Our main goal in Jamaica was to explore the smaller endemic wildlife in the eastern part of the island, so we booked this hotel with this purpose in mind.
The garden of the hotel is large and has many spots to watch the local wildlife. We in fact only left the premises once to head to the blue mountains.
The rooms are spacious with the possibility to make yourself a tea or coffee (coffee and fresh drinking water is provided) whenever you feel like it. Rooms are clean and equipped with everything you need for a stay.
Following their eco concept AC is not installed but fans and the wind from the sea are enough to cool you down.
The staff is very helpful, always friendly if approached.
Breakfast can be included - go straight for the Jamaican options for breakfast. Chef Mike is Italian but is very experienced in the Jamaican Cuisine. If you expect the same prices as in the streets for the menu you shouldn’t bother to order.
Angela was taking care of every request and can organize whatever tour you want to do.
We enjoyed our stay very much are grateful for this pieces of nature close by the place where you sleep.
As our purpose might be very specific: check their website for all details before you book. If you’re used to (or expect) all-inclusive beach resorts you might find this hotel a bit odd.
As a small place of peace and stillness close to Port Antonio you’ll most likely enjoy the maximum of 10 guests inside of a beautiful (because not overdone) garden.

I had the good fortune to spend 9 nights relaxing at Hotel Mockingbird Hill. I was looking for an authentic Jamaican eco hotel and certainly found it. The beautiful building is nestled in a fabulous 6 acre tropical garden filled with every kind of flora and fauna, it is a bird spotter’s paradise. The local beaches are within easy reach and are some of the most beautiful in the Caribbean. The staff from the moment Mr Whittley White collected me from Kingston Airport could not have been more helpful. Angela made sure everything ran smoothly during my stay, accommodating my dietary requirements with some of the best Jamaican food I have tasted. Angela also does massage which is a must. Orlando and Patrona could not have been more helpful as well. Very sad to leave but I will certainly be returning with my family very soon.

Wow! Thank you so much for your wonderful remarks. It was a pleasure to have you as our guest. We will be sure to share your comments with the rest of the team. They will be happy to know that you felt at home and welcomed by all. It’s also gives us great pleasure to know how much you enjoyed the gardens - sadly, those booking very short stays sometimes do not even get to see them. We are delighted to hear that you found our staff warm and friendly and our restaurant excellent. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts – your feedback is greatly appreciated and motivates our team further. We hope to see you back with your family at Mockingbird Hill very soon.

Wow! Hotel Mockingbird Hill is in an unbelievably beautiful setting! The views are incredible, the garden is tranquil, the rooms are bright, comfortable and clean, and the staff are welcoming. Angela was fantastic and upgraded my room just because there was a larger room available. Patrona works incredibly hard to make sure all the guests have everything they need and is patient and attentive with everyone.

The restaurant is the best you will find in Jamaica! It was not my intention to eat there every night, but I couldn’t help myself. Divine!!

I can’t say enough good things about my time here! Highly recommend!

This was my first visit to Jamaica, and it was as part of a group of 11 people with birding guides. Our first 2 nights were in Montego Bay and then we drove a few hours to reach this magical place. Angela, the manager, was very gracious and everyone who worked on the property were helpful and friendly. My room overlooked the forest trails and the ocean and there were even more stunning views from the upper decks of the main hotel building. The bed was comfortable and I slept under the mosquito netting (on the king sized 4-poster bed) so that I could leave the lovely shutter-doors open to the night sky and sounds. A fantastic getaway from screens and electronics, and lovely flowers and well-maintained nature trails for hiking, birding and photography right on the grounds!!

The proximity of the hotel to recognized birding hot-spots was one reason for staying here, but the grounds themselves were truly wonderful to explore or simply to enjoy via overviews from the comfortable upper-level porch. Welcome signage in the rooms encourages guests to pay attention to water conservation and to minimizing the use of non-recyclables. Angela and the staff were so helpful, and the meals we had onsite were beautifully presented and very tasty (especially the coconut curries).

Not stayed here just decided to go for dinner as we were staying locally.
The views are great but the food less so. Firstly what restaurant doesn’t have white wine, when serving fish on the menu. Also no Diet Coke or orange juice but we did get warm water beer and sprite so not all bad.
The meal was average, starters were okay, nothing special but the mains were just a piece of fish two potatoes and big pieces of ginger. A total rip off for $95 plus the restaurant is separate to the bar $14.5 so they bring you two bills and it’s cash only.
When it came to desert we weren’t asked if we wanted some we were told “you don’t want desert do you” 🤣 waitress tried to take away my drink that was half full and obviously wasn’t trained in waitressing.
Such a shame as it would have been a lovely place to have a nice meal.
If nothing else it reminded us a bit of faulty towers.

We stayed at Hotel Mockingbird Hotel in Port Antonio for 1 night in mid-March as part of a tour with Arrowhead Birding Tours (Dwayne Swabay was a great guide). Check in was quick and easy…there are lots of steps so keep that mind if that is an issue. The hotel is surrounded by the rainforest on a steep hill with lots of flowers. There are great views from the top floor of the main dining room. It was odd being the only guests on the property, but there was a night watchman. We felt safe and left our room wide open to get some breeze…there is no AC.

This hotel has some age, but everything was clean. Our room was basic but had a big bed with a mosquito net, a bathroom, and stuff for making coffee…all we needed. We had a large sitting area and deck overlooking the rainforest…we even had a female peacock roost right off the deck.

We had a chance to do some birdwatching before it got dark and found a roosting Potoo. We went out in the evening and got some great views of a resident Jamaican owl. We did have dinner there…again was odd to have the chef to ourselves. Our dinner was good, but our guide was not happy with his fish. We left before breakfast.

This is a nice quiet place with its own little slice of paradise…I would recommend.

Wow, what an amazing location. The staff are all friendly and very helpful. The rooms are exactly as described and you have access to beautiful gardens and the amazing north-east coast of Jamaica . The eco credentials are impressive.

Post Covid, there is no on site restaurant, cafe, bar or breakfast facility . While all of this can be brought in, guests booking via Expedia should be made aware this needs to planned in advance and, in our view, affects the ambience ( particularly lack of a cafe/bar). This change is also not really clear on the website or pre arrival emails via Expedia, which is important, particularly as there are so many positive pre Covid reviews of the breakfasts and the Mille Fleur restaurant

Thanks again for a great stay Angela/team and we hope you have a great season and that it becomes possible to make some adjustments as the business returns from Covid .

this place is always a charmer no matter what, rain, shine, hail, storm, hurricane, covid.... unbelievable they've been able to function on such skeleton staff! We were there dark days of covid last year in a deserted set up, but this time with more people around but still crowds way down it was the most charming forest lodge, no bar or restaurant still but continental breakie with homemade bread mmmmmm! Frenchman's Beach as usual did not fail to deliver.

I think the fact that it can come off the grid entirely from between 1-2 weeks really helped them through the covid chaos.

Management very difficult. We left early so we could enjoy our vacation Worth it to lose money rather than have more of a very bad experience. The property is beautiful but it is for sale and the absentee owners just want to sell

Thanks for your interest. The restaurant is now being run by an independent operator. He can provide breakfast (a la carte) and dinner on request. There are local eateries in the village of Drapers which are within walking distance.

Contact the hotel, they can provide you with a driver who will pick you up at the airport - Great guy, but pricey though. We found a driver for the return trip ourselves - half the price of the driver provided by the hotel.
