This was my first trip to Cuba with my partner, Ramon, who was born in Camaguey. We stayed in the Hotel E. Santa Maria and it was a wonderful hotel. I wasn't sure what to expect with this being my first trip, but the hotel room and especially the maid was wonderful. Unfortunately we traveled during the COVID situation, so the city had closed some of the restaurants, but I enjoyed a wonderful breakfast (complimentary) and my coffee each morning outside on one of the numerous patios.
The hotel is an old building in the centre of town however the room was basic with a very large updated bathroom and a large single bed. There was no window in the room since it was not on an outside wall however some other members of our group said that at least I did not have to put up with all the noise they experienced during the night. There was only one very thin pillow and the towels had worn very thin. The lift which apparently only serviced the third floor was not working so we most inconveniently had to go to the fourth floor in a different lift and indirectly walk some distance before going down stairs with luggage before walking further to the room. It was very confusing and several of us on the third floor kept getting lost. The restaurant was on the top floor and the lift would not always go to that level. Both dinner and breakfast were poor.…
We were proposed a nice room with a double bed but preferred two single beds... the room we were given was rather humid (not smelling good) and also quite dirty. Great view from top floor breakfast spot, but rather bad breakfast as well.
In common with all of the hotels we stayed in on this trip the E Santa Maria is government-owned and operated. We had a large room looking onto the courtyard. Others in our tour had rooms fronting on the street, which they said was very loud. The bed was good, but the furniture was rather scruffy, the paint job was sloppy, and the water pressure was very bad. That said, the maid service was outstanding. Probably the best thing about this hotel is that it is centrally located, in the middle of a long pedestrian mall.
Great location situated on the corner of the pedestrian street. Convenient and safe to walk around at night nearby. Reception staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was dated but the bed was very comfortable and the air conditioning worked well. We looked onto the pedestrian street so we did have some street noise and the Church bells on the opposite corner rang very loudly at 6.30am! The bathroom was very spacious - the shower was over the bath and although there was a handrail it was very awkward to get out of the bath without slipping - this seemed to be a common problem at the majority of our hotels in Cuba. Breakfast was basic European type with an omelet/egg station at the small roof top restaurant. Wifi cost was 1cuc/hour and worked in our room. Overall it was a good place to stay for our one night in Camaguey. …
This was just for an overnight stay while I left for Cayo Coco the next morning. The staff is all very welcoming, the bar although quite small has a very large selection of drinks, from bear to cuban coffee to wine and lets not forget the famous Havana Club rum. you can't leave Cuba without having some. Breakfast is included in the price of the room. the restaurant is located just across the street and the food is good for Cuban standards. there are lots of churches to see, 1 right across the street is 500 years old and still has the original front door. there's lots of history in every town that you visit in Cuba, I recommend this Hotel to everyone. It is centrally located in the heart of Camagüey. Just 10 min ride from the airport. and the taxi ride is usually 15.00 CUC
Camagüey is one of Cuba’s most interesting places to visit, and the Hotel Santa Maria is possibly the best place to stay there. Very close to other hotels and B&Bs, this facility stands out for different reasons like location, building characteristics and customer service. Right on the square of La Soledad, also known to locals as Plaza del Gallo, Hotel Santa Maria is close to mostly all tourist attractions in town, so you can walk to different places without the need to take any means of transportation. The view of the city from the street-facing rooms and from the lookout point on the roof is fantastic. The rooms are spacious, well-furnished and equipped. Our wall air conditioner worked perfectly well in such a hot September tropical weather, and we had hot water 24/7 during our two-night stay. The Hotel lobby is spacious and beautifully lit by the sunlight coming through its tall windows, and all common areas are comfortable and nicely decorated. But the Hotel Santa Maria’s best asset is its people: receptionists, housekeepers, waiters and waitresses and bar tenders all know their craft to perfection and provide exceptionally good customer service. They are all part of an evidently very well-trained professional team, with an honest heart to serve, that made our hotel experience simply unforgettable.…
We were supposed to be staying in the E El Marquis, but when we arrived we were told that there was no electricity in the hotel and they were moving all guests to one of their other hotels. We were a litlle skeptical, but we were taken to the Hotel E Santa Maria and welcomed by the Manager, who apologised and gave us two room even though we had only booked one room for four people (two adults, two kids). The rooms were big and had good aircon. Beds were comfortable and the rooms were clean. Breakfast is at the top, where there are good views over the city. It was a basic breakfast (fruit, bread / toast, eggs, ham, cheese, etc.) but was fresh and nice. They were very helpful throughout our stay and I would recommend this hotel.
My family and I stayed one night in Hotel Santa Maria and we were very pleased. The room was very spacious and the location is perfect. The hotel was clean and elegant. The staff was incredible. The manager Loraine was very helpful. She arranged our taxi ride to Cayo Guillermo, and even offered us with some tips on the city. We will definately stay again in this hotel. The roof top terrace restaurant was very delicious and breakfast was included with our stay. A huge thank you to Loraine and her team for making us feel so welcomed.
While the rooms were not available when we arrived, the hotel was happy to organize a lunch spot for us. This was preceded by a few espressos and cigars in the lobby and courtyard bars. The super tall ceilings and open windows and doors between the various courtyards had the charming benefit of allowing house martins to nest on the tops of the columns in the lobby. The staff were excellent and accommodating, a recommended stay for anyone visiting this great old city.
