This is a historic hotel. Beautiful on the surface. The common areas are very inviting. The restaurants have an ambiance. Staff is friendly and inviting. The services were lacking. No concierge. Because of Covid most bookings for tours, travel, etc. are conducted online. Presented some problems so plan ahead. The rooms are not very clean, it needs to be refreshed and updated. The towels, linens, furniture, are well worn.

We had such an incredible experience at El Convento. It's gorgeous and the staff is top-notch George Cruz was especially wonderful and made our stay there exceptional. Definitely stay here if you find yourself traveling to San Juan.

Only thing good was the employees. This hotel is run down doesn’t have a restaurant or 24 room service, no onsite store. Terrible TV reception. The rooms are in desperate need of a makeover no blankets just flat sheet. Musty moldy smell that gave me a huge headache my eyes tearing and burning, kept the window open for fresh air the other nights or I wouldn’t have been able to stay. Overall bad except for its employees at check in. Was not worth the $$$ I paid. Far from luxurious.

We had originally reserved at a partner property, Palacio Provincial, but the moment we walked in to check in, they notified us that they had “issues with some of their rooms” and had to move us here to El Convento. We only stayed for one night, so i’m basing this review exclusively on the room, which was Jr. Suite. The room was very outdated for a hotel at this price point, the bed was old and squeaky, with no comforter whatsoever, only sheets. I asked for some blankets and guest services brought a very light “twin” sized blanket. Shower had a lot of hair in the drain from a previous guest. No accesible electric plugs, only cable TV, internet did not work at all. Very old, disconected telephone with a bunch of cables thrown on the floor. The only positive was the bathroom, which seemed to have been recently renovated and had a huge bathtub.

As much as I love Old San Juan, I am so very disappointed in my stay in this hotel. I planned our trip for months before we felt it was safe to venture out. I’ve been here in Old San Juan before, loved our hotel stays and our visit to this friendly and beautiful island. This time, based on the reputation (and website) I booked a Queen Vista room from the Hotel El Convento website - showing it sleeps 4 people. Supposedly the Vista is a nicer room, views of the city, more spacious, with a nice size bathroom shown in the photos. I do travel extensively and knowing that there have been so many setbacks worldwide, I felt that I should just double check our reservation 3 weeks in advance. I spoke to Jessica in guest services. She explained that the Queen vista actually only slept 2 people, but that the Double Vista room would sleep 4. Fortunately, she could move us to that room as they still had good availability. She was friendly and helpful. I asked her to email an update of our reservation. I never got it, so I called again (twice) and was assured that we were good to go. At check in, I had no Double Vista. I had a Queen Vista, which they had overbooked anyway, so I waited while they found us a room. Not the same room grade, although she told me it was. How do I know? Easy - I looked at their rooms online. They did charge us the same money, no apology, much lower grade room. Advice, do not book a Standard room. Go right down the street for way less money and get a lovely upgraded room - still in Old San Juan and in much better repair. The AC did not work In our room. I called and an engineer came up and said it would take a while. We have been here for two days, and it is still taking a while, although it is now finally cooled down to 75 degrees. Due to the Sahara dust currently in the atmosphere, it’s very humid and 90 degrees outdoors. We cannot leave our “balcony door” open due to the heat. Last night they brought us an oscillating fan. Speaking of balcony doors, ours is broken. It will not latch. Our exit door is also having issues. (See photos). And our drapery is not working, the rods are broken and the drapes are off track. Our room could use a deep clean (and ok, I do realize that it is hard to get people back to work). Our mattresses were worn and all of us woke with literal backaches and neck issues. (although imagine my surprise when I glanced into an actual Double Vista room down the hall when staff was cleaning, and wow - new mattresses!) We didn’t get the “new” televisions, so we do not get satellite cable. I only know this as I called the front desk when we could not get television stations, and he told me we don’t have the “new” tv’s so we can get a few analog channels but not Dish. (Although our television keeps flashing our DISH satellite is powered off). Tiny bathroom, terribly unclean. It was once nice, albeit very small. (Pedestal lavatory, toilet, small tub with low ceiling) We had to call guest services and ask for washcloths. There were two towels for all of us to share, only one hand towel. No wash cloths. We asked for four, they brought us two. Oh - do not expect the restaurant to be open for breakfast - you must walk to their sister property (which is much better kept) and a few blocks away. I know, the website states the restaurants are reopened, and one is - but not for breakfast. I will give them this inconvenience because I know labor is hard to come by and PR is not fully opened. But there is no excuse for charging just under $400 per night for a room we booked but were not provided, sheets that do not fit the beds, dirty floors, broken doors, and faulty air conditioning. Plus side - staff was friendly. Another plus - you can tell that this hotel was a beautiful old dame - and with some care, it can be once again. The public areas are worn in a timeless way. (Again, any hotel in Old San Juan has this attribute but most that I have seen on this trip are far better maintained - and we did go out and search for another hotel with availability after we all gave up on avoiding a hot night’s sleep without backache and sore necks) I do not like to give negative reviews - but this hotel earned this one. Had they offered to bring a rollaway bed to our Queen Vista we booked three months in advance, had they been surprised that the website lists 4 people for a room with a single Queen bed (where do you put the other two people?) Had they even offered to adjust our rate or even apologized for the failure to provide the room as promised, I would have been ok. Had they followed through three weeks earlier with their promise to provide a Double Vista room, I would have been well satisfied. Had they even mentioned that I might want to book elsewhere because they could not offer the accommodation I had booked, that would have been ok, too - I would have had time to make a reservation in another lovely hotel in the area. I have never had an issue with OLD, (I love historical buildings and have owned a few) but I do have an issue with poor service, rooms in ill repair, and overbooking guests - especially guests who call to follow up. There are many lovely places to stay in this immediate area, and most of them do not near the almost $400 per night that this hotel commanded from me. I am most disappointed that we carefully planned this visit for our granddaughter as her high school graduation trip (postponed from last year due to Covid) and this was to be her first experience in a lovely environment in a beautiful country. I am most disappointed that they did not excuse themselves for giving us a room that needed much attention, was not the room selection that we were charged for, and were unapologetic for the inconvenience. In ending, a good nights sleep on a comfortable mattress with sheeting that fits the bed, and a clean environment with basic amenities provided outranks staying in an historical building that does not live up to the standard it claims. Shame on them. If I thought it would do any good I’d go to management, but of the four people I did have a pleasant conversation, none of them were the least apologetic or attempted to correct the issues.
