I was there for a wedding. The hotel is well kept and clean. The room, Queen Superior, was large with a modernized bathroom but wooden balcony doors and windows could use some updating. Employees very friendly and professional. My only complaint was the internet. You had to go outside of your room to connect and then stay in the lobby or hallway to stay connected. If you went back into the room, you may/maynot remain connected. We ate in the restaurant in the lobby and the hamburgers needed seasoning, or at a minimum salt.

I’m sure there are a gazillion reviews of this hotel, with all kinds of opinions, but I will say, I love, love, love this place. I’m prejudiced towards historic venues, classic Spanish architecture, and antique ambiance- so take that as a starting point. Service for us was fine, check in was a breeze and we arrived late, well after 9:00 pm. The pool is small - just a dipping pool, and that too was fine, as we knew ahead of time not to expect a big pool. All we needed was basically relax and get wet after walking around Old San Juan all day. The views from the pool and the terrace, are beautiful. The architecture, the courtyard, the corridors, which are all open to the air, are just dripping with historic ambience. TheI location is perfect if you are a sightseer like ourselves. Atmosphere is quiet elegance, historic and calm, understated luxury, not over the top. We enjoyed the upstairs bar one evening, felt like we were with Hemingway in old Havana. We normally try to eat outside of our hotel to try new experiences, but we had lunch one day at one of the restaurants and it was very good.. We were 5 people, covering three generations, in two rooms. Everyone loved it.

The location in Old San Juan was excellent and made visiting Old San Juan very easy. The hotel staff was excellent from check in to check out and the room and bathroom were clean and considering the age of the building, a little larger than we expected. The two less than 5 star experiences were the quirky shower controls (shower is updated but control did not work at first) and the noise from surrounding rooms (construction inside hotel and conversations from interior courtyard). The construction is probably a short term issue but the interior courtyard disturbance may be more of an issue for light sleepers. There was an added door into our room which mitigated the noise, but guests need to be aware of the tradeoff between wonderful old structure in a great location with excellent staff and original architecture challenges. We would stay again at Hotel El Convento and would definitely consider ear plugs for sleeping.

Lots and lots of good, one bad. The good includes the joy of staying in this historical gem located in the middle of Old San Juan. The staff was very pleasant. No issues with billing like mentioned in other reviews. A wine and cheese hour in late afternoon we enjoyed. While the pool is small but we really enjoyed the pool deck which includes a hot tub which we used after hours of walking the streets of Old San Juan. We spent time reading on the pool deck in the mornings. Simply beautiful at that time of the day. The bad was bed size. It was a full bed (or double). Just too small for a premier hotel. The room is called Queen Vista but I failed to read fine print where this type of room can have a full size bed. Make sure you are getting a Queen size bed. This is easy fix for hotel of this stature. Remove the full beds and replace with Queens. Today! our room could fit a Queen easily. In fact the headboard was made for a dang Queen! Otherwise we loved our stay and will always remember it!

My first time in Puerto Rico, so we decided to visit Old San Juan....beautiful. We decided to wander into the courtyard of the Hotel El Convento for cocktails, and it was truly beautiful and peaceful. Our bartenders, Rene and Victor were top notch and very friendly (and attractive). They made us delicious mojitos and spoke with us about our little vacation and the surrounding area. They made us feel very comfortable. A wedding party showed up and they got very busy. I watched with a keen eye as I also have extensive bartending experience and both handled the large crowd expertly. They even spoke to the crowd and offered nearby seating away from the bar as my friend and I had already been at the bar and were now engulfed by a swarm of people. That was very kind of them. The only negative I can say was a female manager who was setting up the tables in the courtyard next to the bar. She looked very unfriendly and was loudly dragging chairs against the stone ground which created a very disturbing screeching sound. This went on for about 20 minutes. It would not have been an issue if she had carried the chairs like a normal adult would. She would also come over to the bar to shove empty glasses and bottles into the bartender's faces as they were talking with us and she never acknowledged us. She was very rude and needs better training. Aside from that, I would highly recommend drinks in the courtyard and I would be willing to give the place a try as a place to stay in the future. I would give 5 stars if it weren't for that rude manager. The bartenders and the beauty of the place certainly get 5 stars!

We paid close to $800 for two nights at the El Convento. They did not tell us that the hotel was being renovated at the time. They “upgraded” us to a suite (room 200), but the room had been denuded of most of the decorations, including lampshades (see pictures below); there were holes in the wall where fixtures had been removed; and panelling was peeling off the doors. The room had two bay windows that overlooked the walkway around the patio. That meant we had to keep the curtains closed at all times for privacy (it was essentially an inside cabin). The ice maker was broken (though the manager insisted it worked, it didn’t). Maid service was poor: when we asked for a second hand towel (there were two sinks in the bathroom) she left it sitting on top of a suitcase rather than making the few extra steps to put it by the sink. And we couldn’t get hot water in the shower either day. The room was spacious and the bed quite comfortable. But the room was worth about half the $774.60 we paid. When on the first day I pointed out the problems to the manager, Alfredo, and requested a rebate, his reply was essentially “uh huh.” He said he would normally offer us another room but there weren’t any available. Another couple with similar complaints was at the desk and was told the same thing (there were two weddings that weekend). At check-out, Alfredo asked us if our stay had improved (apparently they had repaired the ice maker). I again told him that our stay was not worth the high price I paid, and again I requested a rebate. Again his response was noncommital; he took no immediate action on my request, and I have not heard anything from the hotel since.

I stayed here a year ago and I’m still mad about it. When I saw all the reviews about how bad the cleanliness of the rooms was I debated canceling my booking, I didn’t and very much regretted it. I got to my room and there was hair and dirt everywhere, it clearly hasn’t been cleaned in weeks or longer, I even found someone’s body jewelry on the ground (ew). I complained to the front desk and she offered to show me a several other rooms. We went together and almost all of them were dirty, one of them had an UNFLUSHED toilet. I eventually picked the least dirty room. She apologized a bunch but didn’t even offer a free breakfast or drink for having to waste an hour of my time seeing 5 different dirty rooms and have to witness that toilet (EW) The room I picked had cockroaches running up the wall at night, hair everywhere, dead roaches in the shower, even a dead roach in the PICTURE FRAME in the bathroom. No one is actually cleaning this place and dust/ dirt is just piling up. I stayed three nights and never unpacked my suitcase because I didn’t want to touch anything. The only redeeming qualities are the roof which was nice and the location is perfect. But calling this place a four star luxury hotel is straight up a scam.

If you prefer historic properties to modern, chain hotels, Hotel El Convento fits the bill. The structure, the atmosphere, and the location were top notch. The hotel is within walking distance of everything in Old San Juan. The room itself was lovely as well, with plenty of character, and light-filled. We were a bit concerned being right next to the pool, but pool noise was not an issue. The staff were friendly and helpful. The only downside was that there was construction going on during the day, of course right at times when we wanted a bit of a siesta.
