In the heart of the colonial quarter of Santo Domingo, set among remarkable buildings, stands the Hodelpa Nicolas de Ovando hotel, the former home of the Governor of the same name, a contemporary of Christopher Colombus. Built on the first paved street of the New World, where beautiful Spanish ladies strolled to display their rich costumes, the hotel's guests will enjoy an outstanding stay in a unique place where the stones, patios and fountains will take you back in time.

Nestled in the historic district, the Hodelpa Nicolas de Ovando hotel is celebrated for its exquisite blend of comfort, design, and historical allure within its rooms, with guests often lauding the hotel's enchanting atmosphere ideal for relaxation and romance. While the prime location is perfect for exploring local attractions, some visitors advise caution with tricky drop-offs. The staff's warm and helpful nature frequently earns praise, although occasional service lapses are noted. Despite the overall cleanliness and appreciated amenities like the inviting pool, concerns about value and unexpected charges occasionally mar the experience.

This was our first visit to Santo Domingo and we stayed at the Hodelpa Nicolas De Ovando on the advice of a friend who works at the US Embassy. We are so glad we listened to her suggestion! Everything from check in to check out went smoothly. The hotel is gorgeous and in a perfect location for walking around the colonial zone. We stayed in a Colonial Imperial Room and were so glad we did! You take a private elevator to the Imperial Club with drinks and snacks that are complimentary, and walking past that you make your way to a fabulous room that holds so much charm you can’t help but enjoy it. Everything was very clean and fresh in the room. We also thoroughly enjoyed breakfast each morning. There was a wide variety of pastries as well as warm dishes, fruit, etc. You will definitely not leave hungry. I would absolutely recommend this hotel to family and friends.

The building itself it's a full inmersion in history: worth a visit even if you are not staying at the hotel.
Location and position are obviously ideal if you plan to visit the Zona Colonial.
Internal and external common areas are well maintained, with deep cleaning and maintenance that are taking place without disturbing the guests.
I stayed in a Colonial Room, ground floor: comfortable bed (medium-firm spring mattress with topper), not the best pillows (too soft) but overall a good sleep experience. Air conditioning is good but a little noisy even at minimum setting: the thick building walls are extremely insulating and you will not need to use air conditioning a lot. Bathroom needs to be modernized but it is functional, good water pressure and no lack of hot water. Well stocked minibar, punctually replenished every day. Daily housekeeping was great.
Due to the positioning of my room (near the lobby and elevator), I experienced some loud noise produced by rude guests almost every night. This is the only negative point, but education of the guests is not the hotel's fault.
Buffet breakfast is a little small for a 5 stars hotel but quality is good.
Service at breakfast and pool bar are very good: special mention to Linda for her excellent service and her kindness: went beyond what is normally expected and made my stay even better.
Reception staff are great, always ready to answer any kind of questions or requests with a smile on their faces.
Overall a great stay and highly recommended.

This was our second time at this amazing hotel and the did not disappoint the second time around! I love the architecture of this old world structure it made me feel I was in the 1500's. The food, service and cleanliness was impeccable! I loved the fact that this hotel has the best location, you are within walking distance of every good restaurant in the colonial zone and verything you would want to see and explore. I will give thumbs up to bell-boys Francisco and Hector they were amazing!

Beautiful place. Amazing service. Wonderful food and if you happen to get Linda as a waitress you’re in for a treat because she is a delight.

The rooms have a strong WiFi signal and AC which is a plus during these hot days.

This is a unique hotel with historically interesting architecture, huge thick walls and yet modern comfort levels. We loved the location as we could easily explore the Colonial Quarter and the city centre, restaurants etc. However, checking in took a very long time, about an hour, which is not great when you've travelled a long way and are tired. The shower was damaged and the shower head slid down the pole. There was a bath -lovely- but the hot and cold taps are labelled the wrong way round so we thought there was no hot water until we figured this out. Also the towels were very old. Also, I really like a cup of tea in the morning but it's only possible to have expresso coffee in a tiny cup, no milk. BUT... these were all minor details which didn't stop us having a great time and really liking this hotel. The cleaners were really good and it was safe to leave items in the room. The staff spoke good English and it was really easy to get a taxi. Also, the pool area was really nice. We would stay here again.

I have stayed at this hotel several times over the years. Previously it was Part of t he MGallery Boutique Hotels collections, a division of Accor, but about two years ago, it was purchased by Hodelpa which runs a few cheaper hotels in the colonial zone. The quality has gone down ever since. The amenities and bathroom assessoreis are now cheap and worthless (best to bring to your own).

Most recently I booked on the hotel’s website on 3 July 2020 for a stay starting 1 August (almost a month in advance). When I arrived to the hotel, I was told it was not open. No email was sent to me saying the reservation Was canceled or the hotel was closed in advanced. If you plan to stay here, think twice. The quality has gone down considerably.

This historic hotel was once the residence of Nicolas De Ovando and has been beautifully transformed into a hotel. The rooms are very comfortable. We stayed in the Colonial Special rooms on a few occasions which are nicely appointed. The only negative is that some of these rooms are a little dark. We stayed in the Junior Suite Imperial for the day of our wedding which was great for the extra space and living area where the bride could get ready. This room was great and provided access to a 24h drinks and dining service as a complimentary benefit. We also arranged a cocktail evening at the hotel as a welcome for our guests who had arrived for our wedding - this was set up in the open space close to the restaurant and was well received by our guests. The staff are very attentive to details and friendly. This is our go to place to stay whenever we are in Santo Domingo and is the best hotel in the city.

Very friendly and helpful staff. The location was central to zona colonial. The staff helped us find a taxi and one of the gentleman even walked us to the closest store to purchase souvenirs. They even have a gym and massage center.

We speak Spanish but the hotel check-in staff were all fluent in English. This historic location is ideal for exploring the Zona Colonial, its restaurants and notable sites. We stayed in a courtyard-facing room which was small but charming, though a little noisy in the early morning hours from staff activity in the courtyard. Next time, we might request a room opening to the fountain area as a quiter alternative. The outdoor restaurant and bar were ideal for catching up with friends over a drink. There are many interesting spots to sit and chat with a bottle of wine and just enjoy the historic space and architecture. In addition, there is a nice pool with swimming jets for lap swimmers. The pool area looks down on an active port, so we watched its activity including business aboard a huge ferry which goes to/from Puerto Rico. Staffers Rossi, Sugar, Edwin and Hector were eager to help us out with birthday details for one of our party, helping find a cake, surprise the birthday girl at dinner, and delivering a surprise gift to the room. I'm only giving Hodelpa Nicolas de Ovando a 4/5 here because, despite excellent service from these individual staffers, overall Dominican service standards are lower than in other countries I've visited, given price/quality expectations for of a hotel of this caliber. I've lived in the DR for 1.5 years and have dined and traveled throughout the country.

Do not pay in advance , mistakes are a nightmare to fix. If you're going on a weekend ask for a colonial room away from the event space. Air conditioners are freezing and blow across the beds so make sure you’re prepared for that. Good breakfast and a very friendly attentive staff. Been going there over 15 years management and ownership keeps changing. If you want to take in the sights it’s a great location near everything and usually very quiet at night, try for a suite it’s with the extra money

I agree with the other comments, and I certainly had no problems, prepaid online which included breakfast, parking and wifi....don't remember if I even provided a credit card since I never charge anything to a room, I always pay separate, that way my end bill is always zero, and I get a zero balance statement on checkout....anyway, this is a top notch hotel and I am confident the charge will be explained or removed. Maybe check to see if there is another contact option on their website besides a contact form....maybe an email or toll free number.
