Hotel Roc Barlovento receives commendation for its cleanliness, with especially well-maintained pools and rooms, though some suggest the beach could be better kept. Guests enjoy the value it provides, despite occasional food and amenities concerns. While the rooms get mixed reactions due to some maintenance issues, the vibrant atmosphere, complete with music and a bustling lobby, is a highlight for many, even if a few find it overly loud. The friendly service is a plus, as is the hotel's prime location, which offers easy access to local attractions. However, the amenities sometimes fall short, with reports of shortages and maintenance problems.

We travel 3 to 4 times a year, between September and March. We have been to this hotel several times over the past year (Sept. and Nov. 2022, Feb. and March 2023). We were there from Sep 28 to Oct 5.23. It's too hot for us, my husband spent 2 days in the room with an intolerance to the sun. In the future, it will not be before the end of October. We had a very nice room with air conditioning that works well (very important for us) shower, TV, mini fridge, never lack of hot/cold water, bath towel, hair dryer. The maid is great and does a very good job. The choices for lunch, dinner, dinner are better during the high season (like everywhere in CUBA) but we always have good meals. The beach is beautiful (no seaweed) never lacking in chairs and/or palapasse. The new owners are doing a lot of renovations to improve the Hotel. For example, in the entrance hall, all the tables and chairs are new and non-smoking. Smokers are now limited to 3 tables only, perfect for us as we are non-smokers.
All employees in the different sections, buffet, à la carte restaurant, beach, bars, reception etc. are generally kind, polite, courteous and do everything they can to make your visit, your vacation pleasant. What is deplorable and unpleasant are these tourists who lack the skills to live on planes and hotels. Sometimes also the locals who stay at the hotel and who think they are doing everything we witnessed (in the dining room).
In conclusion, this Roc Barlovento hotel is very well located, close to several restaurants, flea market and others and can be reached on foot or by taxi.

On our fifteenth trip to Cuba, we opted for the Roc Barlovento because it is an "Adults Only" and because reviews here and there suggested it was a quiet hotel. My partner and I appreciate this type of place allowing us to go to bed early and get up early. We stayed at this location from August 29th to September 5th.

Arriving at the end of the evening, we noticed that the room assigned to us overlooked the swimming pool and that a group of partygoers present in the swimming pool were screaming and singing. We went to reception to request a room change but were told we would have to wait until the next morning. The disturbance stopped at 3 a.m., despite being told in the lobby that security would be sent. The next morning we return to reception to request a room change. We are told that we will have to come back at 2 p.m. We returned at the appointed time only to be told that there was no possibility of changing rooms, although the hotel was far from full. So we decided to go with it, telling ourselves that we were being made fun of but at the same time that we bitterly regretted having chosen this hotel. In fairness, the other 6 nights saw the noise stop at 11am and we had to wait until that time to be able to sleep.

Our room, although dated, was very clean and well maintained by our housekeeper. The bed was comfortable and the air conditioning worked very well. The shower was not optimal with a thin trickle of water and we had no hot water for two days in a row.

The configuration of the hotel allows you to be close to everything, which is a great advantage.

The buffet was ordinary, repetitive and lacking as is often the case in Cuba but we always found something to eat. A word for the coffee at lunch, really very good! The service at the buffet was very uneven. We went to the a la carte restaurants twice, the first Cuban and the second Mexican. In both cases it was good but the service was ordinary in the second.

No difficulty finding chairs and shade at the beach (still magnificent) and it was relatively easy to find shade at one of the two swimming pools on site, very well maintained swimming pools.

The late night shows were generally good.

The wifi is very good. We are given 9 hours to arrive and it is possible to resupply if necessary. However, once you have checked out, your access is withdrawn even if you have internet time left and even if you leave at the end of the day.

In short, a decent stay overall but the intense noise means we will never go back there again!

Very satisfied with their stay at the Hotel Roc Barlavento. Were from August 10 for 12 days, 2024. THE REVIEWS BELOW ARE NONSENSE. Those who write bad reviews didn't know where they were going in the first place. They go to Cuba for color and ocean first. Not for food, if it is important to you - you to Turkey and other countries with plenty .
About the hotel: well-kept area, woke up early and daily saw cleaning of the area and pools early, timely cleaning of the room, always left tips and gifts. The attitude of the staff is also great, checked into a nice room overlooking the ocean. Animator Lebanon is a very good and kind man. Pays a lot of attention to guests, a good conversationalist and will always help with any question. Thank him so much again for everything!
Russian guests are treated well, both by the staff and by guests from other countries, behave appropriately and there will be no problems!
They pour all the rum you want, make delicious cocktails.
Christophier's gardener is also a good man, cleaning and giving us coconuts.
In general, if you initially know where you're going - vacation will only be high with positive emotions. Bring gifts to the Cubans, they will be very grateful to you. (read more about this online)

The picture about says it all. The first room they gave us when we checked in was in rough shape. Alot of cockroaches, roof sagging in the bathroom, smell of sewage. Light fixtures falling off the walls. The sheets and pillow covers had blood and black stains on them. We asked if they could change them and they eventually did send housekeeping to change our bedding. We asked for a different room and the second day they moved us to a slightly better room but it was also pretty rough. The locals burn garbage at night so there is an awful thick smoke that engulfs the resort during the night making it hard to sleep and burns the sinuses. Food is awful to the point we ate off the resort every evening. No hot water on the resort anywhere. The beaches are full of garbage. There are cats everywhere. And not just one or two of them, like hundreds of cats. They are on the tables while you eat, in the restaurants and nobody seems to do anything about them. One pool is drained and out of order. Railing on the steps and upper floors falling apart. I mean I could go on and on but you can get the idea. Would not recommend this place, not even if it was free.

For an older resort near downtown Varadero Varadero, the 3 1/2 star Roc is an
excellent Choice .
The staff is what makes this resort extremely awesome and the real reason
the Roc B has so many repeat returning customers . Rooms are well cleaned , courteous/helpful desk staff , awesome staff in bars and buffet area.
The grounds are well maintained and the pool man does an excellent job maintain the polo
Entertainment is top notch and they offer a good variety of games , activities and performances .

I miss the aquatics show , it was no longer happening at the Roc B last week

Sad to see the Cat Cafe has been removed .
Sad that the entertainment staff ( Animation) are no longer fed nor welcome in the dining rooms for it was a pleasure to be greeted by them and our sit with them and
chat over a meal .

Food is perhaps an issue ( redundancy of same food ever day ) but really not a reason to not come to Cuba as you will not go hungry.

Cuba day ( Friday) meals were better than normal and
thinking outside the box… maybe by having more Theme day like ( Canada Day, German day, Italian day, Mexican day ) could see addition/alternate food offerings respectively on such days like papa frites or poutine, Sausage on a bun , Spaghetti night with garlic bread , Fajitas , etc, etc .

In the main buffet it would be better to ensure that the best people for the
specific stations are chosen!
For example … Ernesto knows how to make great pizza and the way he does pasta meals is entertaining as well as delicious . Ensure others are trained to do the same if the are manning this food station or other food stations

A La Carte restaurants had better meals

I believe the management of the Roc needs to find some value adds ( perhaps internet till departure to airport on bus for a starter) that will ensure clients continue
to return rather to the Roc B rather than consider trying similar star rated and priced resorts like the Kwarma near by ..

Thinking outside the box will ensure this resort remains the choice for returning customers and word of mouth will add more clients meaning more revenue for the resort, more tips for the staff and a continue resort of choice for many years to come

Presently I have been coming here for at least the past 10 years except when closed during CoVid and I hope the resort new management will improve things that can be improved and that thinking “ It’s Good Enough “ changes to “How can we make the Roc B better”

I didn't expect service at the level of Egypt or Turkey...
We vacationed in Cuba for 12 nights.
We flew as a group of 4 people (2 married couples) to the Roc Barlovento hotel on April 15th. Our tour cost 232 thousand rubles for two.
Upon arrival, we were fed pasta because we didn’t have time for dinner. The accommodation was in neighboring rooms and the rooms were not the worst at first glance.
From the first day we did not have hot water, we went to the reception, to which they told us “tomorrow” - that is, tomorrow. We had even come to terms with the lack of hot water, although we sometimes reminded the staff that we would like hot water to appear. We lived like this for 4 days, after which sleepless, noisy nights began. Our windows overlooked the neighboring villa/house, where Cubans were relaxing listening to loud music and singing karaoke songs very loudly. We couldn't sleep, and this all lasted until 4 in the morning. After 2 such nights, we contacted the reception again, to which they again said “tomorrow”.
After 6 days spent in these rooms, we still deigned to change rooms. Move to another building. The rooms were better and newer, the furniture was fresh, the ocean view. We were incredibly happy, but unfortunately our room was attacked on the same day by a huge army of ants, we again contacted the reception, again their answer was “tomorrow”, I had to sleep the night in the room knowing that ants were living with us in 10 square meters. For friends, the situation turned out to be different; large cockroaches came to visit them.
The next day, I asked that we be returned to a room without hot water and with noisy neighbors, we were returned to the same room from which we moved out.
Next, regarding food... They cannot fry meat properly. I always returned the meat so that it could be finished cooking. There is no sweets, there is ice cream and their jam, in which some living creature periodically dies, they pull it out and leave it further for consumption. There is no abundance of fruits, pineapple, guava, papaya, watermelon, but not yet ripe, because the season has not come. For breakfast there was always scrambled eggs of different types, and just boiled and poached eggs. Buns and bread are provided only for breakfast, lunch and dinner without bread. They cook a lot of rice and pasta. The alcohol was white rum, powdered pinocalada, white wine appeared 3 times in 12 days, and then only for dinner. The coffee periodically ran out, they only had soda, and then either Coke would run out, or Sprite. Their cocktails are Pina Colada, Cubalibra, and Blue Lagoon. There always seemed to be beer.
For breakfast one day, scrambled eggs were cooked with a COCKROACH. The staff offered to replace the dish.
The staff will not move until they receive the money. They can stand on the bar at four and not notice you. Another thing that surprised me was the collection of used disposable cups on the hotel premises and their washing and reuse. The dishes in the dining room are always dirty, both plates and cutlery.
Cuba is beautiful, the Atlantic ocean is fabulous. But the hotel upset us.

We returned last Thursday from an excellent 2 week vacation at the Roc Barlovento, Varadero. The beach is stunning and the water so clear most days that we could swim laps in the sea. The staff were so warm and hospitable and so gracious. We do not eat meat although we do eat fish and seafood and we were surprised by the variety of the selection at meal times. We did bring our own hot sauces to spice things up, but everything that we tried was so delicious and so fresh. And what a treat having grilled lobster tails a few times at the Fusion restaurant. It was my birthday while we were there and what a surprise to return to our room after a day on the beach to discover that the maid had decorated the room and had left another bottle of rum. I loved that there were lots of cats and was so happy that we had brought lots of cat food to share with the Roc Barlovento cats. If you are a cat lover I suggest doing the same and you will make the feline population so happy. We enjoyed a private tour to Havana with another couple and would highly recommend doing so if you can do so on a cooler day as we did. Our one suggestion is to turn down the music that plays all day outside by one of the pools and is cranked to decimal levels that can really hurt your ears for the evening shows. We chose the resort for peace and quiet and to hear the waves of the ocean. There were some renovations in progress and when it is finished it will look even better than it does now. I wish to thank the team of hard workers that went the extra step to make our first warm weather vacation since the pandemic began so very enjoyable. Muchas gracias! We hope to return next winter and have already recommended the roc Barlovento to friends and family.

Resort location to the beach is good, people are friendly, buildings were run down, many problems, there for 7 days had to switch rooms a few times, either air conditioning, or water problem, no hot water, water shut off often, rooms flooding, or bad smell, beds not confotable, cockroaches. Food was very bland and same meals served every day, mad it very boring, for bei g by the beach offered no sea food, no eggs, and rooms were not stocked daily with simple supplies like toilet paper and water ect.

They play spanish music loud in the main pool area very loudly, making sleeping in nearly imposible. Entertainment was very repetitive with same dancers and entertainers every night.

Access to the beach was top notch, beautiful clean shore line.

Only giving 2 stars as this resort needs a lot of updating, and more variety for price that was paid.

We had the best experience in March earlier this year for a 2 week stay and just returned tonight from another 2 week stay. The ocean, beach, staff and cats are amazing but the food and beverage and room offerings have gone downhill and we respect that there are food shortages and electric outages all over Cuba and we believe that Sunwing needs to take responsibility to inform potentiall paying guests in advance of the situation. For almost 2 weeks, no greens of any sort and no fish other than sometimes canned tuna in our 2nd week.. Not even chickpeas or lentils other than our first day and no wine offered other than our first 1 or 2 days. By the time that we left if you wanted a beverage with any alcoholic content it was limited to cheap rum and vodka, (not the good stuff...), and beer. (People at other Varadero resorts that were on our flight back said that they had everything.) In March we could have tequila and gin and good quality rum and other libations that were of much better quality and also wine with our meals. And very little protein ever offered if you do not eat any meat and we heard from carnivores that the meat was of the lowest quality and they could not chew it or swallow it. This hotel has so much potential and the staff and the beach are amazing and so are all the resort cats. Please bring down seafood cat food for them as you can not bring anything meat based to Cuba. We understand they used to have a real cat cafe. What a great idea that would be to repeat for both the cats and the guests instead of all the cats so desperate for food and care and affecation and set up something. We brought down 2 kilos of cat food and also many bags of treats that were gone within our first week. When we asked staff where we could buy cat food in Varadero we were told that one could not. So all the many resort cats are dependant on handouts from guests for scraps or that they bring down. And please leave fresh water for them too! We were very, very disappointed by the quality of the place compared to March this year and understand the hardships, but there is also a lot of corruption and things going on behind closed doors. One night when we were waiting for family/friends to arrive late night after a delayed flight we witnessed a couple of bartenders leaving their shift with bottles clinking in the bags that we were leaving with in their street clothes in cloth Dollarma bags that were probaby given to them from CDNS for example...My accolades to all the hard working staff who tried their best under their cirmcumstances and challenges facing Cuba and the world and I would sincerely like to offer a more positive review for our second stay. The sun, the sea and the smiles are like no other and although the Roc Barlovento needs a major overhaul it grows on you. Hoping that they can improve the experience that Sunwing promotes.
