El Canario Laguna is a great 3 star hotel. First time in Puerto Rico. I shared a room with my mother and it was everything I had hoped for. Staff were great, location was great, breakfast was great. Will definitely stay here next time. I read some reviews on google that made me have a little buyer's remorse but the hotel exceeded my expectations.
I will start with the most important reason for the low rating. The hotel is not clean. We had to wear shoes in our room because it had not been swept. The building next door is under construction and work starts at 7am sharp - no sleeping in if your balcony faces that side. Speaking of the balcony, when it rained, water came in from under the door. To help lessen the strong musty smell we had to keep the A/C super cold. There were mosquitos in the room both alive and smeared on the walls - see photos. The bed skirts have not been laundered in a long time. The hallways made me think of a mid-century sanitarium. I told the front desk there was a water leak going down the hall, so they put up a wet floor sign. As the the water continued to flow, the decided to toss a pile of towels on it. The breakfast area was treated by the exterminator during meal time...nope, not ok. Also the breakfast selections were sub-par, nothing fresh. Also they didn't turn on the A/C during the week. The lobby area is a hot mosquito playground. The side door to the courtyard is left open with a mosquito lamp inside the lobby, thus inviting them inside. Make sure stock up on what you may need. While the hotel had water and soda, the vending machines are out of order and appear to be so for quite some time. And they did not have laundry detergent as posted in the laundry area. I did a medium size load that took 2 cycles in the dryer totaling $6. Taking the elevator is a scary experience. If it comes when you push the button. It doesn't always stop evenly with the floor. So be prepared to step up or down when the door opens. And it stops with such a jolt that it actually loosened my hair clip. As stated, on their website, the pool pictured is not at the hotel. And the "beach club" is about 2 blocks away and is on the water, but the water is not accessible. It is for sunbathing only. The photo of the beach on their website, is not related to the beach club they offer. When we decided to take the long walk to the beach, they didn't have any beach towels available. I would not recommend this hotel, regardless of price.…
This hotel is up front about being a budget hotel surrounded by higher priced resorts, so my expectations weren't that high. Still, it was a pretty rough experience. Trying to sleep was a struggle with the comically loud AC unit in the room, and we had a room next to to the stairs and elevator, which banged loudly when people came in late at night. The room was constantly damp, and we had to keep the AC at 70 or below to keep the dampness at a tolerable level. I found myself wanting to be anywhere but in that room and wasted no time getting out in the morning. That being said, the beach club access was nice. The entry point at Condado beach was great, just beyond the pier, rocks, and heavy currents. The staff was also incredibly kind and attentive. I would say, if you can swing a pricier hotel in Condado, do it.…
The hotel did not disclose in their description that it does not have beach access. The closest beach, which is a 5 minute walk from the building, has a very strong current and people are not allowed to get in. They also said in their description that they had a pool. It was very disappointing to find out that they do not have a pool on site, they have a sort of an agreement with another building so that the guest can use their pool. So you actually have to leave the hotel to go to another building to use the pool. I booked a queen size bed, but the bed we got was a full. Very soft mattress which hurt our backs really bad. In general the room was very basic. And the bathroom sink was clogged. The only thing I can positively highlight is that they have a breakfast station and the food was good. That was a nice surprise. Also, they had a mortal kombat arcade console for free, my husband loved it. Regarding customer service, the staff was inflexible and refused to refund me for the first night that I could not use because the airline cancelled my flight due to weather conditions. In summary I can say that for the price you pay this place was a rip off. Lastly, we saw a roach in the lobby on our way out.…
I checked in and had booked a queen balcony room with breakfast. I went to the room and found it was on level one next to the exit. When I went into the room the balcony was facing a cement wall and close to the sidewalk. I immediately went to the desk and told her I was traveling solo and didn’t feel safe so close to the street. She said we are booked!!! Next morning I went to look for the breakfast that was included in the price when I booked and was told they canceled breakfast for anyone that booked before the new owners bought it but I could buy it for 13.00! Really??? Then early evening the alarm kept going off and no one responded or did anything. I finally called the office on my cell phone to tell them it had been going off for around a half hour now. Hmmmm what if this had been a real issue and no response?? Water was luke warm for a shower? When I checked in she xeroxed my credit card on paper? How are these destroyed to protect my information? I asked her and she could't answer this question. There isn’t a deadbolt type lock on the door it is just the small one in the door knob. Told a friend that was going to stay here to find another place.…
This is an okay hotel, pretty light on amenities. Staff was friendly and courteous. No pool, though they allow you to borrow towels and bring them to the beaches that are within walking distance. Continental breakfast was poor.
It's a pleasant experience when the hotel you booked is the hotel you expected. I value communications as being a good indicator of a good establishment and the El Canario was great in their communications and confirmation. The hotel itself was close to the beach, restaurants, and shopping (even a Walmart within a 15 min walk!). It was clean and the breakfast was an added value. The taxi cost to the hotel was around $22 and the Uber to the cruise terminal was only $6.50. And the hotel receptionist was exceptional (management ... give her a raise!).
My wife and I stayed here for two nights prior to going on a cruise. The hotel is very clean and simple. It cost us $11 to uber there from the airport. The location is great. Very short walk to the beach and numerous restaurants near by. The staff is very friendly and the hotel has a free continental breakfast in the morning. I will definitely stay there again next time I am visiting Puerto Rico. Uber was $8 into old an Juan and same amount for ride to the port. Overall a great two day stay.
We stayed there 2 weeks ago for 1 night before a cruise. As other reviewers said, small and older. And that's ok for us because the hotel was clean and in a safe area. Also the staff was very nice. A couple of blocks from the beach and a number of restaurants and bars. We had no problems walking around in the evening. I would stay there again.
Last time we stayed was 15 years ago. Little has changed. Older property located one block from the water. At $100 a night its about a third of the cost of the beachfront hotels. We rented two chairs ,umbrella, and towels from La Concha for $20. Our room was adequate size with a small balcony that had a view of the lagoon. It had a table ,two chairs, and fridge. No micro wave or coffee maker. Tiny bathroom with cheap amenities. Hotel has rooftop terrace with tables and great views. No one else used it the two nights we stayed. Continental breakfast was adequate but only fruit a banana. You can eat outside in a small garden. Lots of tropical ambiance. There is a pay washer/dryer. Computer/printer. No pool. Staff was outstanding. Couldn't do enough for us. Located in Condado section of San Juan. Numerous bars, restaurants, and stores within easy walking distance. No smoking property. Uber was readily available.…
