A lovely relaxed hotel, with a noticeable lack of the usually hotel formalities.
Our room was good, not amazing but as we expected, and everything worked, wi-fi, air con etc. A reasonable view of the sea.

Hotel managers and staff were always friendly and helpful.

Breakfast was very good, I particularly liked the lack of buffet! Everything was cooked to order and arrived fairly quickly.

Food at the main restaurant was very good, with great cocktails served at the bar. Food at the less formal Tramonti was underwhelming, we tried it one night and that was enough – a limited menu (even more limited as they’d run out of the starter we both wanted) and pizzas were small for the price. Great setting though, with a lot of potential to improve.

Location is good, and driving is relatively easy, whilst the roads look scary, people drive slowly and there is very little traffic.

We were only stayed at the Sugar Mill for 3 nights of our trip, but they were the best by far.

Our room was fantastic. We chose a poolside suite. It still had a sweeping view of Jost as well as Long Beach. The bed was incredibly comfortable, the living area was spacious and well appointed, the bathroom was indeed large enough for the two of us to get ready, and the outdoor shower was fantastic (especially in the cold rain!).

The staff at Sugar Mill are incredibly friendly. When you want to have a chat watching the waves they happily oblige, or leave you alone if that's your thing. They were very attentive to our every request, and offered amenities we didn't think to ask for. Even stocking our mini fridge with fizz, wine, beer, etc., and decorating the room with fresh flowers.

Meals were available most hours of the day: breakfast was a two hour window, lunch and dinner both had wider windows. Cocktails were available as often as you like. We did the all-inclusive option. It was an excellent choice. The food, especially dinner, is top notch (lobster thermidor, and scallops with cheesy risotto), lunch was excellent, and breakfast was the usual.

The hotels beachside loungers are a highlight- close to the bar, private, and with excellent views. We didn't rent a car, and thus were limited by the location (but the staff actually conveyed us to and from a beach when we asked how to get there!).

We don't often return to the same place, but the Sugar Mill is worth it.

An excellent experience from beginning to end. Responsiveness to emails can be slow at times, but always within 48 hours maximum. Nothing to get your underwear in a bunch about!
The hotel is located on Apple Bay and has 24 rooms with a pool, beach, and spa. The restaurant is very good when compared to other island choices; and probably the best on the island. The setting is beautiful, relaxing, and enjoyable. I liked this hotel much better than the Scrub Island Resort, which I found to be quite generic and felt like I was staying in a condo at the marina. The Sugar Mill has that island feel with accompanying friendly and helpful staff, a dining room that exudes charm, very good food, and is relaxing. There is an honor bar (yes - that relaxed of an atmosphere) at the pool and a restaurant on the sandy beach, though small, but very beautiful and consistent to the environs. Be aware that the beach is across the road, but super easy walking distance. The owners, Mary & Dennis Carmedy, and managers, Andrea & Rupert Starkey, are very qualified hoteliers and have added value to the property ever since purchasing the Sugar Mill. Previous reviews claiming a loss of fidelity or decreased appeal due to upgrades and rebuilding were not noted at all. Rather, the upgraded construction and improvements are notably consistent with the environs, beautiful, and consistent to the harmonious appeal of the property. I have stayed at numerous properties on Tortola, but found the Sugar Mill the best of all. A definite return in my book!

My wife and I and our good friends had the distinct pleasure of visiting the Sugar Mill Hotel the week of February 24th to March 2nd.

After traveling the Caribbean for many years and many beautiful islands; the BVI Sugar Mill Hotel is now our favorite new destination.

The Management Team of Andrea and Rupert are outstanding and make it their personal goal of insuring each and every guest enjoys the vacation of a lifetime.

They go out of their way to develop and maintain smooth relationships with guests, and show awareness of, and consideration for the many requests of their clients.

The resort is a very quaint and charming boutique hotel; from the great guest rooms, lovely restaurants and beautifully manicured grounds.

The food is loving prepared by Chef's Bernard and Tony and is consistently outstanding ...... day in and day out!

The Waitresses: Kina, Annie, Rosella, Nia and Chantel go out of their way to make sure every meal is a pleasure and build great relationships with their guests.

The Bartenders: Victoria, Jason and Sandra are always ready and able to offer a great libation at lunch and especially dinner.

Our Housekeeping Team of Savilla, Laura and Cavion ..... were quick to make sure all rooms and special requests were taken care of quickly, and much appreciated.

Hard working Stoutt and Richard maintain the beautiful grounds and landscaping.

Once in a lifetime you come across a beautiful resort like the Sugar Mill Hotel with a delightful Management Team (Andrea and Rupert) and a supporting cast who display a high energy level and work long and hard to insure their guests a great experience and memories of a lifetime.

I can't wait to book our next adventure at the Sugar Mill next year and see my "new" brother Rupert!

My husband and I took a trip to Tortola with 2 other couples and had the pleasure of staying 5 days and 4 nights at the Sugar Mill Hotel. The Hotel was about a 45 min cab ride from the airport, but no worries- the taxi drivers will make sure you have enough beverages to pass the time! Upon arrival we were greeted with a warm welcome and cold washcloths and champagne/wine/ beer whatever we wanted. The entire Sugar Mill Staff was very accommodating the whole stay and the Managers Andrea & Rupert made sure we were having a good time and our needs were taken care of. The first day of our stay we hung out at the pool and enjoyed the honor bar stocked with beer, wine & mixers. We asked the bar staff for vodka & ice and immediately they brought up a bottle and a bag of ice and added it to the mini fridge. The second day it rained and umbrellas were out in our rooms and board games were brought down to entertain us. We ended up catching a ride w/ Rupert to the Jost Van Dyke ferry and spending the day at The Soggy Dollar with the best Pain Killers. The third day we went on the catamaran tour with Rupert & the owner Dennis. We went snorkeling by Norman Island and Peter Island, even got to jump off the back of Willie T’s pirate ship bar. Lunch and drinks were included and everything was delicious. The following day we did the round island tour with Rupert & Dennis again. We loved hearing all the stories about the island, the people & the hurricane. We hopped from beach to beach and everyone was empty like they cleared the entire beach just for us! The day ended with a trip to the Rum Distillery aka “the Rummery” and BBCs at Stoutts Lookout. It was a wonderful trip and we made great memories. Would definitely recommend the Sugar Mill to anyone visiting Tortola.

We went to the Sugar Mill to celebrate our anniversary. Our trip was originally planned for 2020 but had to be rescheduled due to Covid. They were very helpful and reasonable with rescheduling. The staff was very accommodating and friendly and made us feel welcome. We were on the all inclusive package for a 7 day trip.

We stayed in Room 144 in the Plantation House. The view from the room is breathtaking and the terrace is a lovely place to relax. The refrigerator was stocked with drinks when we got there and they even switched out the wine choices when we told them our preferences. The bed was really comfortable and we had everything we needed. The beach is across the road which seemed like it would be strange but the road isn’t busy and it wasn’t a walk at all. Hurricane Irma deposited a lot of rocks on the beach so we needed our water shoes to go into the water. They are working on the rocks and it should be smooth sand in the future. Once we got past the waterline, it was perfect. Up near the apple cabanas the sand was as you’d expect and we spent a couple of days lounging in a cabana.

As for the all inclusive package - it was a great deal and we’re glad we went that way. The food in both restaurants was delicious and we ate well every day. Since we are wine drinkers we enjoyed their wine menu and while some weren’t included with the package, a large selection of very good wines was included. The Painkiller cocktail was also a favorite. The package also included transfers, a day long boat trip, and a tour of the island. When we added everything up at the end we more than got our money’s worth. It also made it very simple.

This was the most relaxing vacation that we’ve had in a long time. We would recommend it to anyone and would love to go back!

The Sugar Mill Hotel is truly a hidden gem. This resort is five stars plus and I can not wait to visit again. The Sugar Mill is elegant with a glamourous vibe yet not stuffy and very comfortable. The owners Dennis and Mary are friendly hands on delightful people. The restaurants have a European beach side feel and the food is delicious. The sparkling pool, white sands beach and romantic rooms are surrounded by palms and tropical foliage . Best vacation ever.

First of all, we unfortunately had to cancel/postpone our trip twice due to a family illness the first time and the second due to my husband requiring surgery for an injury. Andrea was most gracious in accepting the cancellations.
So glad we persevered and finally made the trip to this lovely hotel. The 400 year old sugar mill restaurant itself has been amazingly transformed into something you have to see to believe the elegance it exudes.
Rupert escorted us to our room on a golf cart after thoroughly explaining what to expect during our stay. I can’t explain the feeling when we walked into our room. It was the most romantic scene with fresh flowers from the trees garnishing our room, our bed, and bathroom. The stunning view from our balcony made me feel like a Juliet. The view overlooking these beautiful tropical trees to Apple Bay and feeling that you just can’t get enough.
If the huge stand alone tub doesn’t get you, the rain head shower will. I LOVED that tub. The bed was the most comfortable bed we have ever experienced in a hotel with the softest of sheets.
The room attendant was so pleasant every day and eager to please. She immediately gratified each request with the utmost care and concern, e.g. extra towels and a top sheet. The room was clean and functional as well.
Rupert was the best chauffeur. His confidence and skill driving the island was assuring on a unfamiliar island with some challenging roads. He was just plain fun to be around especially, on our swell around the island tour. I swear he has a permanent smile; so approachable and a pleasure to chat with. The tour was highlighted when Dennis arrived with a delicious picnic lunch on one of the gorgeous beaches we visited. Thank you for quite the elaborate picnic.
Mary was a pleasure to talk with and was always so beautifully attired. Didn’t stop her from jumping in with an apron to help wherever needed. This team is what makes a hotel a vacation to remember and plan for another visit, Thank you to each and everyone who contributed to a superb vacation at the Sugar Mill and the island of Tortola.
One more shout out again to Andrea for graciously attending to every blessed request with genuine concern and consideration.
I am writing a so deserving separate review on the incredible food we thoroughly enjoyed each and every evening at the Sugar Mill Restaurant all inclusive menu. One menu I will never forget!

Sugar Mill Hotel & Spa located on Carrot Bay in Tortola is a holiday paradise. The rooms are well air conditioned and nicely furnished. The shower attached to the rear of the spacious bathroom is located in the open air which is a nice touch. Our room Al’s had a porch attached.

The grounds are beautifully tropical, with palms, flamboyant trees and fruit trees namely mango, star fruit, soursop, and bread fruit. Slight negative here after it rains the mosquitos will appear and pester those of you who are a good insect lunch!

The restaurant is al fresco with beautiful views out to sea and neighboring BVI Islands. The quality of their offerings are first class. A choice of ‘fresh catch of the day’ ranging from grouper to trigger fish, mahi mahi, red fish etc. The lobster is delightful, especially served Thermidor style. Half was sufficient for me. Steaks and lamb are good quality and cooked to order.

Pre and post dinner drinks are professionally prepared and served by Vicky, Curtis, Brandon and others. Wait service was competent and led by Head waitress Marilyn.

Breakfast was served beachside at the Tramonti. Shantel and Deanna are the usual wait staff. Production from the kitchen suffered a little from ‘island time’ speed, that said all offerings were nicely cooked.

The on-site spa offers good quality massages according to my wife who highly recommended the work of Marjorie. After your spa you can take a short walk over to the pool and cool off.

So who makes the place tick? Andrea and her husband Rupert are visible and active everyday and have oversight of the restaurant every evening. The owners Dennis and Mary, two Brits are visible daily. They have rebuilt the property post Hurricane and have ensured that the property continues to be a wonderful first choice experience of paradise and comfort in the British Virgin Islands.

After getting fully vaccinated, we reserved our room at the Sugar Mill last March (yes, we plan ahead) and we are so glad that we did. Even with 9 months of anticipation, Sugar Mill exceeded our hopes for a relaxing and pampering vaction. Our room (#110) was large and well-outfitted. We particularly liked the ice-maker, perfect for filling our water bottles for our beach trips or making late afternoon cocktails. Although we are usually early risers, we often lazed in the comfortable bed. The terrace was spacious with a gorgeous view across the water to Jost van Dyke. The general managers, Andrea and Rupert, were always at the ready to answer any questions and “yes” was the response to any request. Boat trip to White Bay? They arranged it. Beach day in Smuggler’s Cove? Sure! And here’s lunch packed in a massive cooler that contained enough food for lunches for the week, not just the day. Need a taxi at the crack of dawn (6am) to get to the airport? No problem. Our room and the entire hotel was immaculate. Dennis and Mary, the owners, were gracious and friendly to all. The staff was wonderful and when we left, it was sadness and hugs all around. We booked the “5 star all-inclusive”, which seemed kind of expensive when it was first charged to our credit card, but time and again, we rerflected on how it was worth every penny.

Additionally, there are other restaurants on the island that are great. Sugar Mill would be happy to arrange taxi to and from them for you . They are lovely and very accommodating! Although, I’m not sure you will find better food elsewhere !!!

The resort is hilly. The paths are paved, but it would be difficult with a walker. Request one of there lower level rooms and it may be doable. /the management is great, ask them how they could best assist you.

We did not sign up for the All Inclusive package but it appears it does include beer, wine and cocktails. We had some other plans so it would not have fit our needs. We did get breakfast at the Tramonti across the road. We did not have lunch there but breakfast were very good and plenty of choices. We noted the beach but did not go there. We went to Cane Garden Bay a few kilometers away. There was a nice beach a couple of restaurants - we ate dinner one night at Quito's which was very good. We rented a car (through the hotel) and met some friends who were staying elsewhere. I don't recall paddleboards and kayaks at the hotel but the list of activities seems to indicate you can arrange whatever you need through the hotel. They were outstanding in providing attention to whatever we needed. There is also a chat function on the web site which could answer that specific question. We spent two more weeks with friends on a boat and in St. John. We would have been quite happy to stay at the Sugar Mill for a longer period.
