#2 of 6 hotels in Isla de Vieques
Travelers' Choice
GreenLeaders Gold level
Vieques’ Hacienda Tamarindo offers 17 very special rooms, each lovingly and creatively designed and decorated by owner, Linda Vail -- her swan song after over 20 years as a commercial interior designer. Each guest room and public space is unique; imaginatively spiced with a lifetime’s accumulation of art, antiques, and collectibles. An ancient Tamarind tree in the lobby atrium majestically rises three stories through the center of the building. Terraces, courtyards, and sitting rooms offer ample space for relaxation and conversation. The Hacienda is perched on a hilltop with spectacular 180 degree views of the Caribbean -- from sunrise to sunset; looking down on the bedazzling, ever-changing myriad of blue, emerald and turquoise waters. Caribbean trade winds and lazy paddle fans keep you cool and comfortable. Here, you can fall asleep to a tree frog serenade and awake to the smell of jasmine on the gentle sea breeze.

We enjoyed our stay there very much. Everything is as pictured, only better. We enjoyed the delicious and varied breakfasts, the beautiful pool overlooking the bucolic fields that open onto the Caribbean, and the proximity to the little town of Esperanza. The owner/hosts were helpful and informative and completely unobtrusive. The staff of the inn were friendly and professional. We stayed in room #21 which was large, clean and had the most comfortable bed ever. My only not completely positive comment is that this room opens out to the lovely breakfast area and in the morning it is a bit noisy. I solved my issue with earplugs but my husband slept through it all. There is also a shuttered window at the head of the bed through which you can hear conversations on the stairs leading up to the second floor perfectly. It’s a little disconcerting but not really a big deal. Even if I got this room again, I would happily stay at Hacienda Tamarindo. A true 9.5 out of 10!

This was our second visit to Hacienda Tamarindo and we booked our third visit before we left. The staff and owners are so friendly and accommodating. I wanted to share a few tips if you plan on staying on Vieques. Book direct if you can because the Hacienda Tamarindo staff will help you get the best deals for booking tours and reserving a Jeep. You will definitely need a Jeep to get to some of the best beaches on the island. Don’t get a scooter or golf cart. It may save money but will seriously limit the beaches you can explore. Absolutely worth the visit. I would live here if I could convince my wife ;)

This was our 7th trip to Hacienda Tamarindo and once again, we booked for next year before leaving. The setting is beautiful, on top of a hill, overlooking the ocean, the staff is extremely professional and courteous, the rooms are each unique and spotlessly clean, and the extensive, home-cooked breakfast sets you up for the rest of the day. The grounds are very well maintained. The staff and owners are very knowledgeable about the island, beaches, restaurants, and things to do. One helpful hint, be sure to book thru their website as they will help you with renting a car and other things you need to know before you arrive.

This was our first visit to Vieques and we stayed at Hacienda Tamarindo on the advice of some friends, who actually built a home on Vieques. Vieques is easy to get to from Boston, JetBlue to SJU and Cape-Air to VSQ. I sort of questioned myself on why I rented a Jeep, however I knew in a matter of minutes. Pulling onto the road leading to Hacienda Tamarindo I was impressed how well kept the physical building and grounds were considering what they experienced in the hurricane a few years ago. Check-in was effortless. Our room is a two bedroom suite, (2) with a small balcony overlooking the grounds and the Caribbean. The daily rate comes complete with a full breakfast, fresh and filling. At Breakfast we met the owners Linda and Burr Vail. They live on the property and invited us up to their unit for cocktails the first evening. The Vails put a lot of sweat and labor to bring back Hacienda back from a destructive hurricane and every inch has been repaired, repainted and or replaced. Hacienda is located outside the town of Esperanza, one of two towns on the island, easy to get to and quiet. We have been so impressed with the quality of the facility and the staff that we have already made reservations for 2021, when we will take the two-bedroom Casita on the property. This trip has been so memorable first, we found an Island in the Caribbean that is easy to get to, reasonably priced, a hotel that really feels like home and owners that feel Ike family, the good kind.

We enjoyed this hotel and everything about it. The staff was helpful and pleasant. The rooms and grounds were clean and well maintained. A view of the ocean from the bed. We were able to be near Esperanza, but away from noise. What a fabulous retreat-like space with a pool, and plenty of space to be at ease. Breakfast was lovely and we enjoyed each dish.
