountains rather than celebrating with friends was very far from the dream holiday I had imagined.
Further, during my stay, my room was not serviced properly (for example toilet paper not replenished for 2 days and 'honesty bar' left with no water after day 1). As there are no staff available at the French House then you have to make do with what is there. I paid almost 200 Euros per night, so not getting the basics right was a big surprise. If I had known that I would have been staying in the mountains, alone in an area away from the rest of my travelling party, I would have booked alternative accommodation.
As the only guest staying at the French House, I was definitely an after thought to the staff, as evidenced by the room not being properly serviced. My advice, especially if travelling solo or with friends is CHECK BEFORE YOU BOOK. If you are hoping for a beach side Caribbean holiday, then Sugar Reef is probably not for you. Conversely, if you want a peaceful mountain retreat, then it is the perfect place.

We have been on the island for over a week firstly staying over on Lower Bay and then we chose to stay at Sugar Reef mostly on the reviews on Trip advisor for a few days of luxury.
We chose a beach room to add to the romance .. Think again. The sound of waves alone would be fine however the constant thundering of water on the reef adds to the volume as did the wind on the trees around the room . The temperature in the room never dropped below 27 Celsius , the trees around the room impeding any breeze through the open windows. Both us and our neighbours are totally shattered.. So maybe stay at the house if you want to sleep.
Breakfast is sadly a disappointment. Ok fruit and a bowl if yogurt might suffice on person but if you want eggs you have to request a cooked breakfast the night before. It's served slap dash, this morning the ranked were dirty and the fruit juice didn't get served until the end as it was locked in the fridge ... The so called fresh pastries loose any quality when they appear to get micro waved to a rubbery leathery dough. The one choice of honey sweetened juice may also not be to taste .
The dining menu is small and well formed and well executed , a bit too much bread on the menu it's more lunch style , but the specials that run for a week are nice. If you are here more than a few days dine out for variety.
The staff are super friendly, the beach is ok for a few hours but better elsewhere on the island so do venture out.
I give the place a 3 just because it's lacking that little bit extra.. A fridge maybe in the room, a better stocked bar..

We have traveled to Bequia many times and it is probably our most favorite island in the Caribbean. We have sailed around the St Vincent Grenadines and always come by Sugar Reef for drinks and dinner - beautiful setting, great service and wonderful food. This last trip we actually stayed 5 nights at this eco-boutique hotel and it was one of the best places we have stayed anywhere!
There are 3 rooms down in the 'Beach House' where the restaurant is, and 5 rooms up in the "French House", which is where we stayed in the Master Suite. The entire house was like a little family as we had breakfast every morning on the terrace in the house, provided by the hotel and always wonderful! The Master Suite has it's own terrace and gorgeous views of the hillside and the ocean. We would definitely want to stay in this suite again as it was the largest and the most luxury of all the rooms. We also popped inside the Mistress Suite which sits right by the plunge pool on the property and that also was very idyllic and perfect spot for a romantic vacation for two! You actually cannot go wrong with any room at Sugar Reef whether it be down at the Beach House or up at the French House. There is a shuttle that takes you at any time between the two, but it is also a very short, nice walk as well.
You won't find a better staff than here either. It is run by Judith, a Hungarian ex-Pat who is married to a local business owner and comes from a hospitality background so the service is on par with a 4-star European beach resort. Sunshine drives the shuttle and is always around, and Tatiana can help you with any reservation you need! The property is owned by Emmett, who lives onsite in the Norway House and comes by to greet guests at different times throughout lunch and dinner.
If you visit Bequia and want the most amazing experience than stay at Sugar Reef Bequia. If you are sailing around the islands and only have time to explore for a day, come here for lunch, dinner or drinks - they have always been very friendly to sailors stopping by and we have lost many hours on our charters sipping rum on the gorgeous beach and enjoying the fantastic food! I cannot wait to be back at Sugar Reef!!

My husband and I spent a week at the Sugar Reef hotel and it was absolute paradise. We had one of the three rooms on the beach, and we fell asleep each night to the sound of the waves. It was magical. Our room was bright & airy with a comfortable 4-poster bed, draped with a pristine mosquito net (although we never saw any skeeters in the room). We travelled all around Bequia, having lunch or dinner out at a variety of places, and we concluded that Sugar Reef has the best restaurant on the island. We can also confirm that Dawson makes by far the best rum punch on Bequia. One of the best things about our stay was the friendly team at Sugar Reef - Tatiana, Cornelius, Dawson, and of course Shawn, who brought us a delicious breakfast every morning. And to top it all off, Crescent Beach is beautiful and the water is lovely for swimming or just floating around. Bequia is pretty much the perfect Caribbean island, and we definitely recommend Sugar Reef as the place to stay.
