What would you do with a hand-drawn treasure map? Would you search for the treasure? We found it: the map is the Hicacos Peninsula and the X is over Iberostar Laguna Azul. Just a few meters from Varadero beach, immersed in an immense tropical garden, this hotel has 6 outdoor pools that are as refreshing as they are spectacular. Your kids will pretend they’re pirates at Star Camp while you try a Caribbean cocktail or practice your favorite sport. If your body is ready for a lower heartbeat, you can bring it down with a complete massage in the spa, along with the hydrotherapy area. At night, after choosing your dish in the themed restaurants, you’ll find an atmosphere filled with humor, entertainment and music, thanks to the shows from our team. The true treasure of the Caribbean is here, along with your smile. *In order to improve your experience, until 04/30/24, we will be renovating some parts of the hotel (Partial renovation of the main pool). We are sorry for any inconvenience.

Iberostar Laguna Azul earns praise for its vibrant atmosphere, with fun beach parties and entertaining shows frequently highlighted by guests as creating a lively vacation vibe. The hotel's beach and variety of activities are popular, though some travelers report issues with room amenities and service inconsistencies. While the staff is often lauded for their friendliness, critiques arise over occasional slow service and staff shortages. The location wins hearts for its family-friendly environment, but some guests find the hotel's value lacking, pointing to overpriced services and food quality concerns. It may be the same at other resorts in Cuba, but I was disappointed in this resort.

I know toilet paper and laundry detergent is in short supply in Cuba, but I hoped by being on a resort funded by a Spanish company, I would not have to fight for toilet paper and fresh towels.

Food was what you would expect for Cuba, (poor).

The rooms were good but of the 3 we booked for our group, only 1 had a fully working air conditioner. One room had none at all. When I asked the manager I was told that the air conditioner problem was resort wide and that a repair person was working on it but nothing changed throughout our stay.

The safes had to be reset twice during our 5 night stay as they kept coming up with errors.

The shower head holders in all the rooms were broken making showers less enjoyable.

However, the beach was excellent. Lots of shade huts and lounge chairs. The entertainment on the beach and especially during the nightly shows was fantastic - amazingly corny and over the top as one would expect.

The bars were plentiful but only a couple of the tenders knew how to make a classic Margherita.

Overall, I was not impressed with this resort. It may have just been a case of bad timing with the towels, air conditioning and toilet paper but still, I was not impressed. If I wanted to live like the locals, i would have rented a house in Veradero or Havana and fought for toilet paper at the market.

We spent two weeks at this hotel recently. The weather was wonderful. Unfortunately, the hotel towel service seemed to be inadequate for the number of guests staying there. We used the same two blue beach towels for the entire trip as there were no towels available to exchange them. We ended up buying beach towels at the hotel gift shop towards the end of our stay. Same goes for the bath towels. We were only given two bath towels, no hand towels or facecloths at all. After the first few days when we realized they were not changing the towels, we went in person to the front desk to speak to them. The day after complaining at the front desk they changed our towels once. I think we had the same sheets for two weeks as well...which is not very good at all. The hotel had chipped and broken floor tiles in the stairways and room corridors. It is unfortunate about these issues as it is such a beautiful hotel on the surface. The food was very good and the staff were all friendly. We spoke with many other guests and the sheet and towels situation was a common complaint. Also, we often did not get the spare roll of toilet paper which is always nice to have, and the floors in our room never seemed to be swept thoroughly. Several of the cabinet drawers in the room were so hard to open that we couldn’t put anything in them. We will definitely not be going back. Joan A.

First things first, the people that write bad reviews are pretentious twits. This resort is wonderful. Our first time in Cuba, I couldn’t have asked for anything more. Our maid Yavet was lovely, we came back to beautifully made hearts and swans out of our towels, or blankets all the time.

Sunwing lost my luggage for almost 3 days and the staff at the Laguna Azul did there best to console my panic attacks. As soon as my luggage came the bell boy went out of his way to find my boyfriend or I at the resort to alert us that it finally came.

The food really truly isn’t that bad, and I am pretty picky. As long as you stick to freshly made grilled stuff at the buffet, you couldn’t go wrong. Though the buffet itself wasn’t terrible. The Japanese ala cart was wonderful & oh so delicious! Try the calamari, it was our fav! The Cuban ala cart was also absolutely amazing! Such great authentic Cuban food.

The beach was breathtaking, crystal clear blue water, white sand beaches, tiki huts and surprisingly comfortable loungers.

The staff were amazing, whether you tip or not ( however I encourage you to do so) yes it’s all inclusive but the resort staff survive off of tips mostly, pretty sure if you can afford a vacation you can spare a dollar for a drink, or your maid or the bell boy, or whom ever you can. If you can, try to bring with you shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, clothing, shoes whatever you can. I wish I had‘ve known how much was truly needed and how difficult it is for them to import the simplistic items we take for granted, it broke my heart.

In terms of excursions, I highly recommend the Jeep tour, so much bang for your buck & a hell of a time!

So, if you’re thinking about going to Cuba and you want the best resort, you’ve landed on it. Just remember it’s Cuba... it is what it is!

All in all it ended up being our favourite vacation & we will most definitely be back to the Iberostar Laguna Azul!!

Thanks to the amazing staff, ps make sure you try the pizza at the 24hr snack bar!!

Warmest,

Matt & Elise from Toronto!

We stayed at the Iberostar Laguna Azul in March 2020. We were pleased with the beach, pools and grounds but quite disappointed with the service in some areas and the poor quality and variety of food. The main buffet dining room offered a better variety than most other restaurants on site, yet the quality of many of the buffet dishes was not as good as we expected and have seen in other Varadero resorts with fewer stars that the Laguna Azul. The 24 hour snack bar offered little variety with only hot dogs, hamburgers and fries available, and limited bar options. During the day, the breakfast and lunch buffet at the Ranchon offered a very limited variety of poor quality. There are many birds in the Ranchon, many snacking on the open dishes in the buffet. Perhaps some plates with covers, like the ones used at lunch for the paella like dishes would address the problem. We needed to line up to get drinks from the bar at lunch, although there was serving staff available. The bar piscina La Ronda was the best in terms of staff attentiveness to customers and service. At the Ronda, the menu was quite limited the first days, and then some of the offerings (Chicken Milanesa and Tuna sandwich) were not available. We visited two a la carte restaurants and were pleased with the meal at the Criollo restaurant but did not enjoy the Japanese one. The show by the grill master was good, and we enjoyed the sushi and the tempura served as appetizer, as well as the rice and sauteed vegetables from the grill. However the meat option that day of squid, beef and pork was not enjoyable except for the pork. The beef was not tender, the squid heated and coated with salty brown bits. The staff was very attentive and kept the meal service going like clockwork. The facilities are in need of attention, from minor repairs and upkeep to the buildings to the elevators in the main building that were often out of service, and did not operate properly, i.e. doors closing quickly, not moving from the 3rd floor to the 1st, missing call and floor buttons. The housekeeping staff does what it can, with limited numbers of hand and bath towels, and limited restocking of toiletries and the drinks in the room fridge. The rooms are well cleaned daily. Key cards to access the rooms did not always work, requiring a 5 minute trek to the reception to resolve, or the assistance of the housekeeper if nearby. This is not the quality we expect at the 5 star property and overall we feel it was poor value for the money. We do not plan to return to this resort.

Dear guest, Thank you for your feedback on your stay at our beachfront resort Iberostar Laguna Azul. We regret to hear you found some elements of our hotel a little outdated. This Hotel has changed from when I was last here ,4 years ago, for the worst. Here are the upsets:

1. Check in time is 4pm ( way too late)
2. Picture frames and furniture crooked or broken in rooms. Rooms cheaply painted
3. Bed sheets never changed
4. No fresh beach towels ..therefore had same beach towel all week.
5. Hot water unreliable
6. 3/5 days they gave us bottled water that was replaced with Tap water in the mini fridge.
7. Flies in abundance in Lobby, coffee bar, and buffet
8. Fowl smell in buffet(very nauseating), flies, wild cats dogs and birds coming and going in buffet, the food is improperly handled.
9. Was sick for most of the vacation due to unsanitary condition of food in buffet.. A la carte restaurants were a joke.
10. A few staff were really rude and be prepared to hear -NO -a lot or we don’t have.
11. Mold around the air vents and floor boards...Black mold actually..Many people were coughing.
12. Ice is not purified and had a smell to it.
13. Improper refrigeration of food in buffet. Meat and cheeses left out in 30 degree weather...smell was putrid.
14. Toilet bowl broken in room for 2 days and had to use washroom in hotel lobby... feces smeared on bathroom stall wall due to no toilet paper.

The following was enjoyable:

1. The beach
2. The beach
3. The beach

Thanks

Just returned from Iberostar Laguna Azul. Worst all inclusive hotel I have ever stayed at. Reserved through Air Transat. Issues encountered by us and most guests we talked to:
No hot water for 2 1/2 days
no TV for 2 days
Almost all elevators were non functional. Our room was on 5th floor
Our Air conditioner in room made noise like a buldozer
Red and white wine tasted watered down
Vodka and gin for mixes were watered down. We proved it by ordering straight up shots that came from different bottles than ones used for mixed drinks.
Coffee was so weak we had to order Cafe Americano at lobby bar but line up in morning took 15 -20 minutes. Ordered double cups to avoid add. waits
Buffet food low quality
About 50% of sofas ( about 50 out of 100) in lobby no longer have seat cushions
The place is understaffed and the staff was mostly rude and unconcerned with tourists
At sit down resto (Japanese) had to ask to be served wine 5 times to be told to be patient. Finally got some wine half way through the main course
Ordered Mahi Mahi at Italian theme resto but was served Tilapia. This is a garbage fish. Menu is a lie.Waited 20 minutes for alternative meal
Lobby and buffet seating areas extremely noisy. Hard to have a normal conversation
They do not serve coffee with desserts at specialty restos. Get in and out ASAP
Bro-in-law ordered shrimp meal to receive tiny shrimps on rice bed that were not peeled. Had to order alt meal
No facecloths or tissues in room
Showerhead holder broken. Had to hold wand with hand
Met guests that had pictures of cockroaches in room
Same guests had a picture of 3 foot snake outside of their room.
Would not go back even if it was free.
Overall this is a 1 or 2 star.

Very disappointing hotel in all aspects. Stayed for a week after Christmas and during NYE.
Room was very worn out and bathroom was the worst. Toilet paper holder was broken and dirty walls from squashed bugs upon arrival. Shower curtain didn’t cover the tub properly and water would leak onto bathroom the floor flooding it and there would be no towels to wipe/ mop it up. Beds were decent but I had to beg for towels and toilet paper, and oftentimes wouldn’t be given any extra towels ‘cause there were none! Phone didn’t work and despite me telling reception nothing was done. TV also didn’t work. Two massive cockroaches were found in the room upon return on two occasions. Not sure how they got inside but it was disgusting as they were huge.
Beach was great and found decent snorkelling off shore. Lots of cigarette butts on sand though and didn’t see the sand raked. Was able to only exchange the beach towel once during my week stay as they kept saying there were none as they were sent to the offsite laundry. Trying to find Lounge chairs was a struggle and many of them were broken.
Food was the worst I have experienced. We all got sick with an upset stomach and I wonder why- most likely because of the unsanitary conditions. Buffet was like a zoo and it would take forever to get a drink from the overworked waiters. The food was bland/repetitive and desserts were horrible. I tried to book an a la carte but was told they were completely booked up after few nights of arrival.
Wifi was rip off and I would always get kicked off.
I’ve been to many all inclusive resorts and this was my second time in Cuba. By far the worst experience. I usually try not to complain but wrote this review as feel people should know the reality of this place. Other than the beautiful beach the resort is run down, poorly managed and unsanitary.

Dear Karen We appreciate the time you have taken to share your thoughts regarding your recent stay at our 5* all inclusive Iberostar Laguna Azul resort which boasts a spa with beauty salon and a fully equipped fitness room. We would like, first of all, to express our disappointment that you experienced some maintenance issues during your stay, it is atypical in our hotels as our professional maintenance team are always happy to repair any discrepancies rapidly. We are so sorry if this was not the case for you on your visit. We would also like to reassure you that our rooms, including bed linen and towels, are cleaned daily and our staff follow a strict cleaning and disinfecting regime of all areas of the hotels and facilities. Furthermore, we are sorry to hear that our buffet dining was not entirely to your liking. With a passion for gastronomy being such an important facet of our company, our talented team of professional chefs prepare a wide variety of both local and international cuisine using the highest quality ingredients available and also regularly rotate our menus. We really are sorry that on this occasion we were not able to fulfil your expectations. We thank you for providing your observations, we will, of course, share them with our chefs as they greatly appreciate any possibility to offer more to our guests. We hope you enjoyed the breathtaking views and the crystal clear caribbean waters of Varadero and that you had a safe journey home. Best Regards, Quality Manager Iberostar Laguna Azul

I have never written a review before but felt this one was necessary. Sad to say we stayed here several years ago and it was wonderful this is why we chose to go back.
This time was and will be my last. Resort is getting run down my room could have used a fresh coat of paint! The a la carte restaurants- we felt very rushed you barely had time to sit and pick up your menu and they were asking what you wanted to order! Each one had run out of one of the items on the menu! Then when we did get our food it was cold! If I had to pick I would say the Japanese was the best cause they cook right I front of you however I like all my food served at once! Beach is absolutely beautiful but better hang on to that beach towel cause it’s the only one you get for the week !!!! Wth?? Also every second lounge chair was broken.
Why do they still allow smoking inside!!! We found it difficult to sit and enjoy a drink in the lounge due to the cigarette and cigar smoke! housekeeping was ok however some of us didn’t get clean towels they just folded up our dirty ones for re-use and the bed linen was never changed during the week.
I know you get what you pay for but honestly this was my worst all inclusive vacation ever.
Very disappointed ☹️

Dear Karen, We appreciate the time you have taken to share your thoughts regarding your recent stay at our all inclusive Iberostar Laguna Azul resort which boasts four restaurants and eight bars. We regret that not all of our gastronomic selection was to your liking. The standard of our cuisine is very important to us at Iberostar. Our goal is to constantly surpass ourselves, continually introducing new ideas and concepts to our gastronomy. On this occasion, we regret that we did not completely satisfy you. Constructive criticism is always welcomed to help us in our quest for perfection, therefore we will be discussing all the concerns with the relevant departments. We hope you enjoyed the breathtaking views and that you had a safe journey home. Best Regards, Quality Manager Iberostar Laguna Azul

Stayed in February 2020. Resort was great for the price. We stayed in the Relax Suites, so private Breakfast & Lunch with no kids. Beach is amazing (just get a chair early!). Lots of pools to choose from (it’s a big resort!) - can’t go wrong! Rooms could use some updating, but otherwise clean. We did not get clean towels daily unless we asked, but it’s not a 5 star resort and using the same towel two days in a row doesn’t bother us. One of us couples had to ask to get bottles water put in their rooms daily but again, it wasn’t hard to ask and they did they received (we got our fridge restocked daily). Buffet food was buffet food.. you don’t go to Cuba for the food though. A La Carte Restaurants were much better than the buffet. 5 Peso’s takes you on the bus to Varadero though - we did that 2/3 of our buffet dinner nights and was a fabulous choice! For the price, you really shouldn’t complain. The staff we interacted with always went above and beyond, the customer service was always fantastic!
