Just left after a week-long stay at Coqui Del Mar with my partner. It was just as I imagined it would be based on the website, reviews, and a friend’s recommendation. We were looking for a queer/gay owned and friendly, social place to stay, and CdM fit the bill. The owners, Rob and Vianney, were the perfect hosts — there if you needed something but not intrusive, offering helpful recommendations and good conversation.

We were in La Fortaleza room (steam shower), and it was perfect for our needs. The queen bed is pushed up against a wall, so one person has to exit at the foot of the bed, but if you’re ok with that, it’s fine. The bed was firm and comfortable, linens good quality, and great pillows (and I’m picky). This is not a luxury resort, so please don’t expect perfection — some parts of the room and property are funky — but as long as the mattress and pillows are good, I’m good.

The delicious, strong coffee every morning was greatly appreciated, and the communal fridge is a nice touch (check here before shopping — and take the communal shopping bags with you to reduce waste and a 10 cent charge at the store). Also appreciated were the beach chairs, coolers of various sizes, beach towels, the hot tub, the bikes (which we didn’t use), the mango tree, the gas grill, and all the little sitting areas throughout the property. I’m also a sucker for an outdoor shower, and theirs became my regular showering choice. We took advantage of the clothing optional area and were happy this was a feature of the property.

We ended up renting a car (which I would highly recommend), and were always able to park in front of the property on the street. A car gave us easier access to points further out, but Ubering is easy and inexpensive. The location of the guesthouse is convenient, though the immediate area is very residential.

Lastly, we also appreciated the diversity of the clientele. It attracts an interesting cross section of people, and it was nice meeting and hanging out with fellow guests. We made friends, for sure.

All in all, it was just what we wanted, and we will absolutely stay there again. Can’t wait till next time!

Just finishing up a short stay here and in all my 25+ years of traveling the globe, this is seriously my favorite guest house. I really can't write enough good things about it, though I'll try to write some.

First, the owners are great. Super friendly and helpful. They've got a great property here, the outside especially is really nice, there's just something interesting in every little nook and cranny for decoration. The pools are very small but perfectly adequate if you want a quick dip to cool off, and there's a hot tub too. Plus bikes, boogie boards, beach chairs, lots of stuff to borrow.

I was staying in El Taino, the smallest room, as I was just by myself and the room is great! What impressed me most is the little attention to details. There's guides up to explain how to work the Roku TV remote and the AC remote, for example, and a laminated guide to the area. They mentioned that the glass-enclosed shower is in the room, but now there's a shower curtain in case a couple is staying and doesn't want to shower in full view. There's a safe, an electric bug swatter (haven't seen any bugs to try it on, but it's tropical here, there are bugs that sometimes crawl in I'm sure), a nice umbrella to borrow, a bottle opener, dishes in the kitchen, hairdryer, iron and board, luggage rack, a clothes rod with hangers, a bookcase for storage, it's just a great little room, I love it.

I'm here with a bunch of friends who are traveling together but rooming solo, and we are scattered throughout the city. Everyone is jealous of my place, and I think I paid the least for it. The Old Town people are jealous of the beach proximity and the grounds with pools and hot tubs. The other Ocean Beach AirBnB people are jealous that there are other guests around and that the owners are on-site and so nice, and that they can hold my luggage on my last day while they're stuck figuring out what to do with theirs for the three hours they have before we're boarding our cruise ship.

Anyway, end of review. This place is great. You should book it. Seriously.

This is a very well run guest house located in a quiet location of the Ocean Park area. They have a lot of local colorful art and historical photos throughout the hotel. You are NOT surrounded by high rises and the beautiful beach is a 3 minute walk of 2 blocks away. Lot of small restaurants within walking distance. Also, the nearby Barbosa park has a running track with public restrooms and is right across the street from the beach. They provide boogie boards and other beach equipment to use. The cat would visit every morning to make sure everything was fine. I would stay at this place again.

Coqui del mar is a nice property conviently located to everything and Rob is a fantastic host. I think the are really trying their hardest. They have a great chef Alexi and a beautiful house pup Coquito. This was our experience... I will say for the same price you can get newly painted and remodeled rooms, and a more consistent level of service...

We came into PR for 10 days to tour the island. We wanted to flank our stay at the coqui del mar in hopes of meeting new and interesting people along the way. Upon arrival, we were walked into a room (our room) that someone else was being allowed to stay in, so we had to postpone an already late check in while they cleaned the room, etc. There is no respect for the quiet hours, and no enforcement either. If you are looking for a place to get away for a little rest and relaxation, this isn't it. All of the guests were laughing the first Sunday because we went from listening to the song "to the class of 1999 on repeat to gospel" it almost became comical - almost. The next weekend we were able to check in seemlessly, but the room had not been cleaned as a toothbrush we had left in the cabinet WAS STILL IN THE CABINET. The next weekend was much better and the crowd was better as well.

Most concerning to the group I was with, was staff was not diligent about wearing masks, did not ask us to show proof of vaccination, and do not enforce the masks in communal areas, so if you are concerned about covid, you might want to keep those things in mind. 15 people waiting for a brunch that is only served 1 hour in a room that is 12x12 doesnt make for the safest environement.

I will say again their cook Alexi was the best part of the trip by far. He made wonderful and healthy breakfasts every day. Also bring your own coffee, because the coffee service is NEVER on time, which was a huge dissapointment for someone who loves to watch the sunrise.

Brian, Sorry that your experience at Coqui del Mar was not the five-star experience that we are accustomed to providing. For the first weekend you visited, inclement weather forced us to abruptly move brunch indoors. We are now actively working to provide additional covered outdoor and indoor brunch opportunities to protect the health and safety of our guests. We apologize for the late-night noise experienced in your room during the weekend. We have quiet hours posted, but understand that a better effort is required to shield our guests in the Tropical Cabana suite, which is located close to our second swimming pool. We are really sorry that the coffee service wasn’t available at sunrise during your stay. A technical malfunction with our coffee machine has since been resolved, and we are once again able to provide strong, full, 100% Puerto Rican coffee early every morning. Regarding the music selection, we’re truly sorry and understand that Dolly Parton — much as we love her — might need a better explanation for some of our brunch guests. We believe cleanliness is the most important part of hospitality and our normal standards were not met. I've met with our cleaning staff and do not expect this oversight again. As of August 16th, Puerto Rico requires all guests and employees of hotels to be vaccinated for COVID-19, and there are additional requirements for staff to wear masks. We’ve implemented new policies and procedures to ensure these mandates are practiced for the foreseeable future. Thank you for acknowledging Alexis - he loves what he does and we are lucky to have him. We always provide at least 2 vegan options and always a tropical/Puerto Rican touch. And of course, the unlimited mimosa brunch included. On behalf of the staff and team at Coqui del Mar, I would like to extend a warm welcome to come back and give us another opportunity to demonstrate our personal 5-star hospitality.

Coqui Del Mar is a super cute and friendly guest house. The attention to details in the way it is decorated, the common kitchen with freshly brewed coffee every morning, the 2 pools and jacuzzi allowing for great relaxing times, the proximity to Ocean Park for some beach farniente and to la Placita for authentic dancing vibes, everything is perfect! Plus, if you want to venture further, Uber rides are super cheap (the trip to old San Juan cost us $5 for instance).
Crowning it all, the owners are adorable. Vianney was super accommodating with our early arrival/late departure plans. He was also a great source of advice about Puerto-Rico in general : day-trips, beach, food, nightlife, and even how to stay safe in Corona-times!
We'll be back!!

One of the best things about Coqui Del Mar is the host .He goes out of his way to make sure everything is perfect for his guests. Coqui Del Mar is cozy with a wonderful Caribbean flare in a peaceful setting of pools and courtyards.

It is within walking distance from the a beach and just an Uber ride away from Old San Juan.

The host is knowledgeable about attractions in the area and will help you find an activity that suits your interests. There is free morning coffee which is very good and free sangria on Saturday!

There is a clothing optional pool but it seems like everyone who used it wear a bathing suit. Another small pool requires bathing suits and there is also a nice hot tub.

My daughter and I would definitely return to Coqui Del Mar.

Coqui del Mar is a beautiful place just a couple of blocks from Ocean Park Beach. The room me and my friend stayed in was spacious and nicely designed, giving the impression of being very personal. It was equipped with a kitchen although we did not use that, as they are serving fresh and strong coffee in the common outdoor area. There are two swimming pools and one jacuzzi, lots of outdoor seating (hammocks, café style chairs, sunbeds etc) and a beautiful garden with mango trees and what-have-you (not a garden expert here, sorry, but it was really something special).

The owners are super duper friendly and helpful, and cool to hang out with! They really made us feel like home.

Should also mention that this is a highly sustainable guest house with solar panels, plenty of bikes to use for free, green spaces etc.

Coqui del Mar has my warmest recommendations - will definitely come back!

First, the good things. A nice welcome basket of snacks was provided after we arrived. There's a tasty brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. There's a fridge where you can purchase alcohol instead of running out to a liquor store. There are bikes for guests to use to get around. The staff sends helpful text messages about what is going on around town each day as well. All of those were nice services to have during our stay. All the other guests who were there, seemed to love it. That was not our experience.

The main complaint is that very little attention is being paid to the upkeep of this place.

Everything was dirty. . .from the sand, twigs, and dirt in the milky-water hot tub, to the common-area fridge, to the walkways that should be sprayed down so your feet don't get filthy/muddy walking around the property.

The small (and cold) plunge pool is surrounded by so much furniture, that it leaves very little room to navigate around the pool area, especially if there are people gathering. We didn't find it comfortable at all and spent our days at the beach instead.

Nobody seems to be tending to the plant life, which is plentiful on the property, but most of which is either dead, dying, or neglected as if it is a detail not worth caring about.

Similarly, the flags, curtains and drapes all around the property are faded, weathered and torn as if nobody cares about them either. It shows a lack of upkeep and care.

There's a beautiful mango tree in the yard, and the staff is not picking the fruit off it. On two occasions we were almost hit by falling mangos while sitting near the tree. We asked the staff about falling mangoes, but were flippantly told that it wouldn't really hurt if we got hit by one. (We also wondered why they weren't being picked and used for brunch?)

Our room was basic and we're very glad we didn't pay for one of the more expensive rooms. At the prices they are charging at Coqui Del Mar, they can afford to provide quality, matching towels or matching dishes or anything that hints at cohesion in this place. The quality of the furniture, linens, dishes, etc. is like somebody went to the Marshall's clearance aisle.

We grabbed a couple bikes to ride to the store one day, but got outside the gate and then realized one had a flat tire. We went back inside the gate, back to the hotel, and got a different bike. But this goes back to my point about the lack of upkeep at Coqui Del Mar.

We travel a lot and stay everywhere: campgrounds, Inns, BnB's, and nice resorts. Coqui Del Mar feels more like an expensive hostel than a gay resort. If you're looking for a similar experience to the clothing optional hotels in Palm Springs, Fort Lauderdale, Key West, etc., you should adjust your expectations.

Thank you Ridney for taking the time to leave us a review. We're sorry your experience with us failed to meet your expectations. Even tho we do not advertise ourselves as a 5-star hotel or resort, we are always trying to find ways to improve and offer a better experience to our guests and we can see that we let you down. Our prices can fluctuate greatly and in high season prices can be much different than in our low season, but very competitive to other options in the area. We appreciate your comments on what was lacking and what we could do better. And we agree that a few areas were not meeting our goals of a premier gay guesthouse experience. You'll be happy to know that we ordered a newer, larger jacuzzi with a bigger filter prior to your stay, but it takes a while to get things delivered (Jones Act). It's coming soon! We also are building a roof protection over the jacuzzi to avoid the mangos, leaves, mango flowers, etc from overwhelming the jacuzzi. We are also very happy to have found a passionate gardener that can help us keep the tropical life looking its best. (He also teaches Naked Yoga so that's a nice plus). You must have arrived at the beginning of Mango season but we are definitely pointedly using fresh mangos in our daily breakfasts and brunches (mango smoothies, mango salads, etc). On our vacations we go out of our way to stay at gay-owned properties, partly to learn what can be adapted to our own place, and partly because we enjoy the smaller, more intimate experience offered, plus to support queer-owned businesses. We are constantly working to improve the guest experience. At the same time, we are not a boutique hotel nor a high-end resort. We offer a more personal experience with many free extras and will continue to tweak and refine this. Again, thank you for pointing out some of the areas where we are falling short and for pointing out those areas you enjoyed (the welcome baskets, free vegan-friendly breakfasts, and brunches, the up-to-date queer info, etc). Our entire team is disappointed whenever we disappoint our guests and we all are on board to do better.

My husband usually doesn’t pick where we stay, almost 98% I’m the one lol 😆 . To my surprise he actually did a great job choosing the guest House, I really enjoyed our stay here. The owner was extremely helpful and gave us so many tips regarding the area, restaurant, hotel amenities, etc. The room we booked wasn’t available but we got an upgrade to a 3 bedroom apartment which I thought was massive, especially if you come with a group it's ideal. I was very surprised with so many perks they offered us including beach chairs, bike, umbrella, 2 pools, jacuzzi, free coffee, and other stuff. Only one single observation was that the apartment window have some kind of plastic, I’m guessing to about mosquitos to get in but that keeps the apartment very hot, specially with PR high temperature. We didn’t want to turn on the AC at the living room to safe some energy but maybe install none plastic window screen would cool off the apartment heat. Other than this great place to stay, highly recommend.

My niece and I stayed here for a week for our annual island get away trip. Without doubt, the hospitality of the owners, Rob and V, was the best we have ever had.
They are truly invested in ensuring that each guest is enjoying their stay, and go out of their way to accommodate any reasonable request.
Our 1 bedroom unit had everything we needed, and the welcome basket in the room upon arrival was spot on, they really think of everything.
They schedule fun events throughout the week, offer free brunch and even free Tacos on taco Tuesday!
The hotel is conveniently located just a 3 minute walk to the beach, and a lovely 15 minute stroll along the beach brings you to several restaurants.
I also have to mention the hotel mascot, Coquita, the sweetest dog you'll ever encounter. She really stole our hearts.
I am a single woman who sometimes travels alone, and hands down, this is the perfect place for that. You are certain to make fast friends with, not only the owners, but also with the other guests. Everyone was kind, inclusive and a lot of fun.
If you're thinking of booking, just do it, you won't regret it

There are a few, we had the Red Room, it was near the area where they make breakfast. We didn't have any issues with noise. The room is small, but comfortable, complete with 'toys' (we didn't tie each other to the cross, but it was there if the mood strikes). It does have a Bidet as part of the toilet, which we did use. The red room does have an in-room bath.

Hello. As our check out time is 11am and then we need a few hours to properly clean and prepare the room, our check in time is 3pm. Even so, if the room is ready early guests are welcome to it at that time, even 7am. You would just need to check with us the night before. Lastly, we always accommodate luggage drop off. Thank you.
