This was my third trip to Varadero, but my first time at Iberostar Varadero. In past, I stayed at Iberostar Lagune Azul (2010) and Ocean Varadero El Patriarcha (2013). By far, this was my best trip down to Cuba, simply because of the quality of service received. In late-May, travelled with my family for my Dad’s 65th birthday and retirement celebration. The resort is located around 30 minutes from the airport, and is located right beside the Royalton Hicacos Resort & Spa. I like that it is a bit secluded from the main road, making it seem like a 5-star hideaway. The foyer of the resort is stunning, and very appealing! Upon booking, I made some requests, and each was met. I was located in Block 19, which was close to the main lobby, pool area, and restaurants. For accessibility reasons, this may be the preferred choice as its least walking. To note, most of the resorts in Cuba do not have elevators. I requested a higher room and was on the 3rd floor in a Double Room with a massive King side bed. The room was absolutely spacious; both fan and A/C working well throughout the stay. No creepy crawlers to be found – as this is sometimes the case in hot climate countries. What I can say is the staff work very hard around the clock to make this resort a full 5-star experience. The beach was absolutely breathtaking, and crystal clear – you can actually see your feet in the water. It was very clean, and no seaweed to be found. There are plenty of beach chairs with shade, and without for those who like to tan. I like the fact that there is a grill and bar area close by which serves salads, burgers, hot dogs and drinks. Stick around until 7pm, and get a glimpse of that beautiful sunset. I spent a lot of my time by the pool, which has a great swim-up bar in the centre. There are a lot of activities happening throughout the day in this area. And, there is also another grill station and buffet restaurant to have lunch at. In regards to the food, we always get complainers that believe the food is to bland. I honestly had no complaints like in my past times, however I found there was more variety at this resort. The main buffet is great! The breakfast included omelet stations, various cold cut meats, cheeses, fresh juices, fruits, and carbs. For lunch, you have two buffet options and the grill. For dinner, you have the main buffet (which changed its meals every night) and a few à la carte restaurants. At the buffet, I love the fact that the meat is picked and prepared to your liking! My favourite à la carte was La Parrilla which was more of an international cuisine – the fish was amazing! We also tried La Dorada (Mediterranean) and Manzoku (Asian). In addition to activities in the day, there is nightly entertainment. One night was saw The Lion King, and another there was an international dance show. What I would love to see at this resort is a Sports Bar – that would be awesome. In regards to the Internet, you can buy an Internet card from the front desk, and the best reception is in the lobby area. Kudos to all the hard working staff that make this place great! I’d recommend it any day.

This was our second trip to Cuba: way better this time! Our room was very clean but in need of an update. Food was better than expected: tasty, good variety, plentiful, but in all restaurants there were lots of flies. A la carte restaurants were OK: Gourmet at the top, Japanese at the bottom. Nightly entertainment was a hit or miss: we started our week with an excellent rock show, but everything went down from there. Singers were much better than dancers. The night disco was OK, but played only Latin hits. The majority of the guests were from South America, which somehow explains the music choice. Some hints: - If you book it from Canada, you may be offered an option called "Best Deal Room". This means a room on the ground floor, which can be great or not so good. If you insist, you may get an upper floor room, but facing the back of the resort, in buildings 11-16. - The exchange rate CUC/CAD: at the resort 64-66CUC/100CAD, at CADECA Varadero Plaza Americas 70-72, at CADECA Varadero Plaza Hicacos 68-69. It is worth going to Varadero only if you also want to visit or do some shopping. Otherwise the cost of the Varadero Beach Tour bus is 5CUC/person, which by far offsets the better exchange rate. -Best shopping: Artesan Market: at the very end of the Varadero bus. -Weather forecasts: ignore them! We freaked out before the departure, due to the awful weathernetwork.ca forecasts. In perspective, I can say that best predictors were: accuweather.com and myweather2.com. I gave this resort 5 stars not because it is a 5 star resort (it is not!), but because it is located on a heavenly beach and the Cuban people are genuinely friendly and work very hard to please tourists. Tip well! The worst part of everything have been MOSQUITOES! On the first night, I got 17 bites on one leg. Bring OFF or whatever you know and spray yourselves before you go out at night. I don't understand why the resort keeps ornamental ponds and does NOTHING about mosquitoes! We had a great time and a very relaxing week, which we spent mostly on the beach. We shall probably return.

The room was bright and clean. The hotel maid clearly took pride in it. The downsides were upon arrival our room wasn't ready despite it being after 4pm. We weren't given any info about what we should be - we had never stayed in an all-inclusive before so some suggestions would have been great. In fact we got a lot of helpful information from another guest. You can book 2 nights in the special restaurants and we chose the Japanese one. This restaurant was everything I expected good food and entertainment. You do need to book though as soon as you can. You do get 5 hours free wifi which works quite well in set locations. The pools had a bar and snack food. The beach was very close with helpful staff. More helpful is you tipped them at every occasion. The evening entertainment was....well... poor. it changed every night to make it more entertaining. The waiter staff were friendly and efficient with drink service. We had no hot water in our en suite which was a bit chilly. Our door stuck on the way in and had clearly warped but nothing was done about it. The breakfast was plentiful and better when freshly laid out early. Much busier around 9am. Can recommend the hotdogs from the outside BBQ snack bar. The evening meal food was again plentiful and a good selection. The main issue I have with the large buffet is the amount of flies and birds just flying around on the food. There needed to be more labels on the food as sometimes it was quite difficult to tell what something was,

Dear Louise, Thank you for choosing the Iberostar Selection Varadero for your recent holiday. Firstly, we apologise for the lack of information upon your arrival. We understand how important the check-in process can be in providing a first impression of our hotel so we aim for it to be as quick and easy as possible so that our guests can start to enjoy their holiday. We regret that this was not the case for you this time. We would also like to express our surprise that you experienced issues with the hot water and the door in your room and we would always advise guests to contact a member of staff to have such issues rectified immediately. Also, we do have a strict pest-control plan in place, although it is not always possible to completely avoid the presence of insects or birds during warmer seasons. We will pass on your comments about this and about our entertainment programme to the relevant departments so that we can continue to improve in all areas. On the other hand, we are delighted that you mentioned so many other important aspects of our hotel, the vast range of culinary delights both in our specialty restaurants and in our buffet, our helpful staff, pristine rooms, and optimal location. We are so pleased that so many of the key features of our hotel have been highlighted and enjoyed. We hope that your return journey was a pleasant one and that you will come and visit us again soon. Our trip began by staying at an Iberostar Parque Central in Havana before moving into this hotel, the difference between these two hotels is quite unbelievable given they are both Iberostars. The hotel in Varadero leaves much to be desired, the drinks supplied by the lobby bar were often supplied with flat juice or flat tonic, even after telling the staff. The waiters at the bar were very nice and worked hard, it was such a shame that that their hard work was being undone by bar staff unable to make drinks consistently, depending on who made your drink would determine its quality, the difference is quite incredible and recommend the staff follow a instruction booklet to improve. The food at the hotel is not at a level one would expect, the only exception to this is the gourmet restaurant, the food there is excellent. The buffet lacks imagination and creativity to keep guests intrigued and happy, a recommendation would be themed nights, i.e. Indian. The food cooked was often raw or dried out, the meat station would see meat sitting on a plate, waiting to be cooked instead of in a fridge under the hot plate to prevent bacteria and flies from contaminating the food. This is a theme that dominates throughout the buffet restaurant, many guests were not using tongs to pick up food and even in some cases returning unwanted food with their hands. It was no wonder that 6 out of 8 guests in our party ended up unwell, the hotel must have been aware of this, a hand sanitizing lotion was installed at the front door to the restaurant, but it was not enforced that all guests must use this. The omelette and pasta stations were very good and it would be good if there was more than one station as these were very popular resulting in long waits. Our room did not seem to be getting cleaned very well, the floor felt dirty and our feet would often be dirty after walking on the floor. Our bed sheets were changed maybe once on our 11 nights there. All facilities in the room did work with no problems. The pool area was very nice, however, the pool DJ would play the same tracks every day which became very monotonous. The games room contains a pool table from a scrapyard by the condition of it so is pointless to play, not to mention, the room contains a pane of glass smashed and left in the doorway broken and sharp ready for a kid to seriously hurt themselves on it, simply covering this up would have been better than leaving it. The pool bar is nice and drinks are good, however, similar to the omelette and pasta station could do with more people working on it, especially when the one server is stuck making a round of cocktails. The beach is fantastic and an ideal place to relax. The cigar lounge is at first a great bar, our first time in their was met with nice service and trying some cigars and drinks, with no reference to "rules" that are not listed in the welcome booklet or upon entering the bar. Our next time in the empty cigar bar we were just looking for some drinks but were told as there was 6 of us we needed to by 2 cigars, just felt like things were being made up on the spot. Overall, a hotel that was recommended to us by my parents who were there over 8 years ago and felt then it was the best hotel they had ever been too has gone completely down hill and not a hotel we would look to return to.

Our family went on what might be our last family vacation together and the four of us had to pick an all inclusive resort within a certain budget. We picked the Iberostar varradero. It has a beautiful beach, the entire place was clean, the staff are all very friendly and helpful. The food selection was great for what is expected in Cuba and the cooking staff where awesome with us :) My youngest celebrated his birthday there and the maid had put up banners, the staff made a cake and sang happy birthday at breakfast and same at dinner. We had a fantastic time in the pool, the beach, and enjoyed the shooting, archery along with the nightly entertainment. Highly recommended resort to go to for a fantastic vacation. People talk about the food there but they forget that it is Cuba not Mexico. Our next vacation will be back to this resort :)
