Detailed Reviews
El Canario by the Lagoon was an older, but very clean hotel. It was affordable, and it was located close to Ashford Avenue, which was the main street near the beaches and the restaurants. The breakfast consisted of foods, such as: toasts, muffins, cereals, and bananas. The staff lent beach towels and sunscreen to its guests. The room keys were real metal keys, and not plastic cards for one to swipe. There was a rooftop and a ground floor patio for the guests to enjoy. The rooms had terraces, wifi, and televisions, but the property had no gym nor pool. I had some brief issues with a few very loud guests who entered their rooms in the early morning hours, but I had no issues with any construction noises. Generally, the other guests were friendly individuals. As others have mentioned, I thought that the beds were not soft; yet, I had consistent room service every day. My room was not immediately ready at 3:00 PM when I was supposed to check in. I found most of the staff members to be friendly. I would recommend for this hotel to install a water cooler in the lobby, but this hotel was overall a very positive stay for me.

It's a pleasant experience when the hotel you booked is the hotel you expected. I value communications as being a good indicator of a good establishment and the El Canario was great in their communications and confirmation. The hotel itself was close to the beach, restaurants, and shopping (even a Walmart within a 15 min walk!). It was clean and the breakfast was an added value. The taxi cost to the hotel was around $22 and the Uber to the cruise terminal was only $6.50. And the hotel receptionist was exceptional (management ... give her a raise!).

Last time we stayed was 15 years ago. Little has changed. Older property located one block from the water. At $100 a night its about a third of the cost of the beachfront hotels. We rented two chairs ,umbrella, and towels from La Concha for $20. Our room was adequate size with a small balcony that had a view of the lagoon. It had a table ,two chairs, and fridge. No micro wave or coffee maker. Tiny bathroom with cheap amenities. Hotel has rooftop terrace with tables and great views. No one else used it the two nights we stayed. Continental breakfast was adequate but only fruit a banana. You can eat outside in a small garden. Lots of tropical ambiance. There is a pay washer/dryer. Computer/printer. No pool. Staff was outstanding. Couldn't do enough for us. Located in Condado section of San Juan. Numerous bars, restaurants, and stores within easy walking distance. No smoking property. Uber was readily available.

I checked in and had booked a queen balcony room with breakfast. I went to the room and found it was on level one next to the exit. When I went into the room the balcony was facing a cement wall and close to the sidewalk. I immediately went to the desk and told her I was traveling solo and didn’t feel safe so close to the street. She said we are booked!!! Next morning I went to look for the breakfast that was included in the price when I booked and was told they canceled breakfast for anyone that booked before the new owners bought it but I could buy it for 13.00! Really??? Then early evening the alarm kept going off and no one responded or did anything. I finally called the office on my cell phone to tell them it had been going off for around a half hour now. Hmmmm what if this had been a real issue and no response?? Water was luke warm for a shower? When I checked in she xeroxed my credit card on paper? How are these destroyed to protect my information? I asked her and she could't answer this question. There isn’t a deadbolt type lock on the door it is just the small one in the door knob. Told a friend that was going to stay here to find another place.

We apologize for any inconvenience you may have encountered. Your room was actually not on the street level but on our level 1 which is the second floor. We are so sorry we couldn't accommodate you as we were sold out on the day of your arrival. The situation with your breakfast should not have happened, and again we profusely apologize for the situation you encountered. It has been addressed with our personnel, as well as we have corrected the hot water as well. We can assure you our hotel is very safe. No unregistered guests are allowed in the hotel and we actually lock the front door at night. Also, we have a security guard also patrolling the whole hotel at night. Thank you for sharing your feedback as it gives us a chance to improve.

Our cruise ship came into port at 8:30 a.m. and the hotel was kind enough to allow us to store our luggage until check in at 3:00. The staff was very accommodating and the hotel is close to the beach - only about a block away as well as Ashford Avenue with tons of restaurants and shops. However, the rooms are a bit depressing. The walls are pretty bare, linoleum on the floor and the elevator was scary - sounds like you are going to get stuck in it by the way it groans. When I sat on the terrace I just overlooked concrete buildings and roofs. There is a nice little outside lobby with patio tables and umbrellas to sit at and a decent little breakfast room. Also be aware of the "coquis" - high pitched sounds by the tree frogs in the lagoon nearby. These are all over Puerto Rico but drove me bananas when I was trying to sleep! Finally i just tuned them out. The price here was less than the higher priced hotels nearby but you might want to spend the extra money for a cheerier room and stay right on the beach.

Dear Hiker0957, Thank you for choosing to stay with us and for sharing your experience. We're glad to hear that our staff was accommodating and that our location worked well for you with its proximity to the beach and nearby restaurants and shops. We're sorry to hear that the decor of our rooms didn't quite meet your expectations, and that you found the elevator to be a bit scary. We take these concerns seriously and will be looking into ways to improve the overall aesthetics and functionality of our property. Regarding the "coquis," we understand that the sound of the tree frogs in the nearby lagoon can be quite overwhelming, especially for those who are not accustomed to it. We'll certainly do our best to make our guests aware of this in the future, and we're glad to know that you were able to tune them out eventually. Thank you again for your feedback, and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future for a more enjoyable stay. Best regards, T. Cruz Guest Experience Manager Canario Lagoon Hotel

This hotel is up front about being a budget hotel surrounded by higher priced resorts, so my expectations weren't that high. Still, it was a pretty rough experience. Trying to sleep was a struggle with the comically loud AC unit in the room, and we had a room next to to the stairs and elevator, which banged loudly when people came in late at night. The room was constantly damp, and we had to keep the AC at 70 or below to keep the dampness at a tolerable level. I found myself wanting to be anywhere but in that room and wasted no time getting out in the morning. That being said, the beach club access was nice. The entry point at Condado beach was great, just beyond the pier, rocks, and heavy currents. The staff was also incredibly kind and attentive. I would say, if you can swing a pricier hotel in Condado, do it.

Greetings. We would like to sincerely apologize for your a/c being loud. It is necessary to keep a/c in the tropical weather and it is very common for humidity to seep in if the a/c is turned off. It is unfortunate that your room was not able to be changed as I know our personnel strives for all of our guests to have an excellent experience during their stay with us. We will use your review as training so that we can improve. Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback. We certainly appreciate it.

This hotel is very well located - it's across the street from the lagoon, a block away from a beautiful park and beach, and surrounded by shops and restaurants in a safe neighborhood. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. I definitely recommend it!

The hotel did not disclose in their description that it does not have beach access. The closest beach, which is a 5 minute walk from the building, has a very strong current and people are not allowed to get in. They also said in their description that they had a pool. It was very disappointing to find out that they do not have a pool on site, they have a sort of an agreement with another building so that the guest can use their pool. So you actually have to leave the hotel to go to another building to use the pool.
I booked a queen size bed, but the bed we got was a full. Very soft mattress which hurt our backs really bad. In general the room was very basic. And the bathroom sink was clogged.
The only thing I can positively highlight is that they have a breakfast station and the food was good. That was a nice surprise. Also, they had a mortal kombat arcade console for free, my husband loved it.
Regarding customer service, the staff was inflexible and refused to refund me for the first night that I could not use because the airline cancelled my flight due to weather conditions.
In summary I can say that for the price you pay this place was a rip off.
Lastly, we saw a roach in the lobby on our way out.

We sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding of being beach front. We do not advertise as being beach front, our guests do have access to a beach club which provides them with an umbrella and sun loungers. We take all of the feedback to heart. We want to make sure all of our guests have a top-notch experience at an affordable price. Again, we aplogize for the mishaps that happened during you stay. Be assured that they have already been addressed by the corresponding departments so that they do not happen to a future guest.

This hotel was very no frills - almost felt like staying in an old college dorm. But it was clean, comfortable, safe, and the hospitality from the front desk was top notch. Definitely a good option for a stopover or quick stay. We checked in very late (2am) and parked at The Parking at Condado lot and walked about 6 minutes to the hotel. It was a little hard to find in the dark with so much construction on the street, would’ve been easier to find in the morning.

This is an okay hotel, pretty light on amenities. Staff was friendly and courteous. No pool, though they allow you to borrow towels and bring them to the beaches that are within walking distance. Continental breakfast was poor.

Thank you for your honest review. We do not have a pool but yes, the beach is less than five minutes away walking. We strive to offer an economical option in a very central location close to the best beaches in San Juan, restaurants, casinos, bars, the Condado Lagoon, and so much more. We are sorry our continental breakfast did not meet your expectations. We add that small value to make the experience better. Stay safe always.
