On our third visit to Jamaica together my wife and I decided to give the Sandals brand a try. We had previously stayed at Couples Negril and Couples Tower Isle. We definitely had some higher expectations as the cost was about $500 more per person. In our view the Sandals brand always suggests a premium all-inclusive stay that is supposed to be the best however after 7 days at this resort we found the value was lacking in many areas. Below find a detailed review of our stay in September 2023. Arrival We arrived at the resort from the Montego Bay airport in about 1-1/2 hours. This is pretty typical for a resort that is in Negril. We were tired from the flight and excited to get into our room so that we can get to the beach. We arrived at 1:30pm so we were hoping for some lunch as we did not get any food on the flight. The moment we arrived we were pleasantly greeted with some cocktails and were given some paperwork to fill out because apparently the computer system was down. We finally got to the room at about 1:45 and were a little disappointed as the room did not have a balcony. The front door opened up to a busy hallway so there was no private place to hang your wet swim suits. Some of the other guests in similar rooms placed their luggage stands outside their door so they can hang their swim suits outside to dry. Since the windows opened up to the busy hallway there was no possibility to keep the shutters open so the room was fairly dark. Overall the room décor and the furnishings were of a higher quality. We did notice that some of the workmanship particularly the walls and ceiling were rushed and not acceptable by any standard. The fridge was fully stocked with white wine, beer, water, cola, and some fruit juices. There was also a bottle of red wine, wine glasses, water glasses, mugs, coffee maker, and kettle. The bathroom was clean and everything worked as expected. Based on the photos we were expecting a semi-private balcony so we decided to quickly get changed, eat some lunch, and visit the front desk to request a different room. We are both certified scuba divers so having a place to dry our swim suits was very important to us. Bayside Buffet The bayside restaurant has self-serve buffet for breakfast and lunch. The wait staff was always pleasant and professional. The restaurant is clean and tidy. They remove plates as soon as you are finished and always offer to get you a drink from the bar nearby. The buffet has good food however we found that food runs out quickly and they do not replenish as we would expect. For breakfast there are some options but this buffet is particularly troublesome with fairly large birds that are scavenging leftovers. Front Desk As I mentioned above we decided to request another room so we visited the front desk. At this time we had a chance to experience some of what the resort has to offer and we were a little disappointed. Below find some of the things that we felt were lacking: - No coffee shop and the Bunn automatic coffee machines were broken most of the time. They claimed to have a 24-hour self-serve ‘coffee station’ however it was not always available. The drip coffee was horrible and most of the other guests also mentioned they were surprised that this resort doesn’t have a coffee shop that serves specialty coffees. They are currently building a coffee shop which apparently will be open in November 2023. In our experience many other resorts have specialty coffee shops so it was very disappointing that this Sandals resort did not already have one. - No milk alternatives on the resort. - We asked for some Mojitos and were told that they cannot make this drink as there is no fresh mint available. - None of the bars at this resort had any lemon, lime, or orange wedges for your drinks. When we asked the front desk for another room with a balcony we were given push back. We were told that we need to wait to speak with a manager. After waiting 15 minutes we were told that there is no option for another room unless we pay extra. We declined to pay extra as we had already paid a premium to stay at this Sandals resort in comparison to other resorts that offer more value. After spending nearly 30 minutes frustrated talking with front desk we mentioned that we would post a review of our experience and only then were we offered another room. We accepted however we needed to wait until noon the following day to switch rooms. The new room had a semi-private outdoor sitting area with a table and two chairs by the front door. We also now had a wooden drying rack just outside the door. Finally we got to unpack and settle into our room. The Beach We have been to Negril before so we are well aware of the shallow beaches and calm waters. Previously we stayed at the Bloody Bay and this was our first at the Seven Mile Beach. Both beaches have plenty of vendors walking the beach constantly which can be a little annoying at times. We found that this beach had very small swimming areas, was quite swallow, and the boats were really obstructing the beautiful views. Occasionally you can smell the fumes from the boats as they cruised around. If you enjoy swimming in the ocean you may be disappointed as there was plenty of sea grass, the water is very swallow, and the swimming area is very small. The life guards will definitely call you out if you cross past the swim markers. Restaurants There were 5 restaurants at the resort and they just opened a 6th during our stay. 2 of the restaurants required reservations. All of the restaurants had great service and excellent food. We were fortunate enough to get a special invitation to the new restaurant, Brava, which serves Spanish tapas. It was delicious! Scuba Diving The dive team was very friendly, helpful, and professional. We went for a total of 4 dives and saw some dolphins, sting rays, lobsters, crabs, puffer fish, lion fish, and even a nurse shark. The captain Mudslide was quite entertaining and very professional. The waters were calm and all the equipment was in good working order. On each dive trip we were offered fresh fruit, tea, coffee, and pastries. The dive team handled all the loading and unloading of equipment except for the fins. Nearby Beaches Resort After talking with some of the other guests we discovered that many are visiting the nearby Beaches resort. We decided to make 2 visits to this resort and were pleasantly surprised that they have much more to offer. The coffee shop staff was very friendly and we finally got to sip on some delicious specialty coffees. The beach was slightly better as there was less sea grass, the swimming area was larger, and there were less boats. We also finally got some fresh coconuts from a beach vendor for $10 each and added some rum to them from the nearby bar. We noticed that the breakfast and lunch buffet offered more selection and no shortages of food. We were also pleased that this resort did have almond milk, fresh mint, and lemon and lime wedges. Conclusion We were expecting a premium experience and unfortunately Sandals Negril was a little disappointing. We found that we got better value at other resorts and the lack of some basic things like a coffee shop and milk alternatives was substandard. On the positive side there was plenty of staff everywhere so the service was quick and for the most part everyone was friendly. They currently have a new section under construction and we were fortunate that our room was far away as the construction is nonstop and the noises can be loud and annoying. The resort is also close to the road so there is quite a bit of road noise and there is also a small airport nearby so there are small propeller planes flying overhead occasionally throughout the day. …
