We arrived at our lodging The Gallery Inn, which sits at the corner of Norzagaray and San Justo Streets facing the ocean and overlooking the ramparts that connect Castillo de San Cristobal and Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Jan D’Esopo, the owner, had a vision and she has realized it. The Inn is a magical place, both Inn and Gallery, it meanders through what was once ruins. One never knows what delight awaits around the next corner or up a stair case. Statuary, fountains, and paintings abound, many Jan’s work. And, I would be remiss if I did not mention the beautiful parrots that call the Inn home. But, that is not all the Inn has to offer! The Cannon Club, home to the Steinway Society of Puerto Rico, boast not one but two grand pianos. The restaurant, bar, pool side patio all share the music played in the listening room. Our first night at the Inn was spent over an excellent dinner, drinks and the music of two young musicians, one on stand-up bass and the other on one of the grand pianos…again magical. The staff was very accommodating and helpful. As a former Innkeeper (10 years in New Orleans) I give them high praise.

If you are someone who loves culture and history, you must stay here. The staff is extremely welcoming. We stayed here after spending a night at a resort, and it was a breath of fresh air!!! The rooms and surrounding area are so beautiful and intricate. You don’t even have to leave and there’s plenty to explore. The rooftop has an amazing view of Old San Juan, and the patio bar area has a peaceful area to talk and enjoy drinks. The inside bar and restaurant is absolutely gorgeous, you must plan a stay around their music nights. We booked a table to be in the jazz room and it did not disappoint. (do not sit here if you’re planning on talking, it takes away from the experience, it’s small quarters so you need to be respectful to the artists) You're in the heart of Old San Juan so it's perfect for exploring. Will definitely come back!

We stayed here the last night of our trip and absolutely loved it! So unique and quirky with so many little hidden rooms to relax in. The stay was so friendly. We loved the history of the place and the area of town it’s in. The pool is small but the coolest I’ve ever seen. Also the rooftop has some of the best views in old San Juan.

I have enjoyed few hotels as much as the Gallery Inn. It's clear that the Gallery Inn is as much a passion project for and by the owners as it is a hotel. Every inch of the space has that sense of personality and aesthetic that clearly brought this entire place together. I suspect that for many guests that create a make-or-break experience. This hotel is a winding maze of narrow passages, winding staircases and hallways that seem to lead off into nothing. Statuary pokes out of the corners while lobby signage warns guests not that Campeche, one of the many resident parrots "Is a little devil. Do not let him step to you." For me and my wife, this made the Gallery Inn a wonderful experience. At any given time we had our pick of gardens and terraces to relax during the heat of the day. Our room was spacious and comfortable, with a view of the city street, and the poolside bar serves a spectacular gin cocktail. Still, the Gallery Inn will not be for everybody. This is an original colonial building, which makes for odd angles and low water pressure. The waterfront location makes for some of the best views in San Juan, but also one of the busiest roads and most popular bar scenes. Every room in this hotel is unique, which also means you won't entirely know what you're getting until arrival. These aren't tradeoffs that the owners can (or should) try to remedy. It's on guests to decide what will make for a more pleasant vacation, a view of the water over La Perla or a reliably quiet room. You can't have both. However that note of caution shouldn't be taken as criticism or complaint. In renovating this rambling colonial mansion the owners chose to keep the look and feel of an abandoned grotto. We felt like we were staying in a storybook and absolutely *loved* this hotel.

We adored Gallery Inn -- so unique, filled with art, music, tropical birds, cool rooms, plus a gorgeous pool, gardens, and rooftop with a 360-degree view of the whole city. This is a truly special place. All the rooms and unique, the owner is fabulous, and it's across from the ocean, plus walking distance to lots to eat, see and do. Would absolutely come stay again!
