An excellent experience from beginning to end. Responsiveness to emails can be slow at times, but always within 48 hours maximum. Nothing to get your underwear in a bunch about! The hotel is located on Apple Bay and has 24 rooms with a pool, beach, and spa. The restaurant is very good when compared to other island choices; and probably the best on the island. The setting is beautiful, relaxing, and enjoyable. I liked this hotel much better than the Scrub Island Resort, which I found to be quite generic and felt like I was staying in a condo at the marina. The Sugar Mill has that island feel with accompanying friendly and helpful staff, a dining room that exudes charm, very good food, and is relaxing. There is an honor bar (yes - that relaxed of an atmosphere) at the pool and a restaurant on the sandy beach, though small, but very beautiful and consistent to the environs. Be aware that the beach is across the road, but super easy walking distance. The owners, Mary & Dennis Carmedy, and managers, Andrea & Rupert Starkey, are very qualified hoteliers and have added value to the property ever since purchasing the Sugar Mill. Previous reviews claiming a loss of fidelity or decreased appeal due to upgrades and rebuilding were not noted at all. Rather, the upgraded construction and improvements are notably consistent with the environs, beautiful, and consistent to the harmonious appeal of the property. I have stayed at numerous properties on Tortola, but found the Sugar Mill the best of all. A definite return in my book!…
The Sugar Mill Hotel was exactly what we had wanted for week to just decompress and have fun. We opted for the "all inclusive" package and it was the perfect decision. We had a spotless room with maintained perfectly by our house keeper. The meals were all inclusive, and the menu was incredible with the freshest of seafood and very fine cuts of beef. The Anegada lobsters were huge and cooked to perfection. All our drinks were included and generously served. The selection of house wines was very good. Rupert, the hotel manager, took us on an island excursion. It wasn't just a ride around the island. As a native of Tortola, Rupert gave us an extensive history of the island and what living there is about. The catamaran diving trip was a blast and not a touristy waste of time. The staff in the restaurant made us feel like we were at home. Marilyn and her crew were absolutely the finest. Every question we had, everything we wanted to do, eat, or drink was generously accommodated. .…
What a special place! The staff, the food, the location, the view...are all amazing!! We highly recommend the all inclusive option as the value can't be beat. But the best part of the all inclusive is that every meal is 5 star. This is more than a place to stay, it is a place to make friends. Rupert and Andrea are fantastic. The staff has the sweetest spirit...everyone there made us feel as if we were friends coming for a visit. Kudos to Marilyn who put up with my husband and his crispy cream donut joke every day! If your travels take you to Tortola...this is the only place to stay!! Thank you Sugar Mill!
Fabulous hotel and staff. Excellent food and beautiful location. Room was spotless! Only one recommendation is to have a golf cart available to take people to and from their room as necessary. Owners are warm and share time with guests! Covid test was efficient on departure. Best of luck on their planned expansion! Pat and Tom
Highly recommend the All Inclusive Package, as it provided tremendous value. Feel confident in other people's 5 star reviews - you won't be disappointed. The room had lots of character and felt more like a one bedroom home than a generic hotel room. Breakfast and lunch were solid, but dinner was the star - delicious, high end, and most importantly lots of variety to prevent same restaurant burnout. Chantel, Margret, and Marylee (apologies if the names are misspelled) provided tremendous service. It also include free transportation to and from the airport and amazing excursions - island tour and catamaran day. The pool is very nice, and there is a honor bar with beer, mixers, and hard liquor. The beach is beautiful and overlooks Jost Van Dyke, but it is rocky from Irma, so there is some minor maneuvering through rocks to get to the clear patches in the ocean. Lastly, a special thanks to Rupert and Andrea. They are the true reason for all the 5 star reviews. They were very happy to assist in any requests on additional excursions, taxis, COVID testing, and other questions regarding Tortola.…
We stayed at the Sugar Mill for 3 nights in late May. The staff was very welcoming, in fact Rupert went way out of his way to help me locate my cell phone that was still in the taxi. Our room was like a nice cottage with a large bathroom and balcony, we had a nice view of the ocean. The restaurant was beautiful and wonderful place to dine. Rupert even lined up a new rental car for us for two days. It has a nice pool to enjoy in the afternoon. It is very close to the ferry that goes over to Jost Van Dyke, so we had a fun afternoon going over to the Soggy Dollar and Foxy's. We would highly recommend staying at this resort. One thing that can be improved, is that the mattress on the bed is basically shot, there is no side support anymore and you just slid off the bed.
My wife and I stayed at the Sugar Mill Hotel in Tortola for 7 nights with the all-inclusive formula and loved every minute of it. The hotel is perfectly situated on the west of the island offering memorable sunsets and incredible views over Jost Van Dyke island and offering all the facilities you may wish for. What makes the Sugar Mill truly special are the managers of the hotel, Andrea and Rupert who will go to any lengths to make your stay exceptional, the staff and the restaurant which essentially offers a fine dining experience every night. The main subject of discussion amongst guests during daytime was what they ate the night before and what they will try the following night! The all-inclusive package also includes 2 tours, both high-end experiences. We first went on a full day of sailing on a catamaran visiting several areas of Jost Van Dyke and the following day Rupert took us on a full day tour of the island, visiting secluded coves, beaches, bars and distilleries. To illustrate the kind of place this is, let me pick just one example. On our last day we had a very early start and Rupert had arranged a taxi to take us to the airport. When we got out of our room just before 6am, we found him on his way to our room to help us with the bags and make sure the taxi was on time... Thank you Andrea & Rupert, we hope to be able to come back very soon !…
2022 is the year of my 60th birthday and our 30th wedding anniversary, so we wanted a special trip to celebrate. Thanks to recommendations on Tripadvisor and the hotel website, we decided on 8 nights at Sugar Mill Hotel. What a great decision! We wanted a vacation with beautiful scenary, wonderful food and drink, relaxation, hospitality, and no stress. We were not disappointed! After delayed flights and missing luggage, Murlise delivered us to the Rum Room, looking extremely worn out, I am sure. Immediately Mary (the owner) jumped up from her dinner to greet us. She was delightful and gracious and soon had us feeling like family. Andrea, Rupert , Chef Bernard, and the staff took over from there. The trip around Tortola with Rupert as our guide and the beautiful day of sailing with Captain Kay and Glen were amazing! Both included in the all inclusive option, which is definately worth the price. The food was delicious, compliments to Chef Bernard and his staff at both restuarants - side note- My husband and I met at Culinary School and truelly appreciate a properly prepared meal, We also throughly enjoyed the wine and cocktails thanks to Vicky and Santa. The wait staff was incrediably sweet and efficent - thank you Marilyn, Nia, Shontel, Jessica and all the rest. Housekeeping was equally fantastic, as everything was clean, smelled wonderful and the mini-fridge was always well stocked. Room 103 was perfect for us. Andrea took care of all the important details, like helping get our luggage the next morning, and arranging Covid tests to return to the States, not to mention all the emails before arrival. I can't close without saying how much we enjoyed getting to know the other guests, especially Em and Morgan; Nick and Ashley. With the upcoming expansions - villas and catamirans - we look forward to our next visit to Sugar Mill!…
After a 4-day stay at the Sugar Mill Hotel, my husband and I were so impressed with the hotel, the food, and the very welcoming and friendly staff. The food was SO good, and the cocktails and wine selection were also top notch. It was the perfect place to getaway for some peace and quiet, and relax by the pool, and beautiful beachside. It was an absolutely idyllic setting, nestled by a quiet beach, and surrounded by tropical oasis. We will definitely be coming back! Thank you Sugar Mill team for an unforgettable stay.
Beautiful hotel, great food, great at home service and beautiful views. You feel right at home as soon as you check in. Andrea, the staff and owners make you feel like part of the family for your entire stay. Will definitely be back.
