I had a wonderful second stay at this hotel, which is the first time I have ever repeated a hotel. The beach was absolutely amazing, with calm waters in the morning and some waves in the afternoon. The service was excellent, with friendly personnel who provided normal and pressure-free service. The food was okay, but for Cuba it was actually very good, with mainly chicken and fish in the main buffet and plenty of salad, ice cream was perfect. The room was clean. The beach and cleaning services were both five-star, while the food and service were four to five-star.. Overall, it was one of my best vacations ever, and I will definitely come back to this resort.

I read a lot about this hotel before I went so had some ideas of expectations. The hotel was beautiful and very distinctive compared to others in the area with the colours and roofs. We loved the hotel. The staff were friendly, the food wasn’t 5* but was nice and your belly was always full. The beach was absolutely amazing, so beautiful. The only real complaint I had was only twice did a waiter ask us if we wanted a drink on the beach. Yes we could walk to the bar, but I was being lazy and wanted to relax. I thoroughly enjoyed my holiday here and 100% recommend the hotel. No it’s not 5* Mexico but your in Cuba- go with that in mind and you will not be disappointed. In fact it exceeded my expectations with the reviews that I had read. Beautiful place, beautiful atmosphere and great people!

Had a fabulous time. The beach is perfect, the pool is gorgeous, and the people are the nicest. We had a lovely time lounging around, eating at the many restaurants, and even getting a massage at the spa. Marleny was extremely helpful and provided all the help needed in understanding the facilities. Would love to return

Resort is very clean and well maintained. Staff are friendly, genuine and demonstrate warm Cuban hospitality. Rooms are large, well serviced thru the week (remember to tip your room attendants) Food was plentiful, lots of option on the buffet for every meal. You will find something you like :) If you don't, well, you just picky. I can say this, because I AM just picky, painfully so. I enjoyed several items Beach ??? The best I have seen to date. Simply incredible

While the title might be a bit click baity the resort was anything but that. Without going in to a long drawn essay about the place let me put it down as simply as possible Rooms - We stayed in 2401, the room was MASSIVE with plenty of space for us to move around and have our suitcase open without being intrusive. -The Bathroom was equally large, with a large mirror, massive soaker tub, clean washroom - The water temp in the shower was very good, however the angle of the showerhead along with the pressure while not weak may not be up everyone's requirements. - Room was equipped with a large closet/iron/iron board/safe/TV with some Canadian Channels/mini fridge which was always stocked up with whatever was consumed - The amount of light in the room could have been better, but it was not terrible. The bathroom in comparison was well lite and made getting ready super easy Food -This was a true surprise, the buffet was well stocked with all the usual items including a fresh juice station, crepe station as well as plenty of dishes to have a hearty breakfast -Off the Ala-Carte restaurants there we at at the Armadillo and Caribe both of which were excellent, well prepared foods, with good flavour, bottom line we could have arrived with none of the 'usual' supplies and eaten happily everyday. Beach - Super clean -Helpful staff to get your chairs/umbrellas - Beach Grill to offer some basic grub if you didn't want to walk all the way back to the buffet Things of note The bars are not all equal, you will often find some supplies are out for the day at one bar but available at another, this was something we could not quite figure out but at the end of the day it was not the worst we have experienced when traveling to Cuba. Tipping- Gone are the days of old, as we were a group of 8 adults our avg tip was $5CAD, the conversion rate ranged from 85-100 Peso for each CAD converted, with the cost of milk/eggs being around 150peso to give an idea. All in all this place was amazing, with super helpful staff, chamber maids, bartenders, pretty much anyone you interact with spoke English with a high proficiency and tried to accommodate you as best as they could. 100% will go back.

This is our 3rd visit to this special resort and again despite all the supply and shortage issues, Cuba and it’s beautiful people didn’t let us down. Despite being a ‘repeater’ and emailing over prior to our visit requesting a room on building 12 or 13 we were initially placed in building 11. I think the confusion is our Butlers were not aware we had visited the resort before. Easily sorted, moved next morning to Room 1301, our preferred building, facing the Wooded area between the Beach and resort area. It’s beautifully peaceful and calm in the evenings, sitting out staring at the stars, sipping rum!! Room itself was the standard junior suite layout. Rooms are tired but fully functional. Bed was comfortable. The hotel is slowly updating and renovating the rooms building by building, which is wonderful to see. Again we had chosen to book Diamond Club as this allows us to book a la carte restaurants at convenient times…or it used to!! Now the hotel has the policy of booking Diamond Club at 6pm or 830pm. I failed to see the logic of management with this decision at it reduces the value of Diamond Club by allowing the rest of the hotel guest the best time slots for the restaurants. We tried it for a couple of days at 830pm and for us it was too late, so the Butlers arranged for our times to be altered to 730pm. This worked much better for us and we are grateful for their understanding. We also did the Diamond Club boat trip to Cayo Blanco. A great day out, the weather was great and the boat trip team excellent. Restaurants: All a la carte restaurants are to some extent affected by the supply issues, but we ate at all of them and there was something on their menus to please the most fussy of palates. During 2 weeks we didn’t have one bad meal. Armadillo Tex Mex, The Italian, The International Pearl, The Caribe, Nibbles and the Beach Restaurant all had a different experience for their guests. Bars: The main bar is by far the busiest and we therefore preferred the quieter Jazz bar on the 1st floor by the Buffet Restaurant. We only experienced one drink shortage during the whole holiday and that was when the Jazz Bar was without normal Gin for 3 days. They had spicy Gin, but fortunately there is always something else to drink!! By far our favourite bar was the Diamond Club Beach Bar. It’s spectacular beach views and ability to generate a cool breeze regardless of the weather, it was lifesaver. The guys Juan-Carlos, Yadir, Elessor and Giovani were brilliant for the whole 2 weeks. Beach & Pool: For the 1st time we spent the whole 2 weeks of our stay on the beach. The gentle breeze was enough to keep you from overheating, as soon as you went in to the pool area the wind dropped and the temperature rose to uncomfortable levels. The beach was beautiful, the water cool and refreshing. Staff: Cuban people are amongst the most friendly, the most willing to please and strive their hardest to make sure you enjoy a fabulous experience during your stay in their country, regardless of the many hardships that they are suffering. All the staff we interacted with were pleasant, their English excellent and attitude always so helpful. From the cleaners, gardeners, restaurant staff, Butlers all the way up to senior management Thais and Jose Martin, their focus was making your stay as enjoyable as possible. The list of staff below are the highlight of the Cuban team that we interacted with on a daily basis. our holiday would not have been the perfect, restful and enjoyable stay it was. They are a massive credit to the Royalton. GRACIAS MON AMIGOS!!! Betty (Italian) Angel (Italian) Kirenia (Italian) Doyle (Italian) Yoly (Italian) Julito (Italian Night) Betty Butler Leo Butler ilyanna Butler Alberto Butler Gabriel Butler Alex Butler Rene Mojena (Security) Janet (pool bar) Thais Head of Butler Services Juan Carlos (Beach Bar) Gianvani (Beach Bar) Yadir (Beach Bar) Elessor (Beach Bar) Barbara Iris (Main bar) Anya (Everywhere) Jose Luis (Artistic Gardener) Rodney (Jazz Bar) Barven (Turn down) Odette (Caribe) We cannot wait until we return.

It was so nice to return to Cuba, we had a wonderful stay at the Royalton Hicacos. The food was plenty, never went hungry, plenty of shrimp, crab and even lobster. Truly enjoyed their Cuban dishes (chicken and pork my favourites) We couldnt have asked for better weather (hot and sunny, a couple of thunderstorms but just at night). Cuba has the best beaches in the Caribbean. We truly enjoyed this relaxing vacation.

The resorts, the beach & the service was amazing. Whenever we asked for something it was delivered. Food is not an issue here, we had a lot of variety. Services was number one. Coffee bar has that charming atmosphere with all the drinks. The entertainments were very energetic.

We visited Cuba in May. We were booked as Diamond Club members and were given a prompt check in. During this time we were shown to our butler area and were told which restaurants were available. They were then allocated on random days. The room was a good size and clean. The air con was fantastic we never felt the heat at night and we had a balcony with a nice view over some lovely lit little streams. The hotel itself is beautiful. The wooden walkways and bridges are lovely, they require a lot of maintenance but its a lovely area. The main hotel bar is nice and service is good. They often run out of ingredients but baring in mind the political situation in Cuba its understandable They always had rum, beer and soft drinks. The one issue is this bar gets very busy nearly every night you struggled for seats. There is extra seating near pool so maybe put a couple of tables out there. The pool is nice, although there is no deep part so if your tall like me you cant really swim. The swim up bar is great. A little tip bring giant water bottles! otherwise you only get tiny cups and constantly run empty. The food in general really wasn't great. I didn't like the buffet, breakfast in the Italians was always good. If you want food i would get Cuban cuisine or as close as you can to it otherwise with the shortages it often felt like they were putting a square peg in a round hole. The bistro and nibbles bar were always good for a quick bite however. We were disappointed one day to find out the golf that was included with the diamond club did not include any clubs or buggy hire. This should have been pointed out prior. It wouldn't have been an issue if we were informed however $77 dollars on arrival to the course was a bit of a shock. We found out those that booked the dolphin trip had a similar experience (no lunch or dolphin encounter). We did this separate and found we had everything included. The people and staff are what make this trip. They are so friendly and would break your back for you. Honestly the best and friendliest service i have ever encountered. we were unsure on the tipping culture here, we weren't asked for a single tip. If you give them they are very appreciated but never asked for. On my last night i wanted a cigar box, just the box. A lady told me to take anyone i wanted, I had no significant tips left but gave her left over medicine. She was so thankful it put into perspective the kind of issues they currently have. The beach is the best beach i have ever been on. It is amazing. Shallow for around 200 yards. White sand. Warm crystal blue water. Diamond club never had an issue getting beds and had our own amazing bar with the best views and bottles of crystal. Overall the hotel, like the country is beautiful and so friendly but has its issues. Nearly all aren't the hotels fault. Just the hand they are dealt. But brilliant we loved it!

This was our third visit to the Royalton and was just as amazing as the last visits. Would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a relaxing chilled holiday. The beach is outstanding, sea is shallow, clear and luke warm and kept impeccably clean. Always enough sunbeds even when the hotel is full. Pool area is lovely also. Those travelling to Cuba will no doubt be aware of the economic struggles but the food in the hotel is plentiful, albeit not to a UK 5 star standard. Always enough choices for every taste. Don't expect things like bacon, sausages and fries. Just go with the flow of what Cuba has to offer. Really nice omelettes at breakfast, there's a daily BBQ on the beach and an ice cream parlour which is a nice touch. Rooms are spacious and comfortable and have good air conditioning. The staff at the hotel are outstanding and most have worked at the Royalton for many years. Yanira who works the breakfast service is a diamond. Carlos and Daniel on the beach bar were fantastic at keeping all the guests hydrated and delivered to your sun bed! Yenisei in the lobby bar is amazing at her job. Also Carlos in the Disco bar and Carlos who makes your omelettes at breakfast. Wonderful hard working people. We visited Varadero Town 3 times. Good place to visit and some nice bars and restaurants. $5 return per person on the bus which stops outside the hotel or $20 each way for a taxi (classic car or yellow cab). Both great experiences. For future visitors and cat lovers, there are 2 lovely, friendly cats that live on the beach under the Fish restaurant. The same cats we met 4 and 5 years ago when we last visited. Need feeding and watering every day. Spare a scrap from your BBQ or a piece of ham from breakfast! One is very very old and has no teeth and need lots of water to drink from a clean cup. Tipping- we always tipped $1 for every drinks round and left a dollar on the table after meals. The Cubans need our tips and massively appreciate it Our only criticism this time was the change to the booking process for the Al-Carte restaurants. You used to be able to book a table but now its first come, first served and we didn't get to eat in the Mexican restaurant but did eat the the Pearl twice. The poor staff at the door take a lot flack from disappointed guests who cant get a table. Not their fault. Don't be put off by any bad reviews. Cuba is an amazing country and the Royalton is an amazing hotel. We cant wait to go back for a 4th time.
