Secrets St. James Montego Bay boasts a picturesque location esteemed by many for its scenic ocean views and tranquil seclusion, although some guests have noted difficulties with transportation. While the hotel's live entertainment garners appreciation, the atmosphere is met with mixed reviews due to the music and dated rooms. Visitors have raised concerns about cleanliness and the need for room renovations, alongside slow and sometimes inconsistent service. Moreover, the value proposition of the resort is often questioned, with guests pointing out steep prices and unanticipated charges, hinting that the luxury experience may not always meet expectations.

I honestly feel like I was in a different resort after looking at the other favorable reviews. This place is absolutely terrible. The rooms and buildings are run down and dirty. There were door knobs missing, buckled floors and chipped paint. Our tub was not cleaned from the previous guest, as there was soap scum in the bottom and we had worm-like bugs in our sinks. At check-in, you are forced to speak with the time-share people who are rude and relentless in their duty to sign you up for a presentation. One girl said, "Quit being bougie" when we said we weren't interested. It is impossible to get a pool or beach chair unless you take an item down at 6:30-7 AM to reserve a spot. There is only sporadic wait staff at the pools or beach... so you serve yourself from the bar, which isn't handy for some of the pool/beach areas. The pool staff tries to get a Spring Break vibe going by spraying foam and playing loud thumping music... which is fine, if that's what you came to do. We were given a 45 minute wait at the Italian restaurant and a 90 minute wait at the seafood restaurant... so trying to have dinner is a major feat. We finally got room service. The food is average, at best... the meal we enjoyed the most was the jerk chicken at the walk up beach shack... which has about 4 tables... so you end up standing to eat your lunch. This resort does not have the leisure or dining space for the number of guests they receive. And do I even need to mention the graphic hard porn channels on the TV... on the regular TV as you click through the channels... not a private channel or pay channel. It was absolutely disgusting! We ended up leaving after only 2 days... we didn't care that we were losing our vacation $$... that's how bad Secrets Montego Bay is! When my husband went to inform them of our early check out, they acted stunned and said the manager, Serene Lloyd, would call our room within 1 hour... she didn't call. When we were catching our ride to the airport, again the check-out staff acted perplexed at our dissatisfaction and said Serene Lloyd would call or email us... that hasn't happened either! From the reviews and website, we thought we were paying for a quiet, luxury beach vacation. If you are looking for the same, this IS NOT the resort for you! This is a run-down hotel with poor service, rude and inattentive staff, insufficient quantity of amenities for guests, average food (if you can get any!) and a dismissive management staff.

Our beachfront room was spacious with a gorgeous view. Loved the relaxed atmosphere of the resort! Even though I avoided the entertainment, there were activities going on. The service was slower than I anticipated between courses but I ended up appreciating that by the end of our stay instead of rushing too quickly through meals. Absolutely loved the beaches, but glad I packed water shoes, it was easier to navigate through shells and rocks. People wake up early and claim all the chairs with resort towels or other personal items. However, I had no problem laying on a towel in the sand. The gifts shops were cute and convenient. They even played movies in the courtyard at night. I would definitely recommend this resort!

I'll start with the food. It is mediocre at best and dinner portions are small. Nothing served at the beach or near the pool was better than something I'd take out of my freezer and throw into the microwave. I won't remember anything I at there except the dinner we had at Breathless. The staff is friendly and the room was kept exceptionally clean. The excursions were fun, but the lunches they serve are bland. In spite of it all we had an good time and Secrets is a "nice" property with beautiful views and a relatively fun night life.

Our room is absolutely beautiful, with stunning sea view. Unfortunately that’s as good as it gets, noisy as hell slamming doors, pool rap music when we arrived yesterday around the pool, it was so loud you couldn’t have a conversation. Seriously hope it isn’t the same today! My husband went for coffee and a walk at 8am, absolutely no sun loungers on beech or pool, all reserved. Evening meal last night was delicious but miserable staff. Breakfast only ok at best.

We had a lovely stay. The staff could not have been more welcoming, helpful and happy. We stayed in the Preferred Club which I would describe as a hotel within a hotel, its own pool, own little bar, buffet food and drinks served 7am to 10pm. Ocean view twin room was perfect and spacious. Definitely upgrade to preferred unless you are coming for the party vibe! You have access to all the restaurants - it does feel a little like ‘DisneyLand’ in that area as all the restaurants are clubbed together next to the entertainment space but it’s logical to have it that way. Unless you have a ‘butler’ (extra fee) or are a large group you cannot make reservations…. Be prepared to wait, they tend to work on 6pm and 8pm sittings… Our favourite was the fish restaurant Oceana, it was away from the main hub so a lot quieter and the food was amazing - we ate there 3 times . 2 negatives…. 1) this is an incentive hotel for American companies…. So we had 2 very large groups in the preferred space. 1 group was so loud, shouting, yelling, obnoxious. it was horrible and really ruined the calm atmosphere of the pool area. (The other group - younger demographic - were actually a lot more considerate) 2) the BIGGEST negative was the race to the sun loungers - if you weren’t out by 7am you were too late! Mostly due to the fact that not every pair of beds had a parasol. An easy solution for the hotel to fix really which would make people’s stay a lot less stressful. If they do replace them… please make them easier to move…. The marble based ones are SO heavy Would we come back possibly.

We spent an enjoyable 6 days at St. James. We were in the preferred area, which was a benefit for two reasons, one was better beach accommodations. The beach at St. James is smaller so things can get a little crowded. Being in preferred gave us more room. Second, was our butler service. That is a MUST! Request Tajae or Darwin...those guys were the best! Very attentive to our needs the entire stay. Our first time staying in Montego Bay, we usually go to Negril. Being closer to the airport was a plus, compared with a1.5 hour trip. The people of Jamaica were as friendly as usual. I think this was our 11th trip to the island and it never disappoints! As far as the travel advisory??? "Not to worry mon"! Enjoy a beautiful place and island.

The staff and resort were good but the food at the restaurants were okay. We did enjoy the drinks and buffet. Information and resort map were not shared/explained very well. An overall good experience.

If you want a Sunbed/lounger/chair at this resort you need to be an early riser. All reserved with a towel by 7:45am. What is frustrating is they then go hours unoccupied, depriving other guests. The resort management are aware of the issue but don’t seem to be doing anything about it. Such a shame.

Excellent food and top notch accommodations. I really liked that the restaurants did not require reservations...it made it so much easier and if you had to wait to be seated, you could relax and enjoy the live entertainment at the piano bar.
