Sunscape Puerto Plata May 20 – Jun 3, 2022 Travelled as two couples. Myself and my husband had been here Dec 2019. We got a good price for the 2 weeks so decided to come back. Transport to the hotel was included however once folks got out of the airport (and some before) off came the masks despite Transat saying they had to stay on for the bus ride – even the staff were not wearing masks on the bus. They have switched to smaller busses as there is damage to a major bridge that they cross to go to the resorts, they now take a longer back route (not too much longer) though in a bus that is very small and cramped. The resort had just moved to staff not having to wear masks anymore and were asking people to social distance instead. Lots of hand sanitizer is everywhere you go. They mark the tables as sanitized when they cleaned however having watched staff simply quickly wipe a number of tables with the same cloth and then add the sign to the table, I would not count on that. FYI they are still isolating those who test positive for COVID we did see this several times over the two weeks. The hotel was good about addressing this for the individuals – the airlines were another matter altogether. I love the idea of having staff serve most of the parts of the meal in the buffet, you just point to what you want, and they put it on your plate. This also meant they were on top of ensure what was in the container was kept warm by moving it around on the warmer and nicely displayed. Things like salads, deserts, and buns you could pick yourself. Check in was a breeze. Sat comfortably in chairs in the Sun Club with a drink, filled in a little paperwork and then all done. Rooms were on second floor facing the trees at the back, lovely and quiet. The rooms are still without decoration I find. No pictures or artwork anywhere but everything worked, bed was comfortable and lots of hot water/rain shower in bathroom and safe/wifi included. There is a mini fridge with plenty of bottled water, pop and beer. If you want more just ask, they are happy to accommodate. We let our maid know at the beginning that we would like a couple of extra bottles each day and never had to remind her. There is a flat screen TV in the room with a variety of channels but not many in English but who needs to watch TV anyway. They also have DVD players however they are down to about 8-10 DVD’s in the resort (we tried to find some for a person isolating who was bored). If you have children bring your own. Stayed in the Sun Club Adult area. This is a no bracelet resort but your key card for your room is what allows you privileges in the Sun Club areas of the resort. The gates are kept closed and locked except when staff are needing to get things in and out, they may open the gate and leave it for a few minutes but never longer than that. There are small private pools in both the areas and top shelf liquor. Sambucca and coffee anyone. We had hoped on this trip that Castaways (Beach Grill) would be open – the bar was but never the restaurant. They did do the menu from Castaways one night on the terrace, so we did get some choices from that menu, but it only happened once in the 2 week we were there. To be honest it is very windy on the beach from about 11:30 onwards to the point where most people come back into the more protected areas of the resort. To be honest the restaurant part is in a bit of disrepair – they may want to consider rebuilding Castaways in a way that takes advantage of being near the beach but also has some better protection so it can be open for eating. Lots of places to eat with various choices, always somewhere severing food. They are usually happy to accommodate tastes as best they can in most of the restaurants. If anything, food is a little bland – not a lot of spice but we run into this many places – they have to pander to a certain palate but provide sauces etc if you want to add to it, we usually bring a few sauces to add but did not need them this time. Two other pluses – the woodfired pizzas and calzones – yummy but often a very busy spot. Also all the little treats and snacks in the Adult only club – great for when you just need a little something to nibble on, lots of fresh fruit baked goods, smoked salmon and other goodies. They are always cleaning and repairing things around the resort. Lovely foliage and flowers around. Wifi – yes, it is spotty – usually best in lobby and if Sun Club in your room but again it was good enough hubby even watched a hockey game one night with it.. Good news the Vacation Club sellers did not appear to be anywhere around the resort at least not that we ever ran into them. We did find at this resort in the past they are not as pushy as some other places. We didn’t really attend much entertainment either sleeping or playing cards together. What we did see was okay. On occasion there are singers in the lobby area – there was one lady who was fabulous. Unfortunately, did not get her name and while she was singing music started elsewhere in the resort almost drowning her out. Badly scheduled, I think. One disappointment was the Sun Club family restaurant. In the past they had always been so friendly, area always clean etc. It was disappointing to see glasses and plates in the restaurant and around the small pool building up. In addition, on our first morning there Joan approached the wife of the other couple about writing a review and even came back to her to “offer” to HELP her write it. We were quite shocked as over the vacation no one else even mentioned this sort of thing and certainly not offering to help write it. Extra specials thank you to our concierge Marlys Ramos who helped out with a few hiccups in the vacation and arranged a special birthday dinner for me (we were there to celebrate my coming 60th birthday). The terrace is a fabulous spot to eat, nice breeze and gorgeous views. Also, thanks to all the staff who sang, banged utensils and congratulated me that evening. Another special mention goes to Leo in the buffet. Always on top of coffee/water and any other needs we had. Always greeted us with a smile. There were a few nighttime managers at the buffet including Junior who also tried to ensure you had everything you needed.…

I love Dominican for so many reasons but the ppl are the heart and soul of this country. ❤️#livelovelife Evelin,Dennis and santos they are nice.
I'll cut to the chase. I think everyone travels differently and with differing expectations. We were 2 moms on spring break with our 4 girls and this place was literally just ok. This gets 3 stars solely on the fact that the people that work there are sweet and hard workers. Check-in: This was a terrible start to our vacation. It took HOURS to get into our rooms. They kept telling us to oh it's "almost" ready. Horrible. As a total aside- the very tall gentleman that greets you at the entrance is a sweetheart. Room: once we got there- the rooms are super dated and really not impressive at all. We asked for an upgrade and moved the following day. The. upgrade made it totally worth it as we had requested a suite to begin with. The AC was awesome here, it was much more updated and clean, and we had wifi in the rooms, and a living room space between bedrooms. yay. If you can swing the upgrade - do it. Food: really mediocre but I never have high hopes for all-inclusive unless it's super-pricey. The kids were fine with it. I would recommend they have more outdoor eating options since they don't want anyone wet/in suites at the buffet windows, They should allow reservations!!! It's such a bummer and waste of time to have to wait outside of restaurants for hours for dinner. silly really. if you're going with kids bring cards or something to hang until your table is ready- you can only walk around so much. The CAFE- is really disappointing. I mean seriously- there's never any iced coffee the entire 6 days the machine was "broken" and the sandwiches are fine - kids ate a few. iced coffee would have made it great. We paid for the dinner on the beach one night and it was fantastic. The best. We all loved it. food was great, a bonfire was nice, and overall it was just the best here. Pool: Great. big- we had fun here. 2 pools to choose from. They need more activities after 8 am. All inclusives usually have lots of fun options. Here there was 1 thing the kids did. I was told to look at the schedule but it was pretty meh. Beach: We spent lots of time here. Plenty of chairs. Wished there was a drink service here. BRING CASH... for any activity, or hair braiding, or buying jewelry. There are vendors everywhere and they will not quit!!! I always support the vendors, but they were literally arguing over our party of 6b which was a little distressing at times for the beach vibe. We did some excursions off-site to make it more fun and they were worth it. At the end of the day- you get what you pay for. BRING CASH with you because there is no machine in the resort. Its a short walk to a bank but I will say when my friend and I went we were approached by people wanting to "help" us- and i'm fluent in Spanish so it was really uncomfortable. and sketch. The staff was sweet and kind and this is not a reflection of them.. the thinsg pointed out are out of their control. This is for the resort as a whole and people who want a feel for what it's like to stay here.…
We had a wonderful time. Very relaxing. The property was very clean and the landscaping was phenomenal. Our housekeeping was great and accommodating. Her name is Melania and she was amazing. We have been going here for the last 5 years and still have a great time. Amstar was my travel rep group. Felix from Amstar was very helpful in making our trip a wonderful experience. We will be coming back and recommend it to anyone that wants to relax and have a good time. There is plenty to do out there. So go do it!
