Massive resort, food was decent for the most part, compared to the Riu in Cancun, i didnt like that most of the restaurants were self serve instead of ordering. Some of the food in the nicer places where we did order was not as pictured and was clearly a very different dish, but it was still really good. Drinks were really good though and they had a massive selection. The themed parties are in a much smaller area than the cancun location, same layout for the most part, but only two or three of the four are at that location, and they dont offer free transportation to one or two of them?? That was weird compared to cancun. The white party is on resort but not by the pool so it wasnt bad but eh. Towel stalls were frequently out with a 30 min- hour long wait, but it happens. Pools were nice and clean. Room was nice but they gave us two fulls pushed together and they were either on sliders or wheels so id wake up in a massive crack between the beds as they moved in the night. They do take safety and security very serious too which was nice, anytime we left or came back on to resort grounds via a shuttle, they made sure to check, and if we ride shared with people not at our resort, they took their ID so that they knew they werent sneaking on or something. Worth it but ended up eating at the buffets for the most part to be able to find something we really enjoyed. The beachfront of the resort is the busiest and most lively among that strip and they had beachside drink service which was nice, beach was actually super clean and the water wasnt washing up any rocks or shells (which we like some to keep) but also means you dont have to worry about getting pelted with rocks and stuff everytime a wave comes in like you do at Saona Island.

Riu Republica review - Sunwing
Aug 4-11th out of Montreal

Transfer: Bus shuttled us from the plane to the terminal where we waited through a winding line to get through to customs (took about an hour). There’s an e ticket firm to fill out prior to travel. Used Nexus Tours, organized by Sunwing, to get from the airport to the hotel. We landed at 2pm, luggage was already off the plane and off the carousel so it was easy/quick to pick up and then head to the hotel transfer area. You can check in with your tour carrier and they will direct you to a bus with a number associated with it. There are lots of people there who want to help with baggage, you can trust them, just tip a couple pesos or US dollars. They will get you to where you need to go, as there are so many buses that it gets quite confusing. We waited there for about an hour and then once we left it took roughly 40min to get to the Riu, as we were the last stop of about 5 hotel complexes. It was 5pm when we got to the hotel. I suggest getting a private transfer, negotiate a price, $40US for 2-4 people is reasonable.

Check in: Check in was quiet and quick, however, it may have been the time of day as we had also seen it quite busy at times. We were able to negotiate where our room would be located, we had booked a junior suite but since the complex is so big we asked that it be located in closer proximity to the beach. We were given 2 old school key cards and 2 towel cards. The towel cards are $20US to replace but the towel guys are good about giving the cards back if you come back with only one towel, will explain later. The key cards I believe are free to replace but the identifier bracelet you get (yellow) is $200US to replace.

Room: The junior suite we were given was on the 2nd floor of a 3 floor building fairly close to the main pools. It was a bit of a walk from the lobby area. One of the elevators on day one wasn’t working but it worked by day 2 or 3. The room A/C is operated by a key card in the wall slot as soon as you enter. We kept one card there the whole week. The A/C when we first entered was set at 19 which was a bit cool but it was nice and by day 3 the maids had changed it to 21 and it was hard to adjust back down after that. Since it is cool to sleep, we used a blanket found in the closet which provided some comfort. If you can, I suggest bringing your own pillow. There are 6 drawers for clothing storage and lots of places/space to store your luggage. There is a couch and coffee table, a decent sized fridge, fully stocked with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, plus you get 2 big bottles of water daily, which is definitely needed. There are 4 hard liquor dispensers with mediocre liquor in them and not full. There is also a coffee machine if needed. The bathroom had a toilet, a double sink vanity, a large mirror and a walk-in shower with portable nozzle, which we did not mind, but a rain shower head might have been nicer. They also provide an adequate hair dryer and lots of soap and shampoo/conditioner. On occasion if we woke up late and missed cleaning services, we had to call down to get more towels and to get the bed made up but the ladies work super hard and are around all day. We also had to call down to get more water delivered but they always accommodated. Do not drink the tap water, it is clearly marked as not potable. Make sure the balcony sliding door (balcony comes equipped with a drying rack, two chairs and a table) is shut tight for the A/C to work properly. Otherwise it develops lots of condensation and the floors become slippery. There is a self programmable safe as well to store your valuables.

Wifi: The wifi was very adequate throughout the whole resort, even down on the beach.

Pool Complex: There are at least 6 pools although we only went to 3 of them at the beach end of the resort. One of which is considered the ‘party pool’ and has a swim up bar. The pool is open generally from about 8am-7pm but they don’t really close (just the bar area and music) and we took full advantage of late night swims into the wee hours of the morning. Word of warning, the swim up bar pool, where all the shenanigans occur, can be very sketchy in terms of water quality, I suggest NOT putting your head under water. This pool tends to become murky from all the spilled drinks and pee all day. It was tolerable but after a while, if not drunk, we did not spend much time in it. There are plenty of pool chairs, even when you come down at 1pm. We did, however, secure chairs most days with towels and towel clips before noon. Just be aware that if left unattended, your towel may get swiped by a drunk person who cannot find theirs, which happened to us. Luckily the towel guys were reasonable and did not deny our second towel card. There is limited shade in the party pool area but lots at the other pools. There are servers who come around to bring drinks and there is always a drink of the day brought around. However, we found going up to the bar was quicker, on the outside of the pool; look for Martinez, Alex and Samuel, they are the best. They have a complete list of all drinks and liquor available. We tended to stick with vodka and mix although their margaritas are also good. Bring a Bubba or insulated container, less trips to the bar and keeps your drink cold. Mimosas are popular in the morning and they have their own version of brut, which is very drinkable. Do not let anyone tell you drinks are watered down, watch them, they fill it with as much alcohol as you want. If you want it “fuerte”, then tell them. They will definitely accommodate. We did not see any defecation in the pool, which caused it to close early, but there was a puking incident that forced early closure. The entertainment staff provide daily entertainment and music with various dance contests and the like. The pool next to the party pool has daily noon water aerobics which ends up being quite entertaining. There is a water slide, which we say but never tried. Friends said it was fun but only open until 5pm and closed for maintenance on Wed. The 3 pools further away from the beach are quieter but there is still a swim up (if I remember correctly). We did not spend any time there. People come from all over but we mainly ran into Brits, Americans and Europeans (particularly Spain and Holland). I’d say the age range is from about 25-40, we are 50+ and still managed to have a great time partying.

Beach: The beach is a short walk from the pool complex and has a jerk chicken and hotdog station for daily snacking. The sand is soft and white and for the most part the beach area was clean with lots of seating. There are LOTS of vendors selling lots of different things. We were told prices are cheaper for excursions if booked by someone on the beach, although we did not try. The water was a bit too rough for my liking and you can really get caught up in the wave action and riptide. The air is cooler by the beach, if looking for some relief from the heat, and the water is beautiful and fairly shallow. You can bring drinks down to the beach. I did not see any beach drink service the one day we spent down there.

Buffet: The buffet was fairly extensive with lots of options, there were different stations like bread, salad, dessert, Asian, Italian, Mexican, traditional Dominican etc. They had breakfast until 11am then lunch 12:30-3 (or maybe 4) and dinner I think from 5:30-10pm. The specialty restaurants were Kulinarium, Asian Fusion, Italian, Indian and Steakhouse. The Steakhouse is the only one you need to be there by 6pm to make a reso for the night as it fills up. We really enjoyed the Asian restaurant and the Italian. They have a set menu at the Steakhouse (a la carte) where the rest are all buffet style. We say many men in shorts and flip flops in all restaurants, however, women cannot wear a bathing suit at dinner, for the most part women have no dress code. Most men seemed to at least wear collared shirts and close toed shoes. There is a snack bar open during the day at the end of the main buffet, and a second buffet at the opposite end of the resort, away from the beach. If you wanted a bottle of wine you had to pay extra but if you get to know the servers well, they may let you take one for free. Best server was Alejandro at the buffet then the Italian restaurant. He was very accommodating and remembered us each day. We tipped a couple bucks (either US or pesos) each meal, but we noticed many do not. It is a personal choice.

Fitness Facility/Spa: Spa seemed to be pricey, as they often are, and we did not use the facilities. The fitness room had about 5-6 cardio machines and some free weights and a somewhat working cable machine. Free weights I believe only went up to 50lbs.

Animals: There are about 5-6 resort cats. We brought them cat treats from home, which they were spoiled with daly, when they were out and about. A couple are skittish but friendly. Does not seem to be a bother, nor do they go hungry. It is hot during the day so for the most part they come out around dinner time. I did get mosquito bites, but not as many as some tips, probably because of the heat. We did have a beetle in our room and we saw one cockroach at one of the outdoor bars.

Bars/Nightclub: There are many bars around the complex. We stayed mostly at the Lobby Bar, which was very hot most nights, no real air circulation. The second bar we discovered later in the week that we hung out in in the evening was on the other side of the lobby closer to the water slides. It had much more air circulation, and was a bit quieter. The problem with these bars is they close at 12 midnight and 11pm respectively. If you want to continue partying beyond that the only bars open are the sports bar (small, crowded and loud but has late night snacks like burgers and hotdogs), or Pacha, the night club. It is open until 3am. They really do shut all the lights off in the lobby bar at midnight I guess to get people to leave. Pacha is lit with lots of music, dancing and people and the night we went it cleared out around 2am. The bartenders are really good there and we never waited very long for a drink. The music is very loud so it is hard to chat and it was quite young for the most part until after about 2am.

Riu Party Complex: There are several parties throughout the week, usually every other day. We missed the Pink Party at the Riu Party Complex on the Friday (located at the Riu Bambu) as we arrived at the hotel too late that day to get ready and grab the transfer. They are usually from 3-7pm and they provide school buses to get people back and forth. People usually dress up and bring a Bubba for drinks. There is a Jungle party on Monday, which we attended and had fun at. The pool at the complex is knee deep and many people were in it at a time so if you are not into crowds and loud music (DJ plays all day) then it is not for you. There are at least 2 bars that we saw and apparently they also serve snacks. There is also VIP bottle service, cheapest is a bottle of vodka I believe for $200US, then you get your own couch area and mix. We did not take advantage of that, but friends did (they were invited by randoms and they enjoyed it). There is also a White party on the Wed at the Riu Republica at night at the entertainment stage. And it alternates to a Neon party on opposite weeks. We hit the White Party and it was fun with dancing and loud music and lots of people. What was good was that we did not have to travel to it as it was at our hotel. The bad part would be if it rained as there is no real shelter.

Medical Facilities: I was one of the unfortunate ones who had to make use of the medical facilities. They are open 9-6pm with a break from 1-3pm. Dr Edwin DeLaCruz was great. He contacted my Canadian insurance through work and quickly was able to establish direct billing. I had a combination of heat stroke, too much dehydration from the heat and from drinking and must have picked up a mild virus (lots of coughing and chills). This was as a result of the first two days there. By day 3 I could barely get out of bed and ended up seeing the doc on day 4. I got a saline and vitamin IV drip for about an hour plus he gave me extra vitamin C, cough syrup, two electrolyte drinks and some tablets to get rid of the virus (2 days worth). By the next day I was feeling about 75% and by the day before we left I was closer to 90% feeling better. We did see some guys with injuries who came in and the doc does his best to treat all at once if he is able. Luckily for my health insurance, it cost me nothing to be seen or to get the medication I needed. Advice, drink tonnes of water during the day. Try to stay cool when you can. The heat this week was truly unbearable.

Checkout/Airport Transfer: Check out was quick and easy, just brought our cards (pool and room) to the front desk and they provided us with an exit ticket to show our transfer driver plus they cut off our wristband. We decided to take a private transfer home through Go Fun Tours, it is usually $60 per car to the airport but we negotiated to $40 because we have used this service before for excursions on the island. They dropped us off right at the terminal where we checked into the airline. Once bags were dropped, we passed through security where we showed our exit eticket and boarding passes.

I found RUI Republica to be an overall average experience. Unlike some reviews I’ve read, I did not encounter bugs or dirty rooms, which was a relief. However, the rooms had only three single outlets, and in our room, only one was functional, which was inconvenient.

You can tell the building has endured a few hurricanes, with visible damage from moisture and sea water. The wear and tear on the buildings and pools is noticeable, but it might be easier to overlook if the food were better. Unfortunately, the food was the biggest disappointment—mediocre at best. Meals often seemed like leftovers, and all the restaurants were buffet-style with limited variety or freshness.

Unlike RUI Cancun, this location lacks a snack or coffee bar open after hours. If you’re hungry late at night, your only option is leftover hamburgers collected from the buffets and stored in the sports bar. They are literally stacked on top of each other, raising concerns about cross-contamination.

The spa was also disappointing. We booked a couples massage, but it felt like we paid just to have oil rubbed on us—definitely not worth the cost.

The entertainment was enjoyable, but the app’s schedule was often incorrect, which was frustrating. Service was inconsistent, and the resort felt extremely understaffed for the number of guests.

My best assessment is that this is a budget-friendly vacation option. If you can afford a different resort, I’d recommend going elsewhere. However, if this is within your budget, here are some helpful tips:

Go out for dinner. There are great restaurants in the Plaza San Juan area.
Bring an extension cord for the limited outlets in the room.
Be prepared to pivot and adjust your expectations.
Overall, while there were some positives, the experience left much to be desired.

Was a little worried about this resort after reading many negative reviews about it and was thinking about booking somewhere else. Being in our 60’s was not looking for a spring break party resort. But as it turns out, it was a nice time.
Check in was easy and quick, even was given a choice of where our room would be. (I had e-mailed the resort asking for a more quiet room location) Had to wait about an hour before room was ready because we got there around 2:00. At 3:00 we got our keys and bellman assisted with our luggage to the room.

Some areas of the resort did have a sewer smell, and the grounds were well maintained. Lots of palm trees everywhere.

Room was nice, a little musty, but I had planned for that and took a small bottle of room spray. The outlets in the room were as most have described – not many and the ones that were there were very loose and worn out. They did have USB plug by the bed, but it was broke and unusable. I took a 3 way plug adapter and used the plug where the coffee maker sits and plugged my 4 way USB plug to keep all our electronics charged.

Our house keeper was amazing….Room was cleaned every day very nicely and even got towel art every day (we tip pretty well so that might have had something to do with it. Water/sodas/beer/coffee was refilled every day (also tip left in the fridge)
Shower was great with the most water pressure I have ever had at a resort. Only had issue one afternoon with no hot water – only warm – was back to normal later that evening

We stayed mostly at the pool by the ocean to the left as you face the ocean. This one is not the party scene, mostly old people like us!!! But it did have a swim up bar but it was not too busy or crazy like the other swim up. They had waiter drink service on most days and hardly any line at the bar if you wanted self-service. Liquor was mostly local brands, but did have some higher level (Smirnoff vodka and Jim Beam bourbon for example) but no grapefruit (I like vodka and grapefruit) Beach was nice but water was too rough to swim in. Lots of shade from palm trees to sit under.
Like everyone else has said, the jerk chicken was delicious, had it for lunch every day.

Meals – we ate breakfast at the large buffet on the first morning and service was terrible. Tried the smaller one after that and it was night and day difference, ate there the rest of the week. We tried the steak house, oriental, and Italian. We like the Italian the most.

Resort I would say, is not 5 stars, But a good 4

TIPS – take insulated cups, plug adapters, USB adapters, room spray, and most important, tip the people who work there.
If you found this review useful, please hit the thumbs up…..Thanks

They sell it to you as 5 stars but it doesn’t even reach the fourth star: basic rooms, they give you a towel and a towel per person, beach towels are hard to get, in the bath; or there are empty containers for soap that is the same as the shampoo, the conditioner had but very little, forget body creams, bar soaps, vanity pack, and anything else that a five star puts you in the baths. The staff is very poor throughout the hotel especially in the restaurants. For dinner you have to arrive before 7pm and beg at each one to be assigned a table. In one of them you have to queue at 5:30pm to get a dinner table... There are several options but you may not make room in any and end up eating at the buffet. The buffet food is bad. Drinks give you all day but with almost no alcohol. In the gym that is supposed to have drinking water, towels, air conditioning, etc. there is none of that. I don't recommend it. The good thing: you don't spend on tips because sincerely the employees don't deserve it!!! The only thing that saves it is the animation but when they feel like it the animators do not suspend it for any reason.

I had an amazing experience at Hotel Riu Republica! The resort exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect combination of relaxation and fun. The location on Arena Gorda Beach is absolutely stunning, with soft sand and crystal-clear water.

The room was spacious, clean, and well-equipped with everything I needed for a comfortable stay. The variety of restaurants was impressive—each meal felt like a culinary adventure, and I especially loved the gourmet and Indian cuisines. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, always ensuring I had everything I needed.

The entertainment was a highlight of my trip! The themed beach parties and live shows were so much fun, and the lively atmosphere around the pools kept the energy up throughout the day. For those looking to relax, the spa was a slice of heaven.

Overall, Hotel Riu Republica is perfect for anyone seeking a vibrant, adults-only getaway with top-notch service. I can’t wait to come back!

The hotel, despite its years and deterioration, retains the very well-suited spaces, such as rooms, swimming pools, restaurants. The facades and doors of the rooms show deterioration. The beds are spacious, as are the bathrooms and rooms. The pillows were fine with me, although in this respect they could be improved. The towels also look somewhat old, but remain clean and change them daily. The mini bar service is replenished every two days, which I think meets the expectations, because in all bars you still have liquor in open bar, including in the sport bar the service is 24 hours. The shows on the night are good, but don't expect anything of superior quality. A little short for my taste (45 minutes). The disc (Pacha disco) operates from 10 pm to 2 am. All music is electronic or reggaeton. Don't expect variety. The beach is wide and white; it has many beach chairs, I never ran out of chair. Beach towels are scheduled for delivery (2 times a day), once in the morning and once in the afternoon. They do this because they wash them for use in the afternoon. The restaurants Asia (Oriental) and Tarantella, I think that while they are good, they are not the best. I found the buffet restaurant with the best seasoning and best food. Altagracia restaurant has many spaces to choose from in its buffet (Oriental, American, Dominican, Italian, Sea, Rapid, Vegetarian, among other wide dessert and beverage spaces).
The service in general is very attentive. Some quieter and more reserved than others, but none attended reluctantly if one approaches them with a cordial greeting and a good smile.
It has quiet pool spaces, others of greater rumba and party. That is suitable for all tastes.
The hotel, for me, is not the best, but its COST-BENEFIT ratio seems to me to be ideal.

If you're looking for a place to relax and enjoy, this is not the hotel for you. Riu Republica is better suited for those who just want to drink terrible alcohol (which smells like ethanol) and don’t mind outdated accommodations.

The photos online are misleading—this hotel is very old, and all the rooms are in desperate need of renovation. It’s the worst place I’ve ever visited for relaxation. This hotel is nowhere near a 5-star standard.

One of the worst aspects is the blatant scamming by the staff. They give you a horrible room upon arrival and then demand extra money to "upgrade" you to the room you originally paid for. This kind of behavior is unacceptable, and the staff are unfriendly and unprofessional. I’ve never experienced such poor service in my life.

While the hotel claims to be part of the "Green & Fair Hotels" initiative, this seems to be a façade. They don’t wash the bedding properly, but instead, use such harsh chemicals for cleaning that it irritates all mucous membranes. Asthmatics or anyone with sensitivities should avoid this place entirely.

The only positive aspect is the beach, which is beautiful, but even that is ruined by the overwhelming number of vendors. There are more sellers than actual guests, making it impossible to relax.

The food is average, comparable to what you’d expect at a 2- or 3-star hotel, certainly not a 5-star dining experience.

Avoid Riu Republica if you value good service, cleanliness, and genuine hospitality.

From 07/23/2023 we checked into this hotel at 9.30 pm.
At first we were given a room far from the sea, the sofa and some of the walls were scratched in the room, the bathroom was also not the first freshness. The next day they changed our room, which is not good news.
They gave us a room near the main pool, 3 minutes walk to the sea;) the room is a little better, but there are some nuances, in the bathroom the shower is already rusty, where the glass in the shower is also rusty. Cosmetics for the shower include: shampoo, soap and body milk; for such a hotel you can also add hair conditioner. Towels in the bathroom wish to be better (it's time to understand). The bed linen has some stains or streaks. The ceiling is also stained, the sockets are not practical, you can’t charge :( it’s also not always possible to charge your phone via USB, since they are already loose
Beach Towels are generally a nightmare, some came across torn, with a pulled thread, and the worst thing is that most of the towels are stained. It is not pleasant to lie on such towels in such a hotel of such a level that has proven itself.

There are two main restaurants, there is a lot of food and a variety to suit every taste. Everyone will find something for themselves. I was here for my birthday, they didn’t congratulate me :(
Eats A la Carte restaurants. There is no need to sign up in advance; when you come, I sign you up right away and they give you a chip; when it beeps, it means your turn has come.
In the main restaurants there are wait staff who are not always attentive to vacationers, they may not remove a dirty plate, they may not offer water or wine. Or ignore it altogether. The staff in the main restaurants is very slow.
There is always entertainment near the main pool.
A very beautiful approach to the beach on both sides🌴, the algae on the beach is removed, and there is almost none in the ocean on our beach. Because we walked along the shore and saw how much algae there was near other hotels and how much was floating near the shore.
So This is the Best Beach👌.

I went as part of a group of 5 people to the Riu Republica Punta Cana for a week. Cannot say I will be back. For context: We went post Christmas and celebrated NYE there.

For Food - The breakfast options were okay. The coffee machines had a smell at the smaller buffet option, overall breakfast options were fast but unfortunately the quality control is not amazing. For Lunch - The Jerk Chicken was the best part of the food experience! The jerk chicken from grill was flavorful and consistently a crowd-pleaser. Best lunch options. The Buffet was the optimal choice for dinner which is a terrible indicator as one would expect the speciality à la carte restaurants to shine. That being said, when polled, our group rated the buffet a solid 6 from three people and 5 from one, not amazing but reliable and diverse options. Get what you know is good and you will not be disappointed.

Entertainment- Beach Parties: The beach parties were lively and entertaining, adding to the resort’s fun atmosphere.
Beaches were rough, not clean but one would expect Life Guards to be present. We witnessed an event where a patron encountered rough waters and had to be rescued by his family members, no life guards on duty, and pleas for help from the staff. Very unfortunate that a resort cannot afford life guards, considering the vast amount of alcohol and food that is consumed on premises. Alcohol was cheap - not surprising but don’t expect amazing selection, you will be find.

Service - as you can expect, no tip - poor service. Tip and you will be treated appropriately.

Lots for the Hotel to improve:

Foul Smell across the various parts of the Hotel, HVAC system in buffets smell moldy. Our group had one room that smelled like a sewer and had to wait 24 hours to change rooms, another had a room with no Air Con for the whole trip. Truly terrible customer service in the managing of this.

Our group was disappointed with Gym : It lacked basic equipment, had only one yoga mat for everyone to share, and not enough treadmills, which made working out a challenge.

The swimming pools were okay, they didn’t stand out compared to other resorts, poor maintenance and quality of pool experience.

The shows and parties ending at 11 PM felt far too early. Extend to 12/1. Extending it would have made for a more memorable night.

Charging $20 for a billiards/pool table felt ridiculous

The towel shortage was frustrating. Running out of towels at a resort of this size is unacceptable.

Mosquitoes: Mosquito repellent is a must. Be prepared, as they’re relentless. One would expect the Hotel would do a better job of managing this.

Lastly - if you want to experiment and need a fun trip: go for a short trip (5 days MAX) and go off season. This resort is not equipped for large crowds and more importantly paying for this at off peak seasons (cheaper prices) will ease the blow of poor service. 1.5/5 stars - do not recommend.

Yes, they have a lot of non meat options, a very nice salad buffet, and a very nice pasta station at every meal. Plus a lot of rice and vegetable options.

We are in our mid- 50's and just got back.. This is actually not much of a party place if you ask me. Lot's of younger people due to the cost. Bust also many older folk as well.. You'll be fine.. Lot's of quiet areas to relax. The best thing about this place is you can always find beach and pool seats.. they have plenty.. first time I've ever seen this.
