We came a week in early March as a couple. The weather was perfect. The beach is beautiful, several km of fine sand. The complex is large and very well built so the rooms are not far from the beach and everything is accessible in less than 5 minutes.
Common areas, swimming pools, bathrooms, everything is really clean.
There are nice comfortable chairs in good condition at the pool as well as at the beach and we have always found some available.
You can exchange your towels without problems and there is nothing missing.
The buffet is very large and has views of the pools and the sea, it is beautiful.
The food is fine. Fresh fruit bcp at all meals, quite nice variety in the dishes offered. There's nothing missing... except maybe a real toaster for lunch. The à la carte restaurants are numerous. Food and correct choice.
The general atmosphere is pleasant, the staff is more or less smiling but always courteous.
Less pleasant point is the room.
We had a superior room with king bed. The bed was comfortable however the air conditioning is semi-functional which maintains a very high ambient humidity and keeps the fabrics moist and an ordinary smell in the room. As there is no mosquito net, it is impossible to leave the patio door open to ventilate in the evening.
The bathroom is beautiful in size but mold ++ in all corners of the room entirely ceramic floor to ceiling. Functional shower with hot water but only points to the wall from where it is installed because broken pommel support; so you need to hold the pommel with your hand to rinse your hair.
Soundproofing is completely absent. You can listen to your neighbors’ conversations without difficulty. You’ll feel like you’re lying in the theatre until the wee hours of the morning each night depending on the groups on site. Spring break is not a rest week except between 7am and 1pm.

We were on site for 10 days, I read the opinions and doubted if I had done well to come. But from our experience we had a super cute time, they have plenty of entertainment, the guys are very friendly. At the firm they always replenished the food, it was hot and hot. The vast majority of employees are friendly. Regarding the room if you must warn to change your towels. But then everything flawless. I recommend the place. It is important not to put the cards in the room with the cell phones because if not they reset and you must reconfigure them. In addition for an additional we were offered to change rooms overlooking the pool and the rooms were in condition.

I traveled with my teenagers 17 and 13. We had a great time. We had room 4402 in front of the pool with a beautiful sea view. The view is really beautiful and we took advantage of our balcony to watch the animation at the pool.
The beauty is very beautiful. Beautiful white sand, well maintained and the sea water is quite warm.
We used the lobby BAR and the pool bar (El Mirador). Courteous service, kind staff and we were served quickly. We had daily towels to go to the beach and the girl who looks after the towels at the pool is very smiling and kind. We tried only 2 restaurants due to lack of space during bookings. We would have liked to use the Italian restaurant and seafood but there was no room. The Tokyo restaurant is excellent and the chef who cooked for us was very friendly. We also liked the Dominican restaurant, the food was good. We used the buffet for lunches and there was plenty of choice. The omelets were very good and the staff behind the hot plates very nice. We made a late check out for $10/hour to keep our room the last day. So, we were supposed to vacate the room by noon, but by paying 50 US dollars, we were able to keep the room until 5:00. The reception service was quite fast. We really enjoyed our stay. The only weak point is lunch and dinner at the buffet. The food is redundant and everything tastes the same. Dishes in sauce that taste the same... Grills and fresh salad choices are missing. However, the beauty of the site is really nice and the staff is very kind. I'll go back!

We left very disappointed and frustrated; a stay I would not repeat or recommend; Occidental Caribe has even made me lose confidence that the Barceló group is synonymous with quality hotels.

Room maintenance is poor: semi-broken doors, rusty bathtubs, broken drawers, the room phone was not working, nor were the lamps (and we had to call technical service several times)

The worst, the cleanliness of the rooms: clean towels were missing when returning from the beach, they did not replenish the soap to shower, sand accumulated on the balcony, even found a cockroach near the cups and kettle on the first night..

The quality of the food and drinks is very low and the waiters to very disorganized and slow.

The best: entertainment equipment for children and location before a spectacular beach.

I could go on more about the frustrating aspects of this experience in Occidental Caribe, but I don’t want to waste more time reporting on an establishment that didn’t compensate us with anything after the several complaints and inconveniences experienced. I'll never go back to a Barceló group hotel.

We are a large party of family members with a 7-room block, therefore our reviews are not based on one room, but several. I can say we will never return here not even if it’s free. The experience was so poor it’s something no one should have to go through when on vacation and just trying to enjoy a week of relaxation. There are much better options and really this resort is not for tourists. They really love to cater to the local crowd only here regardless if you speak Spanish.
Rooms: Extremely outdated and falling apart - literally. Moldy showers with minimal cleaning, toilet in half the rooms didn’t work or had issues - fortunately we have a handyman in our family to help us all as relying on staff was hopeless. We had a leak in one of the rooms dripping in the ceiling and just placed towels as we had already requested room change where supposedly none were available.
Food: Absolutely terrible, cold, and just left out until consumed, regardless of flies flying on the food. Some of us got stomach sickness during our week’s stay and we preferred to pay eat at the restaurants outside the resort (after the food sickness).
Service: This resort is clearly serving the locals who come to this resort to spend long weekend and vacations. We speak fluent Spanish yet we’re not from this country and yes, we were treated differently than the locals. We tend to get ignored, even when making the line to get food or at the bar, let alone room cleaning as our rooms didn’t get cleaned for 3 days until we essentially protest they clean our rooms. Locals would cut in line and the bartenders would be fine with it, mentioning to one guest“ we have to take care of our own “ thinking I didn’t speak Spanish! The staff at the restaurants were not friendly like if no one really wants to work there and they do the absolute minimum other than place napkins and forks on the table.
Taxis/private excursions: This was a point I must stress that we experienced. If you don’t book excursions using Occidental’s overpriced tours office, you run the risk of your excursions company not being allowed past the gate. They were a legit company yet they weren’t allowed in and we had no other choice after arguing with security than to hike all the way to the main road where the tour van waited for us; about a mile walk in 94 degree weather with an elderly person. It was absolutely not ok and I mentioned to them I would write this experience online as it’s completely unacceptable. Yet they didn’t care.
They clearly don’t want us there from the US, so next time we’ll go elsewhere and visit a Punta Cana resort that does want us to enjoy our stay versus stressing.

Bottom line this is a 2-star level all-inclusive resort. Know that going in and plan accordingly. The first room we were initially given was in the “7” block which was an unoccupied area of the hotel. The room had not been attended to — bugs, trash, no a/c, beds were not ready etc. It took almost 2 hours to get another room (and we were club level”). This room had 5 people tending to to the room when we entered—making beds, hanging curtains etc. The a/c only worked in half of the room. We ended up moving the mattresses into the seating area so we could sleep at night. A 27° C room is not comfortable. Neither toilet worked do we had to have them come back. I will say the beach is perfect on the club side and if you come during shoulder season and prepare more of a beach camp experience you’ll be pleased. Dont be fooled by on line photos. The restaurant food is average and waitstaff’s attitude is awful (sullen and rude which is odd for locals who are known for their hospitality and friendliness). Drinks are in small 6 oz cups. Again if you want a great beach at low cost Occidental Caribe is ✅. If you want customer service, peace and calm, and not roughing it … avoid this property.

Our resort takes pride in its upkeep and maintenance, and what you encountered is not indicative of our standards. Worst managed hotel I've ever seen!
Got an electric shock from the pliers in the restaurant by the pool!
Dirty!
Bad food!
They use the same tongs for raw chicken as for the raw cutlet!
You have to go hunting and find clean towels every day!
The rooms smell strongly of mold
The hotel refuses to give anything back!
Our stay was still 17 days!!!
This was our honeymoon and my husband had written to the hotel before the stay and told them this.
Not even a folded towel on the bed had been prepared!
The door to the room could only be opened a little bit (dangerous in terms of fire safety)
Such noise by the pool and this also disturbed the room.
Bat poo all over the balcony and its unhealthy tables and chairs! This was never completely cleaned up
The food is a joke!
Anyone cooks better than this hotel could do
The serving staff are either totally uneducated or completely nonchalant because it takes a long, long time to order a drink with the food. And when you order, you rarely get what you ordered. The chance of getting anything to drink at all before the food is cold or eaten is very small
In addition, very much is finished.
Most of the bottles in the bar are empty ornaments, most of them are gone.
Long, long queues as the staff are untrained and seem to wish they were somewhere else
About 3 power cuts every day then the water also stops working
The toilets at the reception were out of order so it stank of sewage everywhere.
Pushy salesmen in the hotel area.
Unbeatable prices in the store.
Blood on the walls and floor of one staircase that was never cleaned.
CHOOSE ANOTHER HOTEL!
Whatever happens to you at the hotel, the owner is too stingy and inhospitable to give anyone any compensation!

The check-in was extremely long, more than an hour and a half.
We arrived at our room, there was mold on the walls, in addition to having a strong smell of moisture and mold, the bath was filled with black circle, the cleanliness left much to be desired.
We have a 12-month-old baby, I asked to change rooms. This stage went super well. We had a "superior room" for the same price. In my opinion, it was a standard room. The cabinet was missing a door handle, the shower head was broken and the safe didn’t work.
The outdoor site is completely beautiful and well maintained. There are two gigantic swimming pools and an area of slides and axle games for children. There are plenty of less hollow sections and paddling style, we loved it so our baby could walk and play in the water. Very nice games room and lobby. There is a gym, pool, ping pong, table football, giant chess games, shops, climbing, trapeze, entertainment, spa, casino, theater, volleyball, beach soccer, water sports, show every night, etc.
Courteous and professional staff. The majority speak only Spanish.
There are very few Quebecers at this hotel if it is important to you.
The beach is beautiful, beautiful sand and you can walk there for a long time.
Our room was located above the lobby where there was music until 9:45 pm. It was a bit aggressive when you could hear loud music all day at the pool, at the buffet, everywhere, actually. Often we heard two musics at the same time it was cacophonous.
He mentions being 25 minutes from the hotel, but it took us more than 1h30 to get to the hotel. For the return, much faster 35 minutes.
Air transat mentions that the resort is a responsible eco resort. I don't know what that means in their language, but they serve the drinks entirely in disposable plastic glasses. At the restaurant by the pool are styrofoam plates and plastic utensils.
The food was good and varied. Many choices on the menu and several à la carte restaurants.
They clearly need to invest in room improvements. Otherwise, the site is great!

We traveled as a family and had a terrible time. We are not demanding at all I must clarify, and we tried to put the best vibe in the face of the unexpected but there were so many that finished ruining the trip.

I read a lot of reviews but I thought the flaws of the hotel were overcome. I swear it's worse than people leave in comments.

Worst of all was the treatment of the staff, literally one day they made me cry and have a horrible time being pregnant. Shouting and insulting.
They respond badly, challenge you for everything, take your plate when you are eating, are very disrespectful and mistreat the tourist.

What they say about the rooms is true, they intended us to sleep in a leaky one in the bathroom and we had to demand bad shape until they changed it.

Bad cleaning, they didn't put towels, they didn't make the room, if you called reception they never answered, you had to go every day for something different.

The very ugly food, all recycled and reheated, queues up all over, being that we are in the off-season.

In the elevator we had a situation in which it seemed to fall and another guest helped us open the door with his hands to take us out and help us.

The beach is nice, although with strong waves but if that is why it is full of sticky hotels that are better.

This hotel is far from being four stars, the infrastructure cheats like it is good and nothing to see.

The cheap is expensive gentlemen, think carefully before choosing this hotel, I did not listen to the comments and regret it.

GOOD: great beach, appropriate facilities, constant cleaning in common areas and in rooms which are very comfortable, fun pools, location of the hotel close to the airport, entertaining shows with a good atmosphere, recreationists who are diligent in their work. Permanent food, snacks and drinks are very varied.

BAD: varied food, but lacks seasoning; lack of porter staff, lack of office signage as well as information on the menu available in the dining room, as well as schedules of activities and locations (gym, dining room, snack); In addition, be more specific when giving instructions about the places that the client is looking for within the hotel. To turn on the light in the room you had to go through the dark room to turn on the lamps, the phone was useless, to ask something at the reception you had to go from room 7414, which is one of the last ones, to the hotel lobby.

UGLY: there is a lack of warmth in the treatment by the staff who serve the dining room and kitchen tables, they lack a lot of courtesy and kindness, it seems as if they were obligated.

CONCLUSION: Resort with great facilities but that should make the client's stay feel more pleasant

Would I go back? Possibly yes, but I would prioritize other options

Has anyone stayed there recently who noticed a musty smell in the rooms? I am extremely sensitive to must.
Answer from Frederic S
Yes we did. We came back last friday from a 1 week vacation trip. We had superior oceant front room in block 7. The room was outdated and needed some updates and repair. I suspected the AC to be the caused of the smell

Hi, I apologize for not seeing your message sooner and I hope I am not too late. I found a service on a you tube video, it is Poppi Express. They are covered 3 wheel motorcycles. There is supposedly an app, Poppy Express (the app has a y and not I, from the source I read). I am unable to download the app in the US, but might be available on the ground in Punta Cana. Also, their WhatsApp # is +1 829.666.5252. I have not used them yet, but plan to try them in a couple of weeks when I’ll be in Punta Cana again. I hope I’m not too late to be of assistance……enjoy your vacation!
