This was the second hotel on the Saga Viva Cuba tour where the solo travellers were put in different and inferior rooms from the rest of the group. Despite paying a sizeable single supplement Saga seem to think it acceptable to put a woman travelling alone in a room like a cell without a window.

We were on a group tour and stayed there twice during the tour. Both times we had a largish room on the first floor at the front of the hotel, whereas everyone else complained about being in tiny rooms. The downside, though, was that there was an assembly of locals on the street outside chatting until about 3 in the morning. The food was fine and service normally good. The location of the hotel is also good, so you can stroll down the road to the town centre and there are plenty of bars etc in the area.

I am surprised to read as many good reviews of this hotel as bad. We stayed at this hotel on a group tour and found it to be the worst hotel we stayed at in our tour of Cuba. The foyer and bar in the entrance are very nice indeed and full of character but our room fell far short of acceptable. We were aware that the rooms in this hotel can be small but the room we were allocated on the first floor was unacceptably small for two adults with insufficient room to open two suitcases. There was no bedside light and a failed bulb in the ceiling light. The air conditioning did not work and the room was unbearably dark and hot being over 30 degrees. Our guide informed us that this room should not have been allocated and had already been found to be unacceptable on a previous tour. We were then shown to a room on the ground floor. This was a similar room with marginally more light and space between the beds and as the air conditioning appeared to be working, albeit noisily, we accepted the room and began to spread our things on the beds, (there being nowhere else), knowing there would be a problem when we needed to get in them. We later found the toilet handle was broken and it would therefore not flush, bu as it was by now getting late, resigned ourselves to the fact that we were only there for one night. The bathroom vent opened to the outside of the hotel where a horn sounded on and off all night long, followed by the crowing of a rooster from about 4 am. The room faced the courtyard and the hotel staff commenced preparing the breakfast very early indeed , not only making considerable noise with dishes etc, but talking very loudly and inconsiderately. Our meals were somewhat indifferent with numerous flies on the buffet food, particularly at breakfast. A small croissant was apparently fried and to my pallet was completely inedible. On our return journey and second stop at this hotel we were unhappy to find we had been allocated the same room. A generous single member of our party offered to swap rooms with us as they had previously had a larger room with a double bed. One questions why such a small room would be given to two people,. Another single member of the party had three beds so it would seem that little thought had been given to the room allocation. The room we stayed in on our return was therefore larger with a refurbished shower and was very much better. However it had a window over the door so the room was illuminated at night from the light in the corridor outside. It had a locked door to an adjoining room which again had a double window over it meaning that when someone next door got up during the night and put the light on, our room was fully illuminated too! The courtyard of this hotel is very nice and it is a pity that the rooms and food at this hotel let it down as it could be an atmospheric place to stay. We will never return and would be hard placed to recommend it to anyone, especially if you are looking for a nights rest.

Dear KatyHertfordshire It is a pity that we could not give him the rest he wanted. His comments were already analyzed with those involved and the necessary measures were taken so that they were not repeated and the strict analysis with those responsible was also carried out. I would like to explain that our rooms are small, but at the time of your stay we have no reports of guides or clients. We have already analyzed the inconvenience of maintenance with the waitress and the supervisor of her room, even when we do not have the reports of these in our customer feedback system. Once again we apologize and hopefully allow us to have your visit in the future so that we can totally change such a bad impression. Greetings from Hotel Colón by Meliá

I just visited this beautiful hotel with a group of friends, we had a great experience. The service was excellent as well as the dinner and breakfast, there was a good variety of dishes. The rooms need some renovations but they are very clean as well as the rest of the areas of the hotel. We certainly enjoyed our stay. We hope we can come back. Thank you very much to all the staff
