Our Tacos and Tequila waiter Gabriel gave us the best recommendations (Esquites are to die for) and the best service. Must eat restaurant! The jalapeño margarita and sweet potatoes and mushrooms were amazing. The best meal I’ve had in Puerto Rico!

Hotel's Favorite
High-rise hotels and condos line many famous beaches, competing in a search for the finest views of the sea. Not all views can be equally as good. Buildings have sides. All sides can’t face the right direction. And not all floors can be high. But many travelers want a view. Some are willing to pay for it. Hoteliers know that. A few travelers don’t want just any view. The want the best view. What is “the best view?” It’s subjective, of course, but in San Juan, a quest for best view begins by realizing you won’t be staying in the old city. As intriguing as that maze of narrow streets, centuries-old buildings and massive forts may be, it doesn’t offer many possibilities for great sea views. So we move down the coast to relatively upscale Condado. There you’ll find the high-rise hotels most apt to compete for the coveted best views. The informal guides to San Juan seem to have settled on these criteria: higher is better. Full view of the sea is better. And… if possible, full view of both the sea and lagoon is best. That room is going to be hard to find. Rooms facing the sea can’t face the lagoon—unless they are on a corner. Rooms in the hotels moving toward the Isla Verde area can’t face the lagoon—because it’s not there. In fact, probably only a couple hotels really can offer the nec plus ultra. One of them is Condado Vanderbilt. Question: should you book a room there, and if so, which? The hotel is possibly most famous beachfront property for luxury, as it conserves the opulent encrustations of what a century ago was a tycoon's beach house. That legacy is still part of the hotel. Well, sort of, though chances are you won’t be actually staying in the original mansion. You’ll be staying in an added modern tower. But for the view that’s where you want to be anyway. The rooms on the corners have the best views, and arguably the best of those are toward the top. We stayed in Room 1210, the top floor. It would be hard to find a better view in Puerto Rico, and with two balconies you can sit out and watch either the beach walkers on the sea or the kayakers on the lagoon. Condado Vanderbilt features its own beach chairs, multiple restaurants, pools and poolside drinks. At a price, the price being $32 for two Mojitos, plus tip. Alternatively, a walk down Ashford Avenue past the hotel can bring you to a variety of perfectly respectable Puerto Rican restaurants. But no pool. Any downside to this five-star hotel? In service and efficiency, no. It has everything. Solicitous staff make you wonder if maybe you were mistaken for some movie star? You’ll feel like a Vanderbilt for a day, maybe. But fancy comes at a price. Our room cost $591.41 a night on a weekday, taxes included. But the view!

Visit Tacos & Tequila - Gabriel was fabulous and provided spot on recommendations. I swear they put crack in the Esquites it was so unbelievably delicious. Also try the Sweet Potato & Mushroom taco; I’m not a vegetarian and it is still one of the best tacos I’ve ever tasted.

This is my second time staying at the Condado Vanderbilt and it was just as magical as the first time! We'll be back again and again. Everything was perfect - the room, the food/restaurants/bars, the service and the amenities exceeded all expectations. One thing I love about the hotel is the endless options for relaxation and lounge areas all around the property, varying from overlooking the ocean, to poolside, to amazing cabana options, to being able to dip your toes right in the water while on your lounge chair. The staff were all exceptional: professional, courteous, helpful and beyond nice - especially Juancarlo, he is simply the BEST and went the extra mile to make our stay amazing and enjoyable, from restaurant recommendations, booking activities around San Juan and making sure we have everything we need within the hotel. Other standout staff were: Michael, Manuel, Alberto and Nichol!!! The first time we stayed here a year ago it was just my husband and I; this time we brought our two kids - both times were truly spectacular.

What a terrific stay! I had a great room with ocean views, it was cleaned well each day and was hard to fault. The bar staff were very friendly and loved a chat, especially during the quiet times mid-week. A big thanks to really all the staff in this hotel for their great service and helping make my stay a memorable one specially Eunice at Concierge with her great recommendations and Raul and Manuel from the pool for there unique attention to detail. Excellent price quality balance, really hope to be back next year.

From day 1 we felt really welcome in the resort. Everybody was very friendly. Great views and amazing service was the norm here. Manuel who works at the pool really made our experience a whole lot better. The only thing that could be better, was the food. The quality of the food was not that good. The only restaurants of which we thought were great was 1919 and STK. We definitely recommend this resort to everybody, young and old.

Our first time to San Juan did not disappoint. The Condado Vanderbilt was the perfect location for sightseeing and pleasure seeking. The suite was spacious with the best bedding, better if possible than the “heavenly bed.” Loved the in room coffee and snacks. Staff make you feel special which added to the ambiance. Outstanding staff were Juancarlo at the front office, Diego on the beach and Nichol in the VC Lounge. We will be back!

Service at the pool was great! Lito was a great server! Very attentive, helpful and fun to have serve us. She gave us great recommendations of local places to visit and things to do. If you come to the Vanderbilt make sure to ask for Lito at the pool side Mojito bar!

The hotel is excellent. Very nice rooms, most with excellent ocean or partial ocean views. The restaurants are excellent. The lobby bar is very large serving tasty drinks. The location is good and feels safe. The beach is small but it's there if you need it. Pools and pool bar are very nice. I don't have children so it's nice that most of the hotel seems to be kid free while I was visiting.

Lito and Jerik were great! Beautiful atmosphere outside at the bar. Food was great and had a fun time at Sunday brunch. Good food and drink overlooking the ocean, a great place to unwind and just relax. Will be back for sure and looking forward to it!
