The Good: Great secluded adults-only section of Grand Memories. Very close to beach. Next to beach bar. Better quality restaurants and bars than the regular all-ages hotel. Great for couples, small groups of friends. Great for relaxing, enjoying the beach, partying a bit by the pool in the afternoon with the entertainment staff, or go out to the Sanctuary bar at night before going into Downtown Varadero. Workers are very friendly and great. Shout out to Karl, the restaurant manager, and Sendry and Natali, the staff at the beach bar. Shout out also to our butler Gretchel, our cleaning staff Yula, and the pool bar staff Merle, Yamilia, and Barbara. Everyone is dedicated to their jobs. The Bad: The food is obviously not going to be great - you know this, you're not going for the food. If you have that in mind, you should expect some stomach troubles. As long as you're not too "adventurous" with the food and water, eat more raw fruits, bread, and lobster/sea food, you should be fine. But again, don't expect to be "wow"ed by the food. And also, pay attention to what you eat. If it has been sitting out in the sun for the day, perhaps skip that delicious-looking smoked salmon. Other than food, the hotel can use a little renovations here and there. That being said, our room did not experience any issues besides the balcony door being a little tough to open, and one of the outlets didn't work. But who cares, we were really only in there to shower, sleep, and apply sunscreen. The Weather: Given we went in mid-July, it was rainy season. It rained twice during our stay, once overnight, and once in the afternoon for about 3 hours. But I loved when it rained because the beach waters were crystal clear the day after usually, and the wind was a little bit at a minimum in the mornings. Also, since I went in July, it was scorching hot, and very high humidity. But I was expecting that. The Beach: You know this as well - Cuba has amazing beaches. Period. Next. The Atmosphere: The country as a whole, the locals are very friendly. They love where they are from and they are happy you are in their country; at least that the sense I get. We took a scooter to downtown Varadero, and it was really cool. We parked and walked around. The only downside was that to use the bathrooms anywhere (if you can even call them that) you had to tip to get toilet paper or soap. Also, leaving to come home was absolutely terrible. They had four flights leaving at the same time, so there was a period of waiting in a line up for 2 hours in the scorching heat. I don't know how they haven't gotten it right yet. The other issues with the flying portion of the trip was mainly Air Canada Vacations' fault, not Cuba's. On the resort, the visitors are mostly Canadian, bubbly, out-going, and just ready to have a great time. Old meets Young meets Younger, and you just become friends with everyone. Final Thought: Just understand that you're going to a less-established country, they want your money, they don't have access to a lot, and you're not going to be served a brand-new, hipster, modern downtown condo villa, as a resort, and you'll be pleasantly surprised. I got a tan, I got to relax, I got to hang out with my partner, enjoy the people, and do nothing for one week - I can't complain.

What a great 2nd vacation at the Sanctuary. We were there from 1-8 July. Room: We were repeat guest so the resort updated us to a very fabulous suite. Two bathrooms (two toilets, shower and bathtub), a living room, very large bedroom and lovely balcony with pool view. The air-conditioner worked very well and kept the space at a comfortable temperature. The fridge was restocked daily and we always had a bottle of extra water available. The maid did an amazing job keeping our living space very clean. There also is a safe available in the room. Rooms are all close to the pool and beach. Beach: Absolutely amazing. You can take long walks in both directions. We never had a problem getting a chair as we were on the go early. But so were many others and the spots filled up quickly. One of the bartenders comes around and takes drink orders at the beach. Pool: Usually went to the pool in the afternoon and always found a nice spot in the shade. The pool itself was warm but that is to be expected in July. The pool area was kept very clean. Food: Most nights we ate at the "Ave Del Paraiso" by the sanctuary pool. Karl (exceptional service) did an amazing job to make sure everything ran smoothly. We also tried the Asian restaurant which was very good. All in all for us and other guest everybody was happy with the food. Staff: Absolutely fantastic they will do anything to make your stay a memorable one. Both of our concierges handled all requests in a quick and efficient way. (Bldg: 30) Check in: Could run a bit smoother. Drop off is at the Grand Memories were then you need to wait for transportation to the Sanctuary. We arrived with a large group so it took a bit of time to check in. We would definitely recommend this resort and we are already planning our next trip there.

This was our first trip to Cuba and we chose Sanctuary at Grand Memories primarily because of the reviews here. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves and would certainly be open to returning if only for the incredible soft sand beach and swimable and crystal blue water. For those who have never been to Cuba, I would encourate you to manage your expectations. Although Sanctuary is a 4.5 star property, it is NOT comparable to an all inclusive 4.5 star in Mexico or Jamaica. That said, the staff work very hard to do the best they can and although the food options are limited by the American embargo, you will not starve and will find something delicious to eat. The rooms were kept clean, but once again, manage your expecations when it comes to their ability to maintain things. You may find some of the electrical outlets don't work and the lighting dim because of the fragile electrical utilities in the region. A few tips: Bring your own facecloths (they don't provide them), bring a good sized insulated re-usable mug/cup for your drinks as the plastic cups they provide are quite small (maybe 6 oz), if you're going to the beach grab a few drinks at the beach bar at the entrance to the path to the beach because there is no drink service at the beach, make your a la carte dinner reservations for your entire stay on the first day you arrive. The best dinner is at the Sanctuary restaurant Ave Paradiso. The other places are just so-so. If you do go to the buffet, staying at Sancturary gives you your own section in the Diamond Club area which is a bit quieter and the service is better. Bring some bug spray with DEET...the mosquitos are very hungry in the morning and evening. We were in section 35 which we really liked as it was very quiet and close to the beach. And finally, leave a tip for the hard working staff...it means more than you can possibly imagine. A few staff who really went above and beyond were Jessica and Diancy in the Ave Paradiso Restaurant at Sanctuary. Karl, whose name comes up often on this forum, is an incredibly skilled, detail oriented, helpful and warm Food and Beverage Director. And Jesus the server at the Buffet in the Diamond Club section. His sense of humor and kindness made our stay very memorable.

This was my 3rd trip to the Sanctuary - a haven nestled within Grand Memories. The Sanctuary has its own restaurant, bar and pool. Of all the resorts I have stayed at in Cuba this is my favourite. The management team at the Sanctuary is what separates this resort from all others. Te manager Sabine is amazing and very hands on interacting to make sure all needs are met. The unsung hero is definitely Asier the assistant manager. The guy is everywhere doing everything. Always asking how are things and helping make sure your stay is perfect. Special thanks to Asier for all your hard work. Also a special mention to Grand Memories manager Chaxxi who was always present in the Grand Memories side making sure thinks ran smoothly. Thanks to all and see you again in a few months.
