I booked one night through expedia for August 7, 2022 FOR A TOTAL CHARGE OF $241.75 ($72.00 in taxes and "service fees." I went to visit my family due to my mother's death. United Airlines cancelled my flight and I could not leave until the nex day. I called the hotel and asked to stay a different night that week during my stay. They said I had to call expedia -which I did. Expedia said the HOTEL had to agree to it. I called Hotel again. The manager XIOMARA GONZALEZ said "no refunds." I asked simply to stay for a different night since they got the money and were paid by expedia already. THE ANSWER WAS NO. I called my cousin in puerto rico and said, why dont you stay there tonight with your grandchild since they wont give me a refund. She said she had plans but would try. I spoke again with XIOMARA GONZALEZ. My cousin had a birthday party and could not use the room last minute. Ms. GONZALEZ SAID now they were keeping the money because my cousin was a "NO SHOW" It is August, low season, the hotel had plenty of ro0oms open and this was ANOTHER EXCUSE to keep my money and not even let me stay another night. So, BEWARE!!

El Convento Hotel in Old San Juan is one of the most amazing hotels I have stayed at. This is my sixth time staying in El Convento, need I say more? The historical architecture and entryways are breathtaking. The rooms are clean, spacious, and extremely comfortable. Every staff member I encountered from the doorman, and front desk personnel, to the cleaning staff, was delightful and eager to help. The service was exceptional and they went over and beyond to help make my stay enjoyable. This hotel is located diagonally across from San Juan Cathedral, and strategically situated where you can walk anywhere in Old San Juan. I am a solo traveler and I felt very safe.

This hotel was originally built in the 1600s as a Convent in the 1050s it was converted to a hotel. If you're looking for something put of the ordinary chain this is a good place to stay. It's very convenient to walking Old San Juan. The rooms are rustic but not shabby or dirty. The rooms are larger than standard hotels with alcoves and nooks. There is a coffee bar, safe, large closet with luggage racks. Plugs are very limited. I suggest bringing a power strip if you have a lit of devices to plug in. The bathrooms are small but have a large soaking tub shower combo. Beds are very comfortable and towels are nice thick and new. Toiletries provided are more upscale. The water pressure is good with lots of hot water. There is no hotel parking. There's a lot right across the side street ( called Cristo) at $27 night. To ensure a parking place for each night you can pre pay and they will save spot for you. There is a patio restaurant/bar and a good restaurant on the 2nd floor- give it a try. On 3rd floor you'll find coffee service, bottled water and complementary drinks plus a lovely patio overlooking the cathedral. Internet is available but can be challenging. Staff is pleasant and very very helpful. There is maid service The neighborhood is residential and very safe. I walked late evenings and early morning with no concern. A very lovely area with the oldest cathedral in the USA across the street and a small park. The price is reasonable. I would stay here again with no hesitation.

I’m sure there are a gazillion reviews of this hotel, with all kinds of opinions, but I will say, I love, love, love this place. I’m prejudiced towards historic venues, classic Spanish architecture, and antique ambiance- so take that as a starting point. Service for us was fine, check in was a breeze and we arrived late, well after 9:00 pm. The pool is small - just a dipping pool, and that too was fine, as we knew ahead of time not to expect a big pool. All we needed was basically relax and get wet after walking around Old San Juan all day. The views from the pool and the terrace, are beautiful. The architecture, the courtyard, the corridors, which are all open to the air, are just dripping with historic ambience. TheI location is perfect if you are a sightseer like ourselves. Atmosphere is quiet elegance, historic and calm, understated luxury, not over the top. We enjoyed the upstairs bar one evening, felt like we were with Hemingway in old Havana. We normally try to eat outside of our hotel to try new experiences, but we had lunch one day at one of the restaurants and it was very good.. We were 5 people, covering three generations, in two rooms. Everyone loved it.

The pros: This property is GORGEOUS, and the location for exploring Old San Juan can't be beat. One huge con, though, was that the room we booked was not as advertised. We booked three rooms for our party of 8. One of them was the Junior Suite, which we selected because the website says it sleeps 4 people. We also communicated by email with the hotel in advance of our stay and confirmed that 3 people would be sleeping in that room. However, on check-in there was only 1 bed in the Junior Suite. No second bed (not even a rollaway) for the 3rd person. The staff on-site told us that, despite what the website says, not all Junior Suites sleep 4. In addition, no other rooms were available, and the hotel does not have rollaway beds on site. We had to settle for an inflatable bed for the 3rd person staying in that room. Given that the Junior Suite was over double the price of the other room we booked that slept 2 people, we were very disappointed. I asked if the hotel could adjust the price of the room, and I was told I'd have to speak to the manager. The manager, however, was not on site when we checked in. I was told she would call me, but she never did even though I inquired at the front desk two more times during our stay.

For the high rates, historical prowess, and location, we had high expectations going in. All of which were promptly let down within twenty minutes of arrival. We were met with rude customer service at the front desk when it was discovered that the room we had booked via THEIR website was incorrectly labeled and a 6ft member of our party was forced to sleep on a roll away bed in an already crowded room. When I went down later to speak to a manager about the marketing mishap, he presented me with breakfast coupons which proved to only operate for two items on the menu— a feature which was not noted on the coupon and left us being charged for a breakfast we didn’t even want. Upon arriving in the room we found the bathroom facilities severely under serviced: rusted and busted. Given the challenges to the island in the last few years, we were patient and understanding in some issues which may have presented themselves; however, when I spoke to the staff about being transferred he refused blaming the wedding party who were taking up a few other rooms. Overall the customer service, cleanliness, and price of this location left us more than disappointed.

The front desk staff were very friendly, and the place was a landmark worth seeing, but management and facilities were egregious. We paid for a suite, and the rooftop pool above the room was literally leaking into the room. We had to notify the front desk twice before an engineer came to see it. We were then told by the front desk that we needed to switch rooms, and that we would not be charged for the room. However, when it came time for checkout, the person at the front desk had changed, and told us they would have to look into it. They said they would call back within a couple of hours. By the evening, they still had not called back, so when I called the hotel myself it was again somebody different, and they said that the manager could offer 50% off of the rate rather than the waiver we were promised. The manager never offered to speak with us. Our group also had a second room. There was no housekeeping until the last day of checkout when they came early and made the bed even though we were checking out that day. As others have reported on here, the floors were dusty and I had to clean my feet before getting into bed. Other than the leak from the rooftop pool into our suite, there were leaks throughout the entire building with "Caution Wet Floor" signs everywhere. We were traveling with my 75-year-old mother and this was clearly a hazard. I understand the staff are trying their hardest but the owners and management need to do better.

Smack dab in the center of it all, this elegant hotel is THE place to stay in Old San Juan. The room is well appointed, and roomy. The common areas are well nicely decorated, and the staff helpful. But mostly it is the vibe of this hotel that gets to you. What a wonderful place to stay. Make reservations way in advance.

I invited friends who were passing through on a cruise ship for drinks and appetizers at your bar. It was shameful, the quality of the appetizers one could have gotten at an Olive Garden or even McDonald's. Who not put your best food forward, the chefs options for a sample of Puerto Rican delicacies was pathetic. Example: the mini fried mofongo that was fried to a crisp (and when is mofongo fried?) Chinese style chicken wings?? Charcuterie dish more like sandwich meats on a platter. What gives any of these Puerto Rican? Come on folks, you win a person's heart through their mouth, upgrade your food options; remember that today's person passing through is a prospective customer for tomorrow.
