8 days - March 2023 Two families Four kids: 5-11 The not so good: Housekeeping would only give either bath towels or hand towel and floor towel, not both at once. Eventually she came by but only after we were done showering and needed to leave for dinner. Gets better if you tip. Shower was mediocre as expected. Curtains were not clean. On the third day, the tub wouldn’t drain, we asked for plumber and never came. Housekeeping saw the tub the next day and likely requested service. After the service it was fine. We brought a bath mat and glad we did. Chair game was worst I’ve seen at any resort. Ppl are ruthless, they will take your chair and remove your towels. They will swap your chair for a broken one while you are away. 6:30 wasn’t early enough to get an umbrella. 5am wasn’t early enough either. Who wants to wake up at 5am on vacation. Smokers smoke anywhere, it wasn’t a huge problem. Normally I’m quite particular but it didn’t bother me for some reason. I think bc the wind blew ir away pretty quickly. The “hot tubs” are the same temperature as the pool if not colder bc no one goes in them. Discovered the kids wading pool is slightly warmer than pool. We had an electronic safe and our friends had a safe that required a key. Our safe ended up with an error message and would not open the day before we left with our passports inside. This was not the resort’s fault. They tried to fix it but ended up having to cut it open. Our passports warped from the heat but we were happy to have them in hand. If you get a safe with a key, look on the bright side. The good: Check in was great and room was ready right away. When we arrived around 1pm. The grounds are impeccable. Always clean and maintained. There are garbage cans everywhere and specific tray type stands for your unfinished drinks. Even the ashtrays had detail with their logo imprinted in the sand. I liked that detail - I’m not a smoker. There were always water bottles at front desk. Plugs are same for North America. Clothes dry over night on the balcony. Other: All tv channels are in Spanish except for news. WiFi was spotty to connect but not too bad once connected. You can stream in room and at beach snack bar. Activities are good. Entertainment team works hard. Most ppl are were from Canada, Poland, Russia and locals. Some from USA. Food: Buffet was good, good choices and not too many repeats. Bar had self serve burgers, hot dogs, chips, fries and the fixings. Sometimes guac. Great option for hungry kids after a swim between meals. Beach snack bar was alright, good in a pinch but service is slow. Can make all reservations at once for the week which was nice. Steakhouse - rib eye was thin and over cooked even if you had asked for well done, we asked for medium. Get the striploin or churrasco. Beef patty was great. Japanese restaurant was a change but still not great. Something was lacking, we all agreed it was onion, garlic and some basic seasoning. The “miso” soup was consommé with veggies and potatoes. The fried rice is good. The Italian restaurant was called La Grappa but served no grappa. The best thing here was the big wheel of parm. There is no fresh cracked pepper. Nice to be able to roam to the sister resort Bachata - Senator guests can go for drinks here free of charge but not Vice versa. Great path to lookout and able to see lots of windmills and cruise ships. Ocean has a big undertow so beware. They won’t let you swim and will whistle if you go out too far or on really windy days won’t let you in water at all. Beach has awesome shade and sun options. Lots of chairs still by 7:30 am. Better than pool in that regard. Amphitheater was great - good location away from rooms. They get the crowd involved. Little strip of shops - gelato, coffee, slots, souvenirs, cigars and good kid games on weekends for prizes. Overall: The modern look is what sold us. Beach was perfect. There were always napkins, cups, cutlery, etc (read some horror reviews for other destinations that lack these things). Tip and ye shall receive in abundance. Enjoy! …
best entertainment team i’ve ever met, the staff was so energetic and friendly towards everyone especially our two favourites black monkey and cappuccino. The did a very good job of bringing everyone together to play fun games and really enjoy themselves. Can’t wait to return in the coming years!!
10 of us (7 adults, 3 kids 11/7/2.5) went over March break and for the most part we had a great time. Having 1 party pool and 1 chill pool was pretty great. GET MORE LOUNGE CHAIRS!!!!! Every day this was such hassle. The beach was beautiful but red flags all week so no swimming. There is a smaller, calmer beach which is easily accessed between buildings 5 and 6. Bring water shoes. The food was decent but almost everyone in our group had tummy troubles. I highly recommend bringing Imodium dual action, Tums and Advil. Huge shout out to the best servers Juan Palo and Anna Marie. So friendly and welcoming. The kids loved Juan's bird noises. Sports Bar at lunch had the best snacks including; nachos, amazing guacamole, burgers, hot dogs and chicken fingers. We didn't have a problem booking the restaurants. I simply booked through a reprosentative. The Japanese/Teppanyaki grill restaurant was a fun experience, especially for the kids. The steak house was also delicious. Our room was clean when we arrived but it was maybe cleaned a few other times the entire week we were there. The AC wasn't very good and there was a musty smell. The ceiling fan was a lifesaver. Like others have mentioned, towels were an issue. Overall this was an awesome family trip! Thank you Senator Staff! …
There were really only 2 bad things that we encountered during our stay. 1) We had an excursion that left at 6:30am, so we got up to go to the sports bar at 6am and there was no food, told it wouldn’t open until 7am, was told they had to clean and refresh it. I get it, the 24/7 sports bar may have to shut down at times for cleaning, but shut it down at 7am, when you can go to the buffet for breakfast. The fact that there was zero food available prior to our excursion was a real let down. 2) Housekeeping takes your towels at probably 10am and you don’t get them back until 6:30pm sometimes. I personally would rather have dirty towels than no towels, and there didn’t seem to be a way to signal don’t take my towels. Everything else was pretty good, the food was pretty good, large and fresh variety at the buffet, we especially enjoyed the beans and soups. We hardly ever had to wait for a drink, the beer was always cold, and the service was always friendly. A few small minor tweaks and this place would be great. I recommend bringing a large stack of $1s for tipping. As far as chairs went, we actually brought our own. We didn’t want no chair to ruin our vacation. What sucks is, is if people just used the chairs as needed, the resort would have plenty and there’d always been one to sit on. Unfortunately people suck, reserve chairs and then don’t use them all day.…
Just got back from my stay at senator we booked the standard junior suit room which came with a safe that required a key which i was not happy about. We found ants in our room and had a busted ac as well the next morning we complained and were given another room. The second room had no water pressure at all but we just dealt with it. We were able to upgrade 3 days later to their Luxury Suit which was a major upgrade (would highly recommend upgrading if you can). Food was excellent we did all 3 of the al carte, steakhouse was my favourite ,we did it twice didn't even need a reso for the second time. my fiance loved the Japanese .Pool bar was excellent drinks were good. Edwin the photographer took our materinity pictures which came out great! Never had an issue with towels only problem hot water stop working for some reason for an hour we had called maintenance but never showed up hot water starting to work after not sure what the issue was. Aside from that an overall great stay i would definitely recommend and would come back for sure!…
An honest review, we are not black band members just visited here and came back on the 19th of march. We are a family in our 30's with our toddler son. I think most people need to realize this is a value resort. Its often the second or third cheapest resort in all of the Dominican to go to. Therefore adjust your expectations as your not getting 5 star at this price point. It is a good 4 star resort. Ill break down the review into key areas: Rooms: No AC for the week but was not really needed. The fan in the room worked well and we left the door open and screen closed on the sliding door. Beds are amazing and wanted to bring one back for home! We did a regular ocean view room and had a nice view of the port where the cruise ships come in. The rooms are very RIU still in the older blocks (we were in block 5), the room was clean and had no odors or anything along those lines. We did not have hot water at all for the week but this was the norm. and a cool shower at night after being in the hot sun all day was nice. We asked for diet pepsi as i am diabetic and left a tip in which we got lots of diet pepsi, soda water and water. Rooms are a 4/5 Food: We did all the ala carts, i would not do the italian again as it was nothing different then what you got at the buffet. The steak and the japense was good and would do them again. We also did a romantico dinner on the beach, this was well worth the 50USD per person. The buffet was good and had a large selection every meal. Fresh fish, beef, chicken, pork at every meal plus all the sides. We normally do Cuba ever year but did dominican this time because the food in cuba last year was bad coming off the pandemic. The food here is most definitely a few levels ahead of Cuba. 4/5. Pool: Dont hate the player, hate the game. You have to get up before 530 am to get chairs or you WILL NOT get chairs. I got chairs at 530am one morning and there was minimal selection. Again dont hate the player, hate the game. Get up and get chairs and go back to sleep if the chairs are that important to you. It is to us traveling with a toddler so we do what we need to so we can be comfortable. Pool is a bit dated and needs work but the water was very warm and my son loved playing in it every day. 3/5 Beach: sandy beach with lots of chairs and areas to sit in the shade. We only spent a day at the beach but it was beautiful. 4/5 Grounds: Grounds are well kept and clean. They dont like you walking on the grass because they try to keep it green. 5/5 Bars: The bars are good with speedy service. Drinks are mixed well and they use a decent rum if you ask for it. No issues with the bar 5/5 Shops: Stay away from the shops at the rainbow road or the ones outside the buffet. They just rob you blind. They say 12$ american for cigarettes but then want 20 CAD and wont give you a fair rate. Everything is charged in USD so i would bring USD for tipping and what not in the future. There are shops on either side of the beach and are well worth going to for shopping. 25 cigar boxes for 50USd and tshirts for 10$ each USD. Guys selling cigars near the buffet want 500$ a box and there the same cigars, dont get ripped off. 0/5 Overall was a great trip and for the price (1550 per person on an ocean view room) you cant go wrong for the dominican. we would travel here again at this price regardless of the small issues with the AC. The chair game is something you have to play when you go all inclusive so stop complaining.…
The entertainment team was fire especially black monkey, chicken little and skinny! Thank you for everything. Honestly it was my best trip. The resort is really clean and the room too. I would definitely recommend this resort .
I traveled in a group of 4 with my parents and sister. We had an amazing time because of how friendly the staff is. They make you feel so comfortable and welcomed. Special mentions to Mosquito and Chicken Little from the entertainment group, and Edwin from the photo department. We met Chicken Little on our first day because he got us to play a game by the pool. He is full of energy and will guarantee you have fun during your stay. The shows the entertainment group puts on at night are not to be missed! They work really hard to make sure their guests are happy and having a good time. They’re very interactive. Edwin was extremely friendly and helped us get our pictures that were taken emailed to us. Couldn’t recommend visiting enough just for the staff alone.
Went here for our honeymoon.. big mistake! Housekeeping- deplorable! Towels taken by 9 am and not replaced until 8 pm. Coffee maker with no coffee or coffee pot, no hot water, a/c doesn't work, cracked bathtub. Long lineups in restaurant to find they have run out of items and people like vultures, reaching in front of you to grab their food. Not enough beach chairs on the beach (which is well maintained as are the grounds) or poolside as people save them as early as 4am. Only a handful of staff that are pleasant and happy. The saving grace was the entertainment team, especially their evening shows. Don't look at their promotional video as it's very misleading. The video is showing their new VIP experience and is not a true reflection of their resort. If you want a Dominican resort, go south as the resorts there are 5 star worthy. Also recommend learning Spanish before you go as the majority of the staff will not understand you. You don't get what you pay for here. …
Where to start.... First we arrived late and stood in line to check in, there were about 15 of us checking in and 1 person on the desk. we requested via travel agent and email prior to visit that we needed main floor for health reasons, when we were finally headed to our room at the back of the resort we found out we were placed on the 4th floor, no elevator. we made the climb and entered a musty hot room to find out the air conditioning wasn't working. back to the desk front we went, phones did not work so it was our only option. we were told there were no available rooms but the very nice man at the desk managed to hunt one down for us, change of room and we were able to relax by 2am. the next morning we inquired about air and were told "they were working on it" it never got fixed. The concept of loungers by the pool or beach is a joke unless you rise by 5am and make the trip with your towels, seriously good luck. once in the 7 days did we have enough loungers to sit the 4 of us together at the pool, never at the beach. Food, the buffet was ok, just ok. lack of glasses for drinks, lack of bacon for breakfast unless you arrived before 8am. omelets were good, crepes and pancakes doughy. good selection of fruit and cheeses. the resort next door has a better dinner buffet I recommend it over the Senator one. getting alacarts is a joke, we arrived on a Tuesday and lined up between 8:30-10:30am to book, we were told everything is booked up until Friday, we were able to get Italian Friday and steakhouse Saturday. you then have to line up again to book for the next week.... again fully booked..... the service in steakhouse was rude, Italian was good. Drinks, subpar alcohol, and so much sugar in their mixes that you end up sick. not much selection in drink choices and most are made with a slushie, hence the sugar. Towels, you will be given cards to get your allotment of towels, DO Not lose or misplace said towels unless you enjoy being yelled at and charge 20.00 per towel. The grounds were kept nice and tidy, the rooms were kept clean, with no air conditioning for the ENTIRE week we would have like to open the porch door for air but it didn't have a screen door with it so unless we wanted critters that wasn't an option. Also be prepared, the VIP rooms are converting to Timeshare so if you are unhappy about anything their solution is to talk you into a timeshare and then you can have everything. My thinking is that they need to spend less time on the 20 time share people and more time pleasing the other few hundred that work hard to go away for a week once a year. also don't get hit by the VIP golf carts that seem to be everywhere. Overall the resort was not great, rating a 3.5 (and being generous) the housekeepers, ground staff, and bartenders were friendly and courteous. be prepared as 90% of the resort do not know English at all. If you are looking for excursions go see Benjamin down by the beach, best deal and looks after your every need. To the gentleman who comments on the negative reviews Alejandro, maybe instead of commenting after the fact try being at the resort to problem solve your issues that most people are talking about. you lost us and I will be telling everyone I know not to come to your resort. …
