Friendly, helpful staff and a great location in the heart of Old San Juan, across the street from a beautiful old cathedral and up the street from a port gateway in place since the 1600s. Hotel has the vibe of a very old historical building. Surprisingly good gym with dumbbells up to 50 pounds, excellent LifeFitness elliptical machines and treadmills, and a good Universal-type setup. Second-floor rooms have very high ceilings. Comfortable beds and great showers with lots of hot water. There is a coin-operated laundry on the second floor. Hotel has two good in-house restaurants, with a third connected to the hotel through the back (we didn't eat at that one and it seemed consistently empty). Pool on upper deck is small (ideal for no more than 3-4 people) but very nice, with powerful water jets. El Convento has an arrangement with a beachfront hotel about 30 minutes away by cab that gives guest free access to that beach. We would stay there again if we go back to Old San Juan.

Old Town San Juan is a gem of a place to visit if you like history, good food and shopping. The crown jewel is the Hotel Convento located in the middle of the area. The hotel has been completely remodeled , rooms are large and with a/c. The facilities are a 10, great restaurant and bar. Breakfast is suburb and ask for Kiara to be your server. She is fun and knowledgable. The hotel is located in from of the oldest church in the USA and a beautiful plaza

Excellent location but extremely noisy with service issues. The location in old San Juan can’t be beat, and the hotel has great bones. However, our experience was heavily marred by loud noise throughout the night from their wedding venue and guests enjoying the pool area adjoining our room at all hours. Service was also an issue with incredibly slow service in the dining room and lack of assistance in other areas typically expected at this price point (for instance, we didn’t see a valet upon arrival or bell staff to help with bags). Our queen vista room was fine, but not exactly decorated in a historical or luxurious manner, especially at the high price point we paid. We also had some mystery charges posted to our credit card after departure, which upon our inquiry, were promptly removed. Basically, we loved the location and historical aspect of the hotel, but the hotel fell short in terms of what typically offered at luxury hotels.

Service, Sleep, and Style are three things that distinguish a luxury hotel from others. Service includes such things as bell service, restaurant, and housekeeping. Sleep includes the comfort of the bed, quiet in the room, and the ability to maintain a good temperature for sleeping. Style is about interior design. Is the hotel’s design consistent with the image it wants to portray? Is that image consistent throughout the hotel, from the lobby to the rooms and restaurants. Hotel El Convento fell short on all three criteria. The bell service was outstanding. Staff took my luggage the moment I arrived and delivered it to my room. But both restaurants were extremely slow, each taking a minimum of 40 minutes from order to table. The first day housekeeping didn’t arrive until 4:10 PM when I was trying to nap after a day touring in the heat. The second day I put a sign requesting housekeeping when I left in the morning. That worked better. Regarding sleep, the hotel is noisy. The noise from the inner courtyard, the connecting room, and the vibrating refrigerator was abated, but not eliminated, by a double paned glass door installed at the end of the entry way to the room. The HVAC system ran at 55 decibels. No matter what the fan was set at (low, auto, med, high), it ran at the same high speed. It was quite difficult to sleep with all the roaring. The alternative was to sleep without air conditioning. A bit warm, but better than being kept awake by the fan. There was noise from the window starting at about 7:00 AM when the garbage trucks arrived and then again late in the afternoon from a patio on a lower floor. The bed was a queen size, which is okay, but in a luxury hotel one expects to have an option for a king. Popular chain hotels have more of a style than El Convento. The hotel is old, but there is no sense of its history. The room had a lot of modern furniture, but it did not tie in with the 350 year history of the building. The room appeared to be a mash-mash of budget furniture. You must use a key to get on the elevator for security reasons, which is good, so you can’t take stairs to the main floor because a gate locks off the guest rooms. It did make me wonder how I would escape in case of a fire. That being said, Hotel El Convento is a three star hotel in a prime location for those who want to tour Old San Juan. That is why I stayed there. It is overpriced for a hotel in a three-star category. But as long as there are people such as myself who book El Convento, the hotel will continue to call itself luxury and demand the higher prices. I’ve stayed in other hotels that are marketed through the Small Luxury Hotel group and this hotel is not up to the standard of the others I have stayed in. Make no mistake, it is fun to stay in the old town San Juan, just don’t expect a luxury experience at Hotel El Convento.

Good Morning Digital Rabbit, Thank you for staying with us and taking the time to share some of your observations. We are glad you enjoyed the location of the hotel as well as the service provided by our bell team. Our housekeeping service is provided from 9am to 5pm, after 5pm we provide turndown service. If housekeeping daily service can be accommodated at a specific at the guest's request. We will check the AC in your room. The new room furniture are custom pieces crafted out of tropical woods. The gates push open from the inside, the key is only needed to enter. I will gladly share your additional feedback with our restaurant team. I appreciate you stay and comments. For assistance, I can be reached directly at Henry.Neumann@elconvento.com or 787-648-8834. Thank you and have a great day, Henry Neumann General Manager

We recently stayed at El Convento for two nights. I had been there once before, many years ago, for drinks, and found it quite beautiful then. Since then, they have defaced the lovely interior courtyard with hideous structures, and furnished it, and the restaurant, with cheap plastic furniture. Alot of the ground floor is given up to a banquet space that is booked nonstop with large, noisy weddings - there is no lobby to speak of. The hotel needs a quite serious redesign that emphasized its beauty and creates more welcoming spaces for guests. Our room was adequate - love those high ceilings! The personnel was friendly, including the waiters, one of whom answered all my questions about local expressions and foods. I love old San Juan, preferring it to the soulless resort hotels on the Condado, but El Convento just doesn't deliver what I'd expect at this price point (well above $500/night).

This beautiful hotel is complemented by its warm, friendly and super helpful staff. Of note, Josantonio welcomed us on arrival and had many wonderful suggestions about where to eat and what to do. Adrianna also was a pleasure to chat with over the complementary wine and cheese reception each evening. We ate at cafeteria Mallorca which was a delight (and our meal was about $13 for 2). We did splurge the first night and ate at Marmalade- a foodies paradise but with a price tag to match. Stroll around old San Juan and enjoy your visit :)

My wife and I and our teenage son just returned from a week at El Convento. Absolutely beautiful hotel with wonderful service. Beautiful room with a spacious bathroom and a great view of the plaza out front as well as the church. We loved everything about the hotel and it really enhanced our trip to San Juan. Close to everything and a short Uber to the beach. By the way their sister hotel on the beach is everything promised. Breakfast each morning at Nispero was a treat and the happy hour each evening was a nice touch. The rooftop pool and hot tub were great and again a very beautiful view. We will always remember our visit to El Convento and San Juan.

If you are staying in Puerto Rico, you must stay here! The hotel is stunning. From the doors to the floors, everything is beautiful. We loved the open air design. The views were incredible, especially from our room and the rooftop pool. The location of the hotel was perfect. Walkable to countless bars, restaurants and shops. Santisimo is a restaurant connected to the hotel that I highly recommend! Incredible cocktails and food including a whole snapper. Overall, you will have an incredible experience if you stay at or visit this hotel!

This hotel is Elegant, Welcoming and a far better choice than a chain. The staff went out of their way every time. The Manager provides a wine cocktail hour for guests to mingle. The manager attended each one we went to. He even gifted me a key chain I wanted. They also provided coffee every morning and a beautiful patio to have it on. George was our bellman and he made us feel welcomed, cared for and informed about Old Town San Juan. We returned for a night before we left for home because we loved the Hotel as much as our vacation. Best Hotel experience I’ve ever had. It has old world charm and a high level of service! Stay here!!!
