I have been looking forward to visiting this resort for 3 years and I finally got the opportunity. I had the expectations for a 5 star resort, based on the pictures, Karisma brand and previous reviews, while taking in consideration the Covid 19 pandemic circumstances. The weather was very good, we only got 2 hours of rain during our whole stay. Unfortunately, it disappointed me on several accounts. Starting with the good and very good: Beautiful beach, with plenty of shade, loungers and beds. Loungers occupancy on the beach was under 25%. Normally, the ocean is very clear, not this time, because of the waves. The water is shallow and very safe for kids or people who do not swim. One morning, the beach had an incredible amount of seaweed which the resort people cleaned in a record time, I was really impressed. On the day we left, there were no more waves and we got a glimpse of the beautiful, clear, wonderful turquoise water we love. The resort itself is beautiful. Only half of it was opened (buildings 8 and up) and the occupancy, I believe, was in the 30 %, perhaps it increased to 50% on Nov 13. All rooms are close to the beach. The rooms themselves are OK, but they should not be called Premium Suits. They are rooms, not suits. We had some minor issues with smells (mold for a day, perhaps the room had not been used for a while, but the AC worked well and next day the mold smell had disappeared; sewer smell for two days, I let our concierge Isasi know, she talked to maintenance, they drained something and there was no more sewer smell) Our concierge, Isasi, was very helpful, she understood we had some frustrations and did her best to make our stay enjoyable. The personnel at the Mahogany and West End restaurants are very friendly and helpful, always with a smile and a nice word. I am not very good with remembering names, so thank you all for your service. Very good wifi service, no interruptions, fast. The bad now: We have been advised to download and use the Azul app. As far as I am concerned, I found the idea behind it very good. Instead of getting a piece of paper with the information concerning bars, restaurants, activities, etc., you just open the app and see, for example, what restaurant is open that evening. Or, consult the menu and decide where you want to go based on your food preferences. Unfortunately, the information is never updated, so restaurants that we thought were opened, were not. The menus are inaccurate, either misleading or simply the restaurants were out of items and during the whole week never replenished them. Food: mediocre, and I am taking in consideration the low occupancy. I do understand that the variety is lower when the occupancy is low and this is the reason I do not qualify it as bad. For breakfast, they have orange juice and bubly, so you can have a decent Mimosa. They also have eggs and smoked salmon, which is what we had everyday. But, there were no cheeses (aside from the cream cheese served along the smoked salmon), cold cuts or pastries. They did have some "danishes", the kind and look you would get from a vending machine. They had only one jam (guava!). I mean, how difficult or expensive would have been to have 2 - 3 different jams, with at least one European/American sort, such as strawberry or apricot. Lunch we always got from the West End. Good jerk chicken and fries, I lived on them for 3 days and 3 days I simply skipped lunch. They did make paninis, burgers and sandwiches, but not really the "gourmet" food that Karisma advertises. This is the first resort I visited that does not have a beach restaurant and it has nothing to do with Covid pandemic (see Sandals next door, they have 3 beach restaurants, all opened in spite of their low occupancy). They advertise, and it shows up on the app, a beach lunch at Garfield House on Fridays and Saturdays, with BBQ Jamaican style, jerk pork, daily paella (whatever the daily means, as we never saw any paella), etc. I was very much looking forward to a different lunch on Friday, but, in spite of the app stating the Garfield House Beach would serve lunch, the restaurant stayed close and the same lunch eas the same as all previous 5 days. As for the evening, there are always 2 restaurants open. Italian is mediocre, we did not really like the carribean one (Ackee). We were pleasantly surprised by the Asian restaurant, the food was tasty and nicely served. As for the Mahogany, they served lobster two nights (Sunday and Wednesday) and it was very good. Other than that, I would again qualify it as mediocre, cafeteria style. Bars and drinks: the worst I have ever seen in a resort. They were consistently missing this and that, or they only had less than 1/2 ounce left in many bottles. What baffled me the most was the lack of Appleton rum from the bars. The knowledge of the barmans of mix drinks went from no knowledge at all to very professional. First time I asked for Tequila Sunrise, they apologized and told me they did not know what that is. Next day, I went to the Nesta bar and started explaining the barman how I wanted my drink made and he immediately said: oh,you want a Negroni, which is exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately, he could not make it for me, despite his good will, as there was no vermouth Martini red (he did go to another bar and brought back some red vermouth, but not enough for the recipe). BUT he made me the best Tequila Sunrise I ever had. The very bad: I probably left my sandals (flip flops) at the beach. Next morning, I went to the reception and asked if anyone found them. They looked in a drawer, they were not there and told me they would inquire with housekeeping. I told them, no big deal, but I would appreciate if they found and returned them to me. And I did not give it another thought, until next morning. Next morning, I woke up like usual at 6h00 and went to the beach. I chose my bed, sprayed it with alcohol, laid my towels and stayed there for about an hour , reading my morning newspapers on the tablet. Then, I left a couple of things at the beach, such as a beach bag (with a sunscreen and a disinfectant in it, nothing else), a red (airplane type) pillow and went for coffee. About an hour and a half later, I returned to my lounger to find the beach bag missing. I went to the reception and the lady there, very aggressively, told me that I am not allowed to reserve my spot and that they were absolutely entitled to remove my things. I draw their attention to the fact that if they wanted to free up the space, they should have removed the towels and my red pillow. Secondly, 80% of the sun loungers were free all day long, so it was not about me reserving the spot, but spending time at the beach, then going for a coffee, then coming back to the same spot. Which, by the way, the management should encourage, given the fact that they never wash or disinfect the sun loungers or the Bali beds. To make the story short, a bell boy looked for my bag and returned it to me, going on and on that I am not allowed to reserve the lounger and if I leave at noon to have lunch and I am away for more than an hour, I have to free up the space. First time in 25 years of traveling 2 to 3 times a year that anything like this happened to me. Especially since the number of loungers at the beach was at least 3 to 4 for each guest. And, in the context of the Covid 19 pandemic, nobody should have touched my stuff. Before going to Azul, and if food is important when choosing a resort, everyone can download the app and see what the menus are. Again, this is approx 60 to 70% accurate. And do not assume that everything on the menu is available or that the name or description of the dishes reflect what you will get (as a example, salmon carpaccio at Di Romagna is nothing else but the smoked salmon you get in the morning). In conclusion, I would not recommend this resort and I regret saying it, as many of the employees are friendly, hard working people and their livelihood depends on clientele. Management on the other hand should address the shortcomings and try to raise the quality of the services to what is advertised, i.e. 5 stars.

Visiting Jamaica during the pandemic was not only taking a chance to get away from hustle and bussel living in the US but so refreshing to feel the sunshine on your skin by the beach while listening to the waves. The people of Jamaica followed all of the covid guidelines by taking extra precautions to keep everyone safe. This hotel is beautiful and the staffs are exceptional, just to name a couple, MARIO one of the front desk staff was very polite, friendly, made sure that I was always taken care of. Please ask for him when you visit... Also Erick, one of the security guard made sure my friends and I were always safe walking during the night time, not that we needed it but we had so much chatting and getting to know the staffs. Overall the place was very clean, rooms spacious, and everyone was super friendly.
