Hotel El Convento's prime location in Old San Juan is a highlight for travelers, who also enjoy the rooftop pool and the daily wine and cheese hour. However, opinions on the rooms vary; some guests appreciate the historic charm, while others find them outdated and too noisy. The service is a mixed bag, with reports of both friendly staff and occasional neglect. Although the hotel's cleanliness is generally well-regarded, some have had issues with housekeeping. Reviewers warn that the value proposition is questionable, given the high cost and some service issues.

The facilities are a 10, great restaurant and bar. Breakfast is suburb and ask for Kiara to be your server. She is fun and knowledgable. The hotel is located in from of the oldest church in the USA and a beautiful plaza

This has to be one of my favorite hotels that we’ve stayed in. The atmosphere is wonderful with the comfortable feel of old world charm. The room we had was very spacious on the 4th floor with lots of light or we could close the shutters if we needed a little nap after exploring old San Juan. The inner courtyard had restaurant and bar easily accessible. A nice bonus was the evening free wine and cheese hour.

I wouldn’t say that this hotel would work well with families with younger children, as beach activities are far away. Although, for young or older couples, this hotel is well located to visit the sites of old San Juan, shopping, and dining.

Also, if you are connecting with a cruise ship, the hotel is well located to the ship terminal.

The staff at the hotel were very helpful and we had no problems communicating. Thanks for the Service!

I stayed for a lovely 4 nights. The historical old convent is a fabulous charming hotel. The room is beautifully appointed and has all the modern conveniences. The bed was comfortable and the A/C worked well. The room was virtually soundproof with an inner door that blocks out courtyard activities. The luxurious bathroom does suffer a lack of counter space. The staff was fabulous throughout the hotel. I enjoyed absorbing the ambiance of this historical gem. The courtyard provides a restaurant and bar accompanied with casual music. There is a terrace where you can help yourself to coffee/tea/water and fruit. On the fourth floor is a small dipping pool with a great view. Everything in Old San Juan is a convenient walk from the hotel. I loved this hotel and look forward to returning on my next visit.

Given the number of good reviews we read (here and elsewhere) our expectations were clearly too high. The woman at reception was a bit clueless and gave us the wrong room keys, and was not particularly forthcoming when asked for recommendations. The room was tiny; presumably the nuns who originally occupied the place didn’t need much space.

During our three nights there, housekeeping never did get the towels right: the first day no bathmat or washcloths, the second only one hand towel, the third day she didn’t arrive until after 5:00pm so the room didn’t get made up at all—although at least we were able to ask her for the proper towels.

The bed was made up with a single top sheet and no other covers. We were cold sleeping the first night, so requested a blanket or comforter the next day. Housekeeping arrived and told us “we don’t have those, but here are more sheets.” So we thought “well maybe that’s the way things are done here,” but no—the other three places we stayed in PR (two of which made no pretense of being “luxury” like this one does) all had plenty of covers.

At checkout the bill was wrong (we had erroneously been charged for an extra day) and had to be recalculated.

All that being said, the property itself is visually beautiful, the onsite restaurant is quite good, and the location in the heart of Old San Juan is unbeatable. But the overall experience just didn’t add up to the “luxury” they advertised.

I had high expectations that my room at the El Convento would be spotless and free of germs given this pandemic. I was very disappointed and concerned that we were given a room that was not properly cleaned. Let me explain. After 7 hours of travel, we arrived late around 10:00 p.m. We literally opened the door to our hotel room, deposited our luggage, and left to find food. We couldn't find anything open so we returned to our room around 11:00 p.m. When we turned on the lights and really looked around, we noticed the tile floors were filthy and had not been swept. The scarf at the end of the bed had blood stains on it and there were long dark hairs in the bedding when we pulled back the covers. The bathroom was also not clean. We tried calling down to the front desk but no one answered. The phone just rang and rang and rang. We figured that because of the curfew everyone had gone home. My daughter and I were stuck in the room for the night. After a sleepless night, we went down first thing in the morning to talk to the manager. He apologized and made arrangements to move us to a new room and said we would not be charged for the first night. We took the clothing that was worn in the room and went to find a laundromat since the hotel washing machine was not working. When we returned, we did move to another room and were pleased with the rest of our stay. When I checked out, I asked for a copy of my bill but it didn't show any credit for our first night. The woman at the front desk assured me that it would be corrected and that I should just give it a few days. I checked a week later and not only was I charged for my original stay, but I was also charged for the two nights in the new cleanroom. These additional nights were eventually credited but still no credit for the first night as promised I have sent several emails since then and was assured that this would be corrected. However, it has been three weeks, and still no credit. Since the manager offered and we lost one night's sleep, incurred the inconvenience of having to take time away from our stay to find a laundromat, and lastly, the obvious safety concern of being in an unclean room during this pandemic, I thought that crediting us for our first night was the least that the Hotel El Convento could do to make things right. I never asked for this credit-the manager offered. I find it concerning that he did not follow through given our terrible experience.

We were so excited to stay here after hearing glowing recommendations from friends. As expected, the location and overall historic charm were top notch. Also, the staff were friendly and helpful. We even got upgraded at no charge. We loved that our room opened up to a balcony that gave us direct access to the pool. The room was a little old & shabby but clean, & the bathroom had a tub w/ a shower in addition to a standing shower, which was helpful for a family of 4 trying to get ready all at once. The roughest part was the actual sleeping! The beds were doubles (which we knew, but still, queens are much preferable when sharing), and there were no blankets, duvets, comforters, etc., only a doubled up top sheet (???). We asked for a blanket and got a thin, scratchy thing that looked like a relic from the convent days. Even though we turned the a/c up to 80 degrees, the room was absolutely freezing! And wow, the a/c was LOUD, which would have been ok I guess for white noise purposes, except it turned off and back on repeatedly all night, which kept waking us up (not hard since we were already mostly awake, cramped, and shivering.) Then, after each rough night’s sleep, the hotel doesn’t even sell coffee! I had to venture over to a nearby plaza and wait 20 minutes for some at a kiosk (it was all I could find), which I was in no mood to do — though the heat felt good! This hotel could really be something special. It’s got “good bones” but needs some major upgrades, especially re: the beds and bedding. And for god’s sake, please sell coffee!

We arrived in Sn Juan a few days before our cruise and we stayed at Hotel El Convento. What a lovely little hotel. The rooms were small but there is so much public space inside the courtyard that you don't spend much time in the room. The pool is small but it is a great place to sit outside, catch some sun and breeze and perhaps stay for the sunset. Each day at 6 pm, the hotel hosts a free wine and cheese service for guests. It is quite popular. All the employees were helpful. The location of the hotel makes exploring Old Town San Juan easy.

Hotel El Convento is in old San Juan, 5 minutes' walk from the fort & cemetery and 2 minutes from the supermarket & Marshalls on the Plaza de Armas. Everything is within walking distance. My room included a cafe table with chairs and an armchair with a view of the bay from my Juliette balcony. Also, guest rooms are provided with a complimentary bottle of wine. The hotel looks large from the outside but there is an atrium, which accounts for a lot of the space. There's a wide space between the rooms and the edge of the atrium with more cafe tables and chairs. It was a great place to sit when it rained - sort of inside and outside.

As some people have mentioned, the furnishings in the rooms are a little shabby and there are the kind of insects that you can expect in old buildings. After my first night, I asked someone to sweep the floor, but it would be preferable if they regularly washed them. Also, to begin I was put in a standard room & had to be insistent before they recognized their error and moved me to a vista room, which I had booked and which was much nicer.

At the end of my vacation, I was unable to get a COVID-test and so was not allowed to board my plane. Even knowing that El Convento was fully booked, I went back to them and people there arranged for me to stay at their sister hotel, Palacio Provincial. They also found a testing site for me. I don’t know what I would have done without their help.

All things considered, I highly recommend staying at this hotel. As well as being convenient it has a great deal of charm.

My husband and I stayed at El Convento for three nights. We arrived and realized he'd accidentally booked a room with two double beds. We asked if we could move to a room with a king and Leyshla Stouth, the front desk supervisor, was incredibly helpful. She ended up moving us into a beautiful suite at no additional charge and even left us a bottle of Cava when she overheard me say it was our anniversary. Throughout our three days, we had great experiences with other front desk staff who made great restaurant recommendations and were just in general, really friendly. Our room was comfortable and clean with a stunning bathroom. They have a great wine and cheese hour in the evening. We will definitely return to Old San Juan and will always stay at El Convento.

While the facility has potential. it's a long way from what is advertised and what travellers would expect from Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Whoever wrote their marketing copy obviously never stayed there and should win an award for best fiction writer.

We checked in on August 29 and checked out August 31. The pool, hidden on the fourth floor, was barely a dipping pool and the few chairs took up all the deck space. The restaurant and open air courtyard bars / restaurant were lacking in just about everything you would expect. The outdoor planters are a great litter box for the cats that roam the property. We did have a stunning view of the mold covered building across the alleyway. Customer service is non-existent. I left an expensive pair of pants and two shirts in the closet - admittedly, my mistake. However, I called tht same evening upon realizing my mistake and was told there was nothing in the lost and found, and they would have housekeeping check. They promised a callbck. Nothing. I called again the next day and was told the same thing. Nothing. I called again the next day and was told the same thing. Nothing. Called again the next day and asked for a manager. The person who answered the phone said no manager was available and that she had a note that nothing was found. This is the worst customer service experience I have ever had. No empathy, no apology, no action. All they had to do was to send someone to the room the first day (called within a few hours of checking out), and the whole experience would have been different. We will NEVER stay there again and advise all our friends to stay away. I can't express enough how poor this experience was.
