This was our first trip to Jamaica and our honeymoon. I can truly say that our stay in Portland at the Mocking Bird Hill more than exceeded our expectations. The ambiance at Mocking Bird Hill and the lush tropical, colourful vegetation and birdlife surrounding the hotel creates a relaxing and most serene environment - a much welcome and humbling escape from the hustle and bustle of the city life we are used to. Angela, Paula and the rest of the team at the hotel were amongst the loveliest people we've met. They made our stay very personal, attended to all our needs and made sure we got the most of our limited time in Portland. They truly made it feel like a 'home from home' and we are very grateful for each and everyone's immense contribution to our stay. For anyone wanting to stay at a hotel that is warm, friendly, luxurious and comfortable, then Mocking Bird Hill is the place. The drive from the Kingston Airport is quite long and tiring (especially after a 10 hour flight from London), but that's quickly forgotten at the first glimpse of the stunning natural beauty within which this charming hotel is based. We stayed in a deluxe room overlooking the lush tropical garden and sea beyond. The room itself was very clean, spacious and surprisingly breezy - the fully opening doors leading to the terrace expressed a sense of indoor/outdoor living which added to the experience. This, along with the hotel's eco-friendly approach really encourages guests to enjoy and experience the gorgeous surroundings and appreciate this part of Jamaica for all its beauty and authenticity. The hotel has many activities to offer, from organising hiking up the Blue Mountains, bird watching, car hire and arranging transport to the various beautiful beaches that are so close to the hotel (Frenchman's Cove, Winifred Beach, Boston Beach etc). For us, the most unforgettable experience was rafting down the Rio Grande where we were hosted by a lovely local gentleman named Kevin (Captain no. 6) whose friendliness, politeness and humility made our day - a stop at Belinda's cafe is a must on this excursion and I can confidently say that her jerk chicken was the best chicken dish I've tasted in as long as I could remember. Walking on the roads in Port Antonio was also very nice. All the locals are very friendly and eager to talk to us - be sure to greet people as you walk by, they visibly appreciate it! Overall - what an amazing 6 days we had here. I can't wait to visit again, hopefully not too far in the future and for a longer period!

Lovely stay in January, Angela was a very thoughtful host. Despite challenges of lockdown the hotel very much felt like a 'home from home' and the room and grounds were excellent. Beautiful views of the coastline and well located for Port Antonio and beaches.

How lovely to hear from you although your trip was a while ago. Thank you for your feedback, which we really appreciate especially since as you point out, we were all impacted and restricted in many ways as a result of the pandemic. Your positive words mean a lot especially to the team members and motivates them to continue giving their best to make every guest feel welcomed and at home.

this place is always a charmer no matter what, rain, shine, hail, storm, hurricane, covid.... unbelievable they've been able to function on such skeleton staff! We were there dark days of covid last year in a deserted set up, but this time with more people around but still crowds way down it was the most charming forest lodge, no bar or restaurant still but continental breakie with homemade bread mmmmmm! Frenchman's Beach as usual did not fail to deliver. I think the fact that it can come off the grid entirely from between 1-2 weeks really helped them through the covid chaos.

This place shouldnt be open its a scam and the real owners are sitting in germany clueless to the fact that the manager is NOT i repeat NOT holding this hotel upp to standars. The rooms are NOT being sanitized properly according to covid-19 sanitation standards. They are NOT complying to the sanitary rules the industry demands. They have a watersystem that cleans the water so its drinkable but they have no clue of witch filter goes in what tube carbonfilter goes right or left??? So drinkable water NO so you really cant drink it and be100%sure plus there is NO running water so if u want to wash take a shower u need to go down to the rainwatercollectors and get a bucket to your room??!!?? Forget about having the fan on at night they have a huge electrical malfunction that costs around 200us dollars to fix but they really cant afford it (heard the manager Angela talk to electrical repair company) so shes trying to get a bargain?!?! For the electricity?¡?¡ that should be common sense to get fixed immediately!!!! I wonder if the owners know of this!!?? So with no electricity no running water, wich means no pumps running means a messy pool really messy not up to par and yeah you cant flush and if u need to well i told you about the bucket right!!?? The staff are getting payed around 100-150us dollars a month (thats  modern day slavery to me!!) beacuse as the manager Angela puts it "well they get to live here". The manager Angela also has bookings that she dont even tell the owners about todays date is September the 8th 2021 and just now 3 guests local guests checked in needing 2 rooms the manager charged them 200us dollars a night per room  ( also heard her talking to somebody from jamaica who wanted to make a reservation for some music producer) she then pockets the earnings ,do the staff get anything for it NO!! Again wonder if the owners know anything about this? The manager is a scamartist! We feel sorry for anybody that books a night at this hotel its awful the way they showcase there diplomas about beeing an eco-friendly hotel and then have a firepit in the jungle were they burn everything that doesnt go in the compost. Wooow its that what u call eco friendly???  And they charge you to, between 200-300 for a night NO restaurant open nothing for sale NOTHING!!So you wonder how i have accumulated so much knowledge about how this facility is beeing run beacuse we came here as volunteers we came with good intentions wanting to help spent a lot of money to get here to realize that it was all a lie. were leaving tomorrow after being here 14 days in total,13 days to much if u ask me and thuru all our travels the last 5months and we have been to many places helping as volunteers we must say this was absolutely our biggest mistake. So i really think the owners should take a good look at what they are facing or they should just CLOSE the place. Hope evrybody is staying safe be well!

Firstly this reviewer was not a paying guest. He and his wife came through workaway and were given accommodation in exchange for 3 hours work per day. We provided the accommodation but received little work in exchange. All we have received is complaints about situations about which the reviewer is clearly clueless- as an example the electrical repairs will cost well over USD 3000 and not USD200 as he claims. Some of the items required for the repair have to be ordered from abroad and this takes time. He also does not know what is being charged and is obviously unaware that we the owners know what is being charged as we receive the bank statements. He is also clueless about the nightly rates which he has, in his rage, misquoted. He says they wanted to help, but instead he is clearly trying to destroy our business as we try to navigate the severe effects of the pandemic and keep our remaining staff employed at wages well above the government stipulated minimum wage. Since the volunteer was unable to offer any help at all during a difficult operational situation, but only complain without knowing any of the facts it is best that he has left. The reviewer has no understanding of the circumstances that created the electrical problems that arose out of storm damage, and obviously if there is no electricity the pumps cannot work. Any volunteer with any modicum of good sense and willingness would have offered to collect buckets of water to use while the matter was attended to. Due to the tireless efforts of the manager the situation has been seen to by the requisite technicians. This review appears to us to be vengeance for the fact that for a few days the reviewer was unable to ‘live the life of Riley’.

Nestled in the beautiful hills of Portland, this hideaway hotel really surprised me and my partner. It was a birthday celebration that was made extra special by the accommodating support of the management and staff. The service was really exceptional and made for a wonderful stay. Not only did we learn to birdwatch, but we also enjoyed delicious meals including a specially curated birthday dinner. As this was pre-COVID, we were able to engage with other visitors at dinner and breakfast which was an intimate touch. We truly felt special and enjoyed the experience that was provided.

Located on the foothills of the Blue Mountains just outside of Port Antonio, Mocking Bird Hill is notable for its hard to reach but beautiful location and grounds. It is a Eco-Hotel so forget about air conditioning - the evenings are often breezy and there were no windows, just slotted plantation style window and porch doors that allow the breeze (and mosquitoes) in - so use the provided mosquito netting at night or expect a few bites. If the night gets hot and there is no breeze, ceiling fans will help air circulation. Breakfast is mostly fruit and bread with great coffee and juice. I went on a birding trip with a private guide, leaving early in the morning, and staff packed a great breakfast picnic for me! I was very impressed. Besides the swimming pool, not much for children to do, but fine for couples. Dinners in the restaurant were hit-or-miss and generally not impressive. The true allure of this spot is in it’s beautiful gardens - numerous winding trails invite birdwatching and peaceful meditation. The staff were friendly and helpful. Transportation from airports in Kingston or Montego Bay can be very expensive or cumbersome - renting and self-driving the 4 hours from Montego is cheaper but not for the faint of heart as rules of the road are almost non-existent and there are some dangerous switch-backs. The road up to the hotel is also fairly rough. Also, I strongly advise exchanging your money to Jamaican Dollars before reaching Port Antonio as many vendors in the area will take advantage of tourists who only carry US$. We often found ourselves in issues because we didn’t prepare well with local currency. If you like things a bit less touristy, love gardens and birds, this is a beautiful location for a few nights.

It’s one thing to write a review based on a short stay of 1or 2 nights. But to be able to sum up your experiences over a fortnight, when you have had much more contact with the team and a better sense of how we treat our guests, as a wonderful experience, that is a great compliment. We are so glad, we were able to exceed your expectations. Thank you for the great review, which has made our day! We appreciate the time you have taken to share this lovely review with us and the community and helping us with your recommendation.

Three of us just finished a wonderful week in the eco-resort Hotel Mockingbird Hill. Its pleasures included a porch with a sweeping view out over rain forest vegetation down to the Caribbean, swims in the sea at Frenchman's Cove, great food, the best massages we've ever had, an underused swimming pool -- underused because there are only ten rooms -- and a chilled vibe that creeps up on you and leaves you relaxed and happy after a few days.

I had the good fortune to spend 9 nights relaxing at Hotel Mockingbird Hill. I was looking for an authentic Jamaican eco hotel and certainly found it. The beautiful building is nestled in a fabulous 6 acre tropical garden filled with every kind of flora and fauna, it is a bird spotter’s paradise. The local beaches are within easy reach and are some of the most beautiful in the Caribbean. The staff from the moment Mr Whittley White collected me from Kingston Airport could not have been more helpful. Angela made sure everything ran smoothly during my stay, accommodating my dietary requirements with some of the best Jamaican food I have tasted. Angela also does massage which is a must. Orlando and Patrona could not have been more helpful as well. Very sad to leave but I will certainly be returning with my family very soon.

Wow! Thank you so much for your wonderful remarks. It was a pleasure to have you as our guest. We will be sure to share your comments with the rest of the team. They will be happy to know that you felt at home and welcomed by all. It’s also gives us great pleasure to know how much you enjoyed the gardens - sadly, those booking very short stays sometimes do not even get to see them. We are delighted to hear that you found our staff warm and friendly and our restaurant excellent. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts – your feedback is greatly appreciated and motivates our team further. We hope to see you back with your family at Mockingbird Hill very soon.
