Our first visit was in April 2017 everything was absolutely perfect as expected. This year a few things have changed.. First of all they have closed the Riu Reggae so all those patrons are now at the Riu Palace too. Not terrible but it went from a very quiet relaxing holiday to club med. A much younger and noisier crowd. Not what we signed up for but it didn’t ruin our holiday. We are in our 30’s but wanted peace and quiet away from our busy lives and children Secondly, everything was open but the restaurants alternated nights. Didn’t bother us as dinner always seemed to be the worst meal of the day. Jerk chicken for lunch and an insanely huge breakfast held us over. Thirdly, everyone wears masks as they move around but take them off while sunbathing, in the pool, eating and drinking. Pretty normal these days. The hotel did their own testing for the return journey, we picked our 5 minute time slot but the line took an hour. Not sure what the breakdown was but being in line with your favorite drink isn’t a terrible thing. Fourth and lastly, the negatives.. no drinks in your room. No coffee no water but worst of all.. you guessed it.. no booze. You can however go and get coffee and water from reception and booze from any bar and take it to your room. The most frustrating thing for us about the whole place is stupid but it’s was the straws.. they will break if you are even light handed with them. Even during sucking up your drink. I would suggest you bring your own large container (many people did) or maybe your own plastic curly straw or something. With every drink I would request multiple straws and would have some everywhere I went. Frustrating but not the end of the world. Try the Bob and Rita cocktail. I must have had about 15 everyday so good! Over all a great experience as always. The staff are all amazing from the front desk to the waiters and entertainers. We truly had a great time. Shout out to Dr Fun Fun and his laugh but everyone was amazing. We will be back.

After reading so many great reviews I decided to book my this location for my husbands 40th. I called at least 20 times ahead to schedule private dinners, massages etc. and not one employee mentioned there was a government lockdown. Needless to say our trip was not what we expected. Where do I begin??? First off, the food is absolute garbage. Being a foodie and not being able to enjoy authentic cuisine or just good food while on vacation sucks. The only gem was a cook in the buffet named Kemoy who made me an Amazing pasta each evening. Also Clarke at the front desk he was extremely helpful. We were locked down during his birthday and weren’t able to enjoy anything’s outside of what I already planned ahead on the resort. The massage was great. The so called private dinner on the beach was decent but the music sucked. Like who wants to hear that depressing music during a romantic dinner. We went three days confined to a resort when we could have done the same at home. The entire Adult resort shuts down by 11:30 or so and it’s incredibly BORING, total snooze fest. Maybe that’s what some people like but we came to have a good time. While it’s understandable to cater to different age groups not everyone vacations to be sitting in the room. We packed our speaker to enjoy our own music at some point. One night in particular we sat in the jacuzzi on the balcony listening to music after they shut the resort down super early. Security came at 11:45 telling us to turn it off. Definitely made us feel like we should have gone elsewhere when we weren’t bothering anyone and all our neighbors were playing music too! There is no top shelf liquor...understood but the liquor provided on the resort is watered down to the point you don’t even get tipsy. Be careful of the staff. A guy at the front provided his contact information in case we needed rides etc. long story short he over charged us as well as took us to a destination he knew was closed to make money. I do not recommend this resort to anyone!! The reviews would lead you to believe this place is great and it’s really not. He’s 40 and the resort is too boring for him smh.

So... upon arrival it was nice. But it quickly escalated down hill from there. We were escorted in temp check formalities handled. Given a barely chilled cheap Champagne in 80+ degree weather and shown to the check in. Friendly check in staff? Negative!! There was 2 checking at our arrival and about 5 people behind the counter. The guy that started to assist us basically gives us the wifi code to schedule our covid test upon return with no instructions on when it needed to be taken ect. Just here, log on sign up for the test to go home. We both scheduled them, only to find out AFTER they needed to be the very next day it was not rapid in minutes results. Had we of not asked how we get the results we would have been scheduled too late missed our flights an forced to extend our stay. I'm not going to sugar coat and give the high lows because unfortunately there seemed to be a consistent amount of lows that need t ve addressed. We had lunch while waiting to get into our unprepared rooms at the assigned check in time.... so let's get into this lunch. The chef was very polite and hamming it up a little as expected for the guest. But possibly spent too much time on that because the jerk chicken we were so eagerly anticipating was good n DRY. Not a bit of moisture in the dark or white meat, there was a very limited selection of vegetables and fresh salad but rice n peas and . We sat and had drink orders taken by our server who somehow forgot and we sat waiting choking on dry jerk chicken until another person came around and fulfilled the orders. Once we made it to our room, the 2 beds that were requested where not there.. Picked up the phone to call. Ha!!! No working line. Back downstairs to the front desk and spoke to the less than enthusiastic manager who didn't have an ounce of care or concern, but 1 hour later we had the bed. In the meantime I open the fridge and the "fully stocked" fridge was EMPTY. Not even water. Back to the front desk. And told due to covid we can't stock the bars. Yet the same hands that would stock it are the same hands that are ar the bar making the watered down beverages we had all week... Now I'll tell you this, "due to covid" was an ongoing trend the entire stay. Gift shop closed due to covid, entertainment unavailable due to covid. When asked why there was no music and nothing happening, the entertainment director also told us, I was having lunch I have to eat too I work 9 -12 hours so I need to eat. Loss for words.....actually I had a few I chose to not use them.. The frozen drinks were not even slush, they were weak and they also where melted upon making them. One evening someone urinated in the elevator when we got off an told the maintenance man who was outside the elevator, he said no that we're mistaken... So clearly the reclusive odor and the very visible wet floor was imagined. Dinner....on site... just sad. The choices were limited and still just didn't hit the spot. My friend and I both are very well versed in West indian food and the lack of flavor and just overall experience was very underwhelming. One evening we waited for an obscene amount of time just to go to the "most requested " steakhouse to what I'll just say was comical to say the least, the salmon was dry as well. The steak was thin and flavorless. The lobster terrible texture and scent. It may have not been kept at the proper temperature it tasted spoiled. Just so much wrong... the festival the entire time was a loss as well, dark hard and crunchy. Breakfast ONE day was a total hit , that came after a bit of soft persuasion from my friend to ask for the meal to be cooked like it was made for their own family. And yea indeed it was. FINALLY. One good meal.... The sister resort next door however...The jerk from Pepes awesome, the frozen drinks and ANYTHING made by McKeshia?? PERFECTION!! It his us. We stated at the wrong darn place clearly. It was older but the setting was made for people to enjoy themselves, drinks made with care, and the overall atmosphere was inviting. It was a sad moment in time when it was time to make that 1 min walk to the Palace... Overall this was not a place I'd recommend, so many of the staff was nonchalant, passing the issue to others, honestly a bit lazy. I will say the 2 older ladies in housekeeping 1 of whom was the manager,, did a survey and they did their part trying to fill in the gaps that they could. Down to the missing sign with directions on how to get water and coffee for the room. The staff in the restaurants also gave surveys that seem to out a heavy emphasis on filling them out, yet it seemed very odd with all the issues. Made me wonder of they read them. One other thing to revisit, was the fact that the restaurants on site were closed most days and when they were open were pretty limited days and hours. You were reduced to eat from the buffets. And that was of the women behind the counter would stop talking amongst themselves long enough to actually acknowledge you to give you your selections. Riu Management.... you have got to do better. People come to feel welcomed, have a fun and relaxing experience, not to feel stressed about a meal and about asking for assistance. That also was a thing.. In asking information you had to ask on them what, where is it, how do I get there, what time. If you did no probing you were on your own. Ex. Your room is number 2867 . You'd expect take this hallway to the elevator and get off on floor #... No..this is your room number...figure out the rest... Dinner is in that area.... figure it out on your own. Most places provide instruction and information so you know times locations ect... Not here. Your left to wonder and hunt down help to guide you every single step of the way.

Overall my experience was very good. It helped that the weather was amazing for all 8 days we were there. The hotel itself is set up very well, and in 5 to 10 years when the palm trees mature, the resort will be amazing. The food was good to very good depending on the day. The rooms were very modern and comfortable. The beach is excellent with plenty of trees to find shade. The service was very good. I felt Dinor was the hardest working person at the resort. I would see him cleaning the beach and pool area in the morning, and then he would make me his own signature drink at the bar in the afternoon (with a smile). Sanya AKA "Chocolate" was an absolute gem. We met my first night at the resort and caught up every day of my vacation. She is so awesome, made me feel special, and she is someone that I will never forget. My only complaint is allowing other guests to bring and play (extremely loud) their own bluetooth speakers. The resort had music playing all day (which was fine). There is NO need for multiple people playing their own music at the same time. It was rude and very disrespectful to the other guests. Outside music should be BANNED from the hotel, especially if it is being played at an obnoxious level. Too many times I was forced to move from a spot that I was originally comfortable in. One suggestion, allow karaoke to go past 10:30, especially if people who signed up can't sing because of the time limit. The DJ played every night starting at 10:30. There is no reason, for one night during the week, karaoke couldn't start at 9:00 and end at midnight. It is a fun way to get to know to other guests, and it's great entertainment. I have never heard of RIU until this trip, but I will definitely consider staying at another RIU resort in the future.
