Guests at Fort Young Hotel and Dive Resort often commend the friendly and professional service, though a few have reported slow service at times. The rooms are celebrated for their cleanliness and modernity, with the bonus of ocean views, despite some guests finding the beds uncomfortable and noise levels problematic. While the hotel's atmosphere is generally considered welcoming, and its location is prime for exploring local attractions, the value proposition is questioned by many who find dining options pricey and repetitive. Amenities like the dive shop are a plus, but the small pool can get crowded.

Fort Young Hotel has an outstanding dive operation, and my five star rating and this review is primarily for their dive operation.

Fort Young Dive has an experienced, friendly, and professional dive team, led by Billy, a genial gentleman who has a wealth of knowledge about the island and its history. Billy served as our captain for two days of diving, was one of the dive guides on a third day, and also had made our whale watching trip fun and productive with multiple whale sightings. Baldwin was our captain the rest of the week, with Brad and Bert as exceptional dive guides. Since I need assistance getting in and out of the water, I want to thank all of them for all the kind help they gave me.

Their beautiful dive boat, Formidable (pronounced the French way), is one of the finest dive boats I’ve been on in 36 years of diving. Formidable is a 42’ catamaran that is truly decked out for maximum comfort and efficiency. It is an Arawak42 built by Aventura Boats in the Dominican Republic, and is a little over a year old. It has two fresh water hoses at the stern, two rinse tanks, three ladders, a nice marine head, a dry storage area, plenty of shade on the upper deck, and ample space for 30 divers. We had less than 10 divers on the boat for all five days, so we were taken care of very well by the excellent crew.

Although the reefs have a lot of algae on them, we still found plenty of interesting stuff on every dive - including the largest barrel sponges I’ve ever seen, red-banded lobsters, squid, octopus, eels, scorpionfish, crab, cowfish, and spaghetti worms galore.

Our waterfront accommodations were clean and spacious, but because we were in the older wing of the hotel, we did have a few minor maintenance issues. Everyone at the hotel is friendly and polite, but our biggest concern about returning is being able to consistently find good food. Breakfasts at Palisades were included in our package, and were decent if you are a big meat eater. I asked for oatmeal for several days, and they began making it midway through our stay, which made me happy. The dinner menu doesn’t change so we only ate two dinners there.

All in all, it was a very good week of diving and we are glad we stayed at Fort Young.

Have you ever snorkeled in pleasantly warm water, immersed in sparkling water that tingles comfortably on your skin? This is Champagne, one of Fort Young's diving destinations. The pearls come from the seabed due to the volcanic structure of the small Caribbean island of Dominica. In the evening we enjoyed dinner in Fort Young's restaurant with a view over the sea, friendly staff and delicious local food. Waking up in a spacious, newly renovated room with an astonishing view over the ocean made our day. We began with a fitness session in the air-conditioned fitness center (all LifeFitness equipment) and over a hearty Creole and international breakfast, we immediately ate all the calories we had previously sweated off. After a divine session, we spent the afternoon at the pool with a stunning view of the sea. We enjoyed the beautiful bar before our dinner and, depending on the weather, we decided to go inside or outside.
We also picked up some great souvenirs in the small but excellent retail store. The art gallery right next to the store was impressive. Another good thing about Fort Young is its location: you can walk to the center of the capital Rousseau in just 3 minutes. In just 15 minutes by car you can marvel at the beautiful Trafalgar Waterfalls or bathe in the natural hot springs of Ti Kwen - an incredibly relaxing experience.
Fort Young is an ideal option for a few relaxing days of diving and nature in Dominica.

Fort Young was a great place to stay based on its central location in Roseau. The staff was exceptional, taking care of us and making us feel welcome.

The faculties were great except for the limited food and drink selection in the restaurants. The food was great but after two weeks of the same menu, things got very repetitive.

The standard ocean view rooms in the older section were nice with great balconies overlooking the Caribbean, but the bed mattress was not the most comfortable and the some things could use some upgrading.

Cruise ships blocking our view everyday was a disadvantage.

The staff concierge was awesome in booking our tours. The hotel engages Khatt Tours and our driver/guide Kurt Jeremy is very knowledge about the history, flora/fauna and best places to visit while in Dominica. His friendly, professional and knowledgeable service will have us coming back to island again.

Overall we very much enjoyed our stay!

We had gotten married 2 years ago and spent our wedding night at Fort Young. The stay was so amazing that on our 2nd Anniversary we wanted to re-create our experience and THEY DID NOT DISAPPOINT! The room was made up with rose petals, Balloons, a "Happy Anniversary" Card and a lovely bottle of JP Chenet chilled on ice. The welcome staff were super kind, the hotel was beautiful! The breakfast was tasty and filling! We are definitely looking forward to staying at Fort Young again.

I chose this hotel because of the inhouse dive shop and it was brilliant. The staff in the dive shop look after you and your gear before, during and after the diving and were very friendly and knowledgeable. The hotel looks great and the rooms were lovely (ask for a sea view). The staff throughout the hotel were all friendly and helpful. There were two things that let the hotel down for us. The pool area (although lovely) was small considering the size of the hotel and there were not enough sun loungers (the ones that were there were uncomfortable). The food in the main dining room is a buffet for breakfast and dinner and based on the cost and selection that was available at breakfast we did not bother with the dinner buffet. It is a lovely hotel in a fab location looking out at the ocean but not sure we would stay again.

The card reader to our room failed on our 2nd day. We were totally locked out of our room and it took hours to fix the issue. We requested a new room and were finally transferred but the A/C in that room was "spotty" at best. The safe failed one day because the batteries fell out of it and we had to have security open it. Service in the restaurant was So slow, even by Caribbean standards. Our bill was incorrect at check out. We had requested an upgraded room at our original price because of the issue with the locked card reader which cause us to miss a day of scuba diving. The correct price was applied to our bill for 2 days, then all other days were charged at a higher price. The issue was resolved after we caught the error.

We waited one night for almost an hour to sign our bill after dinner. Restaurant staff were more interested in chatting with each other than waiting on customers most days. One afternoon we waited 25 minutes for lunch but no one even came by to offer us drinks. We finally gave up and left.

On a better note, the maid service was wonderful and the dive shop was great. We used the Fort Young dive shop for scuba diving but dove with Dive Dominica because Fort Young did not have their own dive boats when we were there. Both were wonderful and I highly recommend either one of them. But--if you are looking for a dive resort. This hotel is NOT a dive resort.

We frequently travel to the Caribbean but service was poor even by Caribbean standards. The hotel is undergoing some renovations and I hope these improve it overall. We had high hopes for this hotel but I cannot recommend it.

Three reasons for the low rating. First: we stayed more than a week in the hotel and are scheduled to return for a night after our trip to Martinique. Because the ferry to Martinique leaves late we asked for late checkout. They asked in return for extra $ 60 for two extra hours although the hotel is half empty 2. Reason: we had booked for New Year’s Eve a table in the restaurant for a five course celebration dinner. We were on time, table ready but apparently no waiter assigned to the table. Everyone around us had served but not us. When my husband complained to the manager after an hour without any food they started to serve us but no apology. By that time the main course was already almost cold. Mistakes can happen but if no apology something is seriously wrong with management. 3. Reason. The breakfast buffet is only for people who like big cooked breakfasts but very little on offer for those who want a light breakfast. No Joghurt, cereal, oatmeal or slices of cheese. Only cup cakes and toast with jam. For that overpriced.

This is our second trip to Dominica. The island is the Nature Island and it doesn’t disappoint. The Fort Young Hotel is very well run. Everyone was very friendly. I will say dealing with them via phone or email can be awkward but face to face is fantastic. Any little issue is resolved quickly, and those were few. We did not sign up for the all inclusive as we wanted to try places in town but did have breakfast included. It’s buffet, a bit repetitive but the quality was good and a friendly staff. Exchange rate within the resort was good so we never bothered to convert US to EC.

We were scuba diving and the team at the on-site dive shop were some of the best I’ve ever dived with. I’m a dive instructor with dives around the world in some of the best places available as well as throughout the Caribbean. The staff were always helpful and safety conscious while keeping things light and fun. They have great rental gear that my wife used some of. The reefs are in fantastic shape, probably the best in the Caribbean at this time. Enormous barrel sponges, turtles, eels, lobsters, crabs and plenty of reef fish. The shop has two dive boats, one a typical dive boat for maybe 10 divers. We used their other boat that hold 32 divers. We had a total of 18 divers and had plenty of room. Towels are provided as well as fruit bowls between dives. Two camera tanks and spray hoses for spraying yourself down if you like. Air or Nitrox is available. They have at least 2 DMs in the water and sometimes 3 or 4. We will be going back, it’s that good.

The onsite restaurant
The Food was good and priced about the same as others on that side of the island. You will experience the true meaning of island time here. It is a relaxing atmosphere, and you will not be rushed to leave your table. The staff are nice but not in any hurry to get you water or drinks of any kind. This is an area that needs some work. Have patience.

Dive Shop and staff
The dive shop is well run and organized. The boats are new and fully set up for divers. The tanks or filled and recheck before loaded on the boats to make sure they are full of air. Safety is stressed on the boat and during the dives. The captain and dive master are very competent. We had Brad as a dive master and Goldwyn as Captain. Brad led the group at a slow pace in the water and pointed out many things that we would have missed without his trained eye and experience. Goldwyn was always there to welcome us back to the boat and help us with our equipment. They have great personality’s and are a lot of fun to dive with I give them 5+stars and wish all dive crews were as good as they are.

Rooms and pool
The rooms are clean and in good repair. Very comfortable and well maintained. The room attendants did a great job. Room was cleaned daily with fresh towels as needed for the shower and others for the pool.
The pool was always clean and had a great pool bar for drinks and food. A perfect way to spend the afternoon after diving, and to enjoy the magical sunsets. Ion is a great bartender and very friendly.

You will enjoy your stay at Fort Young.

Beautiful hotel with a great location right on the water, but be careful when it comes to billing.
You can wake up in the morning and find a cruise ship docked practically right outside the window.
In the restaurant, certain dishes and drinks are only offered at certain times. Officially, it's "last or" until 5:30 p.m., but you often don't get these offers after 5:15 p.m. If you do get them, it can happen that the price you're supposed to be charged is up to 20% higher than the offer. The respective employee assures you that they have no influence on this and the reception doesn't want to deal with the issue either.
When you make the final payment, the hotel will quickly debit the invoice amount from your credit card in USD if possible, unfortunately not at the correct and optimal daily rate. But here they were willing to cancel the booking in USD and make a booking in the local currency. So be careful!!!

Staying at the Fort Young hotel for 10 day. 5 days of scuba through their dive shop. Do we need a rental car?
Answer from catwoman7

Depends, hiring a car gives you the freedom to come and go as you please. Some roads are narrow and many are steep-ish and winding. I was fine, I actually enjoyed the experience but my husband doesn’t like to drive there. On the plus side all the roads have been tarmac-ed and are much better to drive on.

I did some searching online and there are hotels being constructed in Dominica but I don't believe it is in the Roseau area. They must have begun the renovations within this year. Anichi Resort and Spa (120 room), the Cabrits Resort Kempinski, Dominica with 160 rooms and the Jungle Bay Resorts and Spa with 120 rooms are both expected to begin welcoming guests in early 2019. This was what I found.

Dominica is not a beach resort and there is no typical Caribbean beaches on this coast. However, there are some beautiful spots and Fort Young is right on the seafront

Dear Guest The water in Dominica is very safe to drink, you may do so from your tap or from the water fountain at the hotel. Bottled water is also available for sale at the Restaurant and Bars.
