We spent 10 nights at the Sunset Bay. We had the suite, which is a separate cottage towards the rear of the property. I did look in one of the rooms and they were of good size. The location, which is half-way between Rouseau and Portsmouth, was great for touring the island. Because of it's location, I would recommend a car rental. The owners are Belgian, and Roger was a chef. He has trained his kitchen staff very well, so the food is top-notch (He also cooks, himself). His wife, Marcella, manages the hotel. Her staff is also well-trained, and I've rarely seen a cleaner establishment in the Caribbean! No request was too much for them to respond to quickly! The one draw-back is the beach. There is a lot of sand, but there's also a lot of stones, so if you're going to go in swimming, reef shoes are a must. The setting is lovely, with lots of interesting plantings. An addad bonus is the presence of lots of big iguanas! They're very interesting to watch. There's also lots of birds, especially hummingbirds. The pool, unfortunnately, is located at the rear of the property, so it's not handy to use both it and the beach at the same time. On the other hand, the pool has lots of comfortable sun loungers and is a quiet place to swim and read or just soak up the sun. There's a complete dive operation and all-inclusive guests have free use of the snorkle equipment and get to go out on the dive boat for snorkle trips. All in all, guests really receive a lot for a relatively modest amount of money. This is a high-quality operation!!

We stayed at Sunset Bay Resort 8/3-8/10 2006- 2 adults and 4 children 20,15,14 and 7 in 2 rooms. Dominica is a beautiful island and Sunset Bay was good base to explore it from. It has a nice location on the caribbean side of the island. The beach is rocky and you need water shoes. The water was clear with lots of fish to see while snorkeling on the left side of beach. The rooms are basic, but comfortable. There is no AC, but nights were cool even in August and it wasn't needed. The rooms are about 200' from the beach and has a steady wind. The whole week bugs where not a problems at resort and we were even more surprised the we did not get eaten alive in rain forests as we expected. We had the AI meal plan. The food was good, but not a lot of selection. Drinks were strong and well stocked. They made local fresh fruit juice that the kids loved. There are nice gardens and a pool in the back of the resort. The owners and staff were very friendly and helpful. They will even pack you picnic lunches to take with you while you explore Dominica.
We rented a 4x4 and it was quite an adventure driving on the opposite side of road on very narrow, twisty, steep roads. I still think its the best way see the sites. We did the Boiling Lake hike- a must. It almost killed me and the wife, but kids had no problems on the mountian trails. It was worth it, even though kids showed us up! Local Guides costs us $40 to $150 a day, depending upon trip, that Sunset Back set up for us.
Sunset has lots of wildlife on site. We saw lots of humming birds, land crabs and lizards from 4" to 3' everywhere.
If you want a laid back vacation and your interests are nature related-GO. If you are expecting a 5 star resort, that you can just stay on the beach and resort, Sunset Bay and Dominica will not be your choice.

The vegetable meal option was just sautéed Vegetables. No rice, Potatoes, or beans, only a side of sautéed. The meal was expensive and extremely disappointing at a cost of 45. Worst meal on our 2 week Dominica vacation.

The owner was in the dining area the whole time and seemed more concerned about hanging out with a few guests than the chaos that is going around him.
Diner of three felt sorry for the minimal staff. We had the move out table to try and get away from the guest that smoked cigarettes the entire time we were there non stop.
First, this place looks like it needs maintenance, it’s not appealing. It obviously has potential but you can see there isn’t much effort spent on the basics and the grounds are unkept.
The waitress explained she started in the morning and after 9 pm is still here and asked to please bear with her as she is very tired.
The menu is very large and confusing and the actual menus are dirty and in need of a good cleaning.
The felt the food was ok and after waiting for so long it was late just wanted to get out of there.

+1
Just finished a stay at Sunset Bay (April 7 - 21st) and had a great experience. We came looking for an alternative to the cookie cutter Canadian all inclusives we always seemed to end up at (DR, Cuba, Mexico, Jamaica & even Roatan) and we definitely found it. That being said, don't come here with expectations of an All Inclusive just smaller. Dominica is a very unique island, and as such, all the accomodations on the island are widely varied, with Sunset Bay being one of the only ones that offers a true "All Inclusive" option. What we found was an alternative to an alternative and suited us (couple in late 20's, early 30's) very nicely.
We arrived late and LIAT, living up to its reputation, had lost my luggage between Barbados and Dominica. Right from the get go, our shuttle driver made sure we had beers in hand & was cheerful and informative, which went a long way in alleviating the stress from missing a piece of luggage.
Marcella and Roger, the Belgian owners, met us on arrival at the resort even though it was quite late and were very hospitable and sympathetic to my luggage situation. Having read many of the other reviews previous to coming here, I can honestly say we never found Roger or Marcella to be anything less than hospitable, accomodating and humourous with an old school european sensibility.
The staff were a bit laissez faire in terms of service, but we found this to be more of an island wide attitude rather than a problem with a particular establishment. We got to know a few of the restaurant staff by name and overall had very good experience with all the staff at the resort. The food is EXCELLENT. We are not picky eaters, nor are we foodies. We found breakfast & lunch to be exactly what we wanted, and the dinners to be extremely good. The lobster and fish were incredible, as can be attested to by the number of locals that frequent the restaurant. If we were going somewhere off the resort the next day, they would even pack us a cooler with lunch & drinks to take with us, which was awesome. Definitely have never experienced that at an AI resort.
The accomodations were simple, but comfortable and clean. There are no TV's, no AC, and very little hot water. The fan at night was just fine with us, and a shower that was on the refreshing side in the morning was a great way to shake off the extra Kubulis that were consumed the night before.
The grounds are beautiful, a freshwater river runs next to the resort, and the gardens vary from lush vegetation to cactus gardens. Small lizards, crabs and birds abound. The pool is small, clean and cool, with showers and bathrooms. We were often the only ones around the pool anyways, so the size of it was no concern to us. Be aware, while at the pool, you will likely hear the the sound of passing vehicles now and then due to the location of the pool area. Earphones. This is unavoidable when you look at the layout of the resort, and is often the case around Dominica as most establishments are located very close to the road.
The beachfront is unlike what you might find in other classic Caribbean destinations. The shoreline is rocky/pebbly, but quickly slopes to soft sand in the water. Above the shoreline was a stretch of sand where there were beach chairs arranged under either tall palms or leafy mangrove trees. It was shady and beautiful, and we had no problem stretching the hammock we brought between to of them on most afternoons. Don't come here for a whitesand beach experience, come here for what the island offers. Again, we often had the waterfront to ourselves, and fresh beers were always within a short distance.
We went snorkelling with the divemaster Stefan on our second day, which was quite fun. While you couldn't really compare it to somewhere like Roatan, it was still very cool and the marine life varied and plentiful. Stefan was informative and friendly, and on our 2nd last day even lent me his spear for Lionfish, as I had misplaced mine near Scott's Head a few days before. The snorkelling right from the shore and to the left is quite good and shouldn't be missed.
Sunset Bay lives up to its name: the sunsets are stellar.
As to arranging shuttles, taxis, etc. the staff in the office were always helpful, and we made sure to give clear instructions as to what we needed and when. Never had an issue, and Marcella even met us at 4am (yawn) on the morning of our departure to make sure everything went smoothly with our departure.
There are a million things to do on Dominica, and I would have gladly stayed another week or so. Would I return to Sunset Bay? Absolutely. Please let me know if you have any questions about Sunset Bay specifics, or Dominica.

Generally agree with previous reviews, food, gardens, pool and staff all very good, beach very rocky however the room is a bit basic for the price. Office at entrance has a small number of books for guests during the stay as well as a few souvenirs and some t-shirts.

I liked the place because it has a familiar atmosphere and it is directly located on a beach! You can have a morning dip in the calm ocean before you enjoy a yummi breakfast (no buffet, freshly made) on the terrace with ocean view. Especially in the evening the restaurant gets busy due to the best lobster in town (for a reasonable price). They also offer All-Inclusive for about $50,- more per day and it's worth because the menu prices are a little overprized in my opinion. Rooms all have seaview and are totally fine. Nothing special but clean and spacious enough to place your stuff. I would definitely recommend booking a tour via the hotel because they work with an excellent tourguide (he also organizes the transfers if needed). There are not many places to stay on Dominica and I definitely recommend it. You can always have a nice chat and cold beer with the owners in the evening, enjoy the sunset or check out the Iguanas in the garden (there used to be a lot more but you can still be lucky to see one).

5 of our 10 day trip to Dominica was spent at the Sunset Bay Club. We felt it was2 days too many at this hotel. The Dive shop and dive staff are firet rate. The diving is easy and beautiful. The hotel is immaculate. What we were dissipointed in is the so called "all inclusive" plan. If you choose this know that you will have a different menu from everbody else. The way we found out was on the first night we were there, the people on the table next to us were dining on a big pile of lobsters the people on the other side of us had big swordfish steaks. We were told we could not have these choices because were on the "All incl "plan and if we did it wld be an extra charge. We had a choice of chicken or steak and a salad. The chicken was one small dried out piece of thigh and the salad was a couple of leaves of lettuce with a pile of shredded carrots in the middle, one slice of tomato, one slice of cucumber, one slice of christophene. The main entre choices are the same every night for the all inclusives. The real menu is varied and interesting and the prices are reasonable. Weactually would have saved money by paying for each meal. The only good thing about "all inclusive is all the alcohol you can drink.

We didn't reserve in advance. We went in the off-season and after checking sunset out one day went back to stay for a week the next.
We flew in to Dominica but a lot of people do take the ferry to Dominica. We had a lot of trouble flying in and out -- if I went again I might try the ferry.
As of April/May there was no resident dive master. I would contact the owners- they can have one come in from elsewhere on the island. If your primary interest is diving, you might want to stay elsewhere. We did a lot of hiking and snorkeling and found that interesting.
But this is my answer on a complain were everyone always say we have the best Pinea Colada so I can not say something else!
Only wishes all the best to all my past clients and future clients who will pass beautiful days in our Nature Island Dominica that awaiting allots of tourism to support our country and enjoy all the fantastic view's above and under water that Dominica offers.
Bonjour,
