Beautiful beach; lots of trees, soft sand and shallow water. Food in buffet was good, Japanese rest. was awful, Italian rest. was passable; just eat the appetizers, Krystal was my least favorite for food but decorated nicely. Steak restaurant was outdoors and hot! Steak was good. Entertainment was as expected but a band came in one night playing PAN music; very high energy! The house Reggae band wasn't good . We had two teenagers with us and they were so bored! Played volleyball one day and Bean bag toss another. Liquor flowed freely. Beds were like rocks; hardest beds that I have ever slept on; but they will give you a mattress pad, if you complained. Room was spotless. It was brought to my attention that they just reopened in May and we arrived in June. Liked having bar service on the beach. The Jerk Shack on the beach, for lunch was wonderful. I probably would not return to this hotel because of the lack of activities.

I stayed here as a part of a party crew for a major event in Negril. The event was shut down by the Jamaican government after a viral video. My thing is the RIU knew we were coming but i don't think they prepared for us the way they would have prepared for other groups. There were over 100 people that paid in advance, so it wasn't a surprise. The regular activities that they normally have at RIU's was not done here until mid-week. For example- Staff Lead pool side activities didn't start until Thursday but most folks checked in that Monday. There was not a list of daily activities or events at the front desk either. I also witnessed Management berating at staff and that's a NO-NO. I'm a RIU Class member and have been to 2 properties in Montego Bay and 1 property in Punta Cana. So to experience this lack of interest in hotel guests was kind of surprising. I'm going to chalk it up to the Pandemic since most of those folks were off work almost a year and just opened back up. The workers were trying but they can only do so much. Another issue was we had to WALK TO GET BOTTLES OF WATER. There wasn't any water supplied in our room. of course they used the pandemic as an excuse but if you wanna minimize contact w/folks, you don't make guests walk to the front desk reception or the 24 hr lounge. Also, there was a ridiculous pool rule where we had to wear a face mask in the poolside bar to get a drink. like really??? wear a mask in wet water to get a drink? I would rate lower.

Just returned from a week-long vacation at the Palace. We have been to several RIU properties and have loved them all, but this one was the best. The grounds were well-kept, the beach was beautiful. The water was perfect-sandy bottom, no rocks and hardly any seaweed while we were there. Vendors will leave you alone if you simply say no thanks. They are not allowed to come up to you unless you are by the water. The rooms were clean and fine for the amount of time we spent in them. Charging phones was tricky, but always got it done. There was a problem with the water for a few hours, but it was fixed. We don’t let things like that ruin our vacation. Problems occur, we just roll with it! Our fridge was stocked, we always had water. No mini bar, but so what. Not there to drink in the room. Bartenders and waiters/waitresses on the beach were quick to bring drinks. The restaurants were all excellent. We opted to eat at the second seating and yes, we had to wait but again, no big deal. Grabbed drinks and met new people while waiting in line for our table. The restaurant staff was amazing at accommodating our large group. We did eat at the buffet and found the food good and the servers were always ready and willing to wait on you. The 24 hour lounge had great food too for that afternoon or late night snack. Special shout out to O’Brian and Rashane for always taking care of us. The Jerk Hut did not disappoint and when it became the Pizza Hut, we enjoyed that also. All staff were serious about following COVID protocols. The best feature of this RIU was the entertainment staff. Spotlight, Storm, Kristoff, Donnel, Bubbles, and Chocolate Thunder made the vacation one we will never forget. Their attention to our family was outstanding. We had so much fun with them on the beach, at the pool and at the show. Managers were visible and always stopped to talk if we asked them something. Been to Jamaica eight times and absolutely love the Jamaican people. Treat them with respect, get to know them, tip well and you should have no problem. We would definitely return.

First let me start with the good… Spotlight in the entertainment department is exceptional and made our stay great. The entire entertainment team works very hard day and night and should all be commended for a job well done. The grounds were beautiful and very well kept. Now for the bad… The food left a lot to be desired. We visited the Italian restaurant and the lasagne I ordered was not even edible. The noodles were hard and the taste was awful. We visited the Japanese Steak House and didn’t even make it past the door as the service was so poor. I arrived there first and was waiting for my Husband who was only five minutes behind me. I was told I could not enter until he arrived and the tone of the person who greeted me was nothing less than offensive. We decided not to eat there and did not return during our stay. The Tapas restaurant was actually very good (great food and exceptional customer service). The buffet was a train wreck. Nothing was self-serve (I understand COVID restrictions are in play) and portion sizes were small. The bacon in the morning was half cooked and most food we tried tasted poorly. We visited to celebrate my Birthday and I was looking forward to much relaxation on the beach. This was interrupted constantly by aggressive vendors who wanted to sell us everything under the sun including marijuana. Not five minutes would go by without someone yelling at us to come by their stuff. It truly took away the peace and tranquility we were seeking and was overwhelming. Riu Tropical Palace needs to manage this better. Open a time frame for vendors to come and sell and have a designated spot for this to take place. Aside from that your guests experience should come first and they should not feel that they have to be solicited constantly. This was beyond disappointing. During our stay we found ourselves without water in our room for a very long period of time. Started mid day and went through the night. There was no obvious plan by the resort to resolve this and no sense of urgency. Guest, after guest had to call the front desk to get information. Why do you not have a communication plan for situations like this? Telling us a pipe broke and someone is coming tomorrow is not a plan. Start moving guests to available rooms. We requested a new room and were accommodated but the water pressure in that room was also poor. The move also meant we had to move across the resort which was not convenient but we were thankful for the new room with at least some running water. This was a public health issue and Riu did not handle it well at all. This is why we won’t be back! Jamaica is beautiful and this was our first trip there. We will definitely be back to Jamaica but will not stay at a Riu because of the poor experience. This is unfortunate because as said the resort is beautiful.

Here is my detailed review for our 10 day COVID restricted trip to Riu Tropical Bay. It’s a long review but hopefully gives visitors a good idea of what to expect while Riu struggles to gain traction through COVID. Room: Chargers fall out of loose electrical sockets. Woke up to my watch and phone not charged a few times. It takes 10-15 minutes for hot water to come out of the shower head in the morning. My toilet flapper chain broke three times. The room is clean. I tipped maid service daily but they slacked off on the final few days of our stay. Amenities: No 24/7 room service. You can’t take any food to your room from the dining hall. The pools close promptly at 6PM. This is not for our safety, but for their bottom line to pay less employees. They will pack people like sardines into the shows though! The free water sports were nice and we did them often. Some shows were great and some not so great. We paid $60 per person for a snorkeling trip with the Riu’s onsite partner Scuba Caribe and snorkeled for maybe 20 minutes at only one site and a boat ride for the remaining 3 hours. It was the worst snorkeling trip I’ve ever been on in the Caribbean. Food/Drinks/Restaurants: At 6:10 the first round of the 20 max restaurant spots were almost always filled and no reservations allowed. Most wait staff were really really friendly at the buffet (inside morning and lunch crew were my absolute favorites!) The small lady with the bright eyeshadow, she’s probably the resorts’ best server, hands down. The restaurant servers were unfriendly and miserable. The restaurant service was embarrassing. We were never asked for our drinks in any of the restaurants. If you don’t want the wine they have, you will likely need to leave the restaurant, go get them yourself from the bar and return to your seat like I did. The breakfast buffet was good, little choice - but still good. Lunch and dinner choices were scaled down so much we rarely ate at these times. It was like dog food and a few items were cold. Dinner desserts were mostly good. The 24/7 center had old popcorn and nacho sauce, dried out hot dogs and patties, but good fruit bowls. The jerk/pizza hut was the best of all and we ate lunch there the most. All of the drinks were amazing. We didn’t have one bad drink during the trip. The bartenders next to the terrace are on point! Activities: they have great employees running the games and activities. All were friendly and funny, welcoming. They remember you and come and chat when they see you later in the week. I loved that. We had many laughs and enjoyed playing beanbag toss tournaments (cornhole!) with Jamaican “make the rules as you go” style play. The beach is clean, the water is warm and clear. It was overcast and rained a few days. Plenty of chairs, but sometimes people saved them all day with towels like any other resort. Covid testing: Unorganized and unprofessional. There are no appt times, yet you have to make an appt. There is no control method. They enter your name on a spreadsheet and they don’t label the specimens. They don’t confirm who is being tested. If someone goes and tests out of order from the spreadsheet, that wouldn’t be good. Overall rating: 4 out of 10. Games and Breakfast crew gets 2 out of those 4 points. There are still too many nonsense COVID restrictions like the 6PM pool curfew, lack of food options and poor restaurant food quality/service. The mosquitos are HORRIBLE. Do not forget bug spray. I would call to ask about the current restrictions before booking your trip.
