(+'s): They were able to accomodate Gluten Free/Vegetarian meals. Hotel, beach, and grounds were very clean. (-'s): TV was limited and could not get closed captioning to work. Showers take 15-25 minutes to get hot. No exhaust fan in bathroom. Elevators very slow. Beach and pool loungers and umbrellas need upkeep. Staff rarely smiled.
This is probably the lowest rating I have given a Westin Hotel. Some things were very nice, but overall the resort was a disappointment. The patio door leaked, so the carpet extending 2 feet from the door was always wet. The water in the showers never got hot. The AC thermostat only worked occasionally. About half of the lounge chairs at the beach were torn and or worn out. Also, keep in mind that "Island View" rooms are not really and "Island View", but a view of the parking lot and some stores across the street. Also, only about half the rooms facing this way had balconies. I would pay the extra for the ocean and or pool view.
We stayed here for 5 nights and it was a disappointing experience. I don't bother spending time writing reviews but for the price they charge I am hoping that someone else saves some money and aggravation by reading this. I think the majority of the reviews come from the conference travelers that this hotel obviously caters to so they don't really care about the rate since its on the company dime. First and foremost, we travel as a family pretty often and I understand it is spring break so certain things are to be expected but the manager on duty Tiffany could not have handled the situation any worse. The hotel seems to cater more to business conferences and focuses their attention to those travelers. The nightly rate when we were there was $1200 and a resort fee of $65 per night. They don't tell you that they also own the motel across the street (Sunshine Suites) so you can stay there for 1/3 the price and half the resort fee to have full access to the Westin. I learned this by talking to some other guests by the beach. The only thing this hotel has going for it is the beach location but at that price you are paying close to what the Ritz charges just two doors down. Save yourself the aggravation and stay at the Ritz instead. If you don't want to pay that much and but still want to enjoy the only positives this hotel has to offer then just stay at the Sunshine Suites across the street. Rooms were dated, dirty, and dilapidated. My kid found a roach in her bed on the second night (see photo). Lights kept going out and breaker had to be reset multiple times to get them back on. This is especially bothersome when the AC is broken and you have to get up in the middle of the night to adjust it or use the restroom. I brought everything listed here to the attention of the manager when leaving and she could care less. Her solution was to credit me 3 nights of the resort fee. She didn't even listen to what I said and it was obvious this is just the company response to complaints as I heard her do it for some else later during check out. I wasn't even finished explaining the situation before she said that was the solution. Nothing will be fixed until they acknowledge there is a problem and try to correct. Crediting a resort fee that is already ridiculously hight to start with does nothing. Below is an easy to digest review so that others won't make the same mistake of staying here: 1. "Partial Ocean View" room consisted of staring right at the convention ball room. See attached photo. 2. AC was broken first three nights which prevented any sleep. Explained every morning to staff what the issue was and only when I got the right person who actually listened to me did the issue get resolved. Generally staff ignores guests which makes sense after speaking with manager. When speaking to them you get blank stares as if they are trying their hardest not to roll their eyes. 3. Had breakfast two included and breakfast buffet did not look appetizing at all so told waiter that my wife and I were not eating only the kids were. The guy made frequent trips to the table just to make sure we were not actually eating like we were trying to pull a fast one on him. At one point my wife was peeling a hard boiled egg for my son and the guy just stared at us waiting to see if she put it in her mouth or his. Another morning the staff was arguing with each other loudly in front of everyone making it so uncomfortable that my daughter was trying to figure out if there was some sort of danger and if we should leave. 4. Towel hut staff treat you like criminals which is shocking since you pay $65 per day for a "resort" fee that basically just gives you towels. They yell at you if you try to get towels before they are open, even if it a few minutes. Then one night my kid fell in the water so I went to the hut to get him a towel and two staffers berated me like a criminal for getting a towel. I told them my kid was wet and they didn't seem to care. I'm surprised they even noticed me since both their heads were buried in their cell phones. 5. One day it rained so everyone came in and kids went in the pool, including mine. A few were throwing a ball around. A security guard ran up to them and screamed at them not to play in the pool and to go back to the beach (in a rain storm). It was the most bizarre thing I had witnessed. We spent another 2 nights at another property that was half the price but did not have the beach location the Westin did. It was night and day. Everyone great, rooms great, sure the beach wasn't as good but you don't even mind it because you aren't being yelled at by stuff for stupid reasons. …
The Hibiscus spa is amazing!! Ask for Susmita —she also goes by Mimi. Best massage ever! Very good pressure and technique for massage!! The spa also has a very nice sauna and steam room open to guests even without a spa appt. Great way to get out of the sun and relax.
The Westin Grand Cayman was absolutely amazing in everyway. The most spectacular part of my stay was the "Toys in the Sand" dinner through their Beach House Restaurant at the Westin. Being able to sit at a private table on the beach with a front row seat to a beautiful sunset was just the start of this amazing experience. The Beach House restaurant food and service excelled in every way to make the whole experience even better. Executive Chef Sandy Tuason and his team at the Westin served most exquisite dishes I had while on the Island to make the night that I will always cherish and remember. From the first dish that was served, Lobster & Miso Shrimp Dumplings, to the ending of the Chocolate Lava Cake, everything was perfect.
World class dining experience at two of the Westin Grand Cayman restaurants. Tortuga Beach Grill standouts were their meaty conch fritters, fish tacos, and dressing on their salads, not to mention the atmosphere and sunset backdrop setting. We were also pleased to sample their curry night, which turned out some of the best indian food we’ve had….simply a culinary delight! Highlight was dining at their sushi and seafood restaurant Woto. Every dish was fresh, scrumptious, and superbly presented. The chef sampler that evening and hamachi were phenomenal! No detail was overlooked, from the freshly grated wasabi to the outstanding sake selection to the superb ambiance and service. Hats off to the executive chef and his/her culinary team! Now back home, we recently dined at one of our sushi favs, and we’ve been ruined…. gotta get back to Woto! …
Was not too happy that checking in (about 4pm) as a gold member and for a major milestone birthday, we received probably the worst room in the the hotel. It was in first floor, facing parking lot. No upgrade, as gold level let alone major celebration would usually be offered for. Unlike the Palm, where we had come from (moved for meeting at Westin). And it wasn’t even the actual birthday when at the Palm. The Palm had a bottle of Tattinger, a card and a personal greeting. The first night, a rooster kept crowing right outside our window at 4am. Could not sleep. Then they finally allowed us to move to a 4th floor room, still facing parking lot but I guess far enough from the rooster it was quiet enough. I had requested a quiet room on booking and this is often accommodated when we are gold members at a hotel. Then it’s just a zoo at the Westin. As is the Ritz. Seriously, check out further down the beach. It’s chaos on the beach at Westin. You’ll be lucky to not be hit by a ball or find any space to sit. Zero relaxation or view here…
Overall, we had a great trip to GC and the Westin. The pros: beautiful hotel, nice lobby, live music every night, great pool, gorgeous, wide beach. Great location and walkable (within a mile) to many really great restaurants/shopping. The Tortuga bar/restaurant on property was great and we had lunch several times and every single day was great. Great happy hour specials too. We tried The Beach House for dinner on our last night and it was excellent too. Red Sail Sports right on property which was convenient. Concierge was also very helpful. The cons: The beach chairs and tables on the sand are in terrible need of replacement. Many of the mesh seats are ripped and the metal frames are dirty and terribly worn. The little side tables are no better and were filthy. I had to scrub the tables with cocktail napkins every day before I dared putting my things on it. When you walk two doors down to another high end property and see the difference between the beach furniture, the contrast is stark. The coffee shop in the lobby needs more help-- the line moves at a glacial pace. Also-- the housekeeping was very inconsistent. Some days our towels were only partially replaced. Some days we had no shampoo. Some days they didn't clean the shower. Some days our drinking glasses were left dirty on the counter. Every single day something (or more than one thing) really wasn't right. I had to ask for towels, coffee pods, shampoo, etc more than once. I expected more from a Westin. Lastly, spring for the ocean view. We opted for "Island View" expecting a view of the property and palm trees (if not the ocean), but instead Island View means "parking lot view". Had the description been more accurate, I would have upgraded my room category--not great marketing on their part! As I said--overall we had a great trip but there were a few things that definitely could use some improvement. …
You know what the Westin Grand Caymans needs to do to improve? Absolutely nothing. A perfect location on Seven Mile Beach. A warm and welcoming staff. Glorious food options. And how they control the weather is beyond me. This is my second stay at the Westin since the poor folks down the beach at the Marriott lost all their sand. My membership level with Marriott offers me a free breakfasts at Ferdinand’s. A typical large buffet spread, including a friendly omelette station. Attentive service along with outside seating for a beach view makes for a nice start to a hectic day of lounging. The sand beach is among the widest on the island. First come first serve lounge chairs and umbrellas (Part of your resort fee.) The cabanas are an extra charge and priced for the more wealthy among us. Chrystal-clear smooth water with rippling waves gently lulls you to sleep. Or if relaxation is not your goal — they contract with Red Sail to offer every type of exciting water sport imaginable at the north end of the resort. The pool is one of the largest among the island resorts with a swim up bar. Pool seating is plentiful and pretty darn attentive service with a push button call system in use. No long waits for a Caybrew. They offer an extensive pool / beach menu; along with some evening themed menus on the pool deck, often accompanied by some live entertainment. The Woto restaurant is among my favorite hotel eateries anywhere — great food and service. The Beach House is their high-end gastronomical offering. Many exciting and tasty items on that menu. Speaking of food… there are some solid alternatives directly across the street from the resort. While I have nothing but solid props for the Westin, just so you know I’m not a paid shill or relative of the manager, I’ll share that the bathroom sink in my room is the strangest design I’ve ever encountered — and I’ve been around the world. A solid, one-piece molded slope design emptying to a narrow drain trough. When brushing one’s teeth the resulting foam is hard pressed to flow downwards, necessitating a wash of serval cups of water to move the glacier of foam down the drain. There. See? I’m not a AI bot. The Westin and staff are as close to perfection as you will find in the Islands.…
Quick summary: •WAAAY too expensive for a room no better than a cheap holiday inn. •We booked a room that had "partial Ocean View". See photo! It was a view of AC units on the top of other buildings! Front desk "at least you're not looking at the parking lot!" Seriously. Half our view WAS the parking lot. •Our room was ice cold and couldn't turn off A/C! Called down and they sent someone to "fix" it. Then it was so hot it was hotter than outside! SO went down AGAIN and they sent someone up. Cold again but they just closed half the vent. So...no control over temp. Turn everything off and still blows non stop. I've seen this complaint quite a bit. •Property across the street gets to use Westin Pool and all amenities at a fraction of the price with bigger rooms and kitchenette. •Never enough chairs at the pool or beach especially with other properties using them...see above. People get up before sunrise and claim chairs. •Automatic gratuity added to EVERYTHING! Even if you just buy a soda from the fridge. •Basically no internet unless you pay to upgrade. Just turns on and off every 5 seconds. Basically forcing you to pay another $15 a day which I didn't do. •We were told our room had a pull out sofa and to call if we wanted it pulled out and made. Got to out room...no sofa! Manager said "huh, it used to have one. They must've taken it out!" Awesome. •The most underwhelming and overpriced meals we had were on the property. Eat elsewhere for your money. Pool food was ok. •Bartender messed up drinks and gave my wife a virgin daiquiri. So they remade it, gave us a "complimentary" free one and then CHARGED us for all three!! Watch your charges! •the beach in front of the hotel is the only thing this hotel has going for it...and it's open to other properties, so you can get the best part of the Westin without even staying here! Do that. This is my wife's 3rd time to the island and her first at this Westin. Needless to say we'll go elsewhere next time. Unless you like not getting much for a LOT of money, stay elsewhere. We've traveled as a family a lot and stayed at many different islands. This was by far the worst bang for the buck. …
