The hotel has really gone down hill since we last visited. The room is very worn and is in desperate need of updating. Most restaurants have minimal staffing leading to very long delays and many of them are only open on the weekends. I used to love this hotel, but we will be staying elsewhere next time we visit PR.

Anyone who believes they had a 5 star experience at this hotel, has never been to a real 5 star hotel. Based on the grounds alone, this hotel is not 5 stars. But the service makes it that much worse. I have been to 2 star hotels with 5 star service. And then theres Condado Vanderbilt. A so called “5 star” hotel with 2 star service. The only positive things I have to say about my stay here, should be a given standard at any hotel regardless of rating. So I’ll start with the positive. Fairly easy check-in, although a long line. We were upgraded to a room with a balcony (I believe they called it a suite). The rooms had a coffee machine, water, fridge, nice shower, iron and hair dryer. That’s it. I’m done. Now for the negative. First off the upgraded room was absolutely tiny. If that was a suite, I don’t want to imagine what I had originally booked myself for. The air conditioning only reaches 68 degrees minimum. They justify this by claiming they are eco friendly. For the money spent on staying at this hotel, I expect to be able to sleep in a comfortable temperature. But as a matter of fact, the room was actually warmer at night than during the day. I woke up in sweat two nights of my stay and I didn’t even hear the AC come on most the night although it was set to 68. Onto house keeping. It took us 3 days of arriving mid afternoon to a dirty room and calling for our room to be turned over until we finally found a button on the wall that needs to be pressed for service. Firstly if we needed to call for house keeping, don’t you think we should have been informed of that upon check in?! Secondly at a 5 star hotel, house keeping DAILY should be a given. STOP BLAMING COVID. Who wants to return to a dirty room ESPECIALLY during a pandemic?!? Now for the worst part; the pool. Imagine booking a hotel based on being drawn to the online images of the outdoor space, and it ends of being your worst experience. As others mentioned, many of the guests at the pool were classless and rowdy. Most of the pool staff was unhelpful and kept you waiting for towels, while the security asked me to put my mask on while I was OUTSIDE applying lotion, huhhh?! The biggest nightmare was the fight for lounge chairs. The first day we arrived all the chairs surrounding the pool were taken so we were subjected to a seat on the side of the hotel facing the ocean AKA the wind tunnel. When I say WINDY I mean umbrellas falling over, towels flying, hair blowing in all directions, can barely keep my eyes open WINDY. I decided the next day to do what everyone else seemed to do. I reserved two chairs bright and early on the side that faces the pool, placed my belongings on them, and went to have breakfast/ take a walk on the beach. When I came back, to my DISMAY, another couple is in my chairs and my stuff is GONE. I approached a pool server and was told that there is a 45 minute policy and my stuff can be collected at the lost and found. I’m sorry WHAT?! So not only is there apparently a policy in place that no one informed me of, but this policy only applies to SOME people. Considering just the day before, EVERY seat had towels on them yet there were not nearly half the amount of people in the area to match those towels. Hell, had I known about that “ policy” the day before, I would have moved those towels myself. But how dare they touch my belongings and place them in a lost and found as if they didn’t deliberately take them without any sort of notification that there was any sort of policy. Disgraceful!! And for the cherry on top of my pool experience... Can you imagine ordering a “double shot” of liquor in a cocktail due to the drinks being so incredibly weak, and then being charger DOUBLE THE PRICE. Yes let me say that again. They claim to use 1.25 ounce rum in a $12 piña colada and they had the audacity to charge us $24 for that same size piña colada with 2.5 ounces of rum! If anyone is confused, they literally charged me the $12 cost of an entire second drink, just for an additional 1.25 ounces of rum! The worst part is when we nicely approached the pool manager about it, he insisted that the price was indeed correct. The way the management handled the whole situation was disgusting. I expected more understanding and respect after already having spent so much at this hotel. We refused to pay the bill as is, and waited until check out to review our final bills. That is when we saw that the chargers were changed to $16 per drink instead of $24, which is exactly what the reasonable cost should have been in the first place. So instead of taking the time to acknowledge this error face to face, they chose to argue and refuse to make adjustments to our face, then change the cost behind our backs just in time for check out. So outrageously immature, unprofessional and ridiculous. I can’t tell you if there is a better hotel in the area to stay at, all I can tell you is that you will not be getting a 5 star experience and you will have a stressful vacation if you do choose to stay here. As a matter of fact, I advise avoiding San Juan all together, and head to Aruba instead!

Yesterday we left our new Happy Place, the Condado Vanderbilt. We had a wonderful time and can’t wait until our next visit. The hotel is beautiful. Due to COVID restrictions, capacity wasn’t full. It’s evident that COVID has taken its toll with curfews, long(ish) lines and spotty staffing in the city. Therefore, reservations were tough - even though we were guests. We can’t wait to be back and sit in some of the hotel’s beautiful areas with music and a lively crowd. The architecture is exquisite. The rooms are immaculately clean and very comfortable. The sliding glass doors are sound proof, ensuring restful sleep each evening. Amazing housekeeping service and fabulous shower. We didn’t have an ocean view but very much enjoyed the flavors and colors of San Juan from our City View balcony. The pool area is simply gorgeous with stunning views of the rock formations and ocean. We especially loved the infinity pool. The pool staff were on their game and took no time at all to know us personally, making sure we were comfortable and had what we needed at all times. A few shout outs here: Francisco and Derek - thank you for all your help finding a SIM card. Michael - bless you for finding our wallet and making sure it got back to us safely! Mai Lei and Manuel- you rock the pool bar! Darius - you are so helpful and we appreciated your pointers for making the most of our stay Christel - thanks for making us comfortable at the beach! All in all, we had a fabulous week and were sad to go. We’ll be back! Hot tip for new visitors to the area; Internet is spotty so bring a T-Mobile SIM card and you should be good to go.
