A relaxing winters break in the Caribbean

The world is a large varied place and we rarely make a return visit, but East Winds is an exception and this was our third visit spread over thirty four years. Our last visit ten years ago was to celebrate my seventieth birthday.
We noticed several changes over the intervening years all for the better, the cottages have been refurbished with better shower and air conditioning. Thoughtfully insect spray, mosquito repellent, emergency flashlight and umbrellas were provided. The garden has matured and is a colourful lush environment teaming with wild life and carefully tended by a team of gardeners.
There is an abundance of sun loungers comfortably spaced throughout the pool and beach areas with ample shade for those who prefer it. The bar staff are on hand to keep you hydrated or serve something stronger from the bar. All the staff are friendly, discrete, courteous and efficient with no request too onerous.
The food is excellent with a buffet breakfast, Pauline will cook your eggs anyway you want them. Buffet and bbq lunches, the lobsters were large and succulent, dinner is four courses with three choice for each course and a couple of wines options each night (red, white or rose) which were changed daily, champagne was always available.
For the more energetic there is a small gym, a fitness trail, kayaking and supervised sailing.
This is not the place if you are looking for loud music and wall to wall entertainment but perfect to relax in the warm Caribbean sunshine in a small beachside resort with good food and wine overseen by the hotel manager Judith.

We were very glad to be back and to see that the majority of the lovely staff that were there in June 2019 (our last visit) were still there.

Our beachfront room, 28, was bijou but with a great shower and nice outside living area where I would watch the early risers on the beach, chat to some of the locals I knew, and from where I would stroll across to go snorkeling.

Housekeeping was excellent (thanks Natalie and team) as usual and our fridge was stocked up regularly by Egbert and Nickie. I loved the fluffy white towels which would put many a 5 star resort to shame – same for the linen.

East Winds has a great website for checking in online from your room, housekeeping requests, and daily menus published for lunch and dinner and the wine list.

There were some changes due to the Covid restrictions. Hopefully temporary!
All food is served to table so no queuing for buffets, bar one day when the Creole menu was served.

The resort was full the week we were there but plenty of shaded space on the beach. The pool area got a little busy in the afternoon but not an issue at all.

Bar service was again mainly to table. Sadly the swim up bar, which was used by the guests regularly making their own cocktails, was not possible due to the Covid rules, so the ever-cheerful Patricia and others would take requests and make the cocktails poolside.

The staff worked very very hard. Mask wearing was supposed to be compulsory around the small resort but not all guests complied with this including some non vaccinated ones. I felt this was unfair, particularly on the staff who had to wear masks ALL the time in 30 degree plus heat.

There were some issues at breakfast due to the time taken to get the food to the table. Tadej the Head Chef took over at breakfast and the service improved after that.

I felt the food had improved under Chef Tadej and his team. Local chefs made a lot of the vegetable side dishes and some were new to me. The chefs took the trouble to explain how they were made so I will be experimenting at home. The wine selection was good for an AI and I always found something nice. One point, it would be so nice to have a dessert wine with the dessert. Port is available for cheese so maybe this could be taken into consideration?

Top marks to Selma, Patricia, Slyvia, Septima and Junias who went above and beyond to serve us during lunch and dinner under somewhat trying circumstances. All other staff (too many to mention) were, without exception excellent too. Slyvia, I expect a full version of "that" song to go along with the “Lime and the Coconut” shaker cocktail next time!

To summarise, I had a brilliant time and was very happy to be back in St Lucia and East Winds!

Our first ever visit to St Lucia and we will be forever grateful to our very good friends for picking East Winds.

I don’t ever recall arriving at any hotel and deciding within just a few minutes, “yes, we are really going to enjoy this”.

The staff are unfailingly helpful and friendly with nothing being too much trouble for them. East Winds is clearly a happy place to work as well as visit.

Our room was generously sized with plenty of space for our clothes and luggage. The bed was large and comfortable with a choice of pillows. The sunken shower is large and much better than either a wet room or shower enclosure.

Food is unfailingly good with plenty of choice and daily variations. Quite the best BBQs we’ve had at any hotel. And of course the restaurant staff; welcoming you with a big smile and professional service.

Bar staff are amicably competitive to create new cocktails and guests are invited to taste and judge! Really good fun.

The organically shaped swimming pool has a ‘swim up bar’, self service with a recipe book to use if you wish. Lots of loungers around the pool too with both shady and sunny areas. All of which is surrounded by the beautiful gardens.

The beach has lots of space and divides roughly into three sections by the restaurant and bar area as well as natural features. No need for a 6am dash to get your towels out on the sun loungers.

Well before we were halfway through our stay we had emailed our Travel Agent, Caribtours, to rebook us for 2020.

We can’t understand all the 5 star reviews of this resort. We checked in after a long flight and hours getting through the covid checks at the airport. If you are travelling to St Lucia book the express airport service as over 2 hours in a tent on the airport tarmac waiting for paperwork to be checked was horrendous. It was so hot! Then you still have to get through all the usual baggage and airport checks.

So, back to Eastwinds. The resort is at best a 3 star. The rooms are clean but basic. We couldn’t believe our first (and only night) in this property was terrible due to barking, howling dogs. It was like being on a set for a werewolf movie. We went to reception to ask to be moved but they are aware there is a problem and moving room would not have made a difference. It was explained that a local resident has guard dogs! I know the hotel can’t manage this but how is it not mentioned on any reviews?

Then we came to our first lunch experience. I’ve read the reviews on the food and again it doesn’t match our experience at all. We were shown to the display of 3 large pans of sloppy curry. The lunch was a choice of lamb, chicken or fish Roti. That was it and the waitress was surprised we could want anything else as “it’s Roti Monday”. I would never want a curry wrap in any location and when I was expecting good food this didn’t cut it. We checked out and moved to another hotel.

If you are considering East Winds please consider the food quality, the beach isn’t great for enjoying the sun, it is small and very shaded and the dog barking is a nightmare.

I have to say on a positive the staff are very friendly though.

Dear lovemyflipflops, I am so sorry that you didn't have a nice time at East Winds, I know the whole team did everything they could to create a good experience but unfortunately not every hotel suites every guest. I very much hope that you enjoyed your alternative hotel and that the holiday turned into a success. Occasionally we do have noise from local dogs as we are in a residential neighborhood, but we don't usually experience the level of noise you unfortunately experienced. We all wish you had stayed a little longer and had the chance to settle in and really enjoy the East Winds vibe, but wish you all the best for future travels. Best wishes, Judith

This was our first holiday since lockdown and having somehow succeeded in extracting ourselves from the UK, we were delighted to see that East Winds is taking Covid very seriously with the various protocols that are in place, including hand sanitisers everywhere, staff and most guests using masks responsibly and the twice daily temperature checks. It made us feel very secure.

As we have been many times before we found it quite strange to try to adjust to the new way of doing things. Breakfast and lunch service are much changed with the help-yourself buffet being replaced by table service for nearly all meals. This has presented some logistical challenges in delivering hot food when dealing with larger parties like ours which happily, the restaurant was able to overcome.

With regards to the food, the dishes being served are probably more interesting than ever and more importantly, very tasty. Chef Tadej is a talented chef operating under the most trying of circumstances and clearly doing his utmost to deliver great meals. Both he and the restaurant manager, Titus were always genuinely interested in any comments we had to make about the food or service.

What hasn’t changed is the beautiful, peaceful location of the hotel and as ever, the wonderful, welcoming staff who, despite having to wear face masks and follow all the protocols still go out of their way to help and make sure the guests have a great time. The welcome we received from Egbert on arrival was truly touching and in the restaurant, without exception everyone was superb but I must mention in particular Selma and Septima who usually had the unenviable task of serving six of us in a lunchtime cabana whilst adhering to the protocols and coping with our (hopefully not unreasonable) demands. On top of that there was the reassuring presence of Charms and Natasha who both took time to regularly come over and discuss how the holiday was going.

It was a stressful and administratively challenging task to complete the journey from the UK to East Winds in these strange times but the rewards for completing it were enormous. For us, after a two and a half year break it was genuinely like returning to a beautiful family home full of familiar (albeit masked) faces and much laughter and happiness where we feel safe, secure and loved. We cannot praise East Winds highly enough and we are already looking forward to seeing everyone there once again next June.

One PCR Test, two extra Govt of Saint Lucia forms, eerily quiet Gatwick, masks on the plane, temperature check at the airport, masks on in our taxi. Tiny changes for our trip back to our favourite hotel/resort.

We were guests at East Winds in its second week after awakening from its 15 month Covid slumber and it was back to business as usual. There was a shared happiness and relief for both guests and staff that East Winds was up and running again.

Room occupancy was essentially low given the recent uncertainties but no corners were cut in the standards of food, beverages and entertainment offered to guests. It was good to see local musicians performing every night and the steel band twice a week at lunchtime.

The onus of the new Covid protocols was entirely borne by the resort staff who were masked at all customer facing times. Guests wore masks while manoeuvring through the restaurant.
Breakfast and lunch were the same quality as on previous visits, presented as a buffet but ordered and served to table be the excellent and ever smiling, ever chatting front of house staff, all of whom have adapted quickly to the new operating rules. All meals presented in a much more aesthetically pleasing way than if I had helped myself to the buffet.

My praise for all that is East Winds has always been effusive and each visit has been better than the last. This continues to be the case after the edition of the bouncing, fun filled Coco, the dog found and rescued by chef Tadej.

It was wonderful to be at East Winds again, and if you are vacillating about visiting this year, do it as soon as you can.
We breezed through Gatwick on our way back, landed 8.00, in our taxi 8.45. There has never been an easier time to travel. While the stupid red, amber, green travel system is in place it looks likely that quarantine rules will soon be lifted for all who have had two vaccinations.

Thanks and good luck to all of the staff many of whom we are proud to call friends.

See you next year

Hi Simon, Thanks for reviewing us, after such a long year of closure it has taken a while to get back into the swing of writing replies to our reviews! It was great to see you all and the hotel was generally quieter after you left, nothing to do with the occupancy!! Cocoa enjoyed the opportunity to socialize with you and missed the cuddles after you left! As always, it was a great visit, the whole team were so delighted to welcome you back and we are looking forward to helping you celebrate your special birthday next year. It is impossible to fault anything about this fantastic stay. Initially reticent about a small, boutique hotel, I was totally bowled over by the East Winds. Our room was fabulous in one of the cottages. It was beautifully decorated on arrival and housekeeping was thorough daily with a well stocked minibar and coffee making facilities. Initially, I didn’t like the idea of going outside to make coffee but I grew to love the peace of the morning snd watching the birds. The gardens are beautiful and well worth walking around with Sylvanus, such a font of knowledge. I also did a nature walk with Simeon which was great if a little wet! Food and drinks are of exceptional quality with evening meal tasting menus and wine pairing. Chef Harry and Chef Linton do amazing meals and the cooking class is also good fun. Service is second to none snd it is hard to single people out but Silvia and Windel work very hard and laugh contagiously behind the bar. Miriam, Septima and Curlene always welcome you at breakfast and lunch and never forget your name of your dietary preferences. I did a few tours via Simeon - always good vibes and good value. I know we will return just not sure how soon but hopefully in the not too distant future.

My wife and I spent 7 days here in early March. It was our first stay here and our first visit to the Caribbean. This hotel had been recommended by friends in the UK and we had high expectations. We were not disappointed, it is a wonderful place to stay.

Unlike some of the large sprawling and frankly rather ugly hotel resort complexes in this area, East Winds is a discrete hotel made up of 30 individual “cottages” and one historic home (that used to be owned by the Horlicks family). The cottages are spread around in lovely landscaped gardens, some near the beach, others set further back in the grounds.

There is one restaurant building with 2 bars, where all meals are served. Breakfast and lunch is buffet and dinner is a 4 course a la carte experience. The food is truly wonderful, extensive choice, fresh and the dinner menu changes every day. There is also a good choice of wine. Some lunches and one dinner per week are barbecue cooked.

What makes this place truly special though, is the staff. They are all so friendly and helpful. They are relaxed in style but work hard to make sure you don’t wait for anything. Many of them have worked here for many years and are clearly well looked after and love their jobs. There is a foundation, which you can support if you wish, to provide assistance for the cost of educating their children. Education is very expensive in St Lucia.

There is a daily schedule of activities to choose from including tours to other parts of the island, boat tips, nature walks, cookery classes and shopping trips. There is also complimentary Yoga and Pilates twice a week

Many of the guests that we met at East Winds had stayed here multiple times and you can see why.

If you’re looking for lots of action this is not a place to stay, but if you like to stay in small, exclusive and individual hotels, with the highest level of service, good food and a relaxed, informal atmosphere, this is the place to come.

Wonderful small personal resort (max 30 rooms) Words that best describe it…..quiet, relaxing, private cabins with individual patios with great views of there awesome garden/landscaping. (Flowers everywhere)
All alcohol, drinks and food and water equipment are included.
4 course dinner with live music every night.
Staff are SUPER accommodating and friendly!!
Interested in their gardens …the head gardener will give you a private tour. Catch fish on an outing…..the cook with prepare it for you.
They really make you feel welcomed and will take care of all your travel needs and site seeing trips.
Ask for a taxi, a private driver in a Lexus will take you where you need to go.

We only left the resort on two day trips….the rest of the week we just relaxed.

Accommodations 5 stars ⭐️ s
Staff 5 ⭐️ S
Food 4 stars ⭐️
(But they can adjust all meals to your needs/ allergies)
Kid friendly 3 ⭐️ s (It’s best for adults wanting a quiet getaway). They Don’t have water slides or jet skis or loud group games that other larger resorts have. They Do have paddle boards, kayaks, sailing, and snorkeling right off the beach.

Trip number 3 to this amazing hotel. It has all been said before in other reviews and all is true. It was well worth all the paperwork, testing, long flights and what seems like an endless car transfer to be welcomed so warmly. How the staff work all day and night in masks (especially in the kitchen) i do not know. Certainly felt a lot safer from Covid compared to popping to our local shops! Plenty of hand sanitisers, temperature checks, insect repellent in the room and social distancing in public areas.

As said, all the staff are wonderful, friendly and helpful. Special thanks to Selma and Miriam, we really miss your fun and laughter. Also, we would like to especially thank Jennell so much for coming to our rescue on our arrival.

Food is still wonderful despite the changes to the dining arrangements caused by Covid. Did not miss out on anything and the BBQ fish and lobster were very much enjoyed!

Peace and tranquility in beautiful gardens with tropical birds to entertain you while sitting on your veranda enjoying a drink or just a mug of coffee. What's not to like!! Cannot wait for episode 4..

Best wishes to all (sorry we missed you Judith) Martin & Ann

The system for tipping has changed. Last year we left cash in an envelope at reception. This year we added a gratuity to our final invoice (which covered transfers and excursions). Therebis a refreshing lack of expectation for tips, so you don't get the ugly attitudes you find elsewhere when the staff just give the impression that they're angling for tips. Here the staff, all the staff, come across as genuinely friendly.

The connecting Deluxe cottages are sold as 2-bedroom cottages. There are 3 sets that are connected from the patio. It is possible to request a room without a door.
