Detailed Reviews
We booked to stay 2 nights and I wish we had stayed longer. This is a beautiful modern hotel.
The room was smart with a side view of the Malecon. It was spotless and the air-conditioning worked perfectly. The bed was very comfortable.
We were on the 19th floor and heard no noise overnight.
Toiletries, robes and slippers were provided
Breakfast on both mornings was in the 3rd floor buffet and was plentiful and good quality, the staff were very attentive.
We loved the pool area on the 3rd floor, it was so cooling after spending hours exploring the city and amazing to look out on to the Malecon.
We had a few minor glitches: it took a few attempts to get pillows sent to the room and we were overcharged for coffee at the pool. After some confusion this was rectified, possibly extra training needed for the young staff.

The hotel location can’t be beat. It is very modern and has beautifully appointed modern rooms. Some have great views of the water. I particularly loved the central courtyard like area with the plants, open spaces, and views of the water. The staff are very helpful and gracious and try their very best, especially the ones who speak English, to make their international guests comfortable and welcome. Training is still a work in progress and housekeeping can be of variable quality. A special shout out to Daeshel who always welcomed us with a smile and helped us problem solve. The hotel was an oasis to return to after a day of exploration.

The location is perfect, the hotel is practically brand new which means almost everything works. The pool area is fabulous. And I had a beautiful massage there for one hour. For an additional fee, you can purchase a View room which overlooks the sea and Melacon. The only complication? Is payment. But this is the case in every hotel in Cuba. So the rules were put in place by the government not the Hotel. So here’s a word of advice, open up a line of credit on your room or purchase a Cuban credit card at the kiosk window in the lobby. It will make your life so much easier. And make for a great day! Don’t forget the tips of staff!

Overall, the hotel is beautiful and overlooks the Malecon. Our breakfast was included with our group, and it was good overall. Great coffee!! The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The rooms are spacious, spotless, and comfortable.
Someone mentioned earlier that it is not for U.S. citizens. We were there on a U.S. educational trip, and we could not pay for a meal or a drink in this hotel. They don't accept U.S. cash (though most places do), and after being told that Cuba does not accept credit cards, the pool area and restaurant accept only credit cards. However, to use a regular Visa or Mastercard, etc., the transaction goes through Spain and then your U.S. bank will get notified of a questionable transaction. We declined that deal because the last thing I needed was for my Visa to be shut down.
The shower was a fiasco. The DUMBEST shower design I've ever seen. The drain isn't much of a drain. It's a metal plate. This is topped off with a shower floor that is flush with the rest of the room, and is not pitched towards the drain at all. With each shower, the water ran out all over the floor in our room!!!! The staff gave us extra towels and mats to seal the bottom of the shower door, with little effect. So all that scummy shower water was covering the floor in our room. If you want to use the hairdryer, you run the risk of electrocution if you're standing in a puddle of water.
My roommate struggled with Internet connection, which kept going in and out, but I've heard from native Cubans that this is Island-wide and not singular to the hotel.
There is a great little restaurant on the same road just a few doors down called 'Casa Mia'. It's pretty inexpensive, has great food, AND they take U.S. dollars!

This hotel is new enough that it does not appear on the US blacklist, so at the moment, US citizens can stay here even though it is 51% owned by the Cuban government. The other 49% is owned by an Indonesian group which is shown by subtle hints like the names of the meeting rooms. It has many good features, clean and modern nicely sized rooms. The front desk and engineering staff are generally very helpful.
There are a number of bad features, some of which come down to bad design. The shower has a flat floor and water tends to run out under the door if you use the handheld nozzle. The shower could also use grab bars for safety.
The electrical system is poorly designed also. One master switch controls all of the lights in the room, and the light in the entryway has no separate switch. This means that the master needs to be off to get the room dark so getting up in the middle of the night is in total darkness unless you want to wake up your spouse and turn on the lights.
Although it is somewhat understandable, the HVAC has no heating capability, only cooling. We arrived during a winter cold snap and when we got to our room, the AC was blasting and the temp was 60F in the room. Turning the control to 22C has no effect. You need to call the front desk for instructions on turning off the AC since the control panel is obscure. Then we opened the window because it was slightly warmer outside. Luckily they do have blankets.
Another room problem is the windows. They are not well sealed and the wind whistles like crazy. One of our party had a corner room with a great view, but she could hardly sleep for the whistling.
The breakfast is large, but low quality. Cuba has such a dire food situation that it is a shame that such a large quantity of food is poorly prepared. Chicken and pork are tough and overcooked. There are fresh omelets, but often the ingredient selection is lacking. There is a European-style breakfast section with cheese and cold cuts, and seasonal fruit. The toaster needs two passes to get the toast done. Good luck with finding someone to fill your coffee cup before you finish eating. The same staff will be in the bars in the afternoon, you need almost as much luck to get a drink or the check.
There are several small privately owned restaurants within a short walk, where you can get better food and service.

Dear guest, We greatly appreciate your opinion about our services, you can be sure that your suggestions will be taken into consideration in order to improve our level of guest satisfaction, which is our main mission. However, there are several points mentioned that must be clarified in order to avoid misunderstandings and providing erroneous information. We do not know where you obtained the information that we share the property with the government since our company is only responsible for the operation, management and promotion of the hotel globally. Your theory of how the hotel is structured is very interesting, but wrong. In the room there are two master switches, one is located at the main entrance and the other next to your bed, as is world hotel standard. We regret that you do not share the same opinion as the majority of our clients about our breakfast service and the quality of the food served. We will also share your comments with our staff who offer their best effort every day. Thank you and we hope to have the pleasure of serving you again. Robert Vargas, General Manager

I really wanted to love this hotel. It is a beautiful new hotel located on the Malecon with gorgeous sunset views. Rooms are spacious with modern art and there is free wifi but you have to log in every time which became frustrating. Breakfast offers a nice selection although some pastries tasted stale. There is a nice pool and gym as well so all the amenities are there but the service is inconsistent and the rooms have issues. The curtain rods do not work so you have to drag them together to block the sunlight, the safes don’t work, blankets are missing, towel sets are incomplete, etc. In addition, because of the US sanctions, purchasing items in the hotel can be challenging as you need to either purchase a Cuban card or a hotel card to do so. Rooms were also very chilly at 17 degrees C (61 F) and I had several tech people come and adjust the thermostats without success. The only thing that worked was to simply turn the air conditioning off.
The bathrooms in the lobby area did not have soap for several days so I had to repeatedly ask for the maid and Guest Services to refill the soap dispensers which was done the last day I was there.
Because I was there with a tour group, we were there twice for a total of 8 nights. With the first room, I noticed that there were brown spots under the mattress and box springs. The shower worked the first night but on the second night, the water flowed into the sink and bathroom areas, making it very slippery and dangerous. The tech guy came quickly and was able to fix the issue and the maids were very diligent in cleaning up the mess.
With the second room, there was also a shower issue but this time I waited an hour before a tech person came to my room, even when I had my tour director call them as well. This tech guy (not the same as the first) removed a big part from the drain and said it was fine. When I turned the shower on, again the same water issue and when I called down to Guest Services, the woman informed me that the tech guy said it could not be fixed, and that several rooms had that issue which is why I said, no one should be placed in those rooms. I said that it was a safety hazard but did not get a response on that and therefore I asked to switch my room because I was there for 5 more nights. She was unsure if there was availability but I insisted and it was found.
The next room did not have a blanket, had a non-functional safe, and an incomplete set of towels. On some days, I thought I smelled smoke in the room and I tried to open the window which I couldn’t do but the next day, I found my window was opened by someone else. Also the bed was not made one day so I had to track down a maid in order to get fresh towels and one of my friends was told that there was a shortage of towels especially hand towels. My maid had to get my towels out of another room.
Please note that the staff was always professional and courteous but I should not have had to contact them so often to fix things, and I hope the hotel will take all necessary steps to improve on this situation because the Grand Aston has a lot of potential. If you decide to stay there, be sure to check the showers before unpacking.

I went to this hotel in March 2023 and the food at the included breakfast was very varied and excellent
The service was great
My visit in November was very different
The food at lunch was more that of a 3 star and on 9 days only morning we had eggs
For lunch: pork chicken pancake not very appetizing…
I had a car so I went to lunch at the National Hotel, the Parque Central Hotel and another restaurant where there were good fried eggs...
Coffee also in the cafeteria not very good
The shower drain was blocked and after 3 complaints during the first 4 days nothing was fixed
They didn't change my room as I had requested.
On the 5th day in the morning I went to the office where I had made a complaint and the girl asked me if everything was resolved and I told her no but after 3 complaints I'm not going to complain again
Housekeeping would pick up the towels which I placed on the floor to prevent water from flooding the room and place them on the hook to dry…,,

I am sharing my experience of staying at the hotel from June 15-20, 2024. Besides minor glitches, i.e., the charges of my credit card taking 10 minutes for 1 transaction and the bar asking me if I wanted to take my drink in a glass out in the street to drink, keep in mind I was a guest of the hotel and only wanted to sit outside of the bar at their table to enjoy my beverage with friends, the stay was good until the check out day.
I was the only guest in my room. After leaving the room number 912, the bellman took my baggage to the lobby, I then went to breakfast in the hotel. I was in the restaurant for 20-30 minutes. When I went to the front desk to check out, I was informed a towel was missing and I had to pay $18 for the hand towel. Keep in mind, the towels were not 5 star towels. Also, they desk had a list of room numbers with the same issue. I said I did not need to take a towel, I travel all over the world extensively and have never been accused of such nonsense. Instead of holding up our bus to take myself and other guests to the airport, I paid it. We were a group of 75 guests of DDT Travel based out of Atlanta, GA, US. When I arrived home and unpacking, I realized I mistakenly left a bikini swimsuit and missing a large watermelon art hand fan. Since housekeeping hurriedly ran to my room, why did they not inform the front desk of my left behind items? They informed of the alleged missing towel! Why were the items not turned in before I left? They knew I was still there! Housekeeping had PLENTY of time to inform the desk.
Even when housekeeping is not allowed in the room, they know rolls of toilet tissue are needed. Towels need to be replaced.
I find the integrity of the staff to be compromised - thievery. Guests allow staff to come into the rooms, even while not in the room, and this is what is occurring? I will give the management an ample opportunity to respond to this review. This situation really upset me. I left a generous tip for housekeeping service and being charged is the thanks I received.

It’s a nice and new hotel, but definitely not to 5 star standard. At best is comparable to 4 star in US, Canada, Europe. The reception staff was nice, but it’s true the internet never worked in the room! I stayed here for 5 nights, it never worked in my room! We have to sit in the lobby to get connected… and if you ask them, they will tell you it doesn’t work in the room. That’s the answer.
Breakfast was great on the first day, then downgraded the following days, only all sorts of salami. Lots of bakery choices if you like bread and donuts. I guess because not so many people eat in…
The pool is beautiful. The hotel is by the water, but it’s not beach.
It’s new hotel so still looks nice, but there’s a bit leaking in the toilet already. Other hotel in Cuba will provide bottle water, but this hotel doesn’t, you have to pay $3 for a small bottle. And the staff doesn’t speak English, very challenging to buy the water. But they are nice people, you just need to be patient to explain to them…
The location is just ok. not that convenient, nothing nearby. It costs USD $20 to get to city Center, and $40
to airport one way.
That being said, if the internet works in the room, I will be willing to give 4 star. Otherwise, very frustrating to stay here if you are not patient as me…

Cute place but...the hallways are hot as F#$%. The room- the AC did not work. Receptionist said look at channel 1 on the TV it explains everything. Couldn't figure it out, went back to the receptionist. She explained you have to put eco mode on, then another mode on, and then select AC. Tried it and nothing. Called the receptionist for maintenance to get a look at it. 3 hours later (1 am) no AC work, no maintenance guy. I went around the hotel looking for the maintenance guy. 2 am I find him. He comes to the room, plays, with a few buttons and says its "ON". I sweated like an animal all night. Now in the dining room they have a lot of unskilled wait staff. Asked for some water and the waitress poured water on my plate (full of food) on the way there and on the way back. She didn't even notice. She asked if I wanted anything else I told her to take away the plate as there was too much water on it. Pool was cool but that was it. I've stayed in $40 hotels that were better

Hello,We hope soo you can well, our team are very happy to say we have elevators and we have accecibility for wheelchairs.
Get instructions from the lobby signage and the password from the front desk. The one they gave me had the last letter cut off which took me a bit to figure out. Wifi is pretty slow and spotty. If you have an unlocked phone and can use an esim, you can purchase internet access phone your phone in advance via the Airalo app.
